A Computational Study Of The Role Of Spatial Receptive Field Structure In Processing Natural And Non-Natural Scenes, Victor J. Barranca, G. Zhu
A Computational Study Of The Role Of Spatial Receptive Field Structure In Processing Natural And Non-Natural Scenes, Victor J. Barranca, G. Zhu
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
The center-surround receptive field structure, ubiquitous in the visual system, is hypothesized to be evolutionarily advantageous in image processing tasks. We address the potential functional benefits and shortcomings of spatial localization and center-surround antagonism in the context of an integrate-and-fire neuronal network model with image-based forcing. Utilizing the sparsity of natural scenes, we derive a compressive-sensing framework for input image reconstruction utilizing evoked neuronal firing rates. We investigate how the accuracy of input encoding depends on the receptive field architecture, and demonstrate that spatial localization in visual stimulus sampling facilitates marked improvements in natural scene processing beyond uniformly-random excitatory connectivity. …

With-In Host Dynamics Of L. Monocytogenes And Thresholds For Distinct Infection Scenarios, Ashrafur Rahman, Daniel Munther, Aamir Fazil, Ben Smith, Jianhong Wu
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
The case fatality and illness rates associated with L. monocytogenes continue to pose a serious public health burden despite the significant efforts and control protocol administered by private and public sectors. Due to the advance in surveillance and improvement in detection methodology, the knowledge of sources, transmission routes, growth potential in food process units and storage, effect of pH and temperature are well understood. However, the with-in host growth and transmission mechanisms of L. monocytogenes, particularly within the human host, remain unclear, largely due to the limited access to scientific experimentation on the human population. In order to provide insight …

Evolution And Nature Of Science Instruction: A First-Person Account Of Changes In Evolution Instruction Throughout A Career, Lawrence C. Scharmann
Evolution And Nature Of Science Instruction: A First-Person Account Of Changes In Evolution Instruction Throughout A Career, Lawrence C. Scharmann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In this article, I provide an analysis of my work (1985–present) with non-major biology students and science teacher candidates in developing strategies for teaching and enhancing learning with respect to evolutionary science. This first-person account describes changes in evolution instruction over the course of a career based on personal experiences, research-informed practices, and a critical collaboration with colleague Mike U. Smith. I assert four insights concerning the influence and efficacy of teaching nature of science (NOS) prior to the introduction of evolution within college courses for science non-majors and science teacher candidates. These insights are: (a) teach explicit NOS principles …
Studies On Lipid Metabolizing Genes In Yeast Aging And Longevity, Thomas Friedbert Hahn
Studies On Lipid Metabolizing Genes In Yeast Aging And Longevity, Thomas Friedbert Hahn
Theses and Dissertations
Aging in eukaryotes is an extremely complex process associated with many different phenotypes. The aging process operates on many different scales or levels within an organism, from the molecular to a whole complex physiology. There are many different aging mechanisms, e.g. in yeast many different processes underlie chronological (measured in hours) lifespan and replicative lifespan (RLS) (measured in generations). To understand what causes aging and what occurs during aging, scientists have collected multiple sets of genome-wide data, such as transcriptomes, from the model organism, the budding yeast *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. These data are especially valuable for the application of novel bioinformatic …

E872 Crop Budgets: Nebraska – 2010, Robert Klein, Roger Wilson, H. Douglas Jose, Paul Burgener, Tina N. Barrett
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Each budget consists of five sections: 1) The heading, 2) List of representative field operations, 3) List of materials and services used, 4) Operations and interest tabulations, and 5) Overhead costs including real estate taxes and opportunity charges. The budgets are presented in a worksheet format with a ''Your Estimate'' column for recording modifications in costs. The heading consists of the crop name, source, amount, and application method of water, operating system description, and yield goal and yield estimate. The list of representative field operations is organized in a table with columns for the names of the operations, Times or …

The Future Of Biodiversity Assessment: Using Environmental Dna And Next-Generation Sequencing To Characterize Biological Communities In The Central Highlands Of Arizona, Courtney Turner-Rathbone
Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott
Historically ecological surveys require significant man hours in the field, utilizing methods which can stress species being observed. In using environmental DNA (eDNA) gathered from air, soil, and water, traditional methods may be supplemented or reduced in order to more efficiently utilize funding and reduce or eliminate stress on surveyed species. Water was collected in replicates using aseptic technique from two different sites, 60 miles apart, along the Verde River. Samples were vacuum filtered within 24 hours through 0.45 μm cellulose nitrate (CN) filters to collect eDNA. DNA extraction from the filters was performed. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was …
