The Impact Of Circadian Misalignment On Cardiometabolic Health, Cynthia Marie Mills Jan 2018

The Impact Of Circadian Misalignment On Cardiometabolic Health, Cynthia Marie Mills

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The circadian system is important in all living organisms because it generates a 24-hour rhythm for physiological and behavioral processes enabling anticipation and adaptation to daily changes in the environment. The prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases, which are linked to lifestyle choices, has been rising at an alarming rate. Modernization and globalization are two of many factors to blame for lifestyle changes resulting in circadian disruption. The purpose of this literature review is to explore circadian misalignment with regards to its mechanism and impact on cardiometabolic health and to determine possible interventional measures. The primary focus is on lifestyle change, particularly …

Decreased Mortality Of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy And Down Syndrome, Mitchell Volin Jan 2018

Decreased Mortality Of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy And Down Syndrome, Mitchell Volin

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The genetic cause of significant disorders like Down syndrome (DS) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is well documented. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a co-morbid condition, is tied to mortality among these groups. Individuals with the ability to communicate their symptoms and actively participate in treatment are at an advantage with subsequent benefit. DS and DMD significantly decrease physical ability and communication capacity. Genetic research has allowed for earlier identification of, or predisposition for, the development of PAH. Work has also progressed toward manipulation at the genetic level to decrease the severity and even eradicate the cardiopulmonary disorder. This information is …

Chaotic Attractor Hopping Yields Logic Operations., K Murali, Sudeshna Sinha, Vivek Kohar, Behnam Kia, William L Ditto Jan 2018

Chaotic Attractor Hopping Yields Logic Operations., K Murali, Sudeshna Sinha, Vivek Kohar, Behnam Kia, William L Ditto

Faculty Research 2018

Certain nonlinear systems can switch between dynamical attractors occupying different regions of phase space, under variation of parameters or initial states. In this work we exploit this feature to obtain reliable logic operations. With logic output 0/1 mapped to dynamical attractors bounded in distinct regions of phase space, and logic inputs encoded by a very small bias parameter, we explicitly demonstrate that the system hops consistently in response to an external input stream, operating effectively as a reliable logic gate. This system offers the advantage that very low-amplitude inputs yield highly amplified outputs. Additionally, different dynamical variables in the system …

Crossing The Digital Divide: Monism, Dualism And The Reason Collective Action Is Critical For Cyber Theory Production, Christopher Whyte Jan 2018

Crossing The Digital Divide: Monism, Dualism And The Reason Collective Action Is Critical For Cyber Theory Production, Christopher Whyte

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

In studying topics in cyber conflict and cyber-security governance, scholars must ask—arguably more so than has been the case with any other emergent research agenda—where the epistemological and ontological value of different methods lies. This article describes the unique, dual methodological challenges inherent in the multifaceted program on global cyber-security and asks how problematic they are for scholarly efforts to construct knowledge about digital dynamics in world affairs. I argue that any answer to this question will vary depending on how one perceives the social science enterprise. While traditional dualistic perspectives on social science imply unique challenges for researcher, a …

The Association Between The Coach-Athlete Relationship And Burnout Among High School Coaches, Scott Westfall, Eric M. Martin, Daniel Gould Jan 2018

The Association Between The Coach-Athlete Relationship And Burnout Among High School Coaches, Scott Westfall, Eric M. Martin, Daniel Gould

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Burnout is a term that continues to raise considerable concern among high school coaches and administrators (Raedeke, 1997) and has shown to have negative effects on coaches and athletes alike (Price & Weiss, 2000; Vealey, Armstrong, & Comar, 1998). While burnout has shown to have significant adverse effects, few studies have examined how the coach-athlete relationship may affect a coach s level of perceived burnout. This study sought to understand if the coach-athlete relationship predicted coach burnout. High school coaches (69 males, 62 females) completed the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q; Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004), the Coaching Burnout Questionnaire, a modified …

Evaluating The Application Of Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation Technique To Stabilize Expansive Soils, Bhaskar Chittoori, Sikha Neupane

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Expansive soils, also known as swell-shrink soils have been a problem for civil infrastructures including roads and foundations from ancient times. The use of chemical additives such as cement and lime to stabilize expansive soils is a common practice among geotechnical engineers, especially for lightly loaded structures. However, several occurrences of subgrade failures have been observed after stabilizing with chemical additives. Hence, engineers are in search of sustainable stabilization alternatives. Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) is gaining attention as an environmentally friendly soil improvement technique. Several researchers have successfully tested its feasibility in mitigating liquefaction-induced problems in sandy soils. In …

Managing Ambiguous Amphibians: Feral Cows, People, And Place In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson Jan 2018

Managing Ambiguous Amphibians: Feral Cows, People, And Place In Ukraine’S Danube Delta, Tanya Richardson

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes how a herd of feral cattle emerged in the core zone of Ukraine’s Danube Biosphere Reserve and why it still exists despite numerous challenges to the legality of its presence there. Answering these questions requires an analytical approach that begins from the premise that animals, plants, substances, documents, and technologies are active participants in making social and political worlds rather than passive objects of human intervention and manipulation. Drawing together insights from multispecies ethnography, animal geography, amphibious anthropology, and studies of nature protection in former Soviet republics, the author argues that the feral cattle exist because they …

Low-Impact Yoga Improves Flexibility, But Has No Effect On Heart Rate Variability In Sedentary Adult Women, Lauren Marie Shafer

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among adults in the United States and more than 600,000 people per year die when the condition goes untreated. Many cardiovascular maladies, such as high blood pressure and heart disease, can be markedly improved with lifestyle changes, including eating a healthy diet and regular exercise. In this study, 15 sedentary adult women (aged 19-63 years) participated in a prescribed 12-week yoga program. Electrocardiography was used to measure Heart Rate Variability, a tool that assesses autonomic tone on the heart. Autonomic nervous system activity is assessed at VLF, LF, and HF spectral components. …

Connecting High School Mathematics And Abstract Algebra, Abbey Scupin

Mathematics Theses

This thesis focuses on the connections between the content covered in college level abstract algebra and high school mathematics courses. The purpose of studying and understanding these connections is in hopes to improve the way concepts are presented at the high school level to give students a deeper understanding of the mathematics. High school mathematics teachers are required to take specific college courses such as abstract algebra before they can teach high school mathematics. However, many teachers do not believe they can use the complex ideas learned in college to teach their students. On the surface, the content from courses …

Economics Of Integrating Push-Pull Technology In Maize-Dairy Farming Systems In Eastern Uganda, Ruth Chepchirchir Jan 2018

Economics Of Integrating Push-Pull Technology In Maize-Dairy Farming Systems In Eastern Uganda, Ruth Chepchirchir

All PhD Dissertations

Cereals particularly maize, are the most essential food and cash crops for majority of smallholder households in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In maize production, small-sized producers are confronted with different constraints including stemborers, Striga and degraded soil leading to poor crop yields. In response to these challenges, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) and collaborators came up with a habitat management approach; the Push-pull Technology (PPT) for simultaneous restrain of the three key constraints. Despite high adoption of PPT in East Africa, its impact has not been fully understood in the region. This study characterizes farming systems and …
