Amphibian skin is rich in mucous glands and poison glands, secreting substances important for gas exchange and playing a fundamental role in chemical defense against predators and microorganisms. In the caecilian Siphonops annulatus (Mikan, 1920) we observed a concentration of enlarged mucous glands in the head region. In the posterior region of the body a similar concentration is made up of enlarged poison glands. These accumulations of glands structurally resemble the macroglands previously reported in anurans and salamanders. The skin glands in these regions are each surrounded by collagen walls forming a honeycomb-like structure. The collagen network in the head …

Placenta-derived amniotic epithelial cells (AECs), a great cell source for tissue engineering and stem cell therapy, are immunologically inert in their native state; however, immunological changes in these cells after culture and differentiation have challenged their applications. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 2D and 3D scaffolds on human lymphocyte antigens (HLA) expression by AECs. The effect of different preparation parameters including pre-freezing time and temperature was evaluated on 3D chitosan–gelatine scaffolds properties. Evaluation of MHC class I, HLA-DR and HLA-G expression in AECs after 7 d culture on 2D bed and 3D scaffold of …

Learning To See The Forest For The Corn: Establishing Sense Of Place And Community In A Field-Based Ecology Course For Pre-Service Educators, Michelle Edgcomb Friday
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation grounded theory techniques were used to characterize pre-service educators’ experiences in a semester-long, field-based ecology course. Through participation in a citizen science project, participants formed a community of practice that extended their conceptions of themselves as ecology students and scientists. Extended field experiences in a variety of local ecosystems contributed to the development of a sense of place. Paired fieldwork with lecture aided their developing ecological literacy and their understanding of place-based pedagogy. All of these combined to support their growing understanding of their role in field-based ecology education. Lack of background in ecology and ecology pedagogy …

© Inter-Research 2018. Low-pH vent systems are ideal natural laboratories to study the consequences of long-term low-pH exposure on marine species and thus identify life-history traits associated with low-pH tolerance. This knowledge can help to inform predictions on which types of species may be less vulnerable in future ocean acidification (OA) scenarios. Accordingly, we investigated how traits of calcifying polychaete species (Serpulidae, Spirorbinae) varied with pH using a functional trait analysis at 2 natural pH gradients around the Castello Aragonese islet off Ischia, Italy. We first observed the distribution and abundance patterns of all calcifying polychaete epiphytes in the canopy …
Tumor Microenvironment Interactions: Forcing Cancer Progression, Michelle Dawson
Tumor Microenvironment Interactions: Forcing Cancer Progression, Michelle Dawson
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
Many of the hallmarks associated with cancer, including unlimited replicative potential, apoptotic evasion, and tissue invasion and metastasis, can be linked to abnormal cytoskeletal or matrix mechanics – important biophysical parameters. A common feature of these biophysical interactions is the transmission of force from the extracellular matrix to the internal cytoskeleton, which forms the structure of the cell. My lab recently showed that increased traction forces transmitted from the internal cytoskeleton to the external environment correlate with increased cancer cell motility, proliferation, and chemoresistance; this was demonstrated in mechanosensitive breast and ovarian cancer cells that respond to changes in matrix …

BACKGROUND—Fusions involving one of three tropomyosin receptor kinases (TRK) occur in diverse cancers in children and adults. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of larotrectinib, a highly selective TRK inhibitor, in adults and children who had tumors with these fusions. METHODS—We enrolled patients with consecutively and prospectively identified TRK fusion– positive cancers, detected by molecular profiling as routinely performed at each site, into one of three protocols: a phase 1 study involving adults, a phase 1–2 study involving children, or a phase 2 study involving adolescents and adults. The primary end point for the combined analysis was the overall response …

Stormwater Management And Ecosystem Services: A Review, Liana Prudencio, Sarah E. Null
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Researchers and water managers have turned to green stormwater infrastructure, such as bioswales, retention basins, wetlands, rain gardens, and urban green spaces to reduce flooding, augment surface water supplies, recharge groundwater, and improve water quality. It is increasingly clear that green stormwater infrastructure not only controls stormwater volume and timing, but also promotes ecosystem services, which are the benefits that ecosystems provide to humans. Yet there has been little synthesis focused on understanding how green stormwater management affects ecosystem services. The objectives of this paper are to review and synthesize published literature on ecosystem services and green stormwater infrastructure and …

Diverse Exocytic Pathways For Mast Cell Mediators, Hao Xu, Na-Ryum Bin, Shuzo Sugita
Diverse Exocytic Pathways For Mast Cell Mediators, Hao Xu, Na-Ryum Bin, Shuzo Sugita
Faculty Publications
Mast cells play pivotal roles in innate and adaptive immunities but are also culprits in allergy, autoimmunity and cardiovascular diseases. Mast cells respond environmental changes by initiating regulated exocytosis/secretion of various biologically active compounds called mediators (e.g., proteases, amines and cytokines). Many of these mediators are stored in granules/lysosomes and rely on an intricate degranulation process for release. Mast cell stabilizers (such as sodium cromoglicate) which prevent such degranulation process have therefore been clinically approved to treat asthma and allergic rhinitis. However, it has become increasingly clear that different mast cell diseases often involve multiple mediators, which seem to rely …

Chlorophyll Dynamics Around The Southern Channel Islands, Craig Gelpi
Chlorophyll Dynamics Around The Southern Channel Islands, Craig Gelpi
Western North American Naturalist
We determine spatial and temporal dynamics of chlorophyll for the Southern California Bight through analysis of 10 years of chlorophyll product derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Earth Observing System satellite Aqua (MODIS-AQUA). Concentrating on the Southern Channel Islands, we find an island mass effect associated with San Nicolas; that is, some chlorophyll originates near the island. This signal is most evident during the fall after the typical spring phytoplankton bloom subsides. In contrast, there is a relative dearth of chlorophyll around Santa Catalina Island, and its seasonal modulation corresponds to the spring bloom, implying that the …

Erythrocytes And Vascular Function: Oxygen And Nitric Oxide, Christine C. Helms, M. T. Gladwin, Daniel B. Kim-Shapiro
Physics Faculty Publications
Erythrocytes regulate vascular function through the modulation of oxygen delivery and the scavenging and generation of nitric oxide (NO). First, hemoglobin inside the red blood cell binds oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to tissues throughout the body in an allosterically regulated process, modulated by oxygen, carbon dioxide and proton concentrations. The vasculature responds to low oxygen tensions through vasodilation, further recruiting blood flow and oxygen carrying erythrocytes. Research has shown multiple mechanisms are at play in this classical hypoxic vasodilatory response, with a potential role of red cell derived vasodilatory molecules, such as nitrite derived nitric oxide and …
