Techniques To Stimulate And Interrogate Cell–Cell Adhesion Mechanics, Ruiguo Yang, Joshua A. Broussard, Kathleen J. Green, Horacio D. Espinosa
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Cell–cell adhesions maintain the mechanical integrity of multicellular tissues and have recently been found to act as mechanotransducers, translating mechanical cues into biochemical signals. Mechanotransduction studies have primarily focused on focal adhesions, sites of cell-substrate attachment. These studies leverage technical advances in devices and systems interfacing with living cells through cell–extracellular matrix adhesions. As reports of aberrant signal transduction originating from mutations in cell–cell adhesion molecules are being increasingly associated with disease states, growing attention is being paid to this intercellular signaling hub. Along with this renewed focus, new requirements arise for the interrogation and stimulation of cell–cell adhesive junctions. …

The Supply Side Determinants Of Territory And Conflict, Jordan Adamson, Erik O. Kimbrough
The Supply Side Determinants Of Territory And Conflict, Jordan Adamson, Erik O. Kimbrough
ESI Working Papers
What determines the geographic extent of territory? We microfound and extend Boulding’s “Loss of Strength Gradient” to predict the extensive and intensive margins of conflict across space. We show how economies of scale in the production of violence and varying costs of projecting violence at a distance combine to affect the geographic distribution of conflict and territory. We test and probe the boundaries of this model in an experiment varying the fixed costs of conflict entry. As predicted, higher fixed costs increase the probability of exclusive territories; median behavior closely tracks equilibrium predictions in all treatments.
Barriers To Academic Success Experienced By Student Veterans, Anthony D. Terry
Barriers To Academic Success Experienced By Student Veterans, Anthony D. Terry
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Thirty to forty percent of student veterans do not complete their postsecondary programs (Cate, 2013). Many student veterans lack the proper assistance when battling stressors that directly affect their experiences during college. The stress and depression associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder also prevent many veterans from succeeding. Veterans often experience culture shock when transitioning from the military to student life and may feel they have lost a part of their identity. This study addresses these challenges and highlights some of the issues returning veterans face when pursuing higher education. The study also examines the way in which student veterans’ experiences …

Cysteine Deleted Tachyplesin Peptide Analogs As Anti-Cancer Agents, Jaylen E. Taylor
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Adenocarcinoma is a common type of non-small cell cancer that represents 80% of all diagnosed lung cancers. Typical treatment methods include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, or some combination of the three. Although radiation therapy and chemotherapy treatments are effective at killing cancer cells, the side effects and symptoms associated with these treatments can cause severe damage to the patient’s body and even encourage some fatal illnesses, such as sepsis. Research has been focused on the development of other methods of treatment that would be less harmful or even non-harmful to patients. Antimicrobial peptides are known for their potential in …

Cognitive Functioning Outomes After Binge Drinking And Cigarette Smoking Among A National Sample Of U.S. Older Adults, Courtni M. Montgomery
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Although the effects of chronic substance use on both improvements and impairments in cognitive functioning have been widely studied, less is known about the interactive effect that two or more substances can have on different domains of cognitive functioning in aging adults. As the number of older adults continues to grow in the U.S., along with concomitant increases in substance use in this age group, it will be crucial to better understand the impact of their substance use over time. Information processing speed will be an imperative component to consider when studying substance use in this group because of the …
The Rhetorical Discourse Surrounding Female Intersex Athletes, Victoria T. Fields
The Rhetorical Discourse Surrounding Female Intersex Athletes, Victoria T. Fields
McNair Scholars Research Journal
For decades, female intersex athletes have been ostracized by professional sport organizations due to their androgynous or masculine physiques. These athletes have experienced backlash from sports fans and competitors due to the assumption that they are men masquerading as women, or that they have gained unfair advantages in competition through the use of testosterone (Schweinbenz & Cronk, 2010). Negative media coverage has led to some of these athletes being required to undergo sex verification tests and/or suspensions by the International Olympic Committee (IOC; Elsas et al., 2000). This study explores the rhetorical discourse surrounding female intersex athletes in professional athletic …
Communication In Divorced Families With Children, Casey L. James
Communication In Divorced Families With Children, Casey L. James
The Hilltop Review
This paper explores the research on communication in divorced families with minor children. The primary focus is on the various styles of communication and how communication affects children. After looking at the conversation and conformity family dyads, the dyads will be used in various areas of this paper to highlight the pros and cons of these family types and which aspect of the dyad has a stronger impact on healthy adjustment to the marital status transition. Communication will be broken down further to explore the impact communication with parents has on child adjustment. In addition, communication between the co-parents and …
Fine Southern Gentlemen: The Three Beaux Of Edna Pontellier, Keli Masten
Fine Southern Gentlemen: The Three Beaux Of Edna Pontellier, Keli Masten
The Hilltop Review
Much of the literary criticism on Kate Chopin’s The Awakening has focused upon the main character, Edna Pontellier, and her journey of self-discovery, but the surrounding cast is rich with personalities as diverse and enlightening as Edna’s own. While most of the characters seem clearly defined as to their values, desires, and how they reconcile any dissonance they might face, and Edna Pontellier might seem like the only person suffering the torment of this discord, each character is actually negotiating a careful playing field replete with rules, regulations, and strict penalties if one is to run afoul. This essay explores …
The Ethical Dilemma Of Blowing The Whistle: Research Misconduct And Its Reporters, David Sottile
The Ethical Dilemma Of Blowing The Whistle: Research Misconduct And Its Reporters, David Sottile
The Hilltop Review
Research misconduct is a widespread issue that affects the credibility of science as a discipline. While a relatively small number of researchers engage directly in research misconduct, there is a larger number of researchers that are aware of research misconduct and do not report it. This permits falsified research to be disseminated throughout the scientific community. It is important to analyze both those engaging in research misconduct as well as those that are aware. The case example of Stephen E. Breuning is used throughout the paper. Stephen E. Breuning is a scientist that engaged in research misconduct that collaborated with …
Gender Nonconformity: The Social Construction Of Gender Transgression, Christine E. Strayer
Gender Nonconformity: The Social Construction Of Gender Transgression, Christine E. Strayer
The Hilltop Review
Using the theoretical lens of postmodernist and queer theoretical perspectives of gender, this paper explores social mechanisms which serve to construct and reify the social stigma associated with gender nonconformity in Western society. The primary research question proposed for examination in this analysis is: How are acts of gender nonconformity, particularly the manipulation of masculinity, socially constructed as acts of transgression or deviance by language and discourse? Emphasis is placed upon the sociological purposes of a socially-constructed gender binary as well as the complex conceptual framework of traditional masculinity as the referent gender category. The concept of manipulated masculinities …

Gogo: An Improved Algorithm To Measure The Semantic Similarity Between Gene Ontology Terms, Chenguang Zhao, Zheng Wang
Gogo: An Improved Algorithm To Measure The Semantic Similarity Between Gene Ontology Terms, Chenguang Zhao, Zheng Wang
Student Publications
Measuring the semantic similarity between Gene Ontology (GO) terms is an essential step in functional bioinformatics research. We implemented a software named GOGO for calculating the semantic similarity between GO terms. GOGO has the advantages of both information-content-based and hybrid methods, such as Resnik’s and Wang’s methods. Moreover, GOGO is relatively fast and does not need to calculate information content (IC) from a large gene annotation corpus but still has the advantage of using IC. This is achieved by considering the number of children nodes in the GO directed acyclic graphs when calculating the semantic contribution of an ancestor node …

Staphylococcus genus comprising both Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) are widely distributed in nature and can infect diversity of hosts. Indeed, staphylococci are the major pathogens causing biofilm associated infections caused by contaminated hospital indwelling devices. These infections are persistent in nature being highly refractory to various stresses including antibiotics. Implementation of efficient diagnostic techniques for the biofilm production would help minimize the disease burden. Thus, early detection of pathogenic strains producing biofilms warrant the utmost importance in diagnostic laboratories especially in resource limited settings.
