Support from fellow students and faculty proved invaluable for Susie Penman, the first graduate in the Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Expression program at the University of Mississippi. Penman, who also earned two other degrees from the university -- a bachelor's degree in journalism in 2007 and a master's in Southern studies in 2012 -- received her latest degree in August. She said she made good use of the resources at UM and its Center for the Study of Southern Culture, where the new MFA program is housed.

Reframing Human Trafficking: From A Criminal Justice Problem To A Social Justice Issue, Rebecca Pfeffer
Reframing Human Trafficking: From A Criminal Justice Problem To A Social Justice Issue, Rebecca Pfeffer
Journal of Family Strengths
Laws addressing human trafficking have been passed in all 50 U.S. states as well as at the federal level. Although laws serve an important function in establishing social norms against a behavior, they can also create a belief that it is the responsibility of law enforcement to curb that behavior. Law enforcement and other actors in the criminal justice system have a critical role to play in addressing the problem of human trafficking, but this is not a problem that they can solve alone. A multipronged strategy engaging the fields of public health, medicine, social work, and criminal justice as …

Retributivist Theories’ Conjoined Twins Problems, Brittany L. Deitch
Retributivist Theories’ Conjoined Twins Problems, Brittany L. Deitch
University of Cincinnati Law Review
This Article expands a previously published article, which introduced a novel problem to the centuries-old debate on the retributivist justification of punishment. The first article applied the problem of conjoined twins, where one commits a crime and the other is innocent, to pure retributivism. The conjoined twins problem showed that pure retributivism, which holds absolute duties to punish all who are guilty and none who are innocent, fails as a complete theory of punishment. This Article broadens the application of the conjoined twins problem by applying the problem to other versions of retributivism, including deontological, consequentialist, threshold, negative/weak, victim-conscious, and …

Due Diligence And Legal Obligations Of Employment Screening In Healthcare Organizations, John I. Winn, Kevin H. Govern
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Few career fields are as dynamic as healthcare. Even non-clinical employees and volunteer staff may encounter risks or assume responsibilities unforeseeable in other career fields. Clinical workers in particular must respond to life and death workplace challenges with competence and compassion. Employee reliability is the single most important health system input. Reliability begins with thorough employment background screening. As they minimize risks from “bad hires,” background investigations must also comply with federal, state, and local laws as well as industry standards and best practices. Although predicting the likelihood of future malfeasance by any single employee is impossible, effective backgrounding enhances …

Peer-Delivered Harm Reduction And Recovery Support Services: Initial Evaluation From A Hybrid Recovery Community Drop-In Center And Syringe Exchange Program, Robert D. Ashford, Brenda Curtis, Austin M. Brown
Faculty Articles
Background: Recovery from substance use disorder (SUD) is often considered at odds with harm reduction strategies. More recently, harm reduction has been categorized as both a pathway to recovery and a series of services to reduce the harmful consequences of substance use. Peer recovery support services (PRSS) are effective in improving SUD outcomes, as well as improving the engagement and effectiveness of harm reduction programs. Methods: This study provides an initial evaluation of a hybrid recovery community organization providing PRSS as well as peer-based harm reduction services via a syringe exchange program. Administrative data collected during normal operations of the …
Current Issues In Emerging Elearning, Volume 5, Issue 1: Special Issue On Leveraging Adaptive Courseware
Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This special edition of Current Issues in Emerging eLearning comprises new empirical research focused on strategies for implementing and scaling personalized and adaptive courseware solutions. A special call for studies related to adaptive courseware implementation was announced broadly.
The Personalized Learning Consortium (PLC) at the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) was solicited for research originating from institutions who participated in a postsecondary success initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. As evidenced in the research in this edition, high-enrollment foundation or gateway courses are of particular interest for pioneering initiatives regarding adaptive courses, given these courses …

Achieving A Scaled Implementation Of Adaptive Learning Through Faculty Engagement: A Case Study, Constance Johnson, Emma Zone
Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This paper presents a case study describing the implementation of adaptive learning at Colorado Technical University (CTU) with a focus on faculty adoption. A number of barriers to the adoption of technology will be discussed and more importantly, how CTU overcame these barriers. A description of the key elements of faculty support including training will be outlined as well as the information about the adoption of faculty using data to inform teaching strategies. The authors argue that if given the choice, faculty at CTU would prefer adaptive learning technology in their courses and welcome the use of technology and data …

‘Affluent’ Justice: The Role Of Ses In Sentencing Severity, Sonia Pappachan
Student Theses
Imprisonment is the harshest punishment the law can give a defendant; it has considerable consequences on the incarcerated, during and after. Therefore, the sentencing phase of the criminal proceedings should be fair and balanced. However, the literature and researches that have explored the biases in sentencing found that there is a disparity in sentencing due to the characteristics of both the victim and the defendant. The current study used a sample of 209 online survey participants to explore the effect of the socioeconomic status of the victim and defendant on sentencing length. Participants reviewed a vignette of a criminal offense …

The Role Of Authority In Retrieval Enhanced Suggestibility (Res), Arielle Branco
The Role Of Authority In Retrieval Enhanced Suggestibility (Res), Arielle Branco
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
Retrieval Enhanced Suggestibility (RES) is a phenomenon which occurs when participants are given an initial memory test followed by misinformation. The present study found that the manipulation of the authority of misleading information does not have an effect on RES. Ninety-nine undergraduate students completed five phases: watching a video, taking/not taking an initial test, assignment of authority level, presentation of misleading narrative, and a final memory test. The results indicate that testing condition was significant with those who took an initial memory test reporting more misinformation. Sentence type for response time was also significant with control sentences being read faster …
