Virtuous Discourse In The Specialty Coffee Sector: How Social Responsibility Practices Fragment Pursuits For A Supply Chain, Jane H. Motsinger Apr 2018

Virtuous Discourse In The Specialty Coffee Sector: How Social Responsibility Practices Fragment Pursuits For A Supply Chain, Jane H. Motsinger

Geography ETDs

A diversity of public and private initiatives strive to address the human-environment challenges confronting the global coffee industry, including certifications like Fairtrade, direct trade sourcing models, and efforts led by NGOs. Research examines the outcomes of major certification programs and the private initiatives of corporations like Starbucks. Much less is known about the business practices of the small specialty coffee businesses that increasingly advertise sustainable business practices. Yet, their collective business practices likely influence the industry-wide efforts to achieve a sustainable supply chain. This research examines how small specialty coffee roasting and importing companies represent their socially responsible business practices …

Protecting The Right To Exist As A People: Intellectual Property As A Means To Protect Traditional Knowledge And Indigenous Culture, Sean Collin, Yvette Collin, Michael Koskey Apr 2018

Protecting The Right To Exist As A People: Intellectual Property As A Means To Protect Traditional Knowledge And Indigenous Culture, Sean Collin, Yvette Collin, Michael Koskey

Wellness & Healing: Indigenous Innovations & Alaska Native Research

The dominant Western culture has created a legal system premised upon an individualistic and commercial foundation for intellectual property rights (IPR). This system necessarily excludes the protection of traditional knowledge and other components of Indigenous cultures, as well as concepts of communal responsibility for the keeping and transfer of such ideas and knowledge. These concepts are foundational to Indigenous knowledge systems in Alaska, as well as throughout the world. Today, a focus on this issue is critical to the preservation of indigenous cultures and their ways of knowing. We examine where national and international intellectual property rights systems are in …

Still Worth Fighting Over? A Joint Response, P. H. Liotta, James F. Miskel Apr 2018

Still Worth Fighting Over? A Joint Response, P. H. Liotta, James F. Miskel

Naval War College Review

Readers may recall that in the Autumn 2002 issue of the Naval War College Review, Professor James F. Miskel, of the National Security Decision Making Department, argued that the U.S. government often defines national interests in such general terms that its specific goals are not clearly communicated to the American public and to other governments.1 In the Spring 2003 issue, Professor P. H. Liotta, also of the National Security Decision Making Department, responded with a counter- essay arguing that while distinguishing core strategic interests—those for which Americans would be willing to die—from significant interests is almost never easy, it is …

Making Room For Bilingual Education: A Mexican-American Study, Julie Donnadieu Apr 2018

Making Room For Bilingual Education: A Mexican-American Study, Julie Donnadieu

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This Independent Study aims to explain, through the author's new understandings, the political underpinnings and concrete effects of the English-only movement that practically eliminated bilingual education programs in the public school systems of California and Arizona in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Through a review of the pertinent literature, this review presents a broad history of bilingual education in the United Sates, and the negative effects English-only legislation has had on the linguistic, academic and social development of immigrant children in California and Arizona. As the United Sates' social and racial composition has changed in the last decades, the battle against …

Getting In Each Other’S Way: Enlarging The Possibilities Of Sustainable Community Development Through Communication, Cecelia M. Long Apr 2018

Getting In Each Other’S Way: Enlarging The Possibilities Of Sustainable Community Development Through Communication, Cecelia M. Long

Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate aim of sustainable community development is to produce, promote, and preserve community well-being. When community developers are unable to effectively articulate and actualize this aim, the individuals and communities they serve needlessly suffer, especially those in poverty circumstances, homelessness, and other forms of destitution. In this thesis, I explore the communication between organizational leaders, their collaborative partners, and participatory community members as a vital component of sustainable community development. This study addresses the lack of a comprehensive set of communicative strategies for community developers to produce sustainable change and well-being for all. I conducted twenty-five in-depth interviews with …

Beyond The Buzzword: Examining Collective Impact As A Framework For Cross-Sector Collaboration, Mollie Brooks Apr 2018

Beyond The Buzzword: Examining Collective Impact As A Framework For Cross-Sector Collaboration, Mollie Brooks

VA Engage Journal

Despite the sizable financial and human capital investment in the nonprofit sector, large-scale social issues, such as poverty and hunger, continue to plague our society. Collective impact, a framework for cross-sector collaboration that emerged in 2011, offers a method to harness the capabilities of each sector to generate systems-level change. In this paper, the author examines the strengths and weaknesses of collective impact by conducting interviews with stakeholders from a collective impact initiative addressing education in a mid-sized city in the United States. This study reports the findings, implications, and recommendations gained from a qualitative analysis of the interview data.

Policy Communication And The Influence Of Agricultural Communities On Karst Landscapes: A Case Study In Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam, Elizabeth Willenbrink Apr 2018

Policy Communication And The Influence Of Agricultural Communities On Karst Landscapes: A Case Study In Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam, Elizabeth Willenbrink

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Karst landscapes are vulnerable to human influence, especially agricultural practices. The interconnectedness between surface activities and subsurface environments make karst landscapes particularly susceptible to soil erosion and water contamination. The likelihood of these two phenomena happening increases when agricultural intensification, irrigation, or fertilizer application occurs. This situation arises frequently in Vietnam, where 18% of the country is karst terrain and 60% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihoods (Farming First 2009). In order to mitigate the negative consequences of agriculture on karst landscapes, effective implementation of policy to regulate human activities and increased communication of these policies to …

The Unborn Victims Of Violence Act: Expanding A Neoliberal, Carceral State, Dominic Scialabba Apr 2018

The Unborn Victims Of Violence Act: Expanding A Neoliberal, Carceral State, Dominic Scialabba

Paideia

Fetal-protection laws, such as the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, are a contemporary means of upholding and spreading the neoliberal administrative state and mass incarceration within the United States. This act creates a political culture in which laws similar to the Unborn Victims of Violence Act can be applied to restrict mothers’ access to proper health services, and to even imprison expecting mothers. I argue these laws do not work to prevent domestic violence, but rather participate in the larger prison industrial complex. A second key finding is that fetal-protection laws stand as obstacles to achieving reproductive justice in policing …

Design Of A Green Community Located At West Santa Clara Street And Delmas Avenue In San Jose, Steven Ashe, Emelia Hamilton

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

A mixed-use land development and transportation system was designed for a nine (9) acre plot of land near downtown San Jose. The goal of this project was to design a safe, green, and attractive community for residents to live, interact with their neighbors, and enjoy the amenities within the community. The community includes an apartment complex, park, playground, picnic area, retail stores, and offices. The scope of work and analysis for this project included drainage design, earthwork calculations, street design, and traffic analysis. Low impact designs were used to reduce the amount of waste, pollution, and runoff for the project. …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Higher Education Leaders As Portrayed In The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Colette Anderson Chelf Apr 2018

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Higher Education Leaders As Portrayed In The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Colette Anderson Chelf

Dissertations

Leadership represents an abstraction of human thought. While functionalist theories propose leader-centric models, contemporary leadership theories embrace a postmodern paradigm acknowledging ontological and epistemological assumptions of qualitative study. This ideology suggests a multi-dimensional model of leadership that reflects the complexity and fluidity of leadership in practice. Emergent theories explore the social construction of leadership, rather than an individual leader’s traits or behaviors. Our collective understanding of leadership is manifest in the (re)creation of leadership as exemplified in social discourse such as newspaper reporting.

The purpose of the study is to reveal socially accepted archetypes assigned to higher education leaders, as …

Investigating The Influence Of Esri Story Map Design On Partcipation In Sustainability-Related Activities, Brittany Grace Austin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Decades of scientific inquiry have conveyed evidence in support of sustainability efforts to mitigate some of the greatest challenges and dilemmas facing modern and future societies. The solutions to these dilemmas may not be achievable in the short-term, yet, through increased public participation in sustainable community development, smallscale, localized solutions can be obtained. This preliminary research explored the influence of Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) story map designs on participation in sustainability-related activities among individuals who expressed interest in sustainable lifestyles. Specifically, this exploratory study was designed to demonstrate the applicability of interactive web geographic information systems (GIS) applications as …

An Analysis Of Poverty In Latin America And Three Community Development Strategies As A Solution, Grace Higgins Apr 2018

An Analysis Of Poverty In Latin America And Three Community Development Strategies As A Solution, Grace Higgins

Selected Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine and analyze three community development models and the impact they have on poverty in Latin America. This thesis also develops an understanding of how inequality effects poverty in Latin America and explores three community development strategies that could be implemented in Latin America consisting of agropolitan development, modernization development, and development by market expansion. In addition to these three development models, this thesis analyzes critical factors that contribute to the sustainability of a community, and how each of the three models incorporate or do not incorporate those factors.

Food Localization: Empowering Community Food Systems Through The Farm Bill, Joshua Ulan Galperin, Brian Fink, Alexandra Schluntz

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Our intent in this Article is not to delineate foods that are local or not local, nor is it to lionize one agricultural production method over another. Rather, we hope to build on the literature that for many decades has documented how local communities have emerged as influential actors on the American food system through establishing control over local supply chains often alongside national and global supply chains. We begin with Part I, which explores how some food-system scholars have conceptualized these democratic changes occurring. We look to Thomas Lyson’s concept of civic agriculture, which attempts to move corporation-oriented communities …

Creating An Ecology Of Hope: Nature-Based Training To Increase Compassion And Collaboration In Building Sustainable Communities, Charlotte Herz Apr 2018

Creating An Ecology Of Hope: Nature-Based Training To Increase Compassion And Collaboration In Building Sustainable Communities, Charlotte Herz

Capstone Collection

In an increasingly technological world, the human connection with nature is falling behind. Acts of violence are more prevalent in media and mainstream news reports. Environmental concerns and issues are in the fore-front of today’s policy debates. Yet, professional development opportunities that are being provided to a quickly changing work force are becoming stagnate. If technology is constantly improving why would teaching methods remain stagnate? I was drawn to the connection of nature’s inherent adaptability and the human’s desire to maintain the status quo. I chose to explore this idea through a training CLC so that I may apply the …

Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment Of Hydrothermal Processing Of Microalgae For Biofuels And Co-Product Generation, Andrew P. Bessette Apr 2018

Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment Of Hydrothermal Processing Of Microalgae For Biofuels And Co-Product Generation, Andrew P. Bessette

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Traditional processing methods of algae to biofuels require dewatering after harvesting of the algae before the lipids can be extracted. This is typically the most energy intensive and therefore the most expensive step. Old Dominion University (ODU) has successfully utilized a flash hydrolysis (a kind of hydrothermal) process where proteins are solubilized into the liquid phase of product and the remainder lipid-rich, low nitrogen product is separated into a solid phase. The solid phase (lipid-rich) is then an ideal candidate for biofuel feedstock and the liquid phase, or hydrolysate, can be used for coproducts such as a source of nutrients …

The Contribution Of Transportation And Land Use To Citizen Perceptions Of Livability In Oregon Mpos, Rebecca Lewis, Robert Parker Apr 2018

The Contribution Of Transportation And Land Use To Citizen Perceptions Of Livability In Oregon Mpos, Rebecca Lewis, Robert Parker

TREC Final Reports

What is livability? How does the built environment influence resident perceptions of livability? Although livability is a broadly used term and a key goal in land use and transportation plans at the state level, it is unclear whether residents think their neighborhoods are livable and what contributes to their perception of livability. The purpose of this project was to understand how Oregonians, in neighborhoods of varying densities and within Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), perceive livability at the nexus of transportation and land use. We sought to understand how residents define and perceive livability in three different MPOs in the state: …
