A Single Differential Equation Description Of Membrane Properties Underlying The Action Potential And The Axon Electric Field, Robert Melendy Jan 2018

A Single Differential Equation Description Of Membrane Properties Underlying The Action Potential And The Axon Electric Field, Robert Melendy

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

In a succession of articles published over 65 years ago, Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley established what now forms our physical understanding of excitation in nerve, and how the axon conducts the action potential. They uniquely quantified the movement of ions in the nerve cell during the action potential, and demonstrated that the action potential is the result of a depolarizing event across the cell membrane. They confirmed that a complete depolarization event is followed by an abrupt increase in voltage that propagates longitudinally along the axon, accompanied by considerable increases in membrane conductance. In an …

Nano–Bio Interactions: Nanomedicine And Nanotoxicology, Hugh Byrne, S. Mukherjee, Pratap C. Naha

Articles

The 21st century has truly become the age of nanotechnology. Nanomaterials, design strategies, and processing have already made a significant impact in areas of materials science and electronics, with many commercial applications already being available on the consumer market. However, the ability to manipulate material functions and interactions on a scale of tens of nanometers, e.g., biological subcellular organelles, may yet prove to have the most significant impact on human health and the environment.

Reactive Oxygen Species And Nitric Oxide Signaling In Bystander Cells, Kishore Kumar Jella, Roisin Moriarty, Brendan Mcclean, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng

Articles

It is now well accepted that radiation induced bystander effects can occur in cells exposed to media from irradiated cells. The aim of this study was to follow the bystander cells in real time following addition of media from irradiated cells and to determine the effect of inhibiting these signals. A human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT cells, was irradiated (0.005, 0.05 and 0.5 Gy) with γ irradiation, conditioned medium was harvested after one hour and added to recipient bystander cells. Reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, Glutathione levels, caspase activation, cytotoxicity and cell viability was measured after the addition of irradiated …

A Simple Model For Cell Type Recognition Using 2d-Correlation Analysis Of Ftir Images From Breast Cancer Tissue, Mohamed H.M. Ali, Fazle Rakib, Khalid A. Al-Saad, Rafif Al-Saady, Fiona Lyng, Erik Goormaghtigh

Articles

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer after lung cancer. So far, in clinical practice, most cancer parameters originating from histopathology rely on the visualization by a pathologist of microscopic structures observed in stained tissue sections, including immunohistochemistry markers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy provides a biochemical fingerprint of a biopsy sample and, together with advanced data analysis techniques, can accurately classify cell types. Yet, one of the challenges when dealing with FTIR imaging is the slow recording of the data. One cm2 tissue section requires several hours of image recording. We show in the present paper that …

Toxicology Of Engineered Nanoparticles: Focus On Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimers, Pratap Naha, Sourav Prasanna Mukherjee, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Engineered nanomaterials are increasingly being developed for paints, sunscreens, cosmetics, industrial lubricants, tyres, semiconductor devices, and also for biomedical applications such as in diagnostics, therapeutics, and contrast agents. As a result, nanomaterials are being manufactured, transported, and used in larger and larger quantities, and potential impacts on environmental and human health have been raised. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers are specifically suitable for biomedical applications. They are well-defined nanoscale molecules which contain a 2-carbon ethylenediamine core and primary amine groups at the surface. The systematically variable structural architecture and the large internal free volume make these dendrimers an attractive option for drug …

Comparison Of Three Assembly Strategies For A Heterozygous Seedless Grapevine Genome Assembly, Sagar Patal, Zhixiu Lu, Xiaozhu Jin, Padmapriya Swaminathan, Erliang Zeng, Anne Y. Fennell Dr

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Background
De novo heterozygous assembly is an ongoing challenge requiring improved assembly approaches. In this study, three strategies were used to develop de novo Vitis vinifera ‘Sultanina’ genome assemblies for comparison with the inbred V. vinifera (PN40024 12X.v2) reference genome and a published Sultanina ALLPATHS-LG assembly (AP). The strategies were: 1) a default PLATANUS assembly (PLAT_d) for direct comparison with AP assembly, 2) an iterative merging strategy using METASSEMBLER to combine PLAT_d and AP assemblies (MERGE) and 3) PLATANUS parameter modifications plus GapCloser (PLAT*_GC).
Results
The three new assemblies were greater in size than the AP assembly. PLAT*_GC had the …

Criminality Of Women, Danielle Orr Jan 2018

Criminality Of Women, Danielle Orr

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Criminological theories construct the basis of criminology, as these theories are used to develop preventative and rehabilitative measures. These criminological theories are developed based on standardized testing and empirical research conducted by theorists within the field. At a glance, the theories developed should cover all forms of crimes conducted by a range of individuals. However, a review of the literature determined further analysis of criminological theories must be conducted. This study looks at theories that are most common within criminology and determine whether or not women are equally represented and depicted. By analyzing strain, labeling, biological, and social control theories, …

Wayne State University Dissertations

Background and purpose: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is an existing social problem that affects children worldwide, leading to poor psychological outcomes in adulthood. Childhood adversities including CSA account for 44.6% of childhood and 26%–32% of adult-onset psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, CSA is the second leading cause of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and influences an array of other outcomes such as depression, anxiety, hostility, and low self-esteem. Worldwide, approximately 8%–13% of girls have experienced sexual abuse. According to the few studies conducted in Arabic countries, CSA ranges from 7%–27%. Coping with CSA is a well-studied factor in regard to its impact on …

Reconciling The Divide: A Chat With Bill Drayton On Social Inclusion, Tamara Prabhakar, Bill Drayton Jan 2018

Reconciling The Divide: A Chat With Bill Drayton On Social Inclusion, Tamara Prabhakar, Bill Drayton

Social Space

Within the confi nes of day-to-day routines, it is often diffi cult to cognitively grasp the exponential rate at which the social and industrial sectors are changing. In recent years, the rising prominence of social entrepreneurship is trending as an evolved, levelling collaborative model for solving social problems more effectively than traditionally rigid hierarchical structures of management. Social entrepreneurs hold the distinct ability to innovate and form novel solutions based on their fi rst-hand cultural knowledge and experiences rather than from popular generalised perceptions or indirect comprehension of situations from diffused information.

New School: Can We Rethink Education For An Inclusive Future?, Chris Oestereich

Social Space

It is not always easy to give career advice to young people. In my time, there were virtual paths laid out for youths. Most of them started similarly. Go to school. Work hard. Get good grades. Squeeze in admirable activities. Decide what you want to be for the rest of your life. (The last bit was tricky.) Based on these, people chose a fork in the road that they believed would suit them and then made the best of it, earned a degree and then set off to start their careers. Not everyone had the chance to head down these …

The Role Of Krüppel-Like Factor 5 In The Pathogenesis Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Ping He Jan 2018

The Role Of Krüppel-Like Factor 5 In The Pathogenesis Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Ping He

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasm (PanIN) is the most common type of precursor lesions of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In the mouse pancreas, oncogenic Kras mutations are sufficient for spontaneous PanIN formation, which can be further expedited by cerulein-induced pancreatitis. Krüppel-like factor 5 (KLF5), a triple zinc-finger transcription factor, is differentially upregulated in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Recent evidence shows that KLF5 is normally absent in acinar cells and is expressed in PanIN and PDAC in human tissues. The role of KLF5 in PanIN formation is unknown. To investigate whether KLF5 is required for early oncogenic Kras-driven tumorigenesis, I developed genetic engineered …

Understanding Nitrogen Uptake In The Rhizosphere Of A Mycorrhizal Fungus And Plant System, Tiffany Whitney Victor Jan 2018

Understanding Nitrogen Uptake In The Rhizosphere Of A Mycorrhizal Fungus And Plant System, Tiffany Whitney Victor

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The mechanistic links between plants and growth promoting micro-organisms in an eco-system involved in the production of biomass are currently very poorly understood. Observing the nutrient changes in the rhizosphere is a key step to understanding the molecular dynamics involved in these symbiotic interactions and nutrient pathways that facilitate plant growth. To study such a nutrient flow, a new application of Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging (FTIRI) was developed that entailed growing Populus tremuloides seedlings on a thin, nutrient-enriched Phytagel matrix that allows pixel to pixel measurement of the distribution of nutrients, in particular, nitrate and ammonium and sucrose added as …

Obesity: Modern Medicine Vs. Lifestyle, Jenny Christianson

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Obesity is a rising epidemic, and is one of the most common, costly and preventable health problems the world is experiencing today (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, [CDC], 2017).

 From this, it is important to establish an effective treatment plan that can be implemented across the nation for maximum patient benefit.

 Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are important to any health care plan and are equally necessary to reduce health risks. However, in certain patients, lifestyle changes are not enough due to the maladaptive biologic process in their brain. Thus, additional treatment options need to …

Treatment Options For Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Efficacy, Risks, Benefits, Katherine A. Hennager Jan 2018

Treatment Options For Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Efficacy, Risks, Benefits, Katherine A. Hennager

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic, recurrent follicular occlusion disease with painful, sometimes debilitating, cutaneous draining lesions and subcutaneous abscesses (DynaMed Plus, 2016). Hidradenitis suppurativa is understood to be a multifactorial disease that is hard to treat in some patients, especially those with a severe form of the disease. For this project, the efficacy of adalimumab for hidradenitis suppurativa was assessed and whether it is more beneficial than traditional treatments used. Adalimumab is a TNF-alpha inhibitor which belongs to the biologic DMARDs drug class. Kimball et al. (2012) found that at week 16 of their trial 3.9% of the placebo patients, …
