What Type Of Training Predicts Adherence To Cbt-I Among Professionals Specializing In The Treatment Of Insomnia?, Mark D. Delguercio

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study explored the relationship between certain educational and professional variables that influence the adherence to empirically supported practices in cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). The variables of interest included the practitioner’s level of training as measured by the number of hours of advanced training in CBT-I, the total number of hours practicing CBT-I out of the total annual clinical practice hours, and the total number of years practicing CBT-I. The final variable of interest was treatment preference and practice knowledge. The study used a one-time, cross-sectional, web-based survey. The participants consisted of 165 mental health and medical professionals of …

Max Neuhaus, R. Murray Schafer, And The Challenges Of Noise, Megan Elizabeth Murph Jan 2018

Max Neuhaus, R. Murray Schafer, And The Challenges Of Noise, Megan Elizabeth Murph

Theses and Dissertations--Music

In this dissertation, I analyzed Max Neuhaus’s (1939-2009) and R. Murray Schafer’s (b. 1932) commentary and work regarding noise, its control, and its relationship with the environment from the 1960 to the 1980s. Both Neuhaus and Schafer as well as those more directly involved with noise abatement research and policy were responding to the challenges and possibilities that noise posed in the latter twentieth century. In this project, I delved into these substantial links and argued that responding to and engaging with noise abatement policies was a key impetus to much of their work, which scholarship has yet to critically …

"Think Of The Children!”: Gender And Sexuality In Nickelodeon Cart And Designoons, Rebecca Grenier Jan 2018

"Think Of The Children!”: Gender And Sexuality In Nickelodeon Cart And Designoons, Rebecca Grenier

Whittier Scholars Program

The world of television cart and designoons has historically been, and largely remains, a space dominated by stories of straight male characters. Cart and designoons are written about boys, for boys, and even as live-action television is making dedicated strides toward on-screen gender equity, these animated programs continue to fall short. At least, that’s the theory. ‘Think of the Children!’: Gender and Sexuality in Nickelodeon Cart and designoons examines the amount and quality of representation of genders and sexualities in five culturally-significant cart and designoons that premiered on children’s television network Nickelodeon between 1991 and 2001: Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, SpongeBob …

Honest Or Excluded? A Gender Analysis Of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act And Chicago City Council Defendants, Juliet S. Sorensen Jan 2018

Honest Or Excluded? A Gender Analysis Of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act And Chicago City Council Defendants, Juliet S. Sorensen

Texas A&M Law Review

This article analyzes two corruption data sets through the lens of gender: defendants convicted under the criminal anti-bribery provisions of the Foreign Corruption Practices Act, and defendants convicted of federal anti-corruption crimes while serving on the Chicago City Council. In both instances, the data points to a much larger number of convictions of men than women. While a single cause is difficult to pinpoint, perhaps the most compelling explanation is that social norms associated with gender provide women with fewer opportunities for corruption. By contrast, the homophily of patronage networks, long cited as breeding grounds for corruption, has for generations …

Muslim Veiled Women And Religious Discrimination: A Strength Perspective, Aishath Shizleen Jan 2018

Muslim Veiled Women And Religious Discrimination: A Strength Perspective, Aishath Shizleen

Theses : Honours

The word ‘Islamophobia’ has gained and continues to gain wider currency in both the academic and public sphere. In the recent years, there has been an increase in literature focusing on Muslims and their experiences living in Western societies. It has been established that religious discrimination impacts negatively on self-esteem, mental wellbeing and one’s sense of identity. However, there is little research focusing on Muslim veiled women in particular even though it has been established that people who are visibly Muslim are more vulnerable to religious discrimination. This phenomenological study explored the lived experience of Muslim veiled women from South …

Infusing Data Campus-Wide To Drive Institutional Change, Meridith Wentz, Amanda Brown, Jeff Sweat

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

As tuition rates for higher education rise, universities are under increased pressure from internal and external stakeholders to document outcomes such as graduation rates. To do so, higher education institutions must use data effectively. This paper examines the University of Wisconsin-Stout’s (UW-Stout) strategies for data use in the institutional planning process. UW-Stout, a recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2001, continues to use the Baldrige framework and criteria, as well as the balanced scorecard, to gather data and help the institution make data-driven positive changes.

Introduction: "Ain’T It Evil To Live Backwards?": A Hip Hop Perspective Of Religion, Travis T. Harris, Cassandra D. Chaney

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

Historically, Black religion has been the cornerstone of the African experience in America. Due to the "peculiar institution” of slavery" and the ways this institutional residue still affect the lives of slave descendants, Hip Hop provides a forum to simultaneously acknowledge similarities and highlight differences. What scholars of religion and Hip Hop studies have revealed are the ways in which the effectiveness and our very understanding of “religion” changes when we bring Hip Hop in to the mix.

The issue of sexual assault has garnered widespread attention in recent years, as is evident by the growing number of high-profile cases and mainstream social movements. With this increasingly bright spotlight, it is no surprise that The University of Akron has interest in improving the sexual violence education programs offered to students. In 2015, the university conducted a survey to gather information on the campus climate surrounding sexual assault. Shaping The Religiosity Of Chinese University Students: Science Education And Political Indoctrination, Miao Li, Yun Lu, Fenggang Yang Jan 2018

Shaping The Religiosity Of Chinese University Students: Science Education And Political Indoctrination, Miao Li, Yun Lu, Fenggang Yang

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

Our study examined the respective relationships between two components of higher education in mainland China—science education and political indoctrination—and the religiosity of university students. Using a cross-sectional, representative sample of about 1700 college students in Beijing, we found first that students studying natural/applied sciences were less likely to perceive Protestantism, Catholicism, and Islam as plausible and less likely to have supernatural belief, relative to students in humanities/social sciences. In addition, the more students positively evaluated the political education courses—which indicates students’ acceptance of political indoctrination—the less likely they reported Protestantism and Catholicism as being plausible. Nevertheless, neither science education nor …

Constitutive Memories Of City Space: Rhetorics Of Civil Rights Memory In Detroit’S Urban Landscape, Scott Mitchell Jan 2018

Constitutive Memories Of City Space: Rhetorics Of Civil Rights Memory In Detroit’S Urban Landscape, Scott Mitchell

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation examines public memories of civil rights injustice and resistance as constitutive rhetorics of urban culture and spatiality for the city of Detroit. By studying the city of Detroit as it navigates an ongoing period of dramatic change and redevelopment, this study demonstrates how material manifestations of memory become the constitutive forces that define what many describe as “Detroit’s heart and soul.” This project illustrates the embedded cultural logics produced from sites of public memory, thereby arguing city spaces as locations bound to their legacies and beholden to material and symbolic consequences of their past. This dissertation proceeds through …

Individualized Learning Plans And Performance Measurement, Management, And Improvement In Premedical Post Baccalaureate Education, Leah Michelle Robinson Jan 2018

Individualized Learning Plans And Performance Measurement, Management, And Improvement In Premedical Post Baccalaureate Education, Leah Michelle Robinson

Wayne State University Dissertations

Medical performance, what a physician can do accurately, repeatedly, and consistently is more significant than what they know. “Regardless of training, experience, or education, roughly 7% to 28% of medical trainees will require remediation in the form of an individualized learning plan to achieve competence” (Guerrasio, Garrity, & Aagaard, 2014, p. 352). Very little research on remediation for medical students, trainees, fellows, or practicing physicians exists in the literature. The available research focuses on specific skill attainment but lacks a standard methodology for identifying 1) those who are not competent and, 2) remediation strategies necessary to close deficiencies (Hauer, Ciccone, …

Mediation Capacity Building With Liberian Diaspora Communities: Some Observations, Maria R. Volpe, Bradley L. Roth Jan 2018

Mediation Capacity Building With Liberian Diaspora Communities: Some Observations, Maria R. Volpe, Bradley L. Roth

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The focus of this article will be on elucidating an initiative that has involved multiple partnerships, sensitivity to cultural differences, local-global interactions, work with diaspora communities, adaptation of mediation training programs, dedicated volunteerism, and concerns about sustainability. Central to all of the activities is an explicit resolve by the mediators involved to understand and appropriately respond to the parties' contexts when providing mediation expertise. John Paul Lederach has referred to this method as a mix of prescriptive and elicitive approaches. In sum, the trainers used their expertise as both mediators and trainers to be conscious of and sensitive to the …

Indirect And Invisible Organizational Costs: Making Informed Decisions About Litigation And Settlement, Michaela Keet, Heather Heavin, Shawna Sparrow Jan 2018

Indirect And Invisible Organizational Costs: Making Informed Decisions About Litigation And Settlement, Michaela Keet, Heather Heavin, Shawna Sparrow

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

When anticipating litigation costs for organizations, lawyers and clients tend to focus on direct litigation costs, while overlooking the impact of process costs. In making an evaluation whether to litigate or settle, we assert that lawyers should account for indirect organizational costs within any cost-benefit analysis. This article reviews organizational literature and empirical studies in order to present a template of three spheres of impact: business opportunity, reputation, and organizational psychology. With greater awareness, organizational lawyers can identify and weigh these costs, with the objective of helping their clients better understand the financial impact of dispute resolutions for the organization. …

Volunteer Leader Behavior Of Doctors Within A Large Health Care Provider Association, Charles M. Fischer Jan 2018

Volunteer Leader Behavior Of Doctors Within A Large Health Care Provider Association, Charles M. Fischer

Theses and Dissertations

The health care expenditures in the United States are nearly 18% of the GNP and the industry employs over 12 million workers nationwide. Health care doctor associations play an important role in determining policy, research, cost, access, quality, and methods of delivery within the industry. An association’s success is dependent upon competent leadership, from both salaried executive staff and volunteer member leaders. Assessing and analyzing preferred leader behavior in a prominent health care association is, therefore, the subject of this study. Evaluating leadership styles and behaviors can reveal where gaps in leadership skills and training might exist. Using the DISC …
