Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans) Horizontal Movements In The Western South Atlantic, Eduardo W. Wanick Nov 2018

Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans) Horizontal Movements In The Western South Atlantic, Eduardo W. Wanick

HCNSO Student Capstones

Blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) have been documented to undertake long – and sometimes transoceanic – migrations, according to electronic pop-up satellite archival tag (PSAT) data obtained primarily in the western North Atlantic, with additional reported deployments from selected locations in the Pacific. Information on the movements of blue marlin in the South Atlantic, however, is lacking, despite evidence of spawning aggregations off the coast of Brazil during the Southern Hemisphere’s late spring and summer. Additionally, there are no reported long-term PSAT tag deployments on blue marlin in the western South Atlantic. Therefore, their movements in that large area …

The Roles Of Primary Cilia In Cardiovascular Diseases, Rajasekharreddy Pala, Maha Jamal, Qamar Alshammari, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Primary cilia are microtubule-based organelles found in most mammalian cell types. Cilia act as sensory organelles that transmit extracellular clues into intracellular signals for molecular and cellular responses. Biochemical and molecular defects in primary cilia are associated with a wide range of diseases, termed ciliopathies, with phenotypes ranging from polycystic kidney disease, liver disorders, mental retardation, and obesity to cardiovascular diseases. Primary cilia in vascular endothelia protrude into the lumen of blood vessels and function as molecular switches for calcium (Ca2+) and nitric oxide (NO) signaling. As mechanosensory organelles, endothelial cilia are involved in blood flow sensing. Dysfunction in endothelial …

The Contribution Of The Descending Pain Modulatory Pathway In Opioid Tolerance, Lindsay M. Lueptow, Amanda K. Fakira, Erin N. Bobeck

Biology Faculty Publications

Opioids remain among the most effective pain-relieving therapeutics. However, their long-term use is limited due to the development of tolerance and potential for addiction. For many years, researchers have explored the underlying mechanisms that lead to this decreased effectiveness of opioids after repeated use, and numerous theories have been proposed to explain these changes. The most widely studied theories involve alterations in receptor trafficking and intracellular signaling. Other possible mechanisms include the recruitment of new structural neuronal and microglia networks. While many of these theories have been developed using molecular and cellular techniques, more recent behavioral data also supports these …

Background

Cardiovascular risk factor burden in the absence of clinical or radiological “events” is associated with mild cognitive impairment. Magnetic resonance imaging techniques exploring the integrity of neuronal fiber connectivity within white matter networks supporting cognitive processing could be used to measure the impact of cardiovascular disease on brain health and be used beyond bedside neuropsychological tests to detect subclinical changes and select or stratify participants for entry into clinical trials.

Methods and Results

We assessed the relationship between verbal IQ and brain network integrity and the effect of cardiovascular risk factors on network integrity by constructing whole‐brain structural connectomes …

Degraded Visual Environment Tracker, Mohammed Eid Abu Hussein Nov 2018

Degraded Visual Environment Tracker, Mohammed Eid Abu Hussein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Compressive Sensing (CS) has proven its ability to reduce the number of measurements required to reproduce images with similar quality to those reconstructed by observing the Shannon-Nyquest sampling criteria. By exploiting spatial redundancies, it was shown that CS can be used to denoise and enhance image quality. In this thesis we propose a method that incorporates an efficient use of CS to locate a specific object in zero-visibility environments. This method was developed after multiple implementations of dictionary learning, reconstruction, detection, and tracking algorithms in order to identify the shortcomings of existing techniques and enhance our results. We show that …

Building Eden, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Ralph Deigh is the most famous vernacular American architect you've never heard of. After a military career spanning two wars and struggles with homelessness and PTSD, he is invited to design an entirely new rural community for the 21st century. Twin disasters (fire and flood) in Dare County, West Virginia, set up the circumstances for him to join with Rosemary Mueller and the wealthy Ohio-based Mueller Foundation and a mysterious group of local Dare County residents led by Adam Sennett, County Clerk of Dare County. Together, they design and build the new town of Eden, West Virginia.

The whole story …

An Electron‐Rich Calix[4]Arene‐Based Receptor With Unprecedented Binding Affinity For Nitric Oxide, Denan Wang, Lena V. Ivanova, Maxim V. Ivanov, Saber Mirzaei, Qadir K. Timerghazin, Scott A. Reid, Rajendra Rathore

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Calixarenes have found widespread application as building blocks for the design and synthesis of functional materials in host–guest chemistry. The ongoing desire to develop a detailed understanding of the nature of NO bonding to multichromophoric π‐stacked assemblies led us to develop an electron‐rich methoxy derivative of calix[4]arene (3), which we show exists as a single conformer in solution at ambient temperature. Here, we examine the redox properties of this derivative, generate its cation radical (3+.) using robust chemical oxidants, and determine the relative efficacy of its NO binding in comparison with model calixarenes. We find …

On Booms That Never Bust: Ambiguity In Experimental Asset Markets With Bubbles, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hernán-González, Praveen Kujal

ESI Working Papers

We study the effect of ambiguity on the formation of bubbles and on the occurrence of crashes in experimental asset markets à la Smith, Suchanek, and Williams (1988). We extend their framework to an environment where the fundamental value of the asset is ambiguous. We show that, when the fundamental value is ambiguous, asset prices tend to be lower than when it is risky although bubbles form in both the ambiguous and the risky environments. Additionally, bubbles do not crash in the ambiguous case whereas they do so in the risky one. These findings regarding depressed prices and the absence …

Using Mixed Reality Displays For Observational Learning Of Motor Skills: A Design Research Approach Enhancing Memory Recall And Usability, Pwl Watson, D Livingstone

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

When learning an action sequence, observing a demonstration informs the knowledge of movement execution and enhances the efficiency of motor skill acquisition. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual learning environments offer more opportunities for motor skill training as they afford observational learning. Mixed reality platforms (virtual reality, desktop PC, etc.) that render 3D virtual environments can therefore increase accessibility of observational content. To explore the effectiveness of these platforms so as to facilitate observational learning of action sequences, we developed the Recovery Position Application [1] (RPA) at the Interactive System Studio, University of Plymouth. The RPA was originally designed for mobile virtual reality. …

Measuring And Understanding Social-Emotional Behaviors In Preschoolers From Rural Pakistan, Jenna E. Finch, Aisha Khizar Yousafzai, Muneera Rasheed, Jelena Obradović

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is widely-used to measure symptoms of common childhood behavioral problems that may lead to mental health difficulties. In a sample of 1,302 highly-disadvantaged mothers and their preschoolers, we evaluated the factor structure and reliability of the parent-report version of the SDQ in rural Pakistan. Confirmatory factor analyses suggested that the original structure of the SDQ was not appropriate for our data. We created conceptually- and empirically-coherent measures of children’s externalizing behavior problems and prosocial skills. Child and family correlates of social-emotional behaviors were similar to those found in other countries, supporting the validity of …
