Pro-Secular? Luke's Relationship With Roman Imperial System And Culture, Peter Santandreu May 2018

Pro-Secular? Luke's Relationship With Roman Imperial System And Culture, Peter Santandreu

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

He has…rescued [us] from the hands of our enemies, [so that] without fear we might worship him in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
- Luke 1:74-75

This statement, spoken by Zechariah at the birth of John the Baptist, serves as a forecast of where the story of Jesus and his early community will end up. Acts 28:30-31 reports its accomplishment when, talking about Paul’s lodgings in Rome, it says, “He remained two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him, and with …

Michael Costanzo, A Genuine Mentor, Tim Madigan

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Where the priests feed the flock committed to them both by their word and by their example the people are preserved from many errors."
From Defense of the Catholic Priesthood by St. John Fisher (1525; translated by Philip Hallet, 1934)

Father Michael Costanzo was a man who wore his learning lightly. He was constantly reading and reflecting. I had many fascinating conversations with him over the years regarding his views on such figures as Edith Stein, Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, and Simone Weil, all of whose complete works …

American Proto-Zionism And The "Book Of Lehi": Recontextualizing The Rise Of Mormonism, Don Bradley May 2018

American Proto-Zionism And The "Book Of Lehi": Recontextualizing The Rise Of Mormonism, Don Bradley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although historians generally view early Mormonism as a movement focused on restoring Christianity to its pristine New Testament state, in the Mormon movement’s first phase (1827-28) it was actually focused on restoring Judaism to its pristine “Old Testament” state and reconstituting the Jewish nation as it had existed before the Exile.

Mormonism’s first scripture, “the Book of Lehi” (the first part of the Book of Mormon), disappeared shortly after its manuscript was produced. But evidence about its contents shows it to have had restoring Judaism and the Jewish nation to their pre-Exilic condition to have been one of its major …

The Prospective Influence Of Religiousness On Alcohol Use: What Role Do Perceived Norms Play?, Corey Todd Brawner May 2018

The Prospective Influence Of Religiousness On Alcohol Use: What Role Do Perceived Norms Play?, Corey Todd Brawner

Dissertations

Alcohol misuse is recognized as one of the most pressing health hazards for college students. Previous research has supported a protective relationship between religiousness and problematic alcohol use, but it is less clear what aspects of religiousness are protective and through what mechanisms its effect is exerted. The current study utilized a prospective design to accomplish three primary goals: (1) Delineate the protective effects of religious motivation and public participation on alcohol use and alcohol-related problems in a sample of undergraduates at a large public university in the southeastern United States, (2) determine whether effects were maintained long-term, and (3) …

Life Course Outcomes For Juveniles: Contact With The Criminal Justice System As A Turning Point, Dominique Tauffner Apr 2018

Life Course Outcomes For Juveniles: Contact With The Criminal Justice System As A Turning Point, Dominique Tauffner

Honors Projects

This research investigated the life course outcomes of respondents who have been arrested during adolescence. Although the creation of the juvenile justice system is relatively recent, only existing for 119 years, there is a need for data on the impact this system has on society. The pre-existing knowledge and literature on juvenile delinquency and the criminal justice system often fails to capture longitudinal data. Most scholars on this issue will discuss the immediate effects of things like incarceration and placement or what influences delinquency, ignoring the long-term consequences or life outcomes of those that have been arrested prior to 18. …

Losing The Battle; The Marginalization Of Javanese Compact Forms, Aris Munandar Apr 2018

Losing The Battle; The Marginalization Of Javanese Compact Forms, Aris Munandar

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the contact situation with Indonesian, the standard variety of Javanese in Yogyakarta is experiencing an incipient shift. The shift is indicated by the shrinking domain of use, and the degradation of speakers’ proficiency. It also reveals some ongoing changes in its structure, observable in the tendency of the younger generation to use particular elements different to those used by grandparent and parent generations. This article examines unique patterns of Javanese morphosyntax by focusing on the suffix -a, infix -um-, -in-, and confix ka-an, on the basis of utterances recorded from authentic speech events involving speakers of different generations. The …

The Implementation Of Religious Literacy Curricula In American Public Schools, Natalie Lemay Apr 2018

The Implementation Of Religious Literacy Curricula In American Public Schools, Natalie Lemay

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Religious literacy is defined as a basic level of knowledge and understanding of major world religions and beliefs. Most of the literature on the subject agrees that students benefit from exposure to other religions, both civically and mentally. The Religious Freedom Institute of the Newseum has created a curriculum in order to bring nonpartisan religious education back into public schools with the goal of increasing tolerance for communities of different faiths. The curriculum, titled the Georgia 3Rs project, is being piloted in Georgia, a predominantly Christian evangelical state. In my thesis, I study the effectiveness of prior examples of religious …

Religious Leadership And Political Affiliation On A Secular Midwestern Campus, Kristy Atanasov Apr 2018

Religious Leadership And Political Affiliation On A Secular Midwestern Campus, Kristy Atanasov

Honors Projects

This qualitative study explores the connection between religion and political affiliation in campus organizations from the perspective of the leaders of religious organizations on a secular Midwestern university. Interviews with ten leaders of Christian, Jewish, or Muslim organizations were utilized in gathering data. The current literature on campus religion is rarely qualitative, and fails to address specific campus religious organizations and their leaders. The results of the study found that religious affiliation is not a highly contributing factor in political affiliation, as previous quantitative studies have indicated. Ethnic, religious, and racial marginalization emerged as more significant indicators of political affiliation …

Destabilizing Domesticity: The Construction And Collective Memory Of Jewish-American Womanhood From 1900 To 1950, Mara Steinitz Apr 2018

Destabilizing Domesticity: The Construction And Collective Memory Of Jewish-American Womanhood From 1900 To 1950, Mara Steinitz

History Honors Projects

Using cookbooks, newspaper articles about consumer protests, and children’s historical fiction books, this project explores the construction and collective memory of Jewish-American womanhood in the first half of the Twentieth century through a lens of food. Jewish-American women had intersectional identities and lived lives that contained a complexity of actions that could be both private and domestic and public and gender norm nonconforming. However, Jewish-American children’s historical fiction fails to encompass this complexity or accurately teach the women’s stories to the next generation by placing female characters into a binary of public or private.

American Muslim Women: Feminism, Equality, And Difference, Amber Coniglio

Honors Theses

American Muslim women face constant surveillance, stress, and pressure to change and adapt to mainstream society. They are reconciling their multifaceted identities with better understanding of sacred text as well as solidifying their desired gender roles within their communities. They are challenging norms and creating new spaces for themselves within the ummah as well as the United States. American Muslim women find courage, strength, and autonomy through Islamic …

Reinhold Niebuhr's Christian Nation: The Theology Of White Supremacy In Liberal White American Christianity, Sophia Driscoll Gamber Apr 2018

Reinhold Niebuhr's Christian Nation: The Theology Of White Supremacy In Liberal White American Christianity, Sophia Driscoll Gamber

Religious Studies Honors Papers

Reinhold Niebuhr’s Christian Nation explores the relationships between white supremacy, American nation-building, and Protestantism. The argument operates on two levels. It is firstly concerned with unpacking the development of white supremacy as a cultural theology that evolved alongside the American project from European colonization to the present day, one which infiltrates all aspects of the American project and provides its unjust racial hierarchies with divine justification. To this end, the project then turns to an analysis of the development of American nationalism and discusses the ways in which we have cultivated a heroic American mythology that undergirds both white supremacy …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (an artifact; a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. The problem is that the object of ideological desire is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Historical Archaeologist Mark P. Leone attempted to locate such an object several times while conducting archaeological investigations into historical Mormonism, Mormon historical ecology, and technologies employed by Mormons in the arid American West. It is posited here that the object of Mormon ideological desire in the archaeological record within …
