Issue 1: Anti-Black Racism, Bio-Power, And Governmentality: Deconstructing The Suffering Of Black Families Involved With Child Welfare, Doret Phillips, Gordon Pon
Journal of Law and Social Policy
This article focuses on how colonialism, anti-Black racism and white supremacy are embodied by Ontario’s child welfare system in relation to narratives of suffering experienced by Black families involved with this sector. We discuss how these experiences are an embodiment of the Foucauldian concepts of bio-power and governmentality. Understanding this embodiment is crucial for deconstructing how anti-Black racism, colonialism, and white supremacy are manifested in the day-to-day policies and practices of child welfare. To explicate these policies and practices we discuss three inter-related factors: 1) the historical rise of the welfare state, 2) anti-Black racism, and 3) bio-power and governmentality.

Issue 1: Explaining The Economic Disparity Gap In The Rate Of Substantiated Child Maltreatment In Canada, David Rothwell, Jaime Wegner-Lohin, Elizabeth Fast, Kaila De Boer, Nico Trocmé, Barbara Fallon, Tonino Esposito
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Children from families living in conditions of economic hardship are at five times greater risk of substantiated harm of child abuse and neglect compared to their upper socioeconomic counterparts in the United States. This difference in risk across economic groups is referred to as the economic disparity gap in child maltreatment. Little is known about how the economic disparity gap functions in Canada. The purpose of this study is to understand the prevalence of economic hardship in the child welfare system and explain the economic disparity gap. We used the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect, 2008 …

Management-Level Officers’ Experiences With The Ferguson Effect, Justin Nix, Scott E. Wolfe
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors associated with management-level officers’ sensitivity to various manifestations of the “Ferguson effect.”
Design/methodology/approach
A survey was administered to police officers attending an advanced training institute in the Southeastern USA in the fall of 2015. Specifically, a series of items first inquired about negative attitudes attributable to deadly force incidents throughout the country, followed by items tapping into theoretically relevant concepts including self-legitimacy, audience legitimacy, and peer attachment.
Findings
Findings suggest that like line-level officers, police managers may also harbor various attitudes attributable to a Ferguson effect – including less …

Ethics And The Policing Of African Americans And Those Of African Descent In America, Richard Brown Iii, Abhijeet R. Shirsat
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
The criminal justice system has a race problem. Data shows that racial disparities exist within corrections. The numbers of minorities that are entangled within the courts, the number of arrests made by police and the numbers of unarmed blacks who have recently been killed by the police, support the notion that who have been given a pass by county prosecutors and states attorneys. Effective targeting of African-Americans and those of color (hot spots policing) by the police officers is an important component which needs further examination. To fulfill this gap in the literature, this study will analyze the perspective of …
Attitudes Toward Prisoners: An Introductory Study, Kathleen Geyer
Attitudes Toward Prisoners: An Introductory Study, Kathleen Geyer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The United States has the largest prison population in the world and it just seems to keep growing (Tsai & Scommegna 2012). The current research focuses on attitudes toward prisoners and how that may influence someone’s likelihood of returning to prison. Attitudes toward prisoners was measured using the Attitudes Toward Prisoners scale (ATP). The research hypotheses are as follows: 1) females and people of color will have higher original ATP scores than males and whites; 2) people who have experienced discrimination and/or have some connection to the prison system will have higher original ATP scores than those who have not; …

The Wisdom On Terror, Sam J. Tangredi
Naval War College Review
The shock of the 11 September attacks prompted an immediate renewal of pub- lic interest in books on terrorism, a genre that attracted considerable attention in the 1970s but had since maintained primarily an academic readership. Sales of books on terrorist groups, Islamic fundamentalism, and American policies toward terrorism skyrocketed. Some are reissues, some are newly published scholarly works, while others advocate specific policies to be followed. To under- stand the current wisdom on this topic requires an examination of all three categories.

New Rules For War?, Joel Rosenthal
Naval War College Review
In launching a campaign to disarm and liberate Iraq, the United States has crossed, some say hurdled across, two thresholds—one strategic, the other diplomatic. Strategically, the United States delivered on its promise to act in self-defense, absent an actual or even imminent armed attack, against threats from weapons of mass destruction. Diplomatically, the United States demonstrated its willingness to act decisively and unilaterally, if nec- essary, in the face of strong opposition from its allies.

The Relationship Between State Effectiveness And State Legitimacy: A Quantitative Test, Bich Thi Ngoc Tran
The Relationship Between State Effectiveness And State Legitimacy: A Quantitative Test, Bich Thi Ngoc Tran
Theses and Dissertations
Legitimacy is a contested concept in political science. The question of legitimacy has been addressed in various topics, including state formation, state building, and state failure. This research is an attempt to quantitatively test the relationship between state legitimacy and state effectiveness and development in the economy, politics, and society. By examining the literature on legitimacy and its sources, the research tests the following hypothesis: a state with better performance in macro issues, including economic performance, social welfare, and political participation, is more likely to enjoy a higher level of legitimacy. In other words, this study attempts to establish a …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Criminology’s most recent theoretical tradition involves examination of the developmental onset, continuity, and desistance from offending behavior across the life course. A prominent life course perspective organized around social bonding was proffered by Robert J. Sampson and John H. Laub in dual volumes that include Crime in the Making: Pathways and Turning Points Through Life (1993), and Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives (2003). Because Sampson and Laub’s age-graded theory is based on a sample of White males born in the 1920s and 1930s, and matured during a historical period of vast economic growth, the universal theoretical processes emphasized in their theory …

Online Socialization And Delinquency: Expanding The Study Of Peer Influence In Criminology, Timothy Mccuddy
Online Socialization And Delinquency: Expanding The Study Of Peer Influence In Criminology, Timothy Mccuddy
Dissertations
Criminologists typically study peer influence within traditional contexts such as schools and neighborhoods. Spurred by the ubiquitous use of electronic devices, recent research finds that online peer delinquency can also have deleterious effects on adolescent behavior. This has important implications for the study of delinquency since youth today are digital natives, meaning their developmental years are spent in a world reliant on technology and Internet-connected devices. Through the use of computer-mediated communication (CMC), adolescents can forge friendships with those found within the cyber context, a virtual environment unrestricted by the confines of space and time. This context not only provides …

Assessing Attention, Nicole Hagan
Assessing Attention, Nicole Hagan
Scholars Week
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental health disorder that can be recognized by its symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity (Anderson, 2012). While having these symptoms is not desirable to most, presenting them in a psychological evaluation can be advantageous to some. College students diagnosed with ADHD can receive special benefits, such as prescription medication that can be misused for recreational purposes or to enhance academic and/or athletic performance (Sansone & Sansone, 2011). The current research project looked at feigned ADHD and how one responds to an ADHD measure when instructed to feign, either with or without …
The Impact Of Sound Source Location On Change Deafness, Nicole Hagan
The Impact Of Sound Source Location On Change Deafness, Nicole Hagan
Scholars Week
This research project investigated the impact of sound source location on the phenomenon of change deafness. Change deafness occurs when participants listen to multiple sounds in an auditory scene and are unable to identify which sound disappeared from the scene. This phenomenon is exacerbated when the participants must keep track of four or more stimuli simultaneously. However, how the influence of sound source distance on the ability to detect changes in auditory scenes has not been previously investigated in a change deafness task. This is important because in the distance domain, the signal will be degraded by both decreasing level …
