A Preservative-Free Emergent Trap For The Isotopic And Elemental Analysis Of Emergent Insects From A Wetland System, Richard A. Mackenzie, Jerry L. Kaster
The Great Lakes Entomologist
This study reports a cost-effective, live emergent trap designed for the preservative-free use in both biogeochemical and ecological analyses of emerging insects. The trap proved to be advantageous in several ways. First, the simple design made the trap time-efficient since it was easy to set-up, change, and maintain. Second, live sampling not only provided uncontaminated organisms for elemental and stable isotopic analyses, it minimized disfigurement. This resulted in rapid and easy handling, as well as identification, of adult insects. Finally, trap avoidance by ephemeropterans and odonates, a common problem encountered in the literature, was minimal and organisms from both insect …

Attraction Of Apple Maggot Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) To Synthetic Fruit Volatile Compounds And Food Attractants In Michigan Apple Orchards, Lukasz L. Stenliski, Ocar E. Liburd
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), is a serious pest of apples in the United States, requiring reliable monitoring and control programs. Various synthetic apple volatile lures with and without protein hydrolysate, ammonium acetate, or ammonium carbonate were evaluated from 1998-2000 for their attractiveness to R. pomonella adults with red sticky-sphere (9 cm diam.) monitoring traps. A blend consisting of butyl butanoate (10%), propyl hexano- ate (4%), butyl hexanoate (37%), hexyl butanoate (44%), and pentyl hexanoate (5%) was the most effective lure tested for attracting both sexes of R. pomonella adults during all three field seasons. The addition of protein …

First Record Of Rhipiceridae (Coleoptera: Polyphaga: Dascilloidea) From Wisconsin, Daniel K. Young, Kerry Katovich
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The Cedar beetle family, Rhipiceridae, is recorded from Wisconsin for the first time. A single adult female of Sandalus niger was collected on a walkway along a forested path in south-central Wisconsin on 7 October 2000. This discovery represents not only the first record of Rhipiceridae from Wisconsin, but also the first record of the entire superfamily Dascilloidea, a relatively basal lineage of Elateriformia.

Ant-Plant Relationships In A Re-Created Tallgrass Prairie, Chris E. Petersen, Dhvani G. Dave, Charise L. Parker, Renee E. Petersen
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Relationships between the distributions of nesting ants and flora were investigated in a re-created tallgrass prairie located in northeastern Illinois. One-third of 167 randomly selected 1m2 quadrats in the prairie contained ant nests. Basal coverage of ground by tall grass shoots was greater in quadrats having ant nests than in those lacking ant nests. In addition, clumps of big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) that were inhabited by the ant, Acanthomyops clavigera, had higher median rank densities than adjacent clumps lacking nests. The clumps also showed a negative correlation between big bluestem shoots/ cm2 and area occupied by the clump at …

Size Estimate Of A Local Population Of Brychius Hungerfordi (Coleoptera: Haliplidae), Michael Grant, Brian Scholtens, Robert Vande Kopple, Bert Ebbers
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Much of the natural history of the endangered crawling water beetle, Brychius hungerfordi, is unknown. Population estimates have only been surmised. We have measured, using a mark and recapture technique, a localize population of the beetle in a pool on the East Branch of the Maple River, Emmet County, Michigan. The average population during July 2001 was found to be 1052 individuals with a range of 43 (highest estimate – lowest estimate). A three-year study of the relative abundance of the beetle in the same pool suggests that the population has remained relatively constant.

Development Of One’S Teaching Philosophy: The Three “R’S” Of Relationships, Relevancy, And Rigor, Mary Bowne
Empowering Research for Educators
A common practice for educators is to develop a teaching philosophy which helps them become reflective practitioners on various teaching and learning strategies. This narrative will address how one faculty member identified common themes within her online and face-to-face classes that held students accountable, yet eager to come to class and learn the important content and develop the unique traits mentioned. Through the use of various data methods and current literature and research available, the author identified three common themes within her teaching and classroom environment. Those themes are identified as the 3 “R’s”: Relationships, Relevancy, and Rigor.

To take advantage of recent advances in genomics and proteomics it is critical that the three-dimensional physical structure of biological macromolecules be determined. Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) is a promising and improving method for obtaining this data, however resolution is often not sufficient to directly determine the atomic scale structure. Despite this, information for secondary structure locations is detectable. De novo modeling is a computational approach to modeling these macromolecular structures based on cryo-EM derived data. During de novo modeling a mapping between detected secondary structures and the underlying amino acid sequence must be identified. DP-TOSS (Dynamic Programming for determining the …

We live in a world where awareness of ethnic and cultural diversity is an ever increasing reality. Business and education turn to the social sciences to inform them about how to manage and optimize cross-cultural interactions. Although much research has been done on the impact of cross-cultural interactions on a wide range of variables, one less researched area is the endocrine response to cross-cultural interactions. In this study we set out to investigate the endocrine response to cross cultural interactions and the impact of these interactions on perceived differences. To do so we measured the pre and post levels of …

Analysis Of Gene Expression In Filamentous Cells Of Candida Albicans Grown On Agar Plates, Paul E. Creger, Jill R. Blankenship
Biology Faculty Publications
Candida albicans (C. albicans) is a commensal organism of the human gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. C. albicans is also a major human pathogen, causing disease ranging from cutaneous infections to lethal systemic disease. The ability of this fungus to switch between yeast and filamentous forms of growth has long been linked to its pathogenesis. Filamentation can be induced by a variety of distinct environmental cues and can occur in either liquid or solid media. While some evidence suggests that there are differences between filamentation in solid and liquid media, gene expression analysis of filamentation in C. albicans has focused strictly …

Growth Performance, Organ-Level Ionic Relations And Organic Osmoregulation Of Elaeagnus Angustifolia In Response To Salt Stress, Zhengxiang Liu, Jiangfeng Zhu, Xiuyan Yang, Haiwen Wu, Qi Wei, Hairong Wei, Huaxin Zhang
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Elaeagnus angustifolia is one of the most extensively afforested tree species in environment-harsh regions of northern China. Despite its exceptional tolerance to saline soil, the intrinsic adaptive physiology has not been revealed. In this study, we investigated the growth, organ-level ionic relations and organic osmoregulation of the seedlings hydroponically treated with 0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl for 30 days. We found that the growth characteristics and the whole-plant dry weight were not obviously stunted, but instead, were even slightly stimulated by the treatment of 100 mM NaCl. In contrast, these traits were significantly inhibited by 200 mM NaCl treatment. …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Patient-centred attitudes have been shown to decline during medical training in high-income countries, yet little is known about attitudes among West African medical students. We sought to measure student attitudes towards patient-centredness and examine validity of the 18-item Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS) in this context.
PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: 430 medical students in years 1, 3, 5 and 6 of a 6-year medical training programme in Bamako, Mali.
DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional survey, compared the proportion of students who agreed with each PPOS item by gender and academic year, and calculated composite PPOS scores. To examine psychometrics of the PPOS and …

Creb-Binding Protein Plays Key Roles In Juvenile Hormone Action In The Red Flour Beetle, Tribolium Castaneum, Jingjing Xu, Amit Roy, Subba Reddy Palli
Entomology Faculty Publications
Juvenile hormones (JH) and ecdysteroids regulate many biological and metabolic processes. CREB-binding protein (CBP) is a transcriptional co-regulator with histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity. Therefore, CBP is involved in activation of many transcription factors that regulate expression of genes associated with postembryonic development in insects. However, the function of CBP in JH action in insects is not well understood. Hence, we studied the role of CBP in JH action in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum and the Tribolium cell line. CBP knockdown caused a decrease in JH induction of genes, Kr-h1, 4EBP and G13402 in T. castaneum larvae, adults and …

Male Competition And Speciation: Expanding Our Framework For Speciation By Sexual Selection, Alycia C R Lackey, Michael D. Martin, R. M. Tinghitella
Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
Sexual selection is a powerful source of rapid evolutionary change, and there is a long-standing hypothesis that it can cause reproductive isolation. However, our understanding of speciation by sexual selection is largely limited to mechanisms by which sexual selection via female mate choice can drive divergence (i.e., when male mating signals and female preferences for those signals diversify; Panhuis et al. 2001; Maan and Seehausen 2011). Male competition for mates—Darwin’s second mechanism of sexual selection—can also favor rapid and dramatic phenotypic and genotypic changes, yet it has been all but overlooked in speciation research (Darwin 1859, …

The Look Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Middle School Statistics, Dhimitraq Duni
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I attempt to examine the nature of pedagogical content knowledge (Shulman, 1986) that teachers exhibit while observing computer-animated animations that bring up pedagogical issues in the classroom. In-service teachers were asked to view different animations and react to different prompts about the animations. Later, teachers were interviewed to prompt more discussion of pedagogical issues with the intention of clarifying their stance and their knowledge of pedagogy. The computer animations were utilized as a surrogate for classroom teaching, highlighting issues that could be otherwise overlooked during live teaching observation.
Using Photovoice With Adults With Developmental Disabilities To Measure Camp Goals, Haley Alexandra Allmond
Using Photovoice With Adults With Developmental Disabilities To Measure Camp Goals, Haley Alexandra Allmond
Honors College Theses
This project addressed the perspectives of adults with developmental disabilities in a residential camp setting, with a particular focus on health beliefs. It involved 15 participants with a range of diagnoses in participatory action research using Photovoice, which is a technique that allows marginalized groups the ability to voice specific needs through photography. For the purposes of this project, subjects took photos and examined evidence of healthy living skills learned during the camp experience. After analyzing data collected, the researcher identified four separate definitions of health discussed by participants. Study findings suggest that the residential camp experience has a positive …
Specific Relationship Between The Shape Of The Readiness Potential, Subjective Decision Time, And Waiting Time Predicted By An Accumulator Model With Temporally Autocorrelated Input Noise, Aaron Schurger
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Self-initiated movements are reliably preceded by a gradual buildup of neuronal activity known as the readiness potential (RP). Recent evidence suggests that the RP may reflect subthreshold stochastic fluctuations in neural activity that can be modeled as a process of accumulation to bound. One element of accumulator models that has been largely overlooked in the literature is the stochastic term, which is traditionally modeled as Gaussian white noise. While there may be practical reasons for this choice, we have long known that noise in neural systems is not white – it is long-term correlated with spectral density of the form …

Predicting The Nitrogen Fertilizer Response Of Turfgrass Based On Solvita® Soil Test Results, David Moore
Master's Theses
Nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendations are very difficult to make for turfgrass because N is transient in the soil and because the N mineralization potential of soil can be difficult to predict. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between turfgrass performance and Solvita® Labile Amino N (SLAN) and Soil CO2-Burst (SSCB) tests. Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) turf plots received 23 rates of organic fertilizer and 4 rates of urea, and were evaluated separately for five measures of turfgrass performance: total foliar N, normalized difference vegetation index, chlorophyll …
