Clinical Relevance Of Μ-Opioid Receptor A118g Polymorphism In Demographically Variant Populations, Iryna Pokotylyuk, Srishti Kulshrestha, Zvi G. Loewy, Priyank Kumar
Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research
Use of opioids is essential in providing a broad and effective analgesic effect. Opioid dosing has to be monitored and controlled in order to manage pain and the corresponding side effects due to opioid treatment. A very common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with the µ opioid receptor is A118G. A118G, located on exon 1 of the µ-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1), may alter how patients respond to opioid treatment. This polymorphism results in an exchange of adenine for guanine, which in turn leads to substitution of asparagine for the aspartic acid. In order to understand how individuals with the G …
The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The removal of soft tissue from skeletal remains is a process familiar to a wide array of scientific fields and the methods used to perform it are likewise numerous yet inconsistent. In forensic investigations and crime labs across the country, there lacks a standardization for this process. This lack of standardization pairs with a distinct lack of literature on the potential benefits and risks associated with each method as well as basic information on the proper amount of additives, temperatures, or time estimations. In a forensic context, human remains may be the only evidence available, which makes any damage or …

Objective
Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is known for its role as both a tumor suppressor and an oncogene, harboring a highly context-dependent role within a myriad of malignancies and cell types. In an immunological context, dysregulation of CAV1 expression has been shown to alter immunological signaling functions and suggests a pivotal role for CAV1 in the facilitation of proper immune responses. Nonetheless, it is still unknown how Cav1-deficiency and heterozygosity would impact the development and composition of lymphoid organs in mice. Herein, we investigated the impacts of Cav1-dysregulation on the lymphoid organs in young (12 weeks) and aged (36 weeks) …

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) modulate the transcriptional activity of all cells, including innate and adaptive immune cells. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate immunological effects of treatment with the HDACi panobinostat in HIV-infected patients during a clinical phase IIa latency reversal trial. Using flow cytometry, we investigated changes in T cell activation (CD69, CD38, HLA-DR) and the expression of CD39 and CTLA4 on regulatory T cells (Tregs). Whole-blood stimulations were performed and cytokine responses measured using Luminex. Gene expression in purified peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was evaluated using an Affymetrix HTA 2.0 gene chip. We found that proportions of CD4+ …

Determination of in-season N requirement for corn (Zea mays L.) is challenging due to interactions of genotype, environment, and management. Machine learning (ML), with its predictive power to tackle complex systems, may solve this barrier in the development of locally based N recommendations. The objective of this study was to explore application of ML methodologies to predict economic optimum nitrogen rate (EONR) for corn using data from 47 experiments across the US Corn Belt. Two features, a water table adjusted available water capacity (AWCwt) and a ratio of in-season rainfall to AWCwt (RAWCwt), were …
Habitat-Specific Capture Timing Of Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) Suggests That Predators Structure Temporal Activity Of Prey, Brian M. Connolly, John L. Orrock
Habitat-Specific Capture Timing Of Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) Suggests That Predators Structure Temporal Activity Of Prey, Brian M. Connolly, John L. Orrock
Biology Faculty Scholarship
Timing is an essential component of the choices that animals make: The likelihood of successful resource capture (and predator avoidance) depends not just on what an animal chooses to do, but when it chooses to do it. Despite the importance of activity timing, our ability to understand the forces that constrain activity timing has been limited because this aspect of animal behavior is shaped by several factors (e.g., interspecific competitors, predators, physical conditions), and it is difficult to examine activity timing in a setting where only a single factor is operating. Using an island system that makes it possible to …
Measuring Contact With Transgender Individuals: An Evaluation Of Factors Associated With Anti-Transgender Prejudice, Oak Reed
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Objectives: Research has suggested that transgender individuals experience high degrees of prejudice and discrimination (e.g., Grant et al., 2010; James et al., 2016). These attitudes affect transgender individuals in multiple domains, such as employment, education, healthcare, housing, public accommodations, and personal relationships (James et al., 2016). Importantly, contact as an intervention strategy has been shown to reduce anti-transgender prejudice quickly and effectively, especially when compared to other prejudice reduction methods (Walch et al., 2012; Case & Stewart, 2013; Tompkins, Sheilds, Hillman, & White, 2015). The aim of the current study was to explore how different types of contact (e.g., …
Ethnic Hierarchy In The Japanese Economy: Economic Effects Of Restricting Non-Japanese Workers To Occupational Niches (2018), Ryan Giannini
Ethnic Hierarchy In The Japanese Economy: Economic Effects Of Restricting Non-Japanese Workers To Occupational Niches (2018), Ryan Giannini
International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper will analyze the economic implications of restricting the occupational choices and social mobility of non-Japanese workers in the Japanese economy. The paper will begin by using labor market segmentation theory (LMS) and split labor market theory (SLM) as bases to explain why formal and informal occupational restrictions exist in Japan. After defining these theories, the paper will then explore the historical context behind Japan’s restrictive labor policies by reviewing literature on Japanese cultural and genealogical “homogeneity” and its effects on Japan’s immigration, integration, and labor policies. After identifying the cultural impetus behind labor restrictions, the paper will then …

Statistical Analysis In Cancer Survivorship, Zhiyun Ge
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
The advance in cancer early detection and cancer treatment have led to the rapid growth in the number of cancer survivors. It is good news that cancer is more survivable than ever, however, it also brings new challenges. Cancer survivors are exposed to the risk of a second primary cancer. In Chapter 1 and Chapter 3, we investigated the survival of lung cancer patients with a history of previous cancer. Another challenge that cancer survivors need to face is the follow-up care. Many survivors found that they are “lost in transition” from cancer patients to cancer survivors. In Chapter 2, …

A Comparison Of Logistic Regression And Maximum Entropy For Distribution Modeling Of Range Plant Species (A Case Study In Rangelands Of Western Taftan, Southeastern Iran), Hossein Piri Sahragard, Majid Ajorlo
Turkish Journal of Botany
This study aimed to compare the efficiency of logistic regression and maximum entropy models for distribution modelling of plant species habitats in the rangelands of western Taftan, southeastern Iran. Vegetation cover was sampled using a systematic-randomized method. Soils were sampled at 0?30 and 30?60 cm depths through digging of eight soil profiles. The agreement between predictive maps generated by models with documented maps of habitats indicated that logistic regression was able to predict the distribution of Artemisia aucheri and Artemisia sieberi habitats at excellent (kappa value = 0.95) and weak (kappa value = 0.39) levels, respectively. On the other hand, …

Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this study, we develop a model of recurrent neural networks with functional dependence on piecewise constant argument of generalized type. Using the theoretical results obtained for functional differential equations with piecewise constant argument, we investigate conditions for existence and uniqueness of solutions, bounded solutions, and exponential stability of periodic solutions. We provide conditions based on the parameters of the model.

Natural Mates Of Frenet Curves In Euclidean 3-Space, Sharief Deshmukh, Bang-Yen Chen, Azeb Alghanemi
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
For each Frenet curve $\alpha $ in the Euclidean 3-space $\mathbb{E}^{3}$, there exists a unique unit speed curve $\beta$ tangent to the principal normal vector field of $\alpha $. We simply call this curve $\beta $ the natural mate of $\alpha$. The main purpose of this paper is to prove some relationships between a Frenet curve and its natural mate. In particular, we obtain some necessary and sufficient conditions for the natural mate of a Frenet curve to be a helix, a spherical curve, or a curve of constant curvature. Several applications of our main results are also presented.

Sustaining Temporal Peace: A Worldview For Sustainable Living Inspired By Saint Augustine’S Philosophy, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
My paper aims to use the philosophical resources of Saint Augustine’s thought, particularly as found in the City of God, in order to sketch a basic worldview which can educate and lead people towards living lives that promote sustainable development. Specifically, I wish to show how Saint Augustine’s concepts of order, rightly ordered love, and temporal peace can serve as material to create a rough metaphysical framework in which human beings are understood to be an integrated part of a greater whole which is the earth. The ethical corollary of this framework is that human beings should act in such …

RNA interference (RNAi) was discovered almost 20 years ago and has been exploited worldwide to silence genes in plants and animals. A decade later, it was found that transforming plants with an RNAi construct targeting an insect gene could protect the plant against feeding by that insect. Production of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) in a plant to affect the viability of a herbivorous animal is termed trans-kingdom RNAi (TK-RNAi). Since this pioneering work, there have been many further examples of successful TK-RNAi, but also reports of failed attempts and unrepeatable experiments. Recently, three laboratories have shown that producing dsRNA in a …

Genetics And Mechanisms Underlying Transmission Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus By The Wheat Curl Mite, Satyanarayana Tatineni, Gary L. Hein
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV, genus Tritimovirus; family Potyviridae) is the most economically important virus of wheat in the Great Plains region of the USA. WSMV is transmitted by the eriophyid wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella Keifer. In contrast to Hemipteran-borne plant viruses, the mode and mechanism of eriophyid mite transmission of viruses have remained poorly understood, mostly due to difficulty of working with these ~200 μm long microscopic creatures. Among eriophyid-transmitted plant viruses, relatively extensive work has been performed on population genetics of WCMs, WSMV determinants involved in WCM transmission, and localization of WSMV virions and …

Trace elements such as copper and cobalt have been associated with virus-host interactions. However, studies to show the effect of conjugation of copper(II) or cobalt(III) metal centers to thiosemicarbazone ligand(s) derived from either food additives or mosquito repellent such as 2-acetylethiazole or citral, respectively, on Zika virus (ZIKV) or dengue virus (serotype 2; DENV2) infections have not been explored. In this study, we show that four compounds comprising of thiosemicarbazone ligand derived from 2-acetylethiazole viz., (E)-N-ethyl-2-[1-(thiazol-2-yl)ethylidene]hydrazinecarbothioamide (acetylethTSC) (compound 1), a copper(II) complex with acetylethTSC as a ligand (compound 2), a thiosemicarbazone ligand-derived from citral (compound 3) and a cobalt(III) complex …

Tick population control technologies have been studied for several decades but no method is successful in all situations. The success of each technology depends on tick species identity and abundance, host species identity and abundance, phenology of both ticks and hosts, geographic region, and a multitude of other factors. Here we review current technologies, presenting an overview of each and its effect on three common tick species in the eastern United States: blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis (Say; Ixodida: Ixodidae)), lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum (Linnaeus; Ixodida: Ixodidae)), and American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis (Say; Ixodida: Ixodidae)). Adiposity And Fat Metabolism During Combined Fasting And Lactation In Elephant Seals, Melinda Fowler, Cory Champagne, Daniel Croker
Adiposity And Fat Metabolism During Combined Fasting And Lactation In Elephant Seals, Melinda Fowler, Cory Champagne, Daniel Croker
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Animals that fast depend on mobilizing lipid stores to power metabolism. Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) incorporate extended fasting into several life-history stages: development, molting, breeding and lactation. The physiological processes enabling fasting and lactation are important in the context of the ecology and life history of elephant seals. The rare combination of fasting and lactation depends on the efficient mobilization of lipid from adipose stores and its direction into milk production. The mother elephant seal must ration her finite body stores to power maintenance metabolism, as well as to produce large quantities of lipid and protein rich …

Probing Two-Dimensional Semiconductor And Biological Tissue By Nonlinear Optical Microspectroscopy, Mohammad A. Mokim
Open Access Dissertations
Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), exhibit remarkable optical properties which are of great potential for applications in modern electronics. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the dispersion of the second order resonant nonlinearity (χ(2)) in the single layer TMDC. We begin with the study of the nonlinear optical properties of monolayer TMDC, WSe2. We experimentally obtain the χ(2) dispersion data from the single layer sample of WSe2 by using broadband ultrashort pulse laser sources. The broadband pulse is generated by specially designed photonic crystal fiber (PCF). This PCF fiber …

Two of the most ecologically and economically important species in the Mid- Atlantic Bight are Atlantic menhaden and the Atlantic striped bass. These species are important for human prosecuted fisheries, but these two species are also closely linked through ecosystem dynamics that are influenced by interactions between these species such as through predation. Beyond striped bass and menhaden, there are also other important species that are linked in this ecosystem. The focus of this dissertation is to estimate the trophic interactions among several important fish species in the Mid- Atlantic Bight, with an emphasis on the interactions between menhaden and …

There is, without question, a public health crisis in the United States arising from both illicit and prescription opioid misuse, addiction, and overdose. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is one regulator with an important role to play in minimizing the harms associated with prescription opioids, while also ensuring that prescription opioids are available for the evidence-based management of pain. One question, however, is to what extent the agency can consider in its decisions to approve opioids and keep existing ones on the market the provider and patient behaviors contributing to the epidemic. This is, in part, because FDA’s approval …

Analysing Intonation Of The Pied Butcherbird, Jean-Michel Maujean
Theses : Honours
Native to Australia, the Pied Butcherbird has been extensively studied and transcribed by previous composers, notably including Olivier Messiaen. This may be due to richness and diversity in each bird’s repertoire, along with parallels drawn from Western Tonality. Hollis Taylor has conducted extensive study in this field, notably with an analysis of a transcription made by Messiaen, that was incorporated in his piece Éclairs sur l'au- delà (1988-91). Coupled with the original field recording, Taylor’s analysis and Messiaen’s score, this study will reanalyse the original recording from which Messiaen made his transcription.

The Myth Of Free, John M. Newman
The Myth Of Free, John M. Newman
Articles
Myths matter. This Article is the first to confront a powerful myth that pervades modern economic, technological, and legal discourse: the Myth of Free. The prevailing view is that consumers capture massive welfare surplus from a flood of innovative new products that are offered free of charge. Economists, legal scholars, and industry stakeholders created an origin story-a myth-to explain how these products became "Free."
But that orthodox origin story is fatally flawed. This Article formalizes, then debunks, the Myth of Free and its underlying assumptions. The Myth is riddled with internal inconsistencies, logical errors, and factual. inaccuracies. In their place, …
