Empowerment, Declined: Paradoxes Of Microfinance And Gendered Subjectivity In Urban India, Smitha Radhakrishnan
Empowerment, Declined: Paradoxes Of Microfinance And Gendered Subjectivity In Urban India, Smitha Radhakrishnan
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Microfinance today constitutes a gendered frontier of global capital, targeting working class women for small loans through commercial microfinance institutions (MFIs). Drawing on ethnography and interviews with for-profit MFIs in India and their clients, this study aims to understand the mechanisms through which microfinance shapes gendered subjectivities at the outer edge of the global financial system. Through training programs that often accompany microloans, MFIs encourage clients to identify as working mothers who are primary caregivers for their children, but are also engaged in productive work through microenterprise or waged work. This identity serves MFIs—and global finance more broadly—by leveraging motherhood …

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials
“No Limits”—the annual student conference we share with the WGS Programs at UNK and UNO—returns to UNL! We invite proposals from undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates on any topic from any discipline related to women’s issues, lives, histories or cultures; feminism; or women’s and gender studies. Creative writing, visual arts, film, music, performances, workshops, and academic papers are all welcome. Proposals for individual presentations or premade panels are accepted.
While papers and panels can address a variety of themes, this year’s keynote speaker is Shireen Ghorbani. A UNL alum, Ghorbani earned her MA in Communication Studies with a specialization …

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Educational And Disciplinary Backgrounds Of American Librarians, 1950-2015, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Young-In Kim
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Discussions of diversity in American librarianship usually focus on gender or ethnicity, but historical studies also show a lack of diversity in educational and disciplinary backgrounds. Librarians traditionally hail from the humanities, especially English and history. But as current educational attention shifts to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, are librarians reflecting this change? Anonymized data from ALA-accredited graduate programs from the last five years was collected, coded, and classified to determine librarians’ educational and disciplinary backgrounds and in what ways, if any, they differ from the past 65 years and from the contemporary U.S. general population. Unsurprisingly, we …

Puerto Rico: One Year After Hurricane Maria, Center For Puerto Rican Studies
Puerto Rico: One Year After Hurricane Maria, Center For Puerto Rican Studies
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
September 20, 2018 marked a year since hurricane Maria wrought havoc on the island of Puerto Rico. Though the media has reported the crisis in a myriad of ways–for better or worse–our intention here is to provide a timeline of the major occurrences in the aftermath, a meta-analysis of the media’s coverage of the disaster, and an updated account of the exodus of people. The island continues to suffer from a tenuous electric grid, ruined infrastructure, and financial bankruptcy a year after the hurricane; the increase in migratory numbers reflects the limitations that many continue to face on the island. …

Student Attitudes Toward Sex Offender Policies And Laws In An Era Of High Profile Sex Crimes In The News, Amber Bennett
Student Attitudes Toward Sex Offender Policies And Laws In An Era Of High Profile Sex Crimes In The News, Amber Bennett
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This is a study looking at the attitudes that undergraduate college students taking introductory sociology and criminology courses have toward sex offender policies and laws such as community notification, residence restrictions, and the registry system. Voluntary participants were also asked to look at the appropriateness of the punishment given to perpetrators in case studies based off real cases. Results showed that there are potential gender differences in the attitudes about appropriateness of notification and the registration of sex offenders. There were less favorable attitudes toward chemical and surgical castration. Further research should be done to look at different types of …
Substance Abuse Treatment In Prison Settings: A Systematic Review, Emilee Cline
Substance Abuse Treatment In Prison Settings: A Systematic Review, Emilee Cline
Psychology Capstone Projects
A significant relationship between criminal behavior and substance abuse exists, which leads to a large proportion of individuals in the prison system who meet criteria for a substance use disorder. This review compares empirically-supported treatments for substance use disorder to current substance abuse treatment programs offered in United States prisons. A review of current literature indicates that Therapeutic Communities are the most common form of substance abuse treatment provided, and often these are combined with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy groups. Special treatment considerations are provided based on the type of substance used, gender, and ethnicity. Empirically-supported treatments are currently being implemented by …

Andrews University Spiritual Master Plan, Andrews University
Andrews University Spiritual Master Plan, Andrews University
Public Documents
Updated Fall 2018. The Spiritual Master Plan of the University correlates with the University’s Strategic Plan, Strategic Initiative four “To ensure the strength of the spiritual heart of the campus.” The plan is founded within the recognition of a great controversy and the truth of God's plan for reconciliation. The Creator pursues His Creation and invites us into intimate relationship with himself. His pursuit of us invites us, in free will, to open the door to Him. In responding to God’s invitation, allowing His work in our life and following His way we gain a clear understanding of who God …
