Of Levinas And Shakespeare: "To See Another Thus", Sandor Goodhart, Moshe Gold, Kent Lehnhof Mar 2018

Of Levinas And Shakespeare: "To See Another Thus", Sandor Goodhart, Moshe Gold, Kent Lehnhof

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Scholars have used Levinas as a lens through which to view many authors and texts, fields of endeavor, and works of art. Yet no book-length work or dedicated volume has brought this thoughtful lens to bear in a sustained discussion of the works of Shakespeare. It should not surprise anyone that Levinas identified his own thinking as Shakespearean. "The play’s the thing" for both, or put differently, the observation of intersubjectivity is. What may surprise and indeed delight all learned readers is to consider what we might yet gain from considering each in light of the other.

Comprising leading scholars …

Liberal Cynicism, Its Dangers, And A Cure, William H. Barnes Mar 2018

Liberal Cynicism, Its Dangers, And A Cure, William H. Barnes

Philosophy ETDs

Extreme Liberal Cynicism is a product of mourning, guilt, and the experience of powerlessness stemming from the trauma of holding liberal investments in a world in which they rarely flourish, in which they are perceived to have failed, and in which they are vulnerable to ideology critique. Consequently, the cynic is torn between liberal ideals and the obstacles to their success. This can compel the Liberal Cynic to extremes, fantasizing invulnerability through disavowing the efficacy of its constitutive ideals. This is achieved via a reified hopelessness which eclipses trauma, guilt, and disempowerment. Despite serving an immediately ameliorative purpose this leaves …

Degree In Religious Studies And Philosophy Gave Gwu Alumnus Foundation For Graduate School, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Several years before he came to Gardner-Webb University, Brian G. Chilton experienced doubt about his Christian beliefs. Before he could continue serving as a pastor, he had to prove the Bible’s reliability. “I left the ministry for seven years during which time I became fascinated with Christian apologetics,” shared the 2011 GWU alumnus. “My faith was greatly strengthened by studying the works of Josh McDowell, Lee Strobel, Gary Habermas, Ravi Zacharias, and William Lane Craig. In 2007, God called me back into the ministry in a vivid fashion by saving me from a horrible lightning storm. I knew God wasn’t …

Parallels Of Morality: Wilde And Nietzsche’S Challenge To Social Obligation, Amzie A. Dunekacke Mar 2018

Parallels Of Morality: Wilde And Nietzsche’S Challenge To Social Obligation, Amzie A. Dunekacke

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This thesis explores Irish author Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray in relation to a selection of texts by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. To demonstrate the similarities between Wilde and Nietzsche’s challenges to European morality, this work considers these themes, which are present in the ideologies of both Wilde and Nietzsche: the body and sensual pleasure, social construction, and the hypocrisy of altruism. Both radical thinkers castigate Platonic notions of the body as ignoble and weak, and they mock European propriety’s shyness of the body. In addition, Wilde and Nietzsche offer similar criticisms of social laws, adopting a …

Review: The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights And The Challenge Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan Mar 2018

Review: The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights And The Challenge Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan

Religion Faculty Publications

Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, the language of human rights has become a lingua franca among many jurists, philosophers, and theologians. But over the same period of time, the universalist aspirations of human rights language have also attracted myriad critics, both religious and secular. For these critics, the language of human rights isn’t sufficiently common to identify, discuss, and adjudicate moral and political issues. In The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Challenge of Religion, the rightly influential human rights scholar Johannes Morsink develops an argument that …

Comparison Of Workload For University Core Courses Taught In Regular Semester And Time-Compressed Term Formats, Lyndell Lutes, Randall Davies Mar 2018

Comparison Of Workload For University Core Courses Taught In Regular Semester And Time-Compressed Term Formats, Lyndell Lutes, Randall Davies

Faculty Publications

This study compared student workload and perceived value of coursework assigned for a matching set of semester and term general education courses at Brigham Young University. Statistically significant differences in workloads were found between most semester and term courses. While term workloads were slightly lighter in general, both could be called “university lite,” in that students did not spend the expected two hours outside of class per hour in class. Math and physics courses came closest to meeting the expected workloads, which tended to remain constant between semesters and terms. Differences in the value students reported for homework varied significantly …

Dr. Ashley Lowery, a dentist in Spindale, N.C., could have earned prerequisites for dental school most anywhere, but Gardner-Webb University offered her something other schools didn’t. “Gardner-Webb is like a family if you will allow it to be,” she reflected. “While the educational and religious side of GWU is extremely important, it is really more than that to me. It’s a place of happy memories and a time in life where I felt completely supported. The staff and professors will be there for you from your freshman days until graduation.”

The Eternal Body Of Man Is The Imagination: Imagining The Book Of Revelation Through The Eyes Of William Blake, Markus E. Locker Mar 2018

The Eternal Body Of Man Is The Imagination: Imagining The Book Of Revelation Through The Eyes Of William Blake, Markus E. Locker

Landas

This article explores the apocalyptic visions of the Book of Revelation through the lens of the English poet and visual artist William Blake. The author utilizes Blake's critique of religion as a hermeneutical key to decode the enigmatic message of the biblical text. The essay argues that John of Patmos addressed a church in tribulation where the Christian imagination—which Blake aligns with the Holy Ghost—was vanishing due to worldly rationality and the ideological pressures of the Roman imperial cult. This creeping rationality led to dangerous compromises with Satan. Ultimately, the paper demonstrates how Revelation employs an epistolary framework filled with …
