Favorable Response Of Advanced Superior Sulcus Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma To Gefitinib For 11 Years Complicated By Interval Development Of Small Cell Carcinoma Of The Lung., Mark H. Cooper
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Gefitinib is a medication that was originally developed as an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) blocker. It has been used to treat non-small cell lung cancer with varying success. We describe a patient who presented with Pancoasts syndrome and after being deemed surgically unresectable had limited success with chemotherapy and radiation but had an excellent response to the medication Gefitinib. The patient was disease free for several years and after 11 years of follow up with CT scans, a PET CT showed an isolated area of FDG avidity which on biopsy was small cell carcinoma of the lung. The patient …

What Is Appealing?: Sex And Racial Differences In Perceptions Of The Physical Attractiveness Of Women, Rachel Sewell
What Is Appealing?: Sex And Racial Differences In Perceptions Of The Physical Attractiveness Of Women, Rachel Sewell
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Beauty and physical appearance are considered to be of great importance in today's society. In the U.S., many strive for physical perfection, and much attention is focused on the way one looks. A beauty ideal has been created over time through the combination of several elements within American culture, and this ideal image attempts to define female beauty as fitting into a certain mold. Certain characteristics have been deemed the most attractive when it comes to female physical attractiveness, and a model of beauty has been presented by the media. This research focuses on whether everyone buys into that ideal. …
Understanding Older Women's Experience Of Being Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Molly Wilhelm
Understanding Older Women's Experience Of Being Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Molly Wilhelm
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
This study describes the experience of being diagnosed with early stage breast cancer for women age 65 and older. This qualitative study used content analysis to analyze twenty interviews of older women with early stage breast cancer. A variety of positive and negative factors influence the experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer. These factors include: their initial reactions, interactions with their respective medical teams, family support, religion, education, and misinformation. Nurses can use the information from this study to help make diagnosis more positive by educating older women about breast cancer and treatment, encouraging them to develop an optimistic …
Early Adolescent Latinas And Non-Coital Sexual Behavior: Individual, Social, And Parental Variables, Ellita Williams
Early Adolescent Latinas And Non-Coital Sexual Behavior: Individual, Social, And Parental Variables, Ellita Williams
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STI) are increasing at a faster rate among young, low income Latinas as compared to other low income groups of girls. However, little is known about the non-coital behavior that early adolescent girls may engage in, which puts them at risk for initiation of intercourse. This study examines the frequency of a particular non-coital behavior, being touched below the waist on top of clothes, and investigates how girls who engage in this behavior differ from those who do not with respect to individual (biologic and cognitive), social (peer norms and acculturation), and parental (single …

The Backward Masking Red Light Effect And Schizotypy: The Influence Of Sex, Diana C. Hernandez, Andrea Y. Ranieri
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Previous research has shown a unique effect of red light on visual processing related to both schizophrenia and positive schizotypy. The current study examines whether this effect is influenced by sex in a more broadly-defined schizotypy sample. A location backward masking (BM) task with three color background conditions (red, green, and gray) was administered to 34 undergraduate students (59% female) with a high score on the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and 39 students (51% female) with a low score. Results revealed that the group by color interaction was significant for the male participants, while it did not approach significance in …
Analysis Of The Repair Of Topoisomerase Ii Dna Damage, Eric Goldstein
Analysis Of The Repair Of Topoisomerase Ii Dna Damage, Eric Goldstein
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
A large number of anti-cancer chemotherapeutics target DNA topoisomerases. Etoposide is a specific topoisomerase II poison that causes reversible double strand DNA breaks. This project analyses the repair of DNA damage induced by etoposide, a common anti-cancer chemotherapeutic. Through the comparison of two known DNA repair pathways, anti-cancer chemotherapy may become more cytotoxic. Double strand DNA break repair is mediated by either non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) or homologous recombination (HR). NHEJ repairs through direct ligation of a double stranded break, whereas HR utilizes a homologous template to recover the wild type sequence. Reporter cassettes involving the expression of green fluorescent …

Etiology Of Community Acquired Clostridium Difficile-Associated Disease, Shannan Sherman, Dr. Pamela Ark
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
A review of literature related to community acquired Clostridium difficile -associated disease (CA-CDAD) was conducted. Nine relevant studies were identified using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) and MEDLINE-EBSCOhost databases. Clinical practice recommendations were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The studies provided information about epidemiology of infection due to C. difficile in the community and interventions to reduce transmission. Multiple studies found underlying gastrointestinal disorders and use of cephalosporin antibiotics to be a risk factor. Another risk factor was administration of gastric acid suppressive drugs. No particular C. difficile strain was more likely …
Cold Temperature Effects On Byssal Thread Production By The Native Mussel Geukensia Demissa Versus The Non-Native Mussel Mytella Charruana, Sasha Brodsky
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Mytella charruana is a Central/South American mussel that has been found as an introduced species along the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States since 2004. Previous experiments have determined the lethal thermal minimum of M. charruana to be between 6-9° C. Continuous byssal thread production is essential for mussel survival as it is used for attachment to substrates in natural environments, but may decrease when environmental conditions deviate from their optimum. We sought to determine whether M. charruana exhibits a non-lethal, thermal response involving a reduction in byssal thread production. Mytella charruana and, for comparison, a native mussel species, …
Characterization Of Cytokeratin 8 In Cancer, Daniel S. Leventhal
Characterization Of Cytokeratin 8 In Cancer, Daniel S. Leventhal
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
A Cytokeratin 8 (K8)/Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) fusion construct was created to better understand the behavior of K8 within cancer cells. This intermediate filament (IF) protein is a member of the cytoskeletal gene family, along with actin and tubulin. IFs are normally expressed in a tissue-specific and differentiation-dependent manner, in which their role is more supportive than essential to the cell. Such roles include rigidity of cellular shape, protein trafficking, cellular locomotion, and cell-signaling platforms. K8 mutation, over-expression, and aberrant post translational modifications have been observed in various carcinoma cell lines to be the cause of several phenotypes, including apoptosis …

Optimized Adaptive Enrichment Designs For Multi-Arm Trials: Learning Which Subpopulations Benefit From Different Treatments, Jon Arni Steingrimsson, Joshua Betz, Tiachen Qian, Michael Rosenblum
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
We consider the problem of designing a randomized trial for comparing two treatments versus a common control in two disjoint subpopulations. The subpopulations could be defined in terms of a biomarker or disease severity measured at baseline. The goal is to determine which treatments benefit which subpopulations. We develop a new class of adaptive enrichment designs tailored to solving this problem. Adaptive enrichment designs involve a preplanned rule for modifying enrollment based on accruing data in an ongoing trial. The proposed designs have preplanned rules for stopping accrual of treatment by subpopulation combinations, either for efficacy or futility. The motivation …

Nitrogen Fertilization Elevated Spatial Heterogeneity Of Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon And Nitrogen In Switchgrass And Gamagrass Croplands, Jianwei Li, Chunlan Guo, Siyang Jian, Qi Deng, Chih-Li Yu, Kudjo E. Dzantor, Dafeng Hui
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
The effects of intensive nitrogen (N) fertilizations on spatial distributions of soil microbes in bioenergy croplands remain unknown. To quantify N fertilization effect on spatial heterogeneity of soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and N (MBN), we sampled top mineral horizon soils (0-15 cm) using a spatially explicit design within two 15-m2 plots under three fertilization treatments in two bioenergy croplands in a three-year long fertilization experiment in Middle Tennessee, USA. The three fertilization treatments were no N input (NN), low N input (LN: 84 kg N ha−1 in urea) and high N input (HN: 168 kg N ha−1 in urea). …

Gene-Based Association Study For Lipid Traits In Diverse Cohorts Implicates Bace1 And Sidt2 Regulation In Triglyceride Levels, Angela Andaleon, Lauren S. Mogil, Heather Wheeler
Bioinformatics Faculty Publications
Plasma lipid levels are risk factors for cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death worldwide. While many studies have been conducted on lipid genetics, they mainly focus on Europeans and thus their transferability to diverse populations is unclear. We performed SNP- and gene-level genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of four lipid traits in cohorts from Nigeria and the Philippines and compared them to the results of larger, predominantly European meta-analyses. Two previously implicated loci met genome-wide significance in our SNP-level GWAS in the Nigerian cohort, rs34065661 in CETP associated with HDL cholesterol (P = 9.0 × 10−10) and …

Coagulation factor XII (FXII) deficiency is associated with decreased neutrophil migration, but the mechanisms remain uncharacterized. Here, we examine how FXII contributes to the inflammatory response. In 2 models of sterile inflammation, FXII-deficient mice (F12–/–) had fewer neutrophils recruited than WT mice. We discovered that neutrophils produced a pool of FXII that is functionally distinct from hepatic-derived FXII and contributes to neutrophil trafficking at sites of inflammation. FXII signals in neutrophils through urokinase plasminogen activator receptor–mediated (uPAR-mediated) Akt2 phosphorylation at S474 (pAktS474). Downstream of pAkt2S474, FXII stimulation of neutrophils upregulated surface expression of αMβ2 integrin, increased intracellular calcium, and promoted …
Comprehensive Plan For Prevention Of Abuse And Neglect Of People With Disabilities: Report, Nancy M. Fitzsimons
Comprehensive Plan For Prevention Of Abuse And Neglect Of People With Disabilities: Report, Nancy M. Fitzsimons
Social Work Department Publications
Victimization of people with disabilities (here forward ‘abuse and neglect’) is a serious, persistent, and pervasive problem. While Minnesota is taking steps to improve its reporting and response systems, similar efforts have not been made to prevent abuse and neglect. This Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect of People with Disabilities contains powerful examples of the problem and describes potential remedial actions. But the Plan goes further, by outlining promising actions that can be taken before the abuse and neglect occurs.
This report and the subsequent work on prevention of abuse and neglect for people with disabilities …

Rewired Rnai-Mediated Genome Surveillance In House Dust Mites, Mosharrof H. Mondal, Pavel Klimov, Alex S. Flynt
Faculty Publications
House dust mites are common pests with an unusual evolutionary history, being descendants of a parasitic ancestor. Transition to parasitism is frequently accompanied by genome rearrangements, possibly to accommodate the genetic change needed to access new ecology. Transposable element (TE) activity is a source of genomic instability that can trigger large-scale genomic alterations. Eukaryotes have multiple transposon control mechanisms, one of which is RNA interference (RNAi). Investigation of the dust mite genome failed to identify a major RNAi pathway: the Piwi-associated RNA (piRNA) pathway, which has been replaced by a novel small-interfering RNA (siRNA)-like pathway. Co-opting of piRNA function by …
