Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews
Resiliency And Adolescent Motherhood In The Context Of Residential Foster Care, Autumn M. Bermea, Brad Forenxa, Heidi Adams Rueda, Michelle L. Toews
Social Work Faculty Publications
The purpose of the current study was to explore how adolescent mothers experienced pregnancy and parenthood within the context of residential foster care. Adolescent mothers in foster care are a vulnerable population although little research has explored their experiences, particularly from a resiliency framework. The present study begins to fill this gap by conducting focus group interviews with 39 adolescent mothers living in residential foster care. Using thematic analytic methodology, we uncovered themes that highlighted not only the mothers’ struggles, but also their capacities for resilience. Specifically, the mothers experienced societal stigma, parenting judgment, and challenging relationships with their child(ren)’s …

The Lived Experiences Of Nurses Caring For Pediatric Behavioral Health Patients In The Emergency Department, Jamie Rivera
The Lived Experiences Of Nurses Caring For Pediatric Behavioral Health Patients In The Emergency Department, Jamie Rivera
Doctoral Dissertations
Obtaining behavioral health evaluation and care for the pediatric population is particularly difficult. In recent years, emergency departments (EDs) have become a customary location for patients to seek behavioral health treatment. This spike has created unforeseen problems and caring for this vulnerable population presents ED nurses with many challenges. The purpose of the study was to understand the lived experience of nurses caring for pediatric behavioral health patients in the ED. A qualitative, descriptive phenomenological research design was utilized. Participants (N = 15) engaged in semi-structured interviews and Colaizzi’s (1978) method was used to identify themes. The data analysis …

From Maggie To May: Forty Years Of (De)Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward
From Maggie To May: Forty Years Of (De)Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward
Articles
Upon becoming Prime Minister, Theresa May installed industrial strategy as one of the principal planks of her economic policy. May's embrace of industrial strategy, with its tacit acceptance of a positive role for the state in steering and coordinating economic activity, initially appears to be a decisive break with an era dating back to Margaret Thatcher, in which government intervention was regarded as heresy. Whilst there are doubtless novel features, this article argues that continuity is the overriding theme of May's industrial strategy. First, despite the reluctance to confess it, like every UK government over the past forty years, May …

Implementing A Bottom Of The Pyramid Eye Care Solution, Patrick Long, Eric Martin, Paden Troxell, Charles Kim
The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change
Eighty-nine percent of the world’s visually impaired live in low-income regions (IAPB/WHO), and uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of moderate and severe visual impairment. Poor eye care in developing nations hinders development and advancement by creating barriers to education and labor inefficiencies. In some developing countries, few individuals can afford, or even have access to, corrective eye care. We propose the global eye care problem can be addressed using bottom of the pyramid thinking.

Is The Past Really Prologue? The Effect Of A University’S Consolidation On Its Jstor Subscription, Melissa E. Johnson, Kate Kosturski
Is The Past Really Prologue? The Effect Of A University’S Consolidation On Its Jstor Subscription, Melissa E. Johnson, Kate Kosturski
Charleston Library Conference
University consolidations do more than just affect students and faculty. Changes to the makeup of a campus and the programs available can have a great influence on needed journal and database subscriptions. The electronic resources and serials librarian from Augusta University and the outreach coordinator from JSTOR investigated how the consolidation of two universities with different academic missions changed the usage of their six JSTOR collections. Using data produced by JSTOR in 2012, prior to consolidation, and compiled again for 2016, the authors describe changes in usage, factors that could affect usage, and the implications for future resources.
Pushing Forward: A Look Into The Environment Of South Korean Female Film Directors, Victoria Swart
Pushing Forward: A Look Into The Environment Of South Korean Female Film Directors, Victoria Swart
The Kabod
The Busan International Film Festival, held in Busan, South Korea, is known as Asia’s largest film event, drawing filmmakers and movie stars from all over the world. The 2017 festival witnessed a notable feat in which for the first time, the festival was bookended by films directed by women (Brasor). Though the filmmakers themselves argued that the lineup of their films was unintentional, nonetheless the event shows that female directors were gaining notice at the festival—an uncommon trend globally and in South Korea. Though conditions are improving, female film directors face unique social and economic challenges in South Korea, a …

The Influence Of Window Opening Habits On The Residential Energy Use In Nearly Zero Energy Buildings, Silke Verbruggen, Marc Delghust, Jelle Laverge, Arnold Janssens
International Building Physics Conference 2018
In this paper, we discuss the presence of habits in the window opening behaviour of social housing tenants in a nearly zero-energy development in Belgium. A window opening habit can be defined as an action with a window that is repeated daily around the same time independently of the prevailing weather conditions. A carbon neutral social housing estate (106 apartments and 90 single family dwellings) was used as a test case. Questionnaires, window opening logging with a building monitoring system and cross-sectional surveys were used to collect window opening data. A method to identify window opening habits is determined. Up …
