A Machine Learning Approach To Assess The Separation Of Seismocardiographic Signals By Respiration, Brian Solar
A Machine Learning Approach To Assess The Separation Of Seismocardiographic Signals By Respiration, Brian Solar
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The clinical usage of Seismocardiography (SCG) is increasing as it is being shown to be an effective non-invasive measurement for heart monitoring. SCG measures the vibrational activity at the chest surface and applications include non-invasive assessment of myocardial contractility and systolic time intervals. Respiratory activity can also affect the SCG signal by changing the hemodynamic characteristics of cardiac activity and displacing the position of the heart. Other clinically significant information, such as systolic time intervals, can thus manifest themselves differently in an SCG signal during inspiration and expiration. Grouping SCG signals into their respective respiratory cycle can mitigate this issue. …
Investigation Of Aminoglycoside Induced Nanoparticle Self-Assemblies, Michael Leong
Investigation Of Aminoglycoside Induced Nanoparticle Self-Assemblies, Michael Leong
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Aminoglycosides are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics that, under neutral pH conditions, carry a positive charge. The net cationic charge arises from the high number of amino groups in the core structure of aminoglycosides. Previous studies performed have shown that negatively charged citrate ligand-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can interact with various biomolecules such as aminoglycosides. AuNPs bound to biomolecules have been used in conjugation with various assaying techniques to detect and study compounds in vitro and in vivo. AuNPs also have strong light scattering properties that can be used with a wide variety of imaging and assaying techniques. Our laboratory …

Epigenetic dysregulation is present in both myeloid and lymphoid disorders, with important differences reported between myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)/acute myeloid leukemia (AML), on one hand, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), on the other. Qualitative differences are reported in MDS/AML with gene fusions (e.g. TET1/LCX) and somatic mutations in epigenetic regulators (e.g. DNMT3A, TET2, IDH1/2), while differences in CLL are predominantly quantitative (e.g. DNMT3A, TET2). Indeed, and as supported by studies in animal models, a defective DNA methylation/demethylation process represents a competitive advantage to the myeloid lineage and an early event in MDS/AML, while in the case of CLL, epigenetic events appear …

Demonstration Of A Robust All-Silicon-Carbide Intracortical Neural Interface, Evans K. Bernardin, Christopher L. Frewin, Richard Everly, Jawad Ul Hassan, Stephen E. Saddow
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Intracortical neural interfaces (INI) have made impressive progress in recent years but still display questionable long-term reliability. Here, we report on the development and characterization of highly resilient monolithic silicon carbide (SiC) neural devices. SiC is a physically robust, biocompatible, and chemically inert semiconductor. The device support was micromachined from p-type SiC with conductors created from n-type SiC, simultaneously providing electrical isolation through the resulting p-n junction. Electrodes possessed geometric surface area (GSA) varying from 496 to 500 K μm2. Electrical characterization showed high-performance p-n diode behavior, with typical turn-on voltages of ~2.3 V and reverse bias leakage …

Analyzing The Non-Mainstream Left And Populist-Radical Right: Do Party Promises For Women Actually Translate Into More Women Leaders And Members?, Brianna Bacigalupo
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Why are some parties referred to as “Männerparteien,” or men’s parties, while other parties are considered to be “female women-friendly”? This study incorporates a two-part model system to assess whether the ways in which party platforms exhibit gender ideology affects women’s leadership and membership in non-mainstream left (NML) parties and populist-radical right (PRR) parties. Using content analysis, this study analyzes election manifestos from a variety of parties within Europe in order to characterize the relative woman friendliness of the gender ideology. In turn, the study attempts to discover whether differences in gender ideology lead to differences in women’s access to …
Breastfeeding As A Mechanism To Reduce Postpartum Depression With Weight As A Major Contributing Factor In Hispanic Women, Celia Wilson
Breastfeeding As A Mechanism To Reduce Postpartum Depression With Weight As A Major Contributing Factor In Hispanic Women, Celia Wilson
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Postpartum Depression (PPD) is the most common childbearing-related illness around the globe affecting both mothers and their children; yet minimal longitudinal research has been done to study the effect of depressive symptomatology on breastfeeding. This study analyzes how the benefits of breastfeeding past six months, postpartum, can be used as a treatment mechanism for postpartum depression (PPD) with the major contributing factor of gestational weight gain (GWG) in Hispanic women recently immigrated to the United States. I investigated journal articles in four main domains: the likelihood of women presenting with depressive symptomatology as a result of weight gain to initiate …

The Use Of Rhyme, Rhythm, And Melody As A Form Of Repetition Priming To Aid In Encoding, Storage, And Retrieval Of Semantic Memories In Alzheimer’S Patients, Faiz Plastikwala
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
Millions are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease annually which can have debilitating effects on patient memory. Thus, finding new ways to help facilitate memory in these patients, especially through non-pharmaceutical means, has become increasingly important. I examined the use of melody, rhyme, and rhythm as encoding mechanisms to aid in the retrieval of long term semantic information by juxtaposing scholarly articles detailing experiments, each of which examined the effects of various facets of memory facilitation; this helped produce an idea of which devices are most effective. Additionally, I surveyed studies highlighting limitations of song implementation to craft an effective plan to …
Racial Prioritization In Black-White Relationships, Nia Tariq
Racial Prioritization In Black-White Relationships, Nia Tariq
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
The utilization of race as a proxy for evaluating different characteristics of others contains risk because it results in stereotyping and potential alienation of individuals from negatively judged groups. This concept motivated me to uncover the extent to which race affects intimate relationships amongst the historically opposed groups of blacks and whites in the United States. I am studying the historic racially-driven marginalization of blacks and the resulting relationship to recent dating and marriage patterns between black-white interracial pairs. I want to find out why the socioeconomic advantage held by whites is transmutated into dating culture, in order to understand …
Investigation Into The Role Of Manganese In The Growth Of The Opportunistic Pathogen Streptococcus Sanguinis, Brittany Spivey
Investigation Into The Role Of Manganese In The Growth Of The Opportunistic Pathogen Streptococcus Sanguinis, Brittany Spivey
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
While Streptococcus sanguinis plays a beneficial role in the oral cavity as a competitor of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, the bacteria that produce dental caries, it can cause deadly infective endocarditis if given the opportunity to colonize the vegetations that form over damaged endocardial tissue. Pre-existing heart conditions, surgery, and intravenous drug use predispose individuals to endocarditis. S. sanguinis growth and consequential virulence is significantly impeded by restriction to manganese. This is due to the resulting overwhelming oxidative stress and formation of reactive oxygen species which damage DNA and other cellular components. Manganese is essential for S. sanguinis proteins …
Computing Eigenmodes Of Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Using Radial Basis Functions, Vladimir Delengov
Computing Eigenmodes Of Elliptic Operators On Manifolds Using Radial Basis Functions, Vladimir Delengov
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In this work, a numerical approach based on meshless methods is proposed to obtain eigenmodes of Laplace-Beltrami operator on manifolds, and its performance is compared against existing alternative methods. Radial Basis Function (RBF)-based methods allow one to obtain interpolation and differentiation matrices easily by using scattered data points. We derive expressions for such matrices for the Laplace-Beltrami operator via so-called Reilly’s formulas and use them to solve the respective eigenvalue problem. Numerical studies of proposed methods are performed in order to demonstrate convergence on simple examples of one-dimensional curves and two-dimensional surfaces.

Experimental Infection Of Tadarida Brasiliensis With Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, The Fungus That Causes White-Nose Syndrome, Michelle L. Verant, Carol U. Meteyer, Benjamin Stading
KIP Articles
White-nose syndrome (WNS) is causing significant declines in populations of North American hibernating bats, and recent western and southern expansions of the disease have placed additional species at risk. Understanding differences in species susceptibility and identifying management actions to reduce mortality of bats from WNS are top research priorities. However, the use of wild-caught susceptible bats, such as Myotis lucifugus, as model species for WNS research is problematic and places additional pressure on remnant populations. We investigated the feasibility of using Tadarida brasiliensis, a highly abundant species of bat that tolerates captivity, as the basis for an experimental animal model …

Evidence For Anti-Pseudogymnoascus Destructans (Pd) Activity Of Propolis, Soumya Ghosh, Robyn Mcarthur, Zhi Chao Guo
KIP Articles
White-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats, caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), is a cutaneous infection that has devastated North American bat populations since 2007. At present, there is no effective method for controlling this disease. Here, we evaluated the effect of propolis against Pd in vitro. Using Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) medium, approximately 1.7 × 107 conidia spores of the Pd strain M3906-2/mL were spread on each plate and grown to form a consistent lawn. A Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion assay was employed using different concentrations of propolis (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%), in plates incubated at 8 …
A Proposed Taxonomy For The Systems Statistical Engineering Body Of Knowledge, Teddy Steven Cotter
A Proposed Taxonomy For The Systems Statistical Engineering Body Of Knowledge, Teddy Steven Cotter
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
In the ASEM-IAC 2012, Cotter (2012) identified the gaps in knowledge that statistical engineering needs to address, explored additional gaps in knowledge not addressed in the prior works, and set forth a working definition of and body of knowledge for statistical engineering. In the ASEM-IAC 2015, Cotter (2015) proposed a systemic causal Bayesian hierarchical model that addressed the knowledge gap needed to integrate deterministic mathematical engineering causal models within a stochastic framework. Missing, however, is the framework for specifying the hierarchical qualitative systems structures necessary and sufficient for specifying systemic causal Bayesian hierarchical models. In the ASEM-IAC 2016, Cotter (2016) …

Pathology-Informed Approach In Vulnerability Assessment Methods, Polinpapilinho F. Katina, Adrian V. Gheorghe, Charles B. Keating
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
A system pathology is a circumstance, condition, or pattern that acts to limit system performance, or lessen system viability, such that the likelihood of a system achieving performance expectation is reduced. The idea of pathology has been described in multiple fields, including computer science, organizational studies, policy analysis, system-of-systems engineering, and systems engineering. However, there is scarcity of literature describing relationship between system pathology and vulnerability assessment. The aim of this study lies at the intersection of system pathology and vulnerability assessment in engineered systems. First, authors provide the state of the art review of literature on system pathology. Second, …

A Method For Identification, Representation, And Assessment Of Complex System Pathologies In Acquisition Programs, Charles B. Keating, Polinpapilinho F. Katina, Keith F. Joiner, Joseph M. Bradley, Raed M. Jaradat
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
Acquisition programs continue to struggle with increasing complexity. High degrees of emergence, interconnectedness, and uncertainty are the norm rather than exception. The purpose of this research is to explore extension of ongoing research in complex system pathologies for acquisition programs. Significant advances have been made in development of deeper understanding of the nature of pathologies (deviations from healthy system function) and their implications for performance of complex systems. Complex system pathologies represent violations of underlying system principles. These violations negatively affect system governance functions (control, oversight, accountability) resulting in degradation of system performance. Greater understanding of complex system pathologies offers …

Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett
CMC Senior Theses
Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. There is an injury epidemic in conventionally shod populations that …

Selective Inhibition Of Ctcf Binding By Ias Directs Tet-Mediated Reprogramming Of 5-Hydroxymethylation Patterns In Ias-Transformed Cells, Matthew Rea, Tyler Gripshover, Yvonne N. Fondufe-Mittendorf
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Methylation at cytosine (5mC) is a fundamental epigenetic DNA modification recently associated with iAs-mediated carcinogenesis. In contrast, the role of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), the oxidation product of 5mC in iAs-mediated carcinogenesis is unknown. Here we assess the hydroxymethylome in iAs-transformed cells, showing that dynamic modulation of hydroxymethylated DNA is associated with specific transcriptional networks. Moreover, this pathologic iAs-mediated carcinogenesis is characterized by a shift toward a higher hydroxymethylation pattern genome-wide. At specific promoters, hydroxymethylation correlated with increased gene expression. Furthermore, this increase in hydroxymethylation occurs concurrently with an upregulation of ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes that oxidize 5-methylcytosine (5mC) in DNA. To …

Capturing Naturally Occurring Emotional Suppression As It Unfolds In Couple Interactions, Jordan D. Dworkin, Virginia Zimmerman, Robert J. Waldinger, Marc S. Schulz
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Most research examining the consequences of suppressing emotional expression has focused on either experimentally manipulated and conscious suppression, or self-reported suppression behavior. This study examined suppression as it naturally occurred in couple (n= 105) discussions regarding a challenging topic. A Suppression Index (SI) was created by calculating the difference between continuous self-reports of emotional experience, obtained using cued video recall, and coders’ continuous ratings of expressed emotion. Suppression was common for both men and women, though there was also substantial individual variation. Autocorrelations of the SIwere used to tap Suppressive Rigidity (Srig), …

Effect Of Empagliflozin On Insulin Sensitivity In The Lean And Obese Zucker Rat: A Model Of Metabolic Syndrome, Veda Gayatri Sushma Penta
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Metabolic syndrome is one of the fastest growing health problems in the world. The medical costs associated with treating this disorder are staggering. Allowed to proceed untreated, metabolic syndrome can lead to a markedly decreased quality of life and a variety of medical conditions including heart and kidney failure. Whether the sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor Empagliflozin can be used to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome is not well understood. This proposal is specifically designed to address this gap in our knowledge. The expected outcomes of this work will identify the time course and degree of interrelatedness between changes …
Destruction, Reconstruction, And Remembrance: Exploring 'Memory' And 'Environment' Through Pennsylvania World War I Memorials In France, Amy Collins
Honors Theses
After examining the substantial efforts at land reclamation and environmental mitigation accompanying the State of Pennsylvania’s construction of memorials after World War I in France, I discovered a strong relationship between post-war memorialization and environmental mitigation in the areas in which the environmental consequences of WWI continue to affect humans and wildlife. My research illuminates how cultural impulses to build memorials that acknowledged the vast losses, acts of valor, and victories heavily influenced mitigation of France’s ecologically damaged Western Front. Many of France’s former battlefields, particularly in the devastated area known as the Red Zone, weren’t accessible to visitors before …
Addressing Stigma And Gender Inequities To Strengthen Hiv And Aids Programming: A Focus On Key Populations, Population Council
Addressing Stigma And Gender Inequities To Strengthen Hiv And Aids Programming: A Focus On Key Populations, Population Council
HIV and AIDS
Over the past 20 years, the Population Council has generated evidence around the types of stigma experienced by key populations at higher risk for HIV, and has designed and tested strategies aimed at reducing stigma and improving HIV programs and outcomes. Key populations (KPs), such as female sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and people who use drugs, often face multiple stigmas that reinforce one another. Evidence generated by the Population Council has shown that addressing and reducing stigma faced by KPs is a crucial step toward improving HIV prevention and treatment outcomes. This brief summarizes …
