Us Immigration Enforcement And The Making Of Unintended Returnees, Oscar F. Gil-Garcia
Us Immigration Enforcement And The Making Of Unintended Returnees, Oscar F. Gil-Garcia
Human Development Faculty Scholarship
US immigration enforcement has led to a rise in the number of deportations. Several studies identify deportees as more likely to attempt re-entry to reunify with family members in a variety of international settings. These demographic changes have prompted some scholars to theorize how deportation produces a unique mobility subject: the unintended returnee. The importance of studying unintended returnees is amplified when we examine the 3.1 million unauthorized migrants deported by the US between 2005-2013. Over 1.5 million children living in the US were impacted by these removals. Data from the US Department of Homeland Security, indicate that among those …
‘Freedom In Her Mind’: Women’S Prison Zines And Feminist Writing In The 1970s, Olivia Wright
‘Freedom In Her Mind’: Women’S Prison Zines And Feminist Writing In The 1970s, Olivia Wright
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper examines the under-researched and undervalued area of American women’s prison zines. It discusses three publications created at the California Institute for Women, Frontera, during the 1970s, placing them in the wider contexts of prison reform and the women’s movement. Through close analysis, it demonstrates the influences of, and connections to, the feminist print culture at the time and how groups such as the Santa Cruz Women’s Prison Project enabled their publication and influenced their ideology. Examining women’s prison zines can contribute to conversations about women’s liberation by offering new perspectives on what I call ‘collective autobiography’, and giving …

Exploring Places Of Street Drug Dealing In A Downtown Area In Brazil: An Analysis Of The Reliability Of Google Street View In International Criminological Research, Elenice De Souza Oliveira, Ko-Hsin Hsu
Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study assesses the reliability of Google Street View (GSV) in auditing environmental features that help create hotbeds of drug dealing in Belo Horizonte, one of Brazil’s largest cities. Based on concepts of “crime generators” and “crime enablers,” a set of 40 items were selected using arrest data related to drug activities for the period between 2007 and 2011. These items served to develop a GSV data collection instrument used to observe features of 135 street segments that were identified as drug dealing hot spots in downtown Belo Horizonte. The study employs an intra-class correlation (ICC) statistics as a measure …

General Practitioner Contributions To Achieving Sustained Healthcare For Offenders: A Qualitative Study, Cath Quinn, Katie Denman, Philippa Smithson, Christabel Owens, Rod Sheaff, John Campbell, Ian Porter, Jill Annison, Richard Byng
Peninsula Medical School
Abstract Background: Offenders frequently have substantial healthcare needs and, like many other socially marginalised groups, often receive healthcare in inverse proportion to their needs. Improved continuity of healthcare over time could contribute to addressing these needs. General Practitioners need to be able to support people with complex social and medical problems, even in systems that are not specifically designed to manage individuals with such degrees of complexity. We aimed to examine offenders’ perspectives on factors that contributed to, or worked against, creating and sustaining their access to healthcare. Methods: From a sample of 200 participants serving community or prison sentences …

Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz
Nosce Te Ipsum (Know Thyself): Recognizing Privilege In Yourself And Society, Ryan Alaniz
Diversity and Inclusion Resource Modules
This module will enable faculty and students from across colleges to critically examine their own privileges through reading, dialogue, and Learn By Doing activities. The pragmatic focus will be on self-reflexivity and empowering users to wrestle with how their social identity provides advantages or disadvantages in each of their social relationships. It also clearly addresses two of the four of the university diversity learning objectives. On the one hand, through self-reflection about one’s privileges one innately becomes aware of how privilege may shape social relationships. Ideally, this engenders empathy and consideration of other’s perspectives. On the other hand, as noted …
