An Assessment Of Disability Access At The University Of Kentucky, Megan S. Coffinbargar
An Assessment Of Disability Access At The University Of Kentucky, Megan S. Coffinbargar
Oswald Research and Creativity Competition
This study assesses the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) compliance at the University of Kentucky. Twenty buildings frequently used by undergraduates at the University of Kentucky were evaluated using the ADA Checklist for Existing Facilities focusing on Title III, Public Accommodations, and Priority Two, Access to Goods and Services. Data was collected over two weeks (July 20, 2017-August 3, 2017) and then evaluated using descriptive analysis. Data was analyzed looking across checklist items, buildings, checklist categories, and construction dates. Looking across checklist items, compliance ranged from 12-20 buildings out of 20 possible with 18.485 buildings as the average. …
Productive Paddles And Productive Power: An Exploration Of Transgender Individuals' Negotiation Of Identity Through Bdsm Practices, Riley Zahn
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Productive Paddles and Productive Power: An Exploration of Transgender Individuals' Negotiation of Identity through BDSM Practices is a thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in Communication Studies from Minnesota State University, Mankato in April of 2018. It explores the ways in which transgender individuals negotiate their identities through BDSM practices. To collect data, eight semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted revealing four key themes: BDSM as identity negotiation, BDSM as power enactment, embodied confirmation, and BDSM as trauma survivorship. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications, limitations and future avenues of …
The Effects Of Surface Albedo And Initial Lignin Concentration On Photodegradation Of Sorghum Bicolor Litter, Joshua Niere
The Effects Of Surface Albedo And Initial Lignin Concentration On Photodegradation Of Sorghum Bicolor Litter, Joshua Niere
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Photodegradation has been recognized as a contributor to litter decomposition in a wide variety of ecosystems, however many of the mechanisms that drive it remain unknown. The primary focus of this study was to investigate the effect of surface albedo on the rate at which plant litter photodegrades. The first hypothesis that was tested was that surfaces with higher albedo will increase the rate of mass loss. The second hypothesis was that a wild type Sorghum bicolor with higher lignin concentration will degrade more rapidly than a double mutant variety. Three different artificial surface covers (aluminum foil, black paint, and …

Self-Disclosure, Gender, And Patient Satisfaction In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Khadiza Tul Jannat
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
It has been well established that the doctor-patient relationship is integral for providing quality health care and sustaining patient satisfaction. Additionally, research has indicated that doctors' self-disclosure is considered as an essential interpersonal component of relational development. In terms of the doctor-patient interaction, previous research has produced numerous studies investigating the relationship between doctors' communication behaviors and patient satisfaction. Scholars have also explored how communication styles are associated with doctors' gender, and patient satisfaction. However, there is still a gap in the existing research concerning the connections between doctors' self-disclosure, gender, and patient satisfaction in doctor-patient interactions. My qualitative study …
Across An Ecotone: An Analysis Of Late Prehistoric Artifacts From Southern Minnesota, Jamison M. Jordan
Across An Ecotone: An Analysis Of Late Prehistoric Artifacts From Southern Minnesota, Jamison M. Jordan
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The transition zone between the Plains and Woodlands in Southern Minnesota is not homogenous, neither in terms of ecology or culture. The deciduous forests and oak barrens of the Eastern Woodlands present an ecological environment with a resource base much different than the tallgrass prairies of the Northeastern Plains, and the material remains left behind by peoples inhabiting both areas reflected this. Subjects such as the exchange of technology, such as one culture adopting select tools or traits from populations living on the other side of the ecotone, as well as the movement of people in general across this particular …

Rebuilt And Remade: The Florida Citrus Industry, 1909-1939, James Padgett
Rebuilt And Remade: The Florida Citrus Industry, 1909-1939, James Padgett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prior to orange juice concentrate, Florida citrus was already an industrialized agricultural sector. This thesis explores the early-20th-century Florida citrus industry and demonstrates that contemporary farming practices were influential in advancing how citrus was produced, processed, worked, marketed, and regulated in early-20th-century Florida. Restarted after devastating freezes in 1894-1895, resolute Florida growers rebuilt their groves into marvels of large-scale citrus fruit production. Continuing a legacy in experimental crossbreeding, improved varieties of citrus were developed to lengthen the season and markets. Advocated by nurserymen and university educators, biological innovation helped the citrus thrive in the 1910s and 1920s from adverse weather …
(In)Secure Communities: Assessing The Impacts Of Secure Communities On Immigrant Participation In Los Angeles Health Clinics, Grace Reckers
(In)Secure Communities: Assessing The Impacts Of Secure Communities On Immigrant Participation In Los Angeles Health Clinics, Grace Reckers
Scripps Senior Theses
The United States Department of Homeland Security launched Secure Communities in 2009, expanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) jurisdiction and establishing partnerships between federal immigration officers and municipal law enforcement agencies (LEAs) across the country. The effects of Secure Communities have been numerous. While rates of deportations had been rising annually for decades, the program granted ICE with even more power to detain and deport undocumented immigrants and dramatically increased federal collaboration with LEAs. Secure Communities was terminated by then Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson in 2014; replaced by the comparable, but lesser known, Priority Enforcement Program (PEP); and …
Characterizing Biogeochemical Shifts In Two Salix Caroliniana Michx. Encroached Freshwater Subtropical Marshes, Janet Ho
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Shrub encroachment is a common disturbance in wetlands, but little is known about how shrub encroachment impacts functions such as carbon (C) storage and nitrogen (N) cycling. The objective of this thesis was to identify differences in physiochemical properties (within soil, water and leaf tissue) and biogeochemical processes (soil respiration, enzyme activity, litter decomposition, and N cycling) in two subtropical freshwater marshes encroached by coastal plain willow (Salix caroliniana Michx.). Two study regions (Moccasin Island and Lake Apopka) were selected because of their location in the St. John's River watershed and their unique histories and hydroperiod, allowing for an investigation …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Because meaningful observations of natural history are not always part of larger studies, important pieces of information often are unreported. Small details, however, can fill gaps in understanding and lead to interesting questions about ecological relationships or environmental change. We have compiled recent important observations of distribution, deformities, and foods of various vertebrates, observations of winter activity of a woodchuck (Marmota monax) and winter torpor of a hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), and also report a very unusual case of bilateral gynandromorphism in a Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). These unique observations continue to add immensely to …

Avian Frugivory In A Fruiting Mulberry Tree (Morus Rubra) In Arkansas, J. L. Jackson Ii, Ragupathy Kannan
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A fruiting Mulberry tree (Morus rubra) was observed for 67 hours in the spring of 2016 and 2017 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. A total of 172 five-minute scans were performed, during which the following parameters were recorded: species visited, number of individuals of each species, time of visitations, and foraging tier. Between each scan, the foraging rate (number of fruits consumed/min) and inter- and intra- specific aggressive interactions were recorded. A total of 3465 observations of individual birds from 32 species was recorded. Species diversity index was higher in the upper half of the tree. The mean foraging …

Gene Flow And Genetic Structure Of Two Of Arkansas’S Rarest Darter Species (Teleostei: Percidae), The Arkansas Darter, Etheostoma Cragini, And The Least Darter, E. Microperca, Justin Baker, Brian Wagner, Robert Wood
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Distinguishing the effects of naturally caused historical fragmentation from those of contemporary landscape modification is critically important to understanding the consequences of human influences on patterns of gene flow and population dynamics. Nonetheless, relatively few recent studies focusing on this issue have dealt with species that showed evidence of historical fragmentation. In the current study, we disentangled the effects of fragmentation operating over separate timescales on two darter species, Etheostoma cragini and E. microperca, from the Ozark Highlands. Formerly more wide-spread within this region in Arkansas, these species now occur only in highly isolated habitats (i.e., spring-runs). …

Primeness In Early Season Arkansas Raccoon Pelts, D. Blake Sasse
Primeness In Early Season Arkansas Raccoon Pelts, D. Blake Sasse
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Trapping seasons in the United States are generally set around the time of the year when pelts are in “prime” condition and are in their most valuable state. In order to assess whether the start of the Arkansas trapping season is at an appropriate date 122 raccoons were captured during the month of November in 2014 and 2015. Based on the evaluation of experienced fur dealers, the percentage of pelts in prime condition was then assessed on weekly and half-monthly basis. This study indicates that starting the trapping season in the last half of the month may maximize the percentage …
