The Sovereign Nation Of Hawai'i: Resistance In The Legacy Of "Aloha 'Oe", Evelyn T. Chow
The Sovereign Nation Of Hawai'i: Resistance In The Legacy Of "Aloha 'Oe", Evelyn T. Chow
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
The song “Aloha ‘Oe” is celebrated throughout the nation of Hawai’i as a representation of traditional Hawaiian culture, written over a century ago by the last reigning monarch of the islands, Queen Lili’uokalani. Though the song was initially composed as a mele ho’oipoipo (love song), over the years it has been socially, politically, and culturally redefined by Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) into a song of melancholic farewell between the Queen and her kingdom, and the people with their land. Why did “Aloha ‘Oe” experience an upsurge in popularity after each of the exercises of colonial power over Hawai’i, regardless of …
The Perils And Promise Of Midwestern Studies, Frederick E. Witzig
The Perils And Promise Of Midwestern Studies, Frederick E. Witzig
Studies in Midwestern History
As I reflect on the eight-year history of Midwest Studies (renamed the Midwest Initiative, then Midwest Matters; here I will use the term MSI, for Midwest Studies Initiative) at Monmouth College in west-central Illinois, two relevant news pieces from the community of small, private, liberal arts colleges circulate around me. The first, that of Iowa Wesleyan College throwing overboard faculty, staff, and academic programs in an effort to stay afloat, is actually more than a year old, but it was refreshed on our campus by a recent IWC visitor who explained its painful repercussions. The second, the startling announcement of …

History's Perilous Pleasures: Experiencing Antiquity In The Postwar Hollywood Epic, Thomas Jefferson West Iii
History's Perilous Pleasures: Experiencing Antiquity In The Postwar Hollywood Epic, Thomas Jefferson West Iii
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation focuses on the mid-20th Century historico-biblical epic—a film genre that flourished within Hollywood from 1949 to 1966 and which took as its subject the depiction of the ancient world—and reads this body of films as a mode of historical engagement. I argue that the historico-biblical epic takes the pressure of the terrifying possibility of the end of human history engendered by the atomic bomb and transmutes this into a series of dialectics, between agency and powerlessness, embodiment and transcendence, desire and punishment, imperial zenith and nadir. While antiquity seems to offer the modern world the ability to escape …
Religion In Contemplative Studies, Daniel J. Moseson
Religion In Contemplative Studies, Daniel J. Moseson
Dissertations - ALL
This project is about the new field of contemplative studies, a field that seeks to use “contemplative” practices, derived mostly (though not entirely) from religious traditions in academic settings, prominently including college pedagogy. First, this project seeks to understand how contemplative studies advocates persuade others (and themselves) that what they are doing is not “religion;” that is, how do they define "religion" in order to situate their own work as non-religious academic inquiry? Second, in the course of my textual and ethnographic research on contemplative studies, it has become apparent that this field adds to the growing rebuttal of religious …

Factors Of Enrollment For K-12 Christian Schools, Scott Harsh
Factors Of Enrollment For K-12 Christian Schools, Scott Harsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Enrollment in independent schools in the U.S. has been in decline for 15 years. Faith-based schools have experienced more significant decline than non-religious schools. School leaders have been struggling to find solutions to prevent further enrollment loss and to promote future growth. The purpose of this study was to explore the reasons parents decide to enroll their children in a faith-based schools. According to the literature, factors associated with national enrollment decline include economic challenges, declining religiosity, increased competition, maturing of business cycle, rising tuition, poor marketing, and generational changes in parental values related to schooling. To explore these and …
Jean-Luc Marion And Gianni Vattimo’S Contributions For The Postmodern Faith, Michael Mcgravey
Jean-Luc Marion And Gianni Vattimo’S Contributions For The Postmodern Faith, Michael Mcgravey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Catholic theology in the postmodern era has encountered various cultural or narrative shifts—both negative and positive—which have helped shape the Roman Catholic Church and Christianity at large. Negatively, the Church has been affected by external factors (e.g., globalization, immigration/emigration, increased access to technology, etc.) and internal struggles (e.g., reduced church attendance, an aging population, etc.). Positively, as others have suggested, postmodernity has ushered in a return to religion through new philosophical and theological ideas (e.g., phenomenology, existentialism, post-metaphysics, etc.). This dissertation aims to contribute to the ongoing postmodern concerns addressed in the cultural and narrative shifts, by focusing on the …
A Theological Analysis Of Confessional-Centric Curriculum Of Christian Religious Education: Towards An Inclusive Religious Pluralistic Centered Curriculum For Nigeria Colleges Of Education, Ilesanmi Ajibola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Desire to live in peace and unity despite the multi ethnic and multi religious composition of Nigeria, remain ideals that are constant in the nation’s Constitution. However, accruable benefits of a culturally and religiously pluralistic society have continued to elude Nigeria due to incessant religious violence arising from the mutual suspicion of Christians and Muslims in the country. Nevertheless, the nation’s National Policy on Education proposes the education sector as one of the platforms to inculcate a sense of unity and religious tolerance in the country. The policy considers the nation’s learning centers and religious courses offered in such institutions …

H. Odera Oruka And The Right To A Human Minimum: A Sagacious Quest For Global Justice, Michael Kamau Mburu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation primarily aims at making contribution to the advancement of philosophy from the practical point of view. It does so by analytically and critically studying H. Odera Oruka (1944-1995), arguably one of the finest 20th century African philosophers. Thus, it identifies, expounds, and critiques Oruka’s philosophical cum ethical commitment by situating him within various philosophical discourses touching such important global issues as justice, human rights, ethical duty, ecology, humanism and politics. It specifically advances Oruka’s argument for the right to a human minimum, establishing how that ethical principle can be applicable in addressing some distressing human conditions …

Historical Text And Historical Archaeology: Hunting The Narrative Of Kievan Rus, Ivory M. Spears
Historical Text And Historical Archaeology: Hunting The Narrative Of Kievan Rus, Ivory M. Spears
Honors Theses
This paper focuses on the historical narrative of Kievan Rus between 860 to 1240 and the importance of historical archaeology in order to gain a clearer understanding of its history. Very few sources written in the 9th to 13th centuries in Rus survive today. The Primary Chronicle is the most widely known and available account of the history of Rus for historians to use. However, scholars utilize the chronicle with caution because the original oldest surviving chronicle was written almost two centuries after the first dated entry. We can expect that not everything written in the chronicles was accurate …
Cultural Combinations In Japanese Art: The False Dichotomy Of Buddhism And Shintō, Danae Reaves-Bey Browne
Cultural Combinations In Japanese Art: The False Dichotomy Of Buddhism And Shintō, Danae Reaves-Bey Browne
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In the latter half of the nineteenth century, the Meiji regime (1868-1912) of Japan declared a mandatory separation of indigenous deities from Buddhist figures. The Meiji government sought to use indigenous rituals, instead of Buddhist rituals, to legitimize its power. It thus codified these beliefs as a national religion, today referred to as Shintō (神道), to emphasize their autonomy. Yet, in spite of its efforts to isolate these beliefs from all others, Japanese spirituality still bears traces of “extra-cultural” religious ideas. This is the result of a long history of religious syncretism (hybridity) in the region. An understanding of the …

India’S Buddhist Circuit(S): A Growing Investment Market For A “Rising” Asia, David Geary
India’S Buddhist Circuit(S): A Growing Investment Market For A “Rising” Asia, David Geary
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
With the growing economic rise of Asia most of the international spotlight has focused on the rapid growth and industrialisation spearheaded by China and India, with little attention on the role of India’s robust religious tourism market that remains a vital part of its economic growth. In recent years, the development and promotion of religious circuits has become a cornerstone of India’s tourism marketing campaign that aims to capture both domestic and foreign exchange earnings. To explore the relationship between tourism and India’s religious circuits further, this article examines the role of India’s Buddhist circuit and how a series of …
Pilgrimage-Tourism: Common Themes In Different Religions, Noga Collins-Kreiner
Pilgrimage-Tourism: Common Themes In Different Religions, Noga Collins-Kreiner
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The paper discusses common themes in different religions regarding pilgrimage-tourism and has four main goals. First, it shows that the boundaries between pilgrimage and tourism have become blurred. Second, it characterises the different changes that have taken place in pilgrimage research in recent years. Third, it re-examines three different pilgrimage case-studies in an effort to draw conclusions pertaining to the ‘pilgrimagetourism nexus’; and fourth, it highlights discrepancies between the ‘old’ paradigm, predicated on the assumption that religious elements lie at the core of pilgrimage, and the results of more recent research on secular models of travel, highlighting alternative and complementary …

Preaching And Sermons, Robert Ellison Ph.D.
Preaching And Sermons, Robert Ellison Ph.D.
English Faculty Research
This essay, published in Volume III of The Oxford History of Protestant Dissenting Traditions, examines the art of preaching during the nineteenth century. Its focus is not the sermons themselves, but rather lectures on preaching delivered to ministerial students in England, the United States, and Canada. Topics addressed in these lectures include not only homiletic theory, but also other aspects of the preacher's work, such as prayer, pastoral visitation, and developing good working relationships with church officers and other members of the congregation.

Transfer Students' Perception Of Their Transition Experiences At A Private, Religiously Affiliated University, Yasdanee Valdes
Transfer Students' Perception Of Their Transition Experiences At A Private, Religiously Affiliated University, Yasdanee Valdes
Open Access Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored the experiences of transfer student as they transition into a small, private, religiously affiliated university. Three theories informed the foundation of transfer student experiences in this study, including Schlossberg’s (1984) Transition Theory, Tinto’s (1987), Theory of Student Departure, and Bean and Metzner’s (1985) Conceptual Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine transfer students to assess their perceptions of transitioning into a small, private, and religiously affiliated university. During the interview, students were also asked to discuss how their experiences at the prior institutions influenced their perceptions of their transition. Grounded theory …
