A Parametric Electrostatic Resonator Using Repulsive Force, Mark Pallay, Shahrzad Towfighian
A Parametric Electrostatic Resonator Using Repulsive Force, Mark Pallay, Shahrzad Towfighian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
In this paper, parametric excitation of a repulsive force electrostatic resonator is studied. A theoretical model is developed and validated by experimental data. A correspondence of the model to Mathieu's Equation is made to prove the existence and location of parametric resonance. The repulsive force creates a combined response that shows parametric and subharmonic resonance when driven at twice its natural frequency. The resonator can achieve large amplitudes of almost 24 μm and can remain dynamically stable while tapping on the electrode. Because the pull-in instability is eliminated, the beam bounces off after impact instead of sticking to the electrode. …

A limited pool of proteins attains vast functional repertoire due to posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Arginine methylation is a common posttranslational modification, which is catalyzed by a family of nine protein arginine methyltransferases or PRMTs. These enzymes deposit one or two methyl groups to the nitrogen atoms of arginine side-chains. Elucidating the substrate specificity of each PRMT will promote a better understanding of which signaling networks these enzymes contribute to. Although many PRMT substrates have been identified, and their methylation sites mapped, the optimal target motif for each of the nine PRMTs has not been systematically addressed. Here we describe the …

ABSTRACT
The incidence of C. difficile infections (CDI) has been increasing at an alarming rate. This was precipitated by the emergence of strains with increased virulence, disease severity, and high recurrence rates. These strains also exhibit high propensity for resistance to antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones and beta lactams, which has made the treatment of CDI very challenging. Currently, metronidazole and vancomycin are the most commonly used drugs for the treatment of primary CDI. Metronidazole is used for the treatment of mild to …

Ecomorph Convergence In Stick Insects (Phasmatodea) With Emphasis On The Lonchodinae Of Papua New Guinea, Yelena Marlese Pacheco
Theses and Dissertations
Phasmatodea exhibit a variety of cryptic ecomorphs associated with various microhabitats. Multiple ecomorphs are present in the stick insect fauna from Papua New Guinea, including the tree lobster, spiny, and long slender forms. While ecomorphs have long been recognized in phasmids, there has yet to be an attempt to objectively define and study the evolution of these ecomorphs. Using principal component analysis, PERMANOVA, ANOVA, and phylogenetic reconstructions, we examined the evolution of ecomorphs in the Lonchodinae stick insects of Papua New Guinea. Phylogenetic reconstructions were performed via maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods and ecomorphs were mapped onto recovered topologies to …
Genetic Basis For Elevated Rheumatic Heart Disease Susceptibility In Samoa, John Bowen Allen
Genetic Basis For Elevated Rheumatic Heart Disease Susceptibility In Samoa, John Bowen Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Rheumatic heart disease is an inflammatory heart disease that affects millions of people around the world. Especially high rates of the disease can be found in Oceania, including the island nation of Samoa. Genetic studies of immune response genes have provided insight into a possible genetic link to increased susceptibility to rheumatic heart disease, including the genes that code for the toll-like receptor (TLR) protein family. One of the functions of TLR proteins is to recognize the presence of bacteria via identification of bacterial flagella. My evaluation of a Samoan family identified a variant in the TLR-5 gene that would …

Background: Extreme anoxia tolerance requires a metabolic depression whose modulation could involve small non-coding RNAs (small ncRNAs), which are specific, rapid, and reversible regulators of gene expression. A previous study of small ncRNA expression in embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus, the most anoxiatolerant vertebrate known, revealed a specific expression pattern of small ncRNAs that could play important roles in anoxia tolerance. Here, we conduct a comparative study on the presence and expression of small ncRNAs in the most anoxia-tolerant representatives of several major vertebrate lineages, to investigate the evolution of and mechanisms supporting extreme anoxia tolerance. The epaulette …

Dogs are excellent animal models for human disease. They have extensive veterinary histories, pedigrees, and a unique genetic system due to breeding practices. Despite these advantages, one factor limiting their usefulness is the canine genome reference (CGR) which was assembled using a single purebred Boxer. Although a common practice, this results in many high-quality reads remaining unmapped. To address this whole-genome sequence data from three breeds, Border Collie (n = 26), Bearded Collie (n = 7), and Entlebucher Sennenhund (n = 8), were analyzed to identify novel, non- CGR genomic contigs using the previously validated pseudo-de novo assembly pipeline.
