Pelvic Ring Emergency Stabilization System (Press), Christina Salas, Thomas R. Howdieshell, Rachel Tufaro, Lauren Long, Ava K. Mauser, Aneesha Kondapi, Sherif H. Aboubakr

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Pelvic ring fractures can be lethal owing to the potential for hemodynamic instability or arterial hemorrhage when the pelvic volume is increased. Pelvic binders are the standard of care used to provide circumferential compression to the pelvis, reducing the volume and increasing the intra-pelvic pressure. While commercially available options have been shown to provide adequate stability to the unstable pelvis, the circumferential nature of the binders limits access to the abdomen and groin regions, where accessibility is often necessary during the course of emergency treatment. We introduce a new technology known as the Pelvic Ring Emergency Stabilization System (PRESS). The …

Bacterial Communities On The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Continental Shelf Are Influenced By Sediment Characteristics Affected By The Mississippi River, Priya Bhattacharya, Stephen C. Landers, Joong-Wook Park

Gulf of Mexico Science

Benthic bacteria in the Gulf of Mexico serve the base of the sediment food chain as a food source for various marine organisms. In this paper, we analyzed the bacterial community and sediment characteristics from 14 sediment samples collected along the continental shelf of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Using the bacterial community to assess relationships among our sites, the data revealed groupings of sites that correlated to the sediment characteristics, generally grouped as western sites in Louisiana near the outflow of the Mississippi River and eastern Florida sites more distant from the outflow. Cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling demonstrated …

Patterns Of Maturity, Seasonal Migration, And Spawning Of Atlantic Croaker In The Western Gulf Of Mexico, Joel Anderson, Dusty Mcdonald, Britt Bumguardner, Zachary Olsen, Jason W. Ferguson

Gulf of Mexico Science

Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) are one of the more common finfishes in the Gulf of Mexico. They are a significant component of Gulf bait fisheries and an important midtrophic component of nearshore food webs. In this study, life-history parameters associated with growth, maturity, and seasonal migration were estimated for Atlantic croaker in Texas and integrated into previously described data throughout the rest of the species range. The major findings of this work were the following: (1) a majority (>76%) of age-1 female Atlantic croaker were sexually mature; (2) egress of adults from inshore habitats took place in …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Marsh Restoration Via Terracing By Comparing Vegetation Density And Nekton Abundance Before And After Restoration, Jacob B. Loveless, Delbert Lee Smee Jan 2018

Assessing The Efficacy Of Marsh Restoration Via Terracing By Comparing Vegetation Density And Nekton Abundance Before And After Restoration, Jacob B. Loveless, Delbert Lee Smee

Gulf of Mexico Science

Nueces Bay, a Texas estuary, has been heavily affected by human activities including habitat destruction, pollution, and restriction of freshwater input, leading to a loss of nearly all structured habitats in the bay. To create additional habitat and recover some lost ecosystem services, 160 acres of salt-marsh habitat were created in Nueces Bay in 2010 using marsh terracing. Mounds of marine sediment, or terraces, suitable for growth of Spartina alterniflora, an important foundation species in marshes, were constructed. Several volunteer events involving planting of S. alterniflora occurred in 2011, 2012, and 2013, allowing S. alterniflora to become established. The …

The Impact Of Trauma: How Do We Present Jesus To Those So Fractured?, Ingrid Slikkers, Orelia Daye Jan 2018

The Impact Of Trauma: How Do We Present Jesus To Those So Fractured?, Ingrid Slikkers, Orelia Daye

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"Jesus uses sensory metaphors when he asks that Christians be a light to the world and not hidden, much like a flame. Trauma expert Bruce Perry states, “Fire can warm or consume, water can quench or drown, wind can caress or cut, and so it is with human relationships: we can both create and destroy, nurture and terrorize, traumatize and heal each other” (Szalavitz and Perry, 2007:16). He further supports the role of human connections by stating, “Surprisingly, it is often when wandering through the emotional carnage left by the worst of humankind that we find the best of humanity …

Cellulose synthases (CESAs) are glycosyltransferases that catalyze formation of cellulose microfibrils in plant cell walls. Seed plant CESA isoforms cluster in six phylogenetic clades, whose non‐interchangeable members play distinct roles within cellulose synthesis complexes (CSCs). A ‘class specific region’ (CSR), with higher sequence similarity within versus between functional CESA classes, has been suggested to contribute to specific activities or interactions of different isoforms. We investigated CESA isoform specificity in the moss, Physcomitrella patens (Hedw.) B. S. G. to gain evolutionary insights into CESA structure/function relationships. Like seed plants, P. patens has oligomeric rosette‐type CSCs, but the PpCESAs diverged independently and …

On microevolutionary timescales, adaptive evolution depends upon both natural selection and the underlying genetic architecture of traits under selection, which may constrain evolutionary outcomes. Whether such genetic constraints shape phenotypic diversity over macroevolutionary timescales is more controversial, however. One key prediction is that genetic constraints should bias the early stages of species divergence along “genetic lines of least resistance” defined by the genetic (co)variance matrix, G. This bias is expected to erode over time as species means and G matrices diverge, allowing phenotypes to evolve away from the major axis of variation. We tested for evidence of this signal in …

"Canada Is My Home. It Is All I'Ve Ever Known": The Impact Of Bill C-43 On Permanent Resident In Canada, Erica Subramaniam Jan 2018

"Canada Is My Home. It Is All I'Ve Ever Known": The Impact Of Bill C-43 On Permanent Resident In Canada, Erica Subramaniam

Social Justice and Community Engagement

This paper examines the impact of Bill C-43, “The Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act,” on permanent residents (PRs) who immigrated to Canada as a youth and have come to regard Canada as their “home” despite their precarious migration status. Through qualitative research methods, data on the experiences of PRs and their understandings of “home,” “place,” belonging and consciousness was collected through interviews. Jay and Trevor’s stories are presented through a case study research design, highlighting their complex identities and experiences while also examining how the risk of deportation under Bill C-43 can strip them from all they …

Modulation Of The Navigational Strategy Of Insects In Controlled Temperature Environments, Joseph Shomar, Anggie Ferrer, Josh Forer, Tom Zhang, Mason Klein Jan 2018

Modulation Of The Navigational Strategy Of Insects In Controlled Temperature Environments, Joseph Shomar, Anggie Ferrer, Josh Forer, Tom Zhang, Mason Klein

2018 Entries

With its small size and limited motor tool set, the Drosophila larva is a good system to study how animals alter specific elements of their behavior to search and reach optimal environmental conditions. We aim to understand the larva’s response to temperature across development, in sensory gradients, and to distinguish behavioral modulations based on physical changes from those due to sensory input. PID-controlled instruments drive temporal or spatial temperature gradients; combined with a moat system to replenish gels at high temperature, we can explore the larva’s full behavioral profile. Many larvae are simultaneously observed during free navigation in three different …

Exploring Evolutionary Medicine Through 19Th Century Medical Collections: Applications In Archival Studies, Taylor Sturgill

Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab Student Research

Evolution has been a paradox in the field of science, but, the study of evolutionary medicine applies both the evolutionary game theory and medicine. This study was conducted to explore evolution by analyzing two 19th century collections of medical formulations and prescriptions while compared to the trend of public health and pathogenic mechanisms. Analysis of organic structure in historical prescriptions, descriptive epidemiology in Kentucky, and the idea of the germ theory will be used explicitly to show the evolutionary change of health and disease. Results of this study provided an outlook on ingredients that stimulate the body as a whole …

Effects Of Environmental Conditions On C-Fos Expression In Rat Nucleus Accumbens After Remifentanil, Usman Z. Hamid, Rebecca S. Hofford, Michael T. Bardo Jan 2018

Effects Of Environmental Conditions On C-Fos Expression In Rat Nucleus Accumbens After Remifentanil, Usman Z. Hamid, Rebecca S. Hofford, Michael T. Bardo

Oswald Research and Creativity Competition

Previous studies have shown that adolescents raised in impoverished conditions are more likely to develop drug abuse in adulthood. In addition, both stress-inducing living conditions (impoverishment/isolation) and drugs of abuse may lead to an increase in the c-fos transcription factor in the reward circuit of the brain, particularly in the nucleus accumbens. The aim of the current study was to quantify the number of c-fos positive cells in the nucleus accumbens of enriched and isolated rats exposed to the opioid remifentanil. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were raised in either enriched or isolated conditions for one month, after which they received …
