Social Determinants Of Health And Blood Pressure Control In United States Immigrants, April Zanetta Dawson
Social Determinants Of Health And Blood Pressure Control In United States Immigrants, April Zanetta Dawson
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation developed a new theory-based conceptual model to understand the impact of immigrant-specific social determinants of health (SDoH) on health services utilization and outcomes in immigrants in the context of antecedents, predisposing, enabling, and need factors. One hundred eighty-one immigrants were recruited from the Greater Milwaukee Area of Wisconsin. Validated instruments were used to capture antecedents (region of origin, race/ethnicity, life-course socioeconomic status), predisposing (demographics, subjective social status, homelessness history, immigration stress, demand of immigration), enabling (healthcare access, perceived discrimination, perceived stress, health literacy, English proficiency, bicultural self-efficacy, acculturation), and need (disability, comorbidities, chronic pain) factors. Blood pressure was …

Gm604 Regulates Developmental Neurogenesis Pathways And The Expression Of Genes Associated With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, William R. Swindell, Krzysztof Bojanowski, Mark S. Kindy, Raymond M. W. Chau, Dorothy Ko
Pharmacy Faculty Publications
Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is currently an incurable disease without highly effective pharmacological treatments. The peptide drug GM604 (GM6 or Alirinetide) was developed as a candidate ALS therapy, which has demonstrated safety and good drug-like properties with a favorable pharmacokinetic profile. GM6 is hypothesized to bolster neuron survival through the multi-target regulation of developmental pathways, but mechanisms of action are not fully understood.
Methods: This study used RNA-seq to evaluate transcriptome responses in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells following GM6 treatment (6, 24 and 48 h).
Results: We identified 2867 protein-coding genes with expression significantly altered by GM6 (FDR < 0.10). Early (6 h) responses included up-regulation of Notch and hedgehog signaling components, with increased expression of developmental genes mediating neurogenesis and axon growth. Prolonged GM6 treatment (24 and 48 h) altered the expression of genes contributing to cell adhesion and the extracellular matrix. GM6 further down-regulated the expression of genes associated with mitochondria, inflammatory responses, mRNA processing and chromatin organization. GM6-increased genes were located near GC-rich motifs interacting with C2H2 zinc finger transcription factors, whereas GM6-decreased genes were located near AT-rich motifs associated with helix-turn-helix homeodomain factors. Such motifs interacted with a diverse network of transcription factors encoded by GM6-regulated genes (STAT3, …

Investigating Chronic Pain As An In-Group Using The Prisoner’S Dilemma, Tracy W. Brown, Cristian M. Botello, Amber L. Harris Bozer
Modern Psychological Studies
Kinship is a strong predictor of altruism. However, chronic pain is a homeostatic threat to survival that creates a social in-group which we predicted would result in increased altruism over and above kinship, because it is driven by shared empathy. Participants included 139 individuals that were divided into a chronic pain or control group. Participants completed six Prisoner’s Dilemma scenarios with a sibling or chronic pain accomplice. Pain altruism and sibling altruism scores were calculated based on decisions to cooperate with or defect on an accomplice. A mixed ANOVA revealed that there were no significant differences between groups. The marginal …
Non-Response To Sad Mood Induction: Implications For Emotion Research, Johnathan Rottenberg, Maria Kovacs, Ilya Yaroslavsky
Non-Response To Sad Mood Induction: Implications For Emotion Research, Johnathan Rottenberg, Maria Kovacs, Ilya Yaroslavsky
Psychology Faculty Publications
Experimental induction of sad mood states is a mainstay of laboratory research on affect and cognition, mood regulation, and mood disorders. Typically, the success of such mood manipulations is reported as a statistically significant pre- to post-induction change in the self-rated intensity of the target affect. The present commentary was motivated by an unexpected finding in one of our studies concerning the response rate to a well-validated sad mood induction. Using the customary statistical approach, we found a significant mean increase in self-rated sadness intensity with a moderate effect size, verifying the “success” of the mood induction. However, that “success” …

Annealing Effect Of Gold Thin Films On The Light Output Performances Of Organic Light Emitting Diodes, Seli̇n Piravadili Mucur, Emi̇ne Teki̇n
Turkish Journal of Physics
Gold thin films (GTFs) are transferred onto a nanostructured surface and their effects on the characteristics of organic light emitting diodes (OLED) are investigated. GTF deposition is realized by the physical vapor deposition technique under high vacuum. Globose gold nanostructures are successfully generated by annealing GTFs at different temperatures. Atomic force microscopy reveals morphological changes affected by film thicknesses and annealing temperatures. In the tailored device architecture, GTFs, [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrenesulfonate) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene are used as a hole injection layer, a hole transport layer, and an emissive layer, respectively. The performances of the fabricated OLEDs are enhanced in the presence …

Using Differing Levels Of Physical Activity As A Context Cue For Memory, Jami Swan
Using Differing Levels Of Physical Activity As A Context Cue For Memory, Jami Swan
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The current study aimed to investigate the use of physical activity as a context cue for object location memory. The study included 49 undergraduate students who were asked to encode and recall a grid of 14 objects under three different physical activity conditions: rest, rolling a ping-pong ball, and pedaling on an exercise bike. It was expected that participants engaging in matching physical activity contexts at encoding and recall would have significantly higher rates of recall for object locations when compared to participants in the non-matching physical activity contexts. Results did not support my hypothesis as there was no evidence …
Synthesis And Kinetic Activity Analysis Of Substituted Pyrazole, Pyrazoline, And Pyrazolidine Alcohol Dehydrogenase Inhibitors, Meagan E. Hackey
Synthesis And Kinetic Activity Analysis Of Substituted Pyrazole, Pyrazoline, And Pyrazolidine Alcohol Dehydrogenase Inhibitors, Meagan E. Hackey
Chemistry Theses
Alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitors may be employed for the treatment of parasitic infection in humans. A series of substituted pyrazoline derivatives were synthesized to elucidate the pharmacophore for the inhibition of ADH. Targeted structure modification was used to alter the electronic and steric interactions associated with the enzyme active site. This study identified several effective N-aryl-carboxamide derivatives with horse liver ADH inhibition, comparable to that of 4-methylpyrazole, a known ADH inhibitor. The identification of pharmacophoric regions will allow for the methodological modification of these compounds to improve enzyme affinity and targeted inhibition. Future research may include additional solubility, toxicity and …
Accountable Care Organization Success Strategies: The Importance Of System Changes, Shelly Pierce
Accountable Care Organization Success Strategies: The Importance Of System Changes, Shelly Pierce
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Accountable care organizations (ACOs) are a new health care reform initiative that has been highlighted as one of the most important organizational structures that could lead to quality improvements and cost savings in the United States through shared savings. The inability of health care managers to successfully implement ACOs could result in financial losses, reduced patient access to health care, and poor patient outcomes. Grounded by von Bertanlaffy's general systems theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the system change strategies health care managers used to implement an ACO to meet ACO quality and cost standards. …

The last two decades has seen a fundamental shift in society with the growth in technology and the growth of social media. This shift has been embraced in the classroom as a tool to enhance the learning experience of the student. Students have experienced a fundamental shift in interaction with themselves and the world they inhabit with the exponential growth in technology and social media both inside and outside the classroom. The result is the multitasking student, who must constantly switch between a growing number of interactions. Attention spans have a finite limit, and eventually students experience an over-consumption of …

Survival, Movements, And Resource Selection Of Female White-Tailed Deer In Missouri, Chloe A. Wright
Survival, Movements, And Resource Selection Of Female White-Tailed Deer In Missouri, Chloe A. Wright
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Missouri are a socially and economically important game species generating annual revenue in excess of $1 billion. The last comprehensive deer study in Missouri was conducted in the 1980s – 1990s when deer populations were rapidly expanding. Since this time there has been a reduction in deer population size, declining growth rates, changes in harvest strategies, and the emergence and spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD). These changes have rendered prior survival estimates outdated, and the presence of CWD requires a deeper understanding of movement patterns and space use. We were interested in …

Determination Of Lipid Bilayer Affinities For Small Molecules Using Capillary Electrophoresis And Copolymer – Stabilized Lipid Bilayer Nanodiscs, William Michael Penny
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Electrokinetic chromatography is a variation of capillary electrophoresis that allows for the separation of nonionic analytes by selective interaction with an ionic pseudostationary phase dissolved in the background electrolyte. The utility of electrokinetic chromatography to characterize pseudostationary phases and pseudostationary phase–solute interactions has been recognized since its introduction. The objective of this dissertation was to use electrokinetic chromatography and copolymer stabilized lipid bilayer nanodiscs as a pseudostationary phase to characterize small molecule-lipid bilayer interactions.
Styrene-maleic acid copolymers were used to stabilize cylindrical sections of lipid bilayer in solution, forming nanodiscs. The nanodiscs are formed based on strong hydrophobic interactions between …

What About Bell? Overcoming The Presumption In Favor Of Requiring Finality In The Cwa’S Direct-Review Provision, Roberto Borgert
What About Bell? Overcoming The Presumption In Favor Of Requiring Finality In The Cwa’S Direct-Review Provision, Roberto Borgert
University of Chicago Law Review
The default rule for judicial review of agency action is that review is available for final agency action. Courts typically enforce this requirement by citing an explicit finality requirement in the text of a review statute. When a review statute does not mention finality, courts apply a presumption in favor of requiring final agency action. The Clean Water Act’s (CWA) direct-appellate-review provision does not contain an explicit finality requirement. This Comment analyzes whether the CWA’s directreview provision can overcome the presumption in favor of requiring final agency action. The Comment proposes a test to determine whether a statute can overcome …
