After much debate and synthesis, social learning scholarship is entering an era of empirical research. Given the range across individual-, network-, and systems-level perspectives and scales, clear documentation of social learning processes is critical for making claims about social learning outcomes and their impacts. Past studies have relied on participant recall and concept maps to document perceptions of social learning process and outcome. Using an individual-centric perspective and importing ideas from communication and psychology on question-answer learning through conversational agents, we contribute an expanded conceptual framework and qualitative analytical strategy for assessing stakeholder dialogue for evidence of social learning. We …

A growing literature seeks to explore the factors shaping adaptation to climate change. In collectively managed common pool resource systems, there is often a tension between behavior that benefits the individual and actions that benefit a larger group. Resource users in sustainable systems must therefore work together to ensure outcomes that are beneficial to the group as a whole. However, in the face of changing social, political, and environmental conditions, community norms may change, leading to the emerging of new behavioral patterns. Understanding when and why people decide to act in ways that benefit the group as a whole can …

Investigating The Causes And Cures For Unclear Scholarly Writing, Marlene Ingrid Mahony
Investigating The Causes And Cures For Unclear Scholarly Writing, Marlene Ingrid Mahony
Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation investigated possible causes and cures for unclear scholarly writing. For this study, a stipulative definition of unclear scholarly writing, or “academese,” is that the language tends to be vague and verbose. The problem, according to the included literature, is that people who use or accept vague language have less academic, social, professional, and civic power. Academese, some say, can detach readers and that can accordingly diminish collective exchange. Because higher education is meant to share knowledge, promote agency, and prepare students to communicate powerfully within and beyond the university, this study researched the causes and cures of …

The plant parasite Hydnora arabica (Aristolochiaceae) is described from the Arabian Peninsula. This species was previously identified as Hydnora africana in Oman. It can be separated from other Hydnora taxa primarily by its terete rhizome, red to orange inner perianth tube color, and tepal lobe margins entirely covered with dense strigose setae. In Oman, Hydnora arabica is known to parasitize two leguminous trees: Acacia tortilis and the introduced Pithocellobium dulce, but may parasitize additional Fabaceae. At least eleven synonyms or subspecific varieties of H. abyssinica are described in the literature, all from east or southern Africa. These synonyms are …

Varroa destructor mites (varroa) are ectoparasites of Apis mellifera honey bees, and the damage they inflict on hosts is likely a causative factor of recent poor honey bee colony performance. Research has produced an arsenal of control agents against varroa mites, which have become resistant to many chemical means of their control, and other means have uncertain efficacy. Novel means of control will result from a thorough understanding of varroa physiology and behavior. However, robust knowledge of varroa biology is lacking; mites have very low survivability and reproduction away from their natural environment and host, and few tested protocols of …

Coral bleaching is the detrimental expulsion of algal symbionts from their cnidarian hosts, and predominantly occurs when corals are exposed to thermal stress. The incidence and severity of bleaching is often spatially heterogeneous within reef-scales (km), and is therefore not predictable using conventional remote sensing products. Here, we systematically assess the relationship between in situ measurements of 20 environmental variables, along with seven remotely sensed SST thermal stress metrics, and 81 observed bleaching events at coral reef locations spanning five major reef regions globally. We find that high-frequency temperature variability (i.e., daily temperature range) was the most influential factor in …

Incidental capture of air‑breathing species in fishing gear is a major source of mortality for many threatened populations. Even when individuals are discarded alive, they may not survive due to direct injury, or due to more cryptic internal physiological injury such as decompression sickness. Post‑release mortality, however, can be difficult to determine. In this pilot study, we deployed survivorship pop‑up archival tags (sPAT) (n = 3) for an air‑breathing species, the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), one of the first studies to do so. We found that at least two of the three turtles survived after being …

Species distribution models (SDMs) have become key tools for describing and predicting species habitats. In the marine domain, environmental data used in modeling species distributions are often remotely sensed, and as such have limited capacity for interpreting the vertical structure of the water column, or are sampled in situ, offering minimal spatial and temporal coverage. Advances in ocean models have improved our capacity to explore subsurface ocean features, yet there has been limited integration of such features in SDMs. Using output from a data-assimilative configuration of the Regional Ocean Modeling System, we examine the effect of including dynamic subsurface …

Understanding the diet of deep-diving predators can provide essential insight to the trophic structure of the mesopelagic ecosystem. Comprehensive population-level diet estimates are exceptionally difficult to obtain for elusive marine predators due to the logistical challenges involved in observing their feeding behavior and collecting samples for traditional stomach content or fecal analyses. We used quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) to estimate the diet composition of a wide-ranging mesopelagic predator, the northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris), across five years. To implement QFASA, we first compiled a library of prey fatty acid (FA) profiles from the mesopelagic eastern North Pacific. Given …

Variation Of Native American Ceramics In The Big Bend Region Of The Lower Ocmulgee River Valley, Georgia, Ad 1540 To Ad 1715, Rachel Paige Hensler
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
Studies of European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere have shifted focus from areas of direct European/Native American contact, to investigate Native American groups outside of direct European contact. During Spanish colonization of the Southeastern United States (AD 1520 to AD 1715), the Big Bend region of the Ocmulgee River Valley, in Georgia, located about 160 kilometers from Spanish occupied coast, was inhabited by a Native American polity from the Late Prehistoric into the Mission period. This location is ideal for studying indirect contact.
Changes in ceramic production can be used to identify changes in Native American interaction through time. Attributes …

“We’Re Being Left To Blight”: Green Urban Development And Racialized Space In Kansas City, Chhaya Kolavalli
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
In this dissertation, I explore ‘green’ urban development and urban agriculture projects from the perspective of residents of an African American majority neighborhood in Kansas City—who reside in an area referred to as a ‘blighted food desert’ by local policy makers. In Kansas City, extensive city government support exists for urban agricultural projects, which are touted not just as a solution to poverty associated issues such food insecurity and obesity, but also as a remedy for ‘blight,’ violence and crime, and vacant urban land. Specific narratives of Kansas City’s past are used to prop up and legitimate these future visions …

Identifying the factors that influence spatial genetic structure among populations can provide insights into the evolution of invasive plants. In this study, we used the common reed (Phragmites australis), a grass native in Europe and invading North America, to examine the relative importance of geographic, environmental (represented by climate here), and human effects on population genetic structure and its changes during invasion. We collected samples of P. australis from both the invaded North American and native European ranges and used molecular markers to investigate the population genetic structure within and between ranges. We used path analysis to identify …
Complete Measurement System For Measuring High Voltage And Electrical Field Using Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Nikola Stan
Complete Measurement System For Measuring High Voltage And Electrical Field Using Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Nikola Stan
Theses and Dissertations
A slab-coupled optical fiber sensor (SCOS) falls into a narrow class of all-dielectric optical fiber electric field sensors, which makes it a perfect candidate for measurements of high electric fields in environments where presence of conductors is highly perturbing to the system under test. Its nonlinear response to high fields requires a new nonlinear calibration technique. A nonlinear calibration method is explained and demonstrated to successfully measure high electric fields, as well as high voltages with dynamic range up to 50 dB. Furthermore, a SCOS can be fitted into narrow spaces and make highly localized measurements due to its small …

Identification Of Genes And Metabolites Involved In Durian Durio Zibethinus Fruit Ripening, Pinnapat Pinsorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Durian (Durio zibethinus M.), a major economic fruit, actively produces infamous sulfur-containing compounds during ripening. However, sulfur metabolism which is important in this fruit is rarely investigated. In this study, the integration of metabolomics using CE-TOF/MS and transcriptomics using de novo RNA-seq assembly was performed to reveal metabolic changes involved in sulfur metabolism and chemical composition related to fruit quality. During ripening, the expression level of genes involved in sulfur metabolism is concurred with the reduced sulfate ion content in placenta and the up-accumulation of sulfur metabolism-related metabolites in pulps. It is noteworthy that durian pulps highly accumulate γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-EC) …

Reduced Graphene Oxide-Modified Screen-Printed Carbon Electrode For Determination Of Homocysteine Using Catechol, Suchapa Naranaruemol
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Homocysteine (Hcy), also known as 2-amino-4-mercaptobutyric acid, is a biomarker that is directly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). In this work, catechol (CA), which is redox active, had been used as an electron transfer mediator to facilitate the oxidation of Hcy. Typically, CA was first electrochemically immobilized onto the surface of screen-printed carbon electrode; however, the obtained CA-functionalized electrode did not show the electrocatalytic activity towards the detection of Hcy. Therefore, the deter– mination of Hcy was investigated in the solution containing CA using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at the reduced graphene oxide-modified screen-printed carbon electrode …

Image Super-Resolution Technique Using Deep Inception Based Residual Networks, Wazir Muhammad
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Recently, deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have achieved exceptional performance over the past few years, in the area of image processing and computer vision task, especially on single image super-resolution (SISR). It is an immensely challenging task and has multiple practical applications, such as medical image processing, satellite imaging, facial image enhancement, and compressed image improvement. However, the majority of the existing image super-resolution CNN-based methods have been developed by stacking an innumerable number of layers and blindly increasing the size of the network architecture. Conversely, this leads to an increase in the model sizes and higher computational complexities. Furthermore, …

Synthesis And Biological Activities Of Halogenated Chalcone-Based Pyra, Dinh Phuoc Nguyen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Twenty new 1,3,5-trisubstituted pyrazoline derivatives have been synthesized from chalcones and acylhydrazides in two steps. In the first step, chalcones were prepared by treatment of various acetophenones with different substituted benzaldehydes by Claisen-Schmidt condensation. In the second step, pyrazoline derivatives were synthesized by conducting the reaction of chalcones with acylhydrazides in acetonitrile at 67 °C in the presence of triazabicyclodecene as a catalyst. The synthesized compounds were identified by 1H, 13C NMR and HRMS spectral data and were evaluated for their antibacterial, anticancer and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. In antibacterial and tyrosinase inhibitory activities, most of pyrazoline derivatives showed inactive properties. …

Although counts of tweets citing academic papers are used as an informal indicator of interest, little is known about who tweets academic papers and who uses Twitter to find scholarly information. Without knowing this, it is difficult to draw useful conclusions from a publication being frequently tweeted. This study surveyed 1,912 users that have tweeted journal articles to ask about their scholarly-related Twitter uses. Almost half of the respondents (45%) did not work in academia, despite the sample probably being biased towards academics. A paper-based analytical devices (PADs) provides a great benefit in medical diagnostics, especially in the developing world. The first part of this dissertation describes the effect of sample viscosity on PADs for the measurement of pH and nitrite concentration in human saliva. Preliminary study found that viscosity had a significant effect on the calibration curve of nitrite and a consistent curve could be generated after added washing buffer. Nitrite measurement in artificial saliva with viscosity 1.87-5.10 mPa-s was tested on the proposed device and also showed a good correlation with the standard spectrophotometry method (p=0.8484, paired sample t-test, n=20). Moreover, …

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is a major type of hair loss found in both males and females, caused by the overproduction of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is formed from testosterone (T) by the enzymes 5 alpha-reductase (5α-R). In this study, the main focus was on cytokine factors evaluation of Avicennia marina (AM extract) in primary dermal papilla cells (DPCs) from AGA patients and the efficacy in vivo. The present study has revealed that AM extract and its active constituent, avicequinone C (AC) significantly inhibit the enzyme activity of 5α-R on cell-based assay combined with a non-radioactive thin layer chromatography (TLC) using …

Cisplatin, platinum-based chemotherapy, is one of the standard chemotherapies for the treatment of lung cancer. However, its usefulness is limited due to the adverse effects and susceptibility to chemoresistance which lead to therapeutic failure. Nowadays, natural chemosensitizers, which can enhance the efficacy and decrease the effective dose of chemo-drugs, have been found to be interested in novel therapeutic. Recently, the anticancer activity of peptides extracted from Lentinus squarrosulus Mont. in human lung cancer cells has been reported. The novel potential of L. squarrosulus peptides as a chemotherapeutic adjuvant to increase cisplatin-induced apoptosis was uncovered in this study. Crude peptides extracted …
