Protective Multi-Level Factors In Adolescents Of Mothers With Mental Disorders, Chante Evette Washington-Oates May 2018

Protective Multi-Level Factors In Adolescents Of Mothers With Mental Disorders, Chante Evette Washington-Oates

Open Access Dissertations

Maternal mental disorders (MD), including substance use, are chronic conditions associated with poor child mental health. Yet, some children of these mothers thrive and experience healthy development and functioning. Despite this, little research examines protective factors, e.g., parenting practices and self-management beliefs and behaviors, in children of mothers with MD. This dissertation was ancillary to a randomized trial of a family-based intervention for mothers with MD and their children. The aims of this dissertation were to: 1) examine whether maternal positive parenting practices are related to adolescent emotional (internalizing) and behavioral (externalizing) problems, after controlling for mother’s psychological distress and …

The Validity Of Open-Source Data When Assessing Jail Suicides, Amanda Thomas, Jacqueline Scott, Jeff Mellow May 2018

The Validity Of Open-Source Data When Assessing Jail Suicides, Amanda Thomas, Jacqueline Scott, Jeff Mellow

Publications and Research

Background: The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Deaths in Custody Reporting Program is the primary source for jail suicide research, though the data is restricted from general dissemination. This study is the first to examine whether jail suicide data obtained from publicly available sources can help inform our understanding of this serious public health problem.

Methods: Of the 304 suicides that were reported through the DCRP in 2009, roughly 56 percent (N = 170) of those suicides were identified through the open-source search protocol. Each of the sources was assessed based on how much information was collected on the incident and …

Undocumented Queer Latinx Students: Testimonio Of Survival, Maria E. Fernández May 2018

Undocumented Queer Latinx Students: Testimonio Of Survival, Maria E. Fernández

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Recent U.S. political turmoil has deliberately embedded fear into many marginalized and underrepresented people living in the U.S. The fact that the United States was founded on the demanding work of diverse populations of immigrants is vitally important to how immigrants are being treated today. In 2016, the U.S. presidential electoral win for Donald Trump left many marginalized communities—including Undocumented Queer Latinx students—fearful of how his administration would affect their communities. This paper reviews literatures on Queer immigration history, the homophobic and transphobic psychological history behind legal immigration barriers, and the recent mobilization to include Undocumented Queer Latinx students in …

At Risk Youths: Schools, Juvenile Delinquency, And The Prison Industrial Complex, Ashantia M. Day

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

Juvenile delinquency has been a social issue for many decades. While much research has studied the deviant behaviors of the adolescent, little focus has been placed on the degree to which the school environment plays on delinquent behavior. The purpose of this project is to use schools as the subject to contextualize the !ink bet\"Jeen racia!ized criminalization and the disproportionate rate at which black youths are in contact with the Juvenile Justice System. This work will apply labeling theory, theories of academic tracking/grouping, use of analytic autobiography, critical race theory and a Marxist critique of capitalism to investigate the significant …

Fresh Eyes: Young V. State’S New Eyewitness Identification Test And Prospects For Alaska And Beyond, Savannah Hansen Best May 2018

Fresh Eyes: Young V. State’S New Eyewitness Identification Test And Prospects For Alaska And Beyond, Savannah Hansen Best

Alaska Law Review

This Note evaluates recent developments in Alaska’s eyewitness identification admissibility doctrine under the 2016 case Young v. Alaska. For the past four decades, federal and most state courts have relied on the Supreme Court’s 1977 ruling in Manson v. Brathwaite, which identified five admissibility factors—known as the “Biggers factors”—for establishing the reliability of eyewitness identifications made under the influence of unnecessarily suggestive police procedures (“systemic variables”). In recent decades, however, social and psychological science has demonstrated the flaws in the five Biggers factors as reliability indicators and the impact of non-suggestive circumstantial (or “estimator”) variables on eyewitness …

Who Can Take The Heat? Investigating The Relationships Between Psychopathy, Stress, And Behavioral Reactions To A Mock Interrogation Situation, Jonathon M. Hall May 2018

Who Can Take The Heat? Investigating The Relationships Between Psychopathy, Stress, And Behavioral Reactions To A Mock Interrogation Situation, Jonathon M. Hall

Honors College Theses

The primary purpose of this experiment was to test whether individuals higher in psychopathy would experience less stress during a mock interrogation situation compared to individuals lower in psychopathy. Psycholegal experiments using a mock interrogation paradigm have focused on the situational conditions that increase the likelihood of false confessions. To our knowledge these studies have not investigated factors that predict a guilty participant’s refusal to confess. We chose to investigate whether psychopathy would predict refusal to confess when guilty of a mock crime. Psychopathy is a personality disorder often characterized by callous affect, interpersonal manipulation, and impulsiveness. In addition, individuals …

Describing The Education Reform Landscape: A Typology Of State Charter School Laws, William Flanary Dabney Jr. May 2018

Describing The Education Reform Landscape: A Typology Of State Charter School Laws, William Flanary Dabney Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since 2014, 42 states have adopted charter school legislation. Research has been conducted on charter school effectiveness and legislative adoption. However, limitations in the research exist regarding school choice in that studies address inequalities and outcomes at the school level, with limited attention to the state-level policy environment. Additionally, research does not consider variations in state school choice policy nor does it link policy differences to equitable educational outcomes.

This descriptive study described and categorized the variation of state charter school polices and explored differences in state level education finance, student demographics and academic outcomes, and school type characteristics. A …

Cruel & Unusual Pathways To Crime: A Call For Gender- And Trauma-Informed Correctional Care, Emily Frances Musson May 2018

Cruel & Unusual Pathways To Crime: A Call For Gender- And Trauma-Informed Correctional Care, Emily Frances Musson

Journal of Law and Policy

Many female inmates have suffered trauma by way of interpersonal violence, which often precipitates mental health issues as well as criminal behavior later in life. Eighth Amendment jurisprudence dictates that they are entitled to adequate mental health treatment while incarcerated. Despite an influx of female inmates and the number of those requiring treatment, mental health programs in penal institutions have been designed to serve the needs of incarcerated men. Meanwhile, psychosocial scholarship has determined that mental health treatment needs to be informed by offenders’ common experiences as women and victims of gender-based violence (gender-responsive), as well as survivors of trauma …

Nigerian Terror: The Rise Of Boko Haram, Kelly Moss

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria was the world’s deadliest terrorist group of 2014, second deadliest in 2015, and is one of the most perplexing terrorist groups to arise in the past 50 years. This study sought to identify how Boko Haram rose to power in Nigeria, and found the following factors to be explanatory: Nigeria’s weak state capacity stemming from colonialism and poor post-colonial governance, the politicization of religion, and Boko Haram’s relationship with other terrorist organizations such as Al-Shabab, Al-Qaeda, and Daesh. This study further analyzed domestic and international responses to Boko Haram, up to present day, and …

Hilltops And Marches: A Cultural And Semiotic Analysis Of Pepsi And Coca-Cola Advertising Strategies, Samuel Herrmann May 2018

Hilltops And Marches: A Cultural And Semiotic Analysis Of Pepsi And Coca-Cola Advertising Strategies, Samuel Herrmann

Senior Honors Theses

The Coca-Cola Company released an advertisement in 1971 that had powerful themes of unity in a time of significant discord around the world. Almost 50 years later, the Pepsi Company released an advertisement that aimed to accomplish similar values of unity and commonality when the world seemed at odds with itself. While both advertisements sought to convey similar messages, the reception could not have been more different. Coca-Cola has experienced continued praise for their famous “Hilltop” advertisement while Pepsi was forced to take their advertisement down within 24 hours of its release. This paper utilizes semiotic theory to analyze the …
