Financial Socialization Of College Students: Domain-General And Domain-Specific Perspectives, Ji Hyun Kim, Julia C. Torquati Jan 2018

Financial Socialization Of College Students: Domain-General And Domain-Specific Perspectives, Ji Hyun Kim, Julia C. Torquati

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

This study investigated the association of domain-general and domain-specific parenting practices with college students’ financial attitudes and behaviors. Data came from a survey of college students (n = 585, 156 males) aged 19–32 attending a Midwestern University. Parents’ financial behaviors significantly predicted college students’ financial attitudes. Path analysis indicated that college students’ financial attitudes mediated the association between their perceptions of parents’ financial behaviors and their own financial behaviors. Parental avoidance of financial conversation was inversely associated with college students’ financial attitudes, and parental disclosure of financial information was positively associated with college students’ financial attitudes. Family communication pattern significantly …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Programs aiming to help parents are often challenged in analyzing open-ended survey questions from large samples. This article presents qualitative findings collected from 1,287 participants with a child 5 years of age or younger who completed the program evaluation for the Co-Parenting for Successful Kids online program, a 4-hour education course developed by the University of Nebraska Extension. Qualitative content analysis revealed that participants found the program useful for improving their co-parenting communication skills. Participants suggested areas for improvement such as additional information for helping children cope, conflict resolution strategies, handling legal issues, and understanding how divorce impacts children based …

To What Extent Do The Objection To Confiscation Provisions In Part 6 Of The Criminal Property Confiscation Act 2000 (Wa) Protect The Family Home Of An 'Innocent Party' From Confiscation?, Joel Bond Jan 2018

To What Extent Do The Objection To Confiscation Provisions In Part 6 Of The Criminal Property Confiscation Act 2000 (Wa) Protect The Family Home Of An 'Innocent Party' From Confiscation?, Joel Bond

Theses : Honours

The Western Australian Government stated that the Criminal Property Confiscation Act 2000 (WA) (‘CPCA’) will provide ‘the strongest and most effective’ confiscation powers in the world.1 It was observed by the High Court that the CPCA has enabled a confiscation of property scheme that has a ‘significant impact upon personal and property rights.’2 Strong powers to fight crime are justified, but it is critical that these powers are used responsibly and that innocent parties are protected. This thesis considers the extent to which the objection to confiscation provisions in Part 6 of the CPCA (‘the protections’) operate to protect the …

A Few Criminal Justice Big Data Rules, Stephen E. Henderson Jan 2018

A Few Criminal Justice Big Data Rules, Stephen E. Henderson

Faculty Articles

As with most new things, the big data revolution in criminal justice has historic antecedents—indeed, a 1965 Presidential Commission called for some of the same data analysis that police departments and courts are today developing and implementing. But there is no doubt we are on the precipice of a criminal justice data revolution, and it is a good time to take stock and to begin developing guidelines so that, as much as possible, criminal justice systems might reap the benefits and avoid the pitfalls of this newly data-centric world. In that spirit, I propose ten high-level rules to guide criminal …

La Liberté Et Les Deux Visages De La France : De La DéLéGitimation De La DéMocratie Franc̦Aise, Michael Kolodziejski

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This work explores the contradictions contained in the French ideals of democracy and their application to blacks in Africa and the French Caribbean. From the philosophical eruptions of French democratic ideals during the 18th century through the flux and reflux between Republican aspirations and monarchy during the 19th century that followed the proclamation of the Rights of Man of 1789 and the subsequent enshrinement of the Republic, France’s concomitant dehumanization of Blacks through the practice of slavery and colonialism has been a matter of hypocrisy. This hypocrisy would continue through the “decolonization” of francophone Africa during the 20th century and …

Intergrating The Fruin Los Into The Multi-Objective Ant Colony System, Tirdad Kiafar Jan 2018

Intergrating The Fruin Los Into The Multi-Objective Ant Colony System, Tirdad Kiafar

Dissertations

Building evacuation simulation provides the planners and designers an opportunity to analyse the designs and plan a precise, scenario specific instruction for disaster times. Nevertheless, when disaster strikes, the unexpected may happen and many egress paths may get blocked or the conditions of evacuees may not let the execution of emergency plans go smoothly. During disaster times, effective route-finding methods can help efficient evacuation process, in which the directors are able to react to the sudden changes in the environment. This research tries to integrate the highly accepted human dynamics methods proposed by Fruin into the Ant-Colony optimisation route-finding method. …

According to the 2015 Bureau of Labor Statistics, nationally, students with disabilities are less likely to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and more likely to be unemployed.1 At VCU, these students are served by the Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity Office (SAEO), which currently has only two case managers for 1500 registered students while the Association for Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD) recommends an individual case load of 350 or fewer students. While these students attend New Student Orientation, there are currently no programs or sessions specifically designed to address their needs. Hunger In The Land Of Plenty: Local Responses To Food Insecurity In Iowa, Gabrielle E. Roesch-Mcnally, Jacqueline Ann Nester, Andrea D. Basche, Eric Christianson, Emily Zimmerman

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Story County (estimated population 92,406 in 2013) lies in the heart of central Iowa, a state renowned for its remarkable agricultural productivity. Iowa leads all states for production of corn, soybean, and hogs. Revenues from agricultural products in Iowa total more than $30 billion annually according the 2012 Agricultural Census (USDA-NASS 2014). This productivity stems from a favorable natural and political environment. The temperate climate, productive soils, and gentle topography are ideal for our production system of commodity agriculture facilitated by federal policies, which include subsidized crop insurance and commodity payments (Horrigan, Lawrence, and Walker 2002). Despite this productivity and …

Men, Masculinity And Perceptions Of Higher Education Sexual Violence Programming: A Qualitative Analysis, Merry M. Snyder Jan 2018

Men, Masculinity And Perceptions Of Higher Education Sexual Violence Programming: A Qualitative Analysis, Merry M. Snyder

Departmental Honors Projects

Research suggests that sexual assault on college campuses is very prevalent. Although institutions are taking measures towards prevention, social norms have left the role of men in addressing sexual violence under-examined. Through my two-part research, I examined the relationship between men and these systems. I first conducted interviews with Higher Education Professionals in the Upper Midwest to explore how the dominant forms of masculinity have played a role in campus programming. This research was concerned with how schools are engaging men on campus and addressing harmful forms of masculinity. The themes that emerged through these interviews provided the basis for …

The Italian American Community’S Responses To Discrimination During World War Two., Gillian P. Molland

Departmental Honors Projects

This research covers the treatment and internment of Italian American residents during the Second World War to lay bare infringements of civil rights by the United States Government. During this time, Italian American residents were subject to persecution in the form of job discrimination, censorship, detainment, and internment. The scholarly work surrounding the topic thus far primarily discussed the causes and details of Japanese internment, only referencing the treatment of Italian or German Americans. The research on the treatment of Italian American residents during the war centers around the idea of the secret history and try to understand what legislation …

The Controversial Passage Of Proposition 227, Erin E. Kinney Jan 2018

The Controversial Passage Of Proposition 227, Erin E. Kinney

Departmental Honors Projects

When Proposition 227 passed in 1998, it essentially ended a thirty-year program of bilingual education in California of students with limited English proficiency, and replaced it with a controversial, year-long, intensive English-immersion program. Paying close attention to how each side of the debate was framed in televised programming and local newspapers, this paper examines why such a controversial law was able to pass by popular ballot. After researching the popular opinions of the previous program of bilingual education as well as the narrative of the state concerning how it views its immigrant populations, with the children of Latin American immigrants …

Franz Boas And The Columbian Field Museum, Martin W. Peper Jan 2018

Franz Boas And The Columbian Field Museum, Martin W. Peper

Departmental Honors Projects

The Late Nineteenth Century was a period of major flux within the world of American anthropology. Two major centers of power had emerged within the nascent field. Federally sponsored anthropologists clashed with academic institutions, especially those associated with Harvard’s Frederic Ward Putnam. These two bodies found themselves at odds over methodological design and the theoretical frameworks supporting their research. These issues would span the breadth of anthropology as a field, but nowhere was it more visible than in the scope of museum studies. Public displays of anthropological thought were the most direct way that scholars were able to present their …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Online Self-Harm Support Forums: Examining Users’ Online Activities During Self-Harm Desistance Processes, Claudia Volpe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Non- suicidal self-injury, commonly referred to as NSSI, is defined as the damage of one’s body tissue through the practices of, but not limited to, cutting, burning, branding, bone-breaking, biting, hair pulling and head banging (Adler & Adler, 2011), without suicidal intent (Lewis & Mehrabkhani, 2016). Self-harm literature has primarily focused on persistence processes and NSSI-related online interaction in the maintenance of pro self-harm ideology and practice. Alternatively, this research will provide insight into desistance processes of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and related online interactions by conducting a virtual ethnography (Hine, 2000) of open, online spaces, consistent with the symbolic interactionist …

Certain but stable? A diachronic analysis of taxation in Ireland from 1970-2015

This paper explores the discursive development of taxation within budget speeches in Ireland from 1970 to 2015 by means of a corpus-assisted discourse analysis. We ask the following questions; how have discourses of taxation developed diachronically and what are the similarities and differences in the observable discourses? In answering these questions, this paper makes use of corpus linguistics, a methodological approach which utilises computational analysis of large bodies of text to draw statistically significant conclusions about word usage. It is expected, though not taken a priori, that …

Secular Authority: Economists In Irish Public Discourse, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke Jan 2018

Secular Authority: Economists In Irish Public Discourse, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

This paper explores how the authority of Economics Experts has developed over time in Ireland. The identity of ‘expert’ serves as a powerful authority device for an individual’s discourse (Montgomery 2008). Although the definition of who is considered an expert has become broader and more inclusive (Collins and Evans 2007), the authority derived from the label of expert is usually reserved for Contributory Experts (Collins, Evans, and Weinel 2016). This authority has traditionally allowed such experts to engage with society from a position of authority and prestige that is not afforded to other societal actors. Such authority has been acknowledged …

The Cambridge Handbook On The Law Of The Sharing Economy, Nestor M. Davidson, Michèle Finck, John Infranca

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This is a draft of the table of contents and introduction of the forthcoming Cambridge Handbook on the Law of the Sharing Economy (2018). The handbook grapples conceptually and practically with what the sharing economy – which includes entities ranging from large for- profit firms like Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, TaskRabbit, and Upwork to smaller, nonprofit collaborative initiatives – means for law, and how law, in turn, is shaping critical aspects of the sharing economy. Featuring a diverse set of contributors from multiple academic disciplines and countries, the book compiles the most important, up- to- date research on the regulation of …

Purifying The Sacred: How Hindu Nationalism Reshapes Environmentalism In Contemporary India, Owen Dunton Ellerkamp Jan 2018

Purifying The Sacred: How Hindu Nationalism Reshapes Environmentalism In Contemporary India, Owen Dunton Ellerkamp

Honors Papers

The transposition of the cultural, religious, and sacred onto physical geographies is practiced by humans everywhere as landscapes are canvases for meaning making and integral placeholders of histories. In the Indian context, this practice is distinct for several reasons. Scholars of Hindu traditions recognize that the place-oriented disposition and centrality of land to Hindu traditions and cultures is unprecedented and integral to identity formation in modern India. As India faces increasing environmental degradation, the preservation of “sacred geographies” is especially crucial to the identity of Hindu traditions. The rise of Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) political parties (e.g., the Bharatiya Janata Party …

Gettin’ It Right: Rethinking Policy, Revitalizing Schools, And Reforming The Experience For Young Men Of Color In Chicago’S Public Schools, Brian Cabral

Honors Papers

This study begins by locating the development of Social Justice High School (SOJO) in Chicago and examining the educational experiences of young Mexican and Mexican American men. Through scholarship by education policy and reform scholars that talk about issues of neoliberal practices and school policies in the Chicago Public School (CPS) network, an analysis of the implementation efforts of policies that focus on standardized testing and discipline at SOJO are examined. This research analyzes the student experience and development of these young men using the conceptual framework of socialization and social control. The top-down implementation of standardized testing and discipline …

Haunted By Solitude: Isolation And Communal Representation In Zanele Muholi's Archive, Michelle Marie Fikrig Jan 2018

Haunted By Solitude: Isolation And Communal Representation In Zanele Muholi's Archive, Michelle Marie Fikrig

Honors Papers

This paper focuses on contemporary South African photographer Zanele Muholi’s (b. 1972) extensive photographic archival project, Faces and Phases, which documents South Africa’s black queer community. The series exists not only as a book published in 2014, but as an exhibition that has been shown globally. In the introduction to their book of the Faces and Phases series Muholi states their goal as “[articulating] the collective pain [black lesbians] as a community experience” (emphasis mine). Yet the series, composed of over two hundred black and white portraits, is made up of photographs of individual black lesbians. This paper explores the …

The Language Of Sport: Understanding Chile And Chilenidad Through Marathon Races And Fútbol Games, Lilah Drafts-Johnson Jan 2018

The Language Of Sport: Understanding Chile And Chilenidad Through Marathon Races And Fútbol Games, Lilah Drafts-Johnson

Honors Papers

This project offers a new perspective for understanding the country and culture of Chile by examining the messages embedded in sport competitions. I will first detail the success of distance runner Manuel Plaza in his second-place finish at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, and analyze how Plaza’s success at an international competition was adopted and interpreted to represent the entrance of Chile into modern and Western society. I will then discuss the struggle between different sections of Chilean society to create and monopolize the master narrative of the events that took place following the military coup of 1973. This section …

"Forget-Me-Not": The Politics Of Memory, Identity, And Community In Armenian America, Hannah Marijke Kim Jan 2018

"Forget-Me-Not": The Politics Of Memory, Identity, And Community In Armenian America, Hannah Marijke Kim

Honors Papers

This project looks at how politicized identity and community was formed in Armenian America through the creation and dissemination of Armenian genocide memories. The Armenian genocide, which occurred in 1915, resulted in the mass dispersion of the Armenian people, and in great numbers to America. The traumatic genocidal experience, along with erasure by the Turkish government, has resulted in the genocide being the most seminal piece of Armenian community building and political organization. Most work done on the Armenian-American community and Armenian genocide focuses on the impact of non-recognition by the Turkish government. In my thesis, I seek to rediscover …

Comparing Two Thickened Cycles: A Generalization Of Spectral Inequalities, Hannah E. Pieper Jan 2018

Comparing Two Thickened Cycles: A Generalization Of Spectral Inequalities, Hannah E. Pieper

Honors Papers

Motivated by an effort to simplify the Watts-Strogatz model for small-world networks, we generalize a theorem concerning interlacing inequalities for the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacians of two graphs differing by a single edge. Our generalization allows weighted edges and certain instances of self loops. These inequalities were first proved by Chen et. al in [2] but our argument generalizes the simplified argument given by Li in [8].

The Terror Experts: Discourse, Discipline, And The Production Of Terrorist Subjects At A University Research Center, Liam Christopher Mclean Jan 2018

The Terror Experts: Discourse, Discipline, And The Production Of Terrorist Subjects At A University Research Center, Liam Christopher Mclean

Honors Papers

This thesis examines the production and circulation of discourses related to (counter)terrorism at a university-affiliated terrorism and security studies research center in eastern Massachusetts. Drawing on participant observation, documentary analysis, and interviews with faculty and students at the research center, I suggest that expert discourses of (counter)terrorism at the center traffic in an archetypal construction of the terrorist that I call the “depoliticized radical.” This construction locates the root of terrorism in individual morality and psychology, tending to abstract the terrorist from the political conditions in which they enact violence. I further propose that the depoliticized radical functions as a …

Women And Children First: American Magazine Image Depictions Of Japan And The Japanese, 1951-1960, Alexander Adorjan Somogyi

Honors Papers

By the close of the American Occupation of Japan in 1952, Japan was a sovereign nation, a lingering World War II menace, and much needed Cold War ally of the United States. American magazine print media imagery and advertising therefore had to erase its earlier wartime propaganda depictions of the Japanese while rebranding Japan as a harmless friend to the U.S. In the hundred years after Commodore Matthew Perry’s opening of Japan in 1853, American magazines have utilized several visual trends, stereotypes, and tropes in order to cast the Japanese as peaceful, simple, and eager followers of U.S. culture and …
