Choreographing Conflict: Inspiring Change Through Visual And Physical Representations, Rachel Nayer Jan 2018

Choreographing Conflict: Inspiring Change Through Visual And Physical Representations, Rachel Nayer

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis examines how art can support and stimulate personal and social change. It addresses the natural and ever-present existence of conflict and analyzes how using the body as a tool for communication can viscerally represent themes of disagreement and resolution. The work of Israeli choreographers Yasmeen Godder and Hillel Kogan are analyzed in a case study to explore different methods of choreographing conflict. Both works successfully, yet contrastingly, demonstrate how the body adds power and emotion to an idea. Parallel to the research component of this thesis is the original choreographed work, Ecotones. The creative method behind Ecotones …

This review focuses on the role of Aβ in AD pathogenesis in Down syndrome and current approaches for imaging Aβ in vivo. We will describe how Aβ deposits with age, the posttranslational modifications that can occur, and detection in biofluids. Three unique case studies describing partial trisomy 21 cases without APP triplication, and the occurrences of low level mosaic trisomy 21 in an early onset AD patient are presented. Brain imaging for Aβ includes those by positron emission tomography and ligands (Pittsburgh Compound B, Florbetapir, and FDDNP) that bind Aβ have been published and are summarized here. In combination, we …

Constituting Bodies Into The Future: Toward A Relational Theory Of Intergenerational Justice, Jessica Eisen, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Dayna Scott Jan 2018

Constituting Bodies Into The Future: Toward A Relational Theory Of Intergenerational Justice, Jessica Eisen, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Dayna Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

Questions of justice now unfurl on spatial and temporal scales at once global and microscopic, immediate and spanning through the ages. Legal and political concepts of causation and responsibility are complicated and reconfigured by our growing awareness of the intergenerational consequences of contemporary choices. In this context, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development ("Standing Committee") recently recommended that the Government of Canada create "an advocate for Canada's future generations."' The Standing Committee's report expressly cites growing transnational and international attention to the demands of "intergenerational equity''. noting that various jurisdictions have experimented with institutional committees …

Cripping The Ethics Of Disability Arts Research, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Andrea Lamarre, Carla Rice Jan 2018

Cripping The Ethics Of Disability Arts Research, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Andrea Lamarre, Carla Rice

Articles & Book Chapters

The use of multimedia story making and drama based narrative in disability health research raises conventional ethical issues of informed consent, anonymity and confidentiality. In this chapter we explore unique ethical issues that arise when working with non-normatively embodied research participants in a highly collaborative way, using arts based mediums that transgress boundaries of anonymity and privacy, and call for difference-tailored processes of consent. People with disabilities have long been the object of medical and health research and the subjects of biomedical ethical transgressions, giving rise to the need for stricter human subject protocols about consent, confidentiality and anonymity. However, …

Retrieving And Recommending For The Classroom: Stakeholders, Objectives, Resources, And Users, Michael D. Ekstrand, Ion Madrazo Azpiazu, Katherine Landau Wright, Maria Soledad Pera

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we consider the promise and challenges of deploying recommendation and information retrieval technology to help teachers locate resources for use in classroom instruction. The classroom setting is a complex environment presenting a number of challenges for recommendation, due to its inherent multi-stakeholder nature, the multiple objectives that quality educational resources and experiences must simultaneously satisfy, and potential disconnect between the direct user of the system and the end users of the resources it provides. In this paper, we outline these challenges, highlight opportunities for new research, and describe our work in progress in this area including insights …

Evaluation Of The Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Marine Rivulariaceae., Jose Alberto Martinez Yerena Jan 2018

Evaluation Of The Phylogenetic Relationships Of The Marine Rivulariaceae., Jose Alberto Martinez Yerena

Masters Theses

Historically, the Rivulariaceae family has grouped all heteropolar, tapered and heterocitous Cyanobacteria, however recent description of multiple cyanobacterial populations with this morphotype using 16S rRNA phylogenies have reported that the populations with this morphotype are polyphyletic, and many new and old tapered and heteropolar genera (Cyanomargarita, Gloeothrichia, Rohoaltiella, etc.) have been classified and reclassified to different families than the Rivulariaceae. This is also the case of the main genera of the family (Rivularia and Calothrix), which have been repeatedly reported as polyphyletic, and whose separation to different families has been called for. In this project I carried out the evaluation …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

We report herein the synthesis, characterization, and cytotoxicity evaluations of some newer oxadiazole and triazole analogues (5a-j). The cytotoxicity of all the title compounds were evaluated as per the National Cancer Institute protocol in a one-dose assay (10 $\mu $M) on nine different panels of 59 cancer cell lines. 2-$\{$5-[(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)methyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl$\}$phenol (5e) showed the maximum cytotoxicity among the series of ten compounds. The cytotoxicity of 5e was comparable to that of the standard anticancer drug, 5-fluorouracil, and better than that of imatinib. The structure activity relationship was also discussed.

Using Genograms To Explore Transgenerational Trauma And Racism In African American Couples, Hollie F. Campbell Jan 2018

Using Genograms To Explore Transgenerational Trauma And Racism In African American Couples, Hollie F. Campbell

All Capstone Projects

Despite a significant amount of literature on genograms in the ERIC, PsycINFO, and SocINDEX with full-text databases, only a handful of articles and book chapters address using genograms with African Americans. Of the articles that were found on the clinical application of the genogram as a counseling technique with African American couples, three provided a specific set of interview questions for the construction of a genogram, but did not explore the effects of transgenerational trauma and racism on these couples. Using a modified Delphi technique, the researcher solicited input from a panel of experts who developed and then assessed a …

The Underprepared And Underrepresented: Perceptions And Experiences Of Self-Efficacy On College Persistence Among Low-Income African American First-Generation College Students, Christine Marie Brown Jan 2018

The Underprepared And Underrepresented: Perceptions And Experiences Of Self-Efficacy On College Persistence Among Low-Income African American First-Generation College Students, Christine Marie Brown

All Capstone Projects

Approximately one-third of college students enrolled in colleges across the United States are first-generation students or those whose parents have not attained a post secondary degree. First-generation students are more likely to be students who are racially/ethnically diverse, low-income, and nearly four times more likely to leave college without a degree. College persistence refers to the students' desire and involved behaviors to maintain enrollment until degree attainment. A phenomenological approach was used to conduct face-to-face, in-depth semi-structured interviews to describe the essence of the lived experiences of low-income African American first-generation college students who persisted in four-year undergraduate programs. Results …

Purpose—Increased vascularity is a hallmark of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Microvessel density (MVD) is one measurement of tumor angiogenesis; however, its utility as a biomarker of outcome is unknown. ECOG-ACRIN 2805 (E2805) enrolled 1,943 resected high-risk RCC patients randomized to adjuvant sunitinib, sorafenib, or placebo. We aimed to determine the prognostic and predictive role of MVD in RCC.

Experimental Design—We obtained pretreatment primary RCC nephrectomy tissues from 822 patients on E2805 and constructed tissue microarrays. Using quantitative immunofluorescence, we measured tumor MVD as the area of CD34-expressing cells. We determined the association with disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival …

Optogenetic Examination Of Salt Taste In Mice, Martin Raymond Jan 2018

Optogenetic Examination Of Salt Taste In Mice, Martin Raymond

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis describes a series of experiments designed to evaluate the hypothesis that Type I taste receptor cells play a critical role in the detection and transduction of sodium taste via of epithelial sodium channels (ENaCs). Experiment 1 validated the function of a simple and affordable behavioral apparatus (hardware and software) for testing taste preference and taste aversion in mice. Experiment 2 demonstrated a pharmacological method for rapid induction of salt appetite in mice. Experiment 3 showed that optogenetic stimulation of Type I taste receptor cells (TRCs) in transgenic mice could drive consumption of tap water under conditions of salt …

Opioid Use And Abuse In The United States, James Pellerin Jan 2018

Opioid Use And Abuse In The United States, James Pellerin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Opioids have quadrupled the number of unintentional drug overdose deaths since 1999 and are now among the leading causes of death in the United States. Though some reform has recently occurred, the United States continues to operate largely under a punitive criminal justice model despite unsuccessful legislative schemes and voluminous research stemming from a previous war on drugs. This thesis serves to explore the history and extent of opioids in the United States and to analyze salient catalysts responsible for creating an epidemic of abuse. While private and governmental coalitions have formed to develop successful interventions and treatments, they are …

Neural Correlates Of Nonverbal Social Communication In High-Risk Infants, Casey E. Swick Jan 2018

Neural Correlates Of Nonverbal Social Communication In High-Risk Infants, Casey E. Swick

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this study was to replicate and extend a study by Grossmann and colleagues (2008), examining infant neural responses to gaze in 5-month-olds, to older and high-risk infants. Participants were 9-month-old infants (5 preterm, [3 female]; 12 full term [7 female]) who underwent fNIRS while viewing gaze paradigms. Findings revealed that hemisphere predicted peak oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) across groups and conditions, with higher activation in the left hemisphere across groups. Interaction of group by condition predicted peak HbO2 value, with an increase in activation in the high-risk group during the averted condition. Participants as random …

The History Of Music Theory And The Undergraduate Curriculum, Robert W. Wason Jan 2018

The History Of Music Theory And The Undergraduate Curriculum, Robert W. Wason

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Since the 1950s we have made tremendous progress in our knowledge of the history of music theory; yet, apparently very little has filtered down to undergraduate textbooks. The present paper shows that other fields—particularly philosophy and mathematics, whose histories are intertwined with ours—make much more use of their own history in undergraduate education. The paper then provides a view of a historically and theoretically based curriculum that Matthew Brown and R. Wason taught at the Eastman School in 1999-2000. It finishes with a call for a “liberal book” on music theory for undergraduates, as one writer on science education has …

Ritual Slaughter, Federal Preemption, And Protection For Poultry: What Legislative History Tells Us About Usda Enforcement Of The Humane Slaughter Act, Bruce Friedrich Jan 2018

Ritual Slaughter, Federal Preemption, And Protection For Poultry: What Legislative History Tells Us About Usda Enforcement Of The Humane Slaughter Act, Bruce Friedrich

Animal Law Review

The one federal law that protects animals raised for food (farm animals) is the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA), which, as its name implies, covers only the final moments of animals’ lives. Beyond overall lax enforcement, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has made three interpretive decisions, one with support from the Supreme Court, that have further harmed farm animals: First, USDA exempts the ritual slaughter process from oversight. Second, USDA has thus far refused to protect poultry, who represent more than 98% of slaughtered land animals. And third, USDA has argued, and the Supreme Court agreed, that …

Looking Behind The Curtain: Achieving Disclosure Of Medical And Scientific Information For Cetaceans In Captivity Through Voluntary Compliance, Heather D. Rally, Donald C. Baur, Matthew Mcfeeley

Animal Law Review

In recent years, increasing concern has emerged within the general public and scientific communities over the detrimental effects of captive maintenance on the health and welfare of cetaceans. There is widespread agreement that the medical records of cetaceans held in captivity are a source of important information that can shed light on the animal health impacts of certain captive conditions, as well as on diseases and environmental threats to cetaceans in the wild. Despite the value of such records to advancing animal husbandry, animal welfare, and wildlife conservation, the medical and behavioral records of cetaceans held in captivity are rou- …

Justice For All?: The Shortcomings And Potentials Of The Capabilities Approach For Protecting Animals, Jennifer Davidson Jan 2018

Justice For All?: The Shortcomings And Potentials Of The Capabilities Approach For Protecting Animals, Jennifer Davidson

Animal Law Review

In her book, Frontiers of Justice, Martha Nussbaum sets out to build upon, and re-envision, John Rawls’ theory of justice. Her goal is to establish a conception of justice that extends to three classes that are not adequately captured in Rawls’ work: people with disabilities, people living in different countries, and nonhuman animals. This Note takes on the last of those three extensions, nonhuman animals. Part I presents a brief overview of the major scholarly approaches to conceptualizing animal rights. Part II lays out the capabilities approach in detail, focusing particularly on its application to nonhuman animals. Part III analyzes …

Evaluation Of The Influence Of Wording Changes And Course Type On Motivation Instrument Functioning In Chemistry, Regis Komperda, Kathryn N. Hosbein, Jack Barbera Jan 2018

Evaluation Of The Influence Of Wording Changes And Course Type On Motivation Instrument Functioning In Chemistry, Regis Komperda, Kathryn N. Hosbein, Jack Barbera

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Increased understanding of the importance of the affective domain in chemistry education research has led to the development and adaptation of instruments to measure chemistry-specific affective traits, including motivation. Many of these instruments are adapted from other fields by using the word ‘chemistry’ in place of other disciplines or more general ‘science’ wording. Psychometric evidence is then provided for the functioning of the new adapted instrument. When an instrument is adapted from general language to specific (e.g. replacing ‘science’ with ‘chemistry’), an opportunity exists to compare the functioning of the original instrument in the same context as the adapted instrument. …

Patterns Of Urban Hummingbird Nest Distribution On The Lmu Campus, Amy Weber Jan 2018

Patterns Of Urban Hummingbird Nest Distribution On The Lmu Campus, Amy Weber

Center for Urban Resilience Research Posters

Urban environments provide numerous benefits to hummingbirds including feeders, planted flowers, and nesting sites.

The thermal environment, among other factors, may be important to hummingbird’s choice of nesting microhabitats (Calder 1974).

Allen’s and Anna’s Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin sedentarius) breeds during the winter months in Los Angeles (Clarke 2017).

Between 2012 and 2016, five active hummingbird nests were discovered and monitored on the LMU campus.

In 2017, 15 active nests were monitored on the LMU campus. The locations of these 15 active nests and 45 older nests seemed to exhibit a clustered pattern, and individual nests often were in close proximity …
