BACKGROUND—1,3,4-Oxadiazole and imidazolidine rings are important heterocyclic compounds exhibiting a variety of biological activities. In this study, novel compounds with oxadiazole and imidazolidine rings were synthesized from 3-(methylsulfonyl)-2- oxoimidazolidine-1-carbonyl chloride and screened for insecticidal activities. The proposed structures of the 17 synthesized compounds were confirmed using elemental analysis, infrared (IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), and mass spectroscopy. RESULTS—None of the compounds showed larvicidal activity at the tested concentrations against first-instar Aedes aegypti larvae. However, nine compounds exhibited promising adulticidal activity, with mortality rates of ≥80% at 5 μg per mosquito. Further dose–response bioassays were undertaken to determine median lethal …
Changes Of Lumbar Posture And Tissue Loading During Static Trunk Bending, Faisal Alessa, Xiaopeng Ning
Changes Of Lumbar Posture And Tissue Loading During Static Trunk Bending, Faisal Alessa, Xiaopeng Ning
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Static trunk bending is an occupational risk factor for lower back pain (LBP). When assessing relative short duration trunk bending tasks, existing studies mostly assumed unchanged spine biomechanical responses during task performance. The purpose of the current study was to assess the biomechanical changes of lumbar spine during the performance of relatively short duration, sustained trunk bending tasks. Fifteen participants performed 40-s static trunk bending tasks in two different trunk angles (30° or 60°) with two different hand load levels (0 or 6.8 kg). Results of the current study revealed significantly increased lumbar flexion and lumbar passive moment during the …

Regulator Of G Protein Signaling-12 Modulates The Dopamine Transporter In Ventral Striatum And Locomotor Responses To Psychostimulants, Joshua D. Gross, Shane W. Kaski, Adam B. Schroer, Kimberley A. Wix, David P. Siderovski, Vincent Setola
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
Regulators of G protein signaling are proteins that accelerate the termination of effector stimulation after G protein-coupled receptor activation. Many regulators of G protein signaling proteins are highly expressed in the brain and therefore considered potential drug discovery targets for central nervous system pathologies; for example, here we show that RGS12 is highly expressed in microdissected mouse ventral striatum. Given a role for the ventral striatum in psychostimulant-induced locomotor activity, we tested whether Rgs12 genetic ablation affected behavioral responses to amphetamine and cocaine. RGS12 loss significantly decreased hyperlocomotion to lower doses of both amphetamine and cocaine; however, other outcomes of …

Plant traits are both responsive to local climate and strong predictors of primary productivity. We hypothesized that future climate change might promote a shift in global plant traits resulting in changes in Gross Primary Productivity (GPP). We characterized the relationship between key plant traits, namely Specific Leaf Area (SLA), height, and seed mass, and local climate and primary productivity. We found that by 2070, tropical and arid ecosystems will be more suitable for plants with relatively lower canopy height, SLA and seed mass, while far northern latitudes will favor woody and taller plants than at present. Using a network of …

Partitioning Of Adipose Lipid Metabolism By Altered Expression And Function Of Ppar Isoforms After Bariatric Surgery, C Jahansouz, H Xu, A V. Hertzel, Kristin Ewing
Articles
BACKGROUND:
Bariatric surgery remains the most effective treatment for reducing adiposity and eliminating type 2 diabetes; however, the mechanism(s) responsible have remained elusive. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) encompass a family of nuclear hormone receptors that upon activation exert control of lipid metabolism, glucose regulation and inflammation. Their role in adipose tissue following bariatric surgery remains undefined.
RESULTS:
Within 7 days, bariatric surgery acutely drives a change in the activity and expression of PPARγ and PPARδ in subcutaneous adipose tissue thereby attenuating lipid storage, increasing lipolysis and potentiating lipid oxidation. This unique metabolic alteration leads to changes in downstream PPARγ/δ targets …

The Southern Ocean plays a critical role in the global climate system by mediating atmosphere–ocean partitioning of heat and carbon dioxide. However, Earth system models are demonstrably deficient in the Southern Ocean, leading to large uncertainties in future air–sea CO2 flux projections under climate warming and incomplete interpretations of natural variability on interannual to geologic time scales. Here, we describe a recent aircraft observational campaign, the O2/N2 Ratio and CO2 Airborne Southern Ocean (ORCAS) study, which collected measurements over the Southern Ocean during January and February 2016. The primary research objective of the ORCAS campaign was to improve observational constraints …

Frataxin-Deficient Neurons And Mice Models Of Friedreich Ataxia Are Improved By Tat-Mtscs-Fxn Treatment., Elena Britti, Fabien Delaspre, Anat Feldman, Melissa Osborne, Hagar Greif, Jordi Tamarit, Joaquim Ros
Faculty Research 2018
Friedreich ataxia (FA) is a rare disease caused by deficiency of frataxin, a mitochondrial protein. As there is no cure available for this disease, many strategies have been developed to reduce the deleterious effects of such deficiency. One of these approaches is based on delivering frataxin to the tissues by coupling the protein to trans-activator of transcription (TAT) peptides, which enables cell membranes crossing. In this study, we tested the efficiency of TAT-MTScs-FXN fusion protein to decrease neurodegeneration markers on frataxin-depleted neurons obtained from dorsal root ganglia (DRG), one of the most affected tissues. In mice models of the disease, …

Trpm7 Current Inactivation: Evidence For Inside-Out Signaling, Tetyana Zhelay, J. Ashot Kozak
Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications
TRPM7 channels conduct metal cations such as Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. In the presence of external Ca2+/Mg2+ TRPM7 has a steeply outwardly rectifying current-voltage (I-V) relation. In the absence of Ca2+/Mg2+ the IV becomes semi-linear. This has been explained by the removal of pore blockade by divalent cations (e.g. Ca2+o/Mg2+o). TRPM7 channels are inhibited by cytoplasmic Mg2+ in a voltage-independent manner, primarily by a reversible reduction in the overall number of conducting channels. Here, we have examined the consequences of external Ca2+ removal and reintroduction on TRPM7 current kinetics. In whole-cell patch clamp with low internal Mg2+, we rapidly …

Findprimarypairs: An Efficient Algorithm For Predicting Element-Transferring Reactant/Product Pairs In Metabolic Networks, Jon Lund Steffensen, Keith M. Dufault-Thompson, Ying Zhang
Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications
The metabolism of individual organisms and biological communities can be viewed as a network of metabolites connected to each other through chemical reactions. In metabolic networks, chemical reactions transform reactants into products, thereby transferring elements between these metabolites. Knowledge of how elements are transferred through reactant/product pairs allows for the identification of primary compound connections through a metabolic network. However, such information is not readily available and is often challenging to obtain for large reaction databases or genome-scale metabolic models. In this study, a new algorithm was developed for automatically predicting the element-transferring reactant/product pairs using the limited information available …

Circadian Rhythms Of Body Temperature And Locomotor Activity In The Antelope Ground Squirrel, Ammospermophilus Leucurus, Roberto Refinetti, G. J. Kenagy
Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
We studied circadian rhythms of body temperature and locomotor activity in antelope ground squirrels (Ammospermophilus leucurus) under laboratory conditions of a 12L:12D light-dark cycle and in constant darkness. Antelope ground squirrels are diurnally active and, exceptionally among ground squirrels and other closely related members of the squirrel family in general, they do not hibernate. Daily oscillations in body temperature consisted of a rise in temperature during the daytime activity phase of the circadian cycle and a decrease in temperature during the nighttime rest phase. The body temperature rhythms were robust (71% of maximal strength) with a daily range …

Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz
Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules
This module will enable faculty and students from across colleges to critically examine their own privileges through reading, dialogue, and Learn By Doing activities. The pragmatic focus will be on self-reflexivity and empowering users to wrestle with how their social identity provides advantages or disadvantages in each of their social relationships. It also clearly addresses two of the four of the university diversity learning objectives. On the one hand, through self-reflection about one’s privileges one innately becomes aware of how privilege may shape social relationships. Ideally, this engenders empathy and consideration of other’s perspectives. On the other hand, as noted …

Biology Department Faculty Works
Haemosporidians are a diverse group of vector-borne parasitic protozoa that includes the agents of human malaria; however, most of the described species are found in birds and reptiles. Although our understanding of these parasites’ diversity has expanded by analyses of their mitochondrial genes, there is limited information on these genes’ evolutionary rates. Here, 114 mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA) were studied from species belonging to four genera: Leucocytozoon, Haemoproteus, Hepatocystis, and Plasmodium. Contrary to previous assertions, the mtDNA is phylogenetically informative. The inferred phylogeny showed that, like the genus Plasmodium, the Leucocytozoon and Haemoproteus genera are not monophyletic groups. Although sensitive to …

Improving Confidence In The Management Of The Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus Armatus) In Shark Bay Part Ii: Socio-Economic Significance Of Commercial Blue Swimmer Crabs In Shark Bay. Frdc Project No. 2012/15, R Daley, I Van Putten
Fisheries Research Reports
The Shark Bay crab fishery is faced with substantial changes. The fishery reopened in late 2013 after a 18 month closure due to a significant stock decline from adverse environmental conditions. The stock is now recovering and The Department of Fisheries Western Australia (DFWA) has implemented substantial management changes including the introduction of catch quotas to limit the catches of individual fishing businesses and a Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) for the fishery. Fishers are challenged with adapting to the changes in management and inter-annual variability in crab catch volume linked to environmental conditions.
