The Complexity Of Canadian Anti-Communism, 1945-1967, Ian Muller
The Complexity Of Canadian Anti-Communism, 1945-1967, Ian Muller
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation argues that the history of anti-communism in English Canada between 1945 and 1967 is more diverse and complicated than traditionally acknowledged. Often dispersed throughout the scholarship as elements of other Cold War topics, including espionage, state surveillance, and policing, anti-communism is the central subject of this investigation. A series of case studies are used to analyze individual encounters with the state and civic engagement with the domestic threat of communism. The unique politico-cultural approach of this dissertation will bolster Canada’s Cold War historiography by investigating both public and private manifestations of anti-communism.
The intersections of public safety, the …
Arriving Somewhere, Not Here: Exploring And Mapping The Relationship Between Border Enforcement And Migration By Boat In The Central Mediterranean Sea, 2006 To 2015, Kira Williams
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The European Union (EU) implemented a maritime interdiction network using search and rescue which interdicted at least 462,813 “illegal migrants” in the Central Mediterranean Sea between 2006 and 2015. This involved 15 discrete, militarised and semi-secret maritime interdiction operations (MIOs) at a minimum cost of 126.9 million 2014 Euros. In this dissertation, I will explore and map these operations and their geographies between 2006 and 2015.
First, and based on the given existence of the European Patrols Network, I examine how this network came into being in the first place. This serves to show that the EU purposely created regular …
Mitochondrial Dna Replacement: Moral And Halakhic Concerns, J. David Bleich
Mitochondrial Dna Replacement: Moral And Halakhic Concerns, J. David Bleich
Articles
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), transmitted from mother to child, have their own genetic code that may cause debilitating genetic diseases. To prevent such unfortunate occurrences, researchers have developed a process enabling them to completely replace an ovum’s mitochondria with mitochondria contributed by a donor. Children born by use of this method have genetic material from both the mitochondrial donor and the birth mother; they are “three-parent babies.” Resultant medical, ethical, legal and theological problems are obvious.
Moreover, this technology may pose significant risks to neonates born of such procedures. Certainly no person has the right to cause harm to a fellow …
Malleable Rationality, Stephanie Plamondon
Malleable Rationality, Stephanie Plamondon
Faculty Scholarship
In 1998, Christine Jolls, Cass Sunstein, and Richard Thaler published A Behavioral Approach to Law and Economics, one of the most important pieces of scholarship in decades. Their article famously proposes a departure from the neoclassical law and economics approach to legal analysis. Breaking from neoclassical law and economics’ rational actor construct, the authors apply empirical insights about human behavior to introduce the concept of a boundedly rational actor limited by cognitive constraints. Over the past two decades, the behavioral law and economics approach, with its focus on the boundedly rational actor, has contributed needed realism to legal analyses. Unfortunately, …
The Architecture Of Contract Innovation, Matthew Jennejohn
The Architecture Of Contract Innovation, Matthew Jennejohn
Faculty Scholarship
Contract law and the formal models of contract economics assume that agreements are fully customized. On the other hand, recent legal research highlights the role standardized terms play in contract design. Those lines of research overlook an important class of contracts between those extremes. Many contracts, such as the merger agreements studied here, are complex combinations of customized and standardized terms, and thereby achieve economies of both scale and scope. Such contracts are “mass customized,” to borrow a term from engineering research. This Article introduces a theoretical framework for understanding how mass customization of such complex agreements is achieved. It …

Factors Contributing To Juvenile Crime Leading To The Disparity Of The Risk Levels For Secure Detainment, Dawn Prystajko
Factors Contributing To Juvenile Crime Leading To The Disparity Of The Risk Levels For Secure Detainment, Dawn Prystajko
Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was to explore the factors that contributed to juvenile crime which in turn caused disparity in secure detainment among juveniles. This was based upon the alternate hypothesis that there is a noticeable disparity with minority youths being more securely detained opposed to majority youths. Therefore, the research was designed to examine raw data obtained from the Juvenile Justice Services Planner/JDAI Coordinator of the excel database of juvenile arrests/detainment.
The findings revealed several key points. The finding revealed that useable data extracted from the excel database was not able to neither agree with nor support …

A Bibliometric Analysis Of The Proceedings Of The Association For Educational Communications And Technology (Aect) For The 1979-2009 Period, Vandy L. Pacetti-Donelson
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional journal analysis for the identification of disciplines is limited in developing areas of study due to the lack of journals specific to that area of study. Identifying knowledge domains worthy of study for the identification of developing disciplines has been difficult.
Conferences are at the forefront of building knowledge in scientific communities, particularly in technology related sectors, but less than 10% of conference proceedings are available in conventional knowledge databases. As a result, conference proceedings as a previously unconsidered knowledge domain, may provide the knowledge domain worthy of analysis to identify developmental and incremental change within developing areas of …

Larry Finch's Memphis: Race, Basketball And The City, 1967-1997, Keith Brian Wood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
At the center of the 1973 Memphis State Tigers run to the national championship game lies Larry Finch, whose basketball career spanned a period of profound change in the city of Memphis. This study seeks to examine how the community, both black and white, used basketball to construct an identity for Memphis. By examining Memphis basketball at the high school, collegiate, and professional level in the 1970s and 1980s, a more nuanced understanding of race relations in the city can be achieved. This study also examines how basketball forged black pride, black manhood, and black community during these years in …
James Baldwin On The Question Of The Identities Of Americans And The Black Muslim Movement, Minzhao Liu
James Baldwin On The Question Of The Identities Of Americans And The Black Muslim Movement, Minzhao Liu
Outstanding Gateway Papers
One of the tactics the director Raoul Peck employed to make the I Am Not Your Negro documentary so powerful is the juxtaposition of violence against the black population in the 1960s and the brutalities taking place right now. He reveals on a more profound level the wretchedness of the current racial situation and the lack of real change. Peck’s film is built on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House. Baldwin’s treatment of the racial issue is uniquely interrogative, demanding a clear picture of the reality of both the environment and individuals’ identities. This principle of digging for …

Hygge & Lykke: Good Old Danish Enclosures Or Gates To A Brave New World?, Poul Houe
The Bridge
every year since becoming a Danish expat some forty-five years ago, I’ve spent part of each summer in Denmark. 2017 was no exception, but unlike previous years, this time I reflected explicitly on something most Danes probably take for granted or don’t pay much attention to: their country’s global reputation as the hyggeligste and lykkeligste place on earth (although Denmark came second to Norway in the global happiness rankings in 2017).1 Denmark’s reputation as the happiest (lykkeligste) place on earth is increasingly matched by the claim that it harbors the coziest (hyggeligste) culture imaginable. Many observers and commentators have credited …
Danish Creativity And Resilience In The Face Of Adversity, Delane Ingalls Vanada
Danish Creativity And Resilience In The Face Of Adversity, Delane Ingalls Vanada
The Bridge
Danish people are known for being innovative thinkers. They are independent, willing to take risks, able to stand up for their thoughts and beliefs, daring enough to commit themselves without fear of failure, and deeply trusting of each other. They are hardworking, flexible, and intellectual (Nordic Reach 2008). This is the stuff of creativity and the dispositions that support it, according to current research on the psychology of creativity (Piirto 2001). As the granddaughter of Jens Peder Jensen, a Danish immigrant who homesteaded in South Dakota in 1907, my life was shaped by the influence of our close family in …
From Ærø To Iowa: Documenting The Journey Of Danish Immigrants To Audubon And Shelby Counties In Iowa, Cynthia Larsen Adams
From Ærø To Iowa: Documenting The Journey Of Danish Immigrants To Audubon And Shelby Counties In Iowa, Cynthia Larsen Adams
The Bridge
The island of Ærø lies southwest of Copenhagen, in the Baltic Sea. Just south of the city of Odense, it is connected to the mainland by ferries. Between 1850 and 1920, nearly two thousand of Ærø’s residents decided to immigrate to the United States. When the first emigrants left Ærø the island had three major port towns—Marstal, Ærøskøbing, and Søby. Marstal was well known for its shipbuilding, which made it a local economic power base, while Ærøskøbing was the chief town and primary port for ferry traffic. Aside from sailors, ship’s captains, and shipbuilders, most of the island’s residents were …
Integration Challenges And Langkær Gymnasium, Nete Schmidt
Integration Challenges And Langkær Gymnasium, Nete Schmidt
The Bridge
Denmark used to be a fairly homogenous country where stereotypes of homogenous Nordic-ness could be happily and easily applied. Immigrants, often seasonal farmworkers, were invariably white. A young woman named Stefania was one of the many Poles who came to Lolland-Falster in the years 1893–1929 to work in the sugar beet fields in order to send money back to her family. She was thirteen when she arrived, with fake papers. At that time, Danish farmers and squires often hired young Polish women to do the most difficult work in the fields—weeding and harvesting the sugar beets. At the time, this …

“The Important Fact Is That I Always Felt Danish”: Preserving Ethnic Memory In Virginia Sorensen’S Mormon Novels, Sarah C. Reed
The Bridge
American author Virginia Sorensen (1912–91) grew up a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Manti, Utah, in Sanpete Valley, a place known as “Little Denmark” because it was a major center for the Danish immigrant community in Utah. In 1956 she described her hometown like this: even now if you go to see the fine white Mormon Temple that dominates the landscape night and day you will likely be shown about the grounds by somebody with a Danish name, perhaps even with a Danish accent. he will tell you about the famous spiral staircases in …

On the Saturday morning of the fortieth anniversary conference of the Danish American heritage Society, translator Michael Goldman gave a talk in which he interspersed readings from his translations of five accomplished Danish authors with his personal recollections and anecdotes. The texts he read included the first major publication of Benny Andersen’s poetry in english translation; the first english translations of Cecil Bødker’s adult novels Stories about Tacit and The Water Farm; the first ever book publication in english of Knud Sørensen’s Farming Dreams, a selection of poetry about the decline of family farms in the latter half of the …
In-Situ Calibration Of Underwater Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometer For Simple Dissolved Gases, Samuel Gartzman
In-Situ Calibration Of Underwater Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometer For Simple Dissolved Gases, Samuel Gartzman
Open Access Master's Theses
The Underwater Mass Spectrometer (UMS) provides unprecedented resolution and measurement detail for volatile compounds, including dissolved gases. However, interpretation of the measurements requires attention to several instrumental and environmental effects. We have developed a new calibration method to measure and correct for the influence of hydrostatic pressure, instrument internal temperature, electronic noise, sample temperature, water vapor, and external water temperature changes. We use an in-situ calibration method that samples continuously from a dissolved gas standard; the UMS and in-situ calibration were twice deployed on a submersible tow vehicle to capture profiles throughout the euphotic zone. The primary atmospheric gases – …
Feminism And Fashion Of The Twentieth Century: A Material Culture Study, Miranda Dicenzo
Feminism And Fashion Of The Twentieth Century: A Material Culture Study, Miranda Dicenzo
Open Access Master's Theses
While feminist literature clearly states the connection between clothing and feminism, there is a lack of material culture analysis to support the connection. This research utilizes material culture analysis—in this case, artifacts such as photographs, garments, and advertisements—to connect the ideology of feminism to its tangible and visible representation. Many fashion histories describe the period in which a garment was popular but offer little explanation about its corresponding political and social importance. This study includes histories of twentieth-century women’s movements and correlating fashion culminating in an exhibition to bridge the gap between scholarly research from varying fields.
The exhibition, based …
Evaluating The Effects Of Attitudes On Health-Seeking Behavior Among A Network Of People Who Inject Drugs, Ayako Miura
Evaluating The Effects Of Attitudes On Health-Seeking Behavior Among A Network Of People Who Inject Drugs, Ayako Miura
Open Access Master's Theses
The transmission of HIV/AIDS remains a great concern among people who inject drugs (PWIDs) in the United States. PWIDs are often embedded in a unique HIV/AIDS risk network via the shared use of drug equipment and risky sexual behavior. However, the characteristics of PWIDs in risk networks present challenges in a collection of network data resulting in limited studies of these networks of PWIDs. Our study employed causal inference methods applied to an observational study with dissemination to assess attitudes toward HIV/AIDS risk among PWIDs and their effect on health-seeking behaviors.
We used data from the Social Factors and HIV …
Attitudes And Behavior For Sustainable Team Performance, Md. Hasan Shahriar Simanto
Attitudes And Behavior For Sustainable Team Performance, Md. Hasan Shahriar Simanto
Open Access Master's Theses
As climate change in conjunction with the fourth wave of industrialization necessitates the world to move toward a sustainable future, research needs to focus on the intertwined connection between team work and sustainability. Currently, it is unknown whether teams that are successful at accomplishing sustainability-related tasks have different team composition than the teams who are not. This research explored the composition of teams performing sustainability-related tasks in regard to the individuals’ pro-environmental attitude, individuals’ self-reported pro-environmental behavior, individuals’ pro-environmental identity and team cohesion. Data was collected on real-world teams at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, which is a …
Grungewave: The Authenticity Of Neo-Tribes, Elizabeth Beasley
Grungewave: The Authenticity Of Neo-Tribes, Elizabeth Beasley
Open Access Master's Theses
Neo-tribes are characterized by fragmented identities, noncommittal membership, fascination with style and image, and social connections between members. They are often confused with subcultures due to sharing characteristics with subcultures. This has resulted in the authenticity of neo-tribes to be questioned. The confusion between neo-tribes and subcultures could be from the lack of detailed study on the use of apparel and style in neo-tribe identity. Previous studies on neo-tribes have incorporated the visual of apparel and style, however; these studies do not focus on the logistics of identity creation and authenticity through apparel and style of its members.
This study …
Hanky Panky: The History And Cultural Impact Of The Hanky Code, J. Raúl Cornier
Hanky Panky: The History And Cultural Impact Of The Hanky Code, J. Raúl Cornier
Open Access Master's Theses
For centuries, homosexual men and women incorporated ways of covertly communicating sexual orientation and/or sexual identity into behavior, language, and dress. In the twentieth century, a series of embedded sartorial codes used by queer men communicated sexual orientation and availability. As fashion and representations of masculinity changed, so did the use of various clothing items to represent distinct sartorial codes for communicating same-sex desire.
One such sartorial code, known as the hanky code, was used by queer men in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. The hanky code consisted of the placement of a colored bandana in one’s rear …

Perspectives From Select Women Working In Alaskan Commercial Fisheries, Berenice Yang Gonzalez
Open Access Master's Theses
Women have a long history of being actively involved in fisheries worldwide. Despite this fact, the popular image of fishers still assumes a male identity. An understudied yet important factor is women’s involvement in the commercial fishing beyond the family unit. This research was exploratory in scope, taking a thematic analysis approach, which allowed for the identification of patterns and themes within the qualitative data. Through eighteen interviews with women who have experience working in various sectors and segments of the Alaskan commercial fisheries, this thesis identifies: some of the women’s roles; the unique challenges that women face to break …

Photography And Mourning: Excavating Memories Of My Great-Grandmother, Eva Weiner
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper explores how photographs have affected mourning processes in the past and how photo-technology may be able to change the way in which we mourn in the future. It includes an overview of the history of post-mortem photography and discusses the perspectives of well-known media theorists such as Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag. It engages with psychologists by including their perspectives on the effect that photographs have on the mourning process. A project was created to investigate how photo-technology can affect the bereaved. The project places photographs of a mother into pictures of her children taken after she had …

California As A “Blue-Print’ For Progressive Immigration Reform?: Uncovering Racial Liberalism To Expose Reconfigured Anti-Migrant Hegemony, Edith Jaicel Ortega
Scripps Senior Theses
Using the frames of analysis and language of political whiteness and anti-migrant hegemony, this paper examines the narrative of liberal immigration reformers transforming California’s political landscape within the period of 1994 to 2017. Taken as case studies the following articles of legislation are analyzed: Proposition 187 in 1994, the California Dream Act in 2010, the Trust Act in 2014, up to the present Senate Bill 54 in 2017. The paper finds that while California has experienced a recognizable shift in racial liberalism in rhetoric and legislation, its overall policy continues to work within the framework of anti-migrant hegemony that functions …
