Despite the growing number of patients worldwide with metabolism-related chronic diseases, medical biochemistry education is commonly perceived as focusing on recall of facts irrelevant for patient care. The authors suggest that this focus on rote memorization of pathways creates excessive cognitive load that may interfere with learners’ development of an integrated understanding of metabolic regulation and dysregulation. This cognitive load can be minimized by providing appropriate references during learning and assessment. Biochemistry educators collaborated to develop a medically relevant Pathways of Human Metabolism map (MetMap) that is now being used at many medical schools as a nationally standardized resource during …

We report the emissions of glyoxal and methylglyoxal from the open burning of biomass during the NOAA-led 2016 FIREX intensive at the Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, MT. Both compounds were measured using cavity-enhanced spectroscopy, which is both more sensitive and more selective than methods previously used to determine emissions of these two compounds. A total of 75 burns were conducted, using 33 different fuels in 8 different categories, providing a far more comprehensive dataset for emissions than was previously available. Measurements of methylglyoxal using our instrument suffer from spectral interferences from several other species, and the values reported here …

Gulf-Wide Seafloor Surface Benthic Foraminifera Stable Isotopes From Sediment Cores Collected On Multiple Cruises From 2010-06-13 To 2017-07-19, Patrick Schwing, David J. Hollander
C-IMAGE data
This dataset includes baseline stable carbon and oxygen isotope measurements from benthic foraminifera throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Stable isotope measurements were performed on Cibicidoides spp. The dataset contains the sediment core information such as location, date, and depth; and benthic foraminiferal stable carbon and oxygen isotopes. Sediment cores were collected on multiple cruises from 2010-06-13 to 2017-07-19.

Fire refugia – the unburned areas within fire perimeters – are important to the survival of many taxa through fire events and the revegetation of post-fire landscapes. Previous work has shown that species use and benefit from small-scale fire refugia (1 m2 to 1000 m2), but our understanding of where and how fire refugia form is largely limited to the scale of remotely sensed data (i.e., 900 m2 Landsat pixels). To examine the causes and consequences of small fire refugia, we field-mapped all unburned patches ≥1 m2 within a contiguous 25.6 ha forest plot that …

Responsible Use Of Materials For Oer: A Hands-On Workshop For Faculty, Madeline Cohen
Publications and Research
This lightening talk will give an overview of an active-learning workshop at Lehman College for faculty developing OER. The goals of the 90 minute workshop are to provide practical exercises through which faculty learn how to identify, provide attribution for, and reuse materials that are under copyright, open access (public domain) or under Creative Commons licenses. Research Guides and tutorials on copyright and Creative Commons have been provided to faculty, but the content can be difficult for the novice to absorb. In fact, faculty often think of copyright and Creative Commons as more confusing than they are in practice.Therefore, the …

Research Report: Prevalence And Mechanism Of Atrazine Resistance In Waterhemp From Nebraska, Rodrigo Werle, Mithila Jugulam, Greg Kruger, Amaranatha Vennapusa, Felipe Faleco, Bruno Viera, Spencer Samuelson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Waterhemp is a troublesome summer annual broadleaf weed species that has evolved resistance to glyphosate and other herbicide sites of action (SOA) in Nebraska, including to groups 2 (i.e., Classic, Pursuit, FirstRate), 4 (i.e., 2, 4-D), 5(i.e., atrazine) and 27 (e.g., Callisto, Laudis). The overall objectives of this study were to
- Evaluate the eficay of PRE applied atrazine, metribuzin and sulfentrazone to control Nebraska waterhemp populations;
- Evaluate the efficacy of POST applied atrazine to control Nebraska waterhemp populations; and
- Determine the mechanism of atrazine resistance in Nebraska waterhemp populations.

The Mitochondrial Genome Of The Endemic Brazilian Paradoxial Frog Pseudis Tocantins (Hylidae), Kaleb Pretto Gatto, Jeramiah J. Smith, Luciana Bolsoni Lourenço
Biology Faculty Publications
In this work, we present for the first time the mitochondrial genome of a paradoxical frog (Pseudis tocantins). This genome is 15.56 kb, excluding the control region, and is similar in gene content to other hylid mitogenomes. Maximum likelihood analysis, using the mitogenomes of several anurans, indicated P. tocantins as closely related to other hylid species.
