Audit Quality: Detection Of Material Misstatement, Megan Jones Jan 2018

Audit Quality: Detection Of Material Misstatement, Megan Jones

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation is comprised of three studies that examine characteristics that have the potential to influence auditors' ability to detect material misstatement and therefore, audit quality.;The first study examines the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) inspection process, and its relation to audit quality. This archival study concentrates on the group of companies that hire audit firms after Part II inspection reports containing quality control criticisms are made public. Results suggest that companies that switch to auditors with Part II reports have lower audit quality than companies that switch to auditors without Part II reports. Further, companies that switch to …

Late Victorian Sexuality And Spiritualism: The Place Of The Paranormal In Queer Erotic Partnerships, Sharon E. Kelly Jan 2018

Late Victorian Sexuality And Spiritualism: The Place Of The Paranormal In Queer Erotic Partnerships, Sharon E. Kelly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation argues that fin de siecle navigations of emerging categories of sexual identity were partially expressed in literary representations of supernatural connections, transformations, events, and practices. I build on Sexuality Studies and Queer Theory foundations by such scholars as Foucault, Halberstam, and Warner along with New Historicist scholarship about spiritualism in the nineteenth century to examine the connections between aberrant erotic desires and alternative forms of spirituality. Through readings of the anonymous Teleny (1893), Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, Richard Marsh's The Beetle , and the poetry of Michael Field, I assert that queer sexual identities and acts, …

Signal Fusion And Semantic Similarity Evaluation For Social Media Based Adverse Drug Event Detection, Hameeduddin Irfan Khaja Jan 2018

Signal Fusion And Semantic Similarity Evaluation For Social Media Based Adverse Drug Event Detection, Hameeduddin Irfan Khaja

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent advancements in pharmacovigilance tasks have shown the usage of social media as a resource to obtain real-time signals for drug surveillance. Researchers demonstrated a good potential for the detection of Adverse Drug Events (ADEs) using social media much earlier than the traditional reporting systems maintained by official regulatory authorities like the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Existing automated drug surveillance systems have used various types of social media channels and search query logs for monitoring ADE signals.;In this thesis, we address two key performance issues related to automated drug surveillance systems. The first is to improve the …

Assessing The Reliability Of Two Orthopedic Special Tests To Determine Hip Flexor Contracture With The Assessment Of Pelvic Tilt Angle During A Back Squat, Derrick Grieshaber

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Orthopedic specialists use Special Tests to determine a pathology’s presence. Hip flexor contracture is linked to injury predisposition and postural anomalies. This research examined reliability for the Modified Thomas and Ely’s Special Tests when evaluating hip flexor contracture, and its effect on dynamic exercise. Twenty adults were randomized in a study and analyzed for hip flexor contracture. Dartfish Motion Analysis measured hip and knee flexion angles. Participants performed isometric squats to determine their maximal voluntary isometric contraction, which was later used to calculate exercise prescription for the eight-repetition dynamic back squat. Inter-rater reliability was slight to fair for iliopsoas contracture …

The Relationship Of Hip Muscle Activation And The Incidence Of Shoulder Injury In Collegiate Women's Volleyball Athletes: A Pilot Study, Jessica Marie Kinder

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Previous studies have indicated weak hip muscle activation in baseball pitchers leads to an increased incidence of shoulder injuries. This relationship, however, has not been explored in other overhead athletes, such as volleyball players. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to evaluate each participant’s muscle activation during five dynamic activities. Dynamic activity was normalized according to MMTs for the rectus femoris, biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, and gluteus medius. The GMed during the eccentric box jump was statistically significant for position where setters showed the greatest activation and defensive players the least. The GMax during the single-leg deadlift was statistically significant for …

Identifying The Esthetically Optimal Ap Position Of Maxillary Incisors In Caucasian Females, Mackenzie Boyles-Horan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background and Objectives: The majority of orthodontists routinely evaluate the amount of maxillary incisor display from a frontal perspective, however they do not regularly evaluate a patient's smiling profile with the teeth visible when diagnosing and treatment planning. This study uses the facial plane Glabella Vertical, a vertical line tangent to the subject's soft glabella, to classify the maxilla's AP position. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference in perceived attractiveness between smiling and repose facial profiles and to identify if there is an esthetically optimal AP position of the maxillary incisors in Caucasian …

Ex-Vivo Model For Muscle Exposure To Tumor Cell Conditioned Media, Ikttesh K. Chahal Jan 2018

Ex-Vivo Model For Muscle Exposure To Tumor Cell Conditioned Media, Ikttesh K. Chahal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cancer-induced cachexia is a severe condition resulting in muscle wasting, muscle dysfunction, and an overall increased morbidity and mortality. The cachectic condition is often attributed to altered metabolism, aberrant activation of signaling pathways, and changes in the microenvironment of the skeletal muscle (SKM) through exposure to various host-derived and tumor-derived paracrine factors, delivered through the blood circulation. Previous data from our lab has shown that an increased signaling of Interleukin-15 (IL-15) results in enhanced oxidative capacity, promotion of a more oxidative phenotype and attenuation of muscle fatigue. This effect of IL-15 has yet to be characterized in a cancer-induced model …

Focus On The Child: Preventing The Intergenerational Transmission Of Eating Disorders And Dieting Behavior, Elizabeth Claydon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of research exploring individuals' recall of parental dieting behavior, engagement in "fat talk", or criticism of weight or eating behavior in childhood. This dearth of literature exists in both community samples and in clinical populations of eating disorder patients. There is also limited information on women with a history of eating disorders and their pregnancy experience or anticipation of their pregnancy experience. This dissertation focuses on the aforementioned areas in order to develop the research literature further to understand whether parental feedback (such as parental comments or parental dieting) is associated with health outcomes such …

Reversibly Switching Adhesion Of Smart Adhesives Inspired By Mussel Adhesive Chemistry, Ameya R. Narkar Jan 2018

Reversibly Switching Adhesion Of Smart Adhesives Inspired By Mussel Adhesive Chemistry, Ameya R. Narkar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Catecholic groups in mussel adhesive proteins transition from being strongly adhesive in a reduced state under acidic conditions to being weakly adhesive in an oxidized state under basic conditions. Here, we exploit this pH responsive behavior of catechol and demonstrate that its oxidation state can be manipulated by incorporation of boronic acid to facilitate reversible transitions between strong and weak adhesion. Our first approach involved the addition of 3- acrylamido phenylboronic acid (APBA) to dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) containing adhesives. The synthesized adhesives showed strong adhesion to quartz surface in an acidic medium (pH 3), while weak adhesion was observed on …

Evacuation Trees With Contraflow And Divergence Considerations, Omkar Shirish Achrekar Jan 2018

Evacuation Trees With Contraflow And Divergence Considerations, Omkar Shirish Achrekar

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

In this thesis, we investigate how to evacuate people using the available road transportation network efficiently. To successfully do that, we need to design evacuation model that is fast, safe, and seamless. We enable the first two criteria by developing a macroscopic, time-dynamic evacuation model that aims to maximize the number of people in relatively safer areas of the network at each time point; the third criterion is optimized by constructing an evacuation tree, where the vehicles are evacuated using a single path to safety. Divergence and contraflow policies have been incorporated to enhance the network capacity. Divergence enables specific …

A Lion Or A Shoe: 17-Month-Olds Observing Vs. Acting On An Object In An Object Individuation Task, Savanna Elizabeth Jean Westrom Jellison Jan 2018

A Lion Or A Shoe: 17-Month-Olds Observing Vs. Acting On An Object In An Object Individuation Task, Savanna Elizabeth Jean Westrom Jellison

Human Development and Family Science

Object individuation, the ability to distinguish an object that is currently perceived from one that was previously perceived, is an important cognitive ability used in everyday life. In the current study, we assessed the influence of self-action on infants’ ability to individuate objects. Using a manual search task, we tested eighteen 17- to 18-month-old infants’ ability to individuate objects. Infants either observed as an experimenter hid an object in a covered bucket or they hid the object themselves. The rationale was that if infants perceived the retrieved object as a distinct object from the one hidden, they would continue searching …

An Investigation Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Career Firefighters, Allison Michelle Barry Jan 2018

An Investigation Of Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Fitness In Career Firefighters, Allison Michelle Barry

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Firefighters are responsible for protecting citizens as well as the infrastructure of cities across the United States. In order to safely protect and perform on-duty tasks, firefighters must be capable of performing physiologically demanding skills. Emerging evidence has led to heightened concern for firefighters’ increased obesity levels and decreased physical activity (PA). Formal exercise and PA research specific to firefighters is lacking. More specifically, there is a lack of literature using accelerometers to objectively measure PA. There is more evidence, however, to demonstrate firefighters have a high prevalence of obesity surpassing the general population. Not only are firefighters overweight and …

An Assessment Of Stone Weapon Tip Standardization During The Clovis-Folsom Transition In The Western United States, B. Buchanan, B. Andrews, Michael J. O'Brien, M. I. Eren Jan 2018

An Assessment Of Stone Weapon Tip Standardization During The Clovis-Folsom Transition In The Western United States, B. Buchanan, B. Andrews, Michael J. O'Brien, M. I. Eren

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

It has long been assumed that Folsom points are more standardized than Clovis points, although an adequate test of this proposition has yet to be undertaken. Here, we address that deficiency by using data from a sample of Folsom and Clovis points recovered from sites across the western United States. We used geometric morphometric techniques to capture point shape and then conducted statistical analyses of variability associated with Clovis and Folsom point bases and blades. Our results demonstrate that Folsom bases and blades are less variable than those on earlier Clovis points, indicating an increase in point standardization during the …

Sports Logistics Outsourcing: A Conceptual And Qualitative Study In The Equine Industry, Stephen E. Genchev, Gordon Gray, Stacia Wert-Gray Jan 2018

Sports Logistics Outsourcing: A Conceptual And Qualitative Study In The Equine Industry, Stephen E. Genchev, Gordon Gray, Stacia Wert-Gray

AMTP Proceedings 2018

The equine industry, despite its considerable impact on the economy, remains overlooked in contemporary supply chain research. The current paper aims at narrowing the gap along two directions: First, the equine industry supply chain is conceptualized, and its main participants and relationships involved are identified. Second, the complex nature of these relationships is illustrated within the context of a specific strategic decision, outsourcing. For years, outsourcing was considered a formal transaction-cost economics decision with little or no consideration for additional factors. This limiting perspective provides the stimulus for the current study’s use of a qualitative approach to get a better …

Measuring The Effectiveness Of Nba Marketing Techniques: A Comparison Between Small And Large Market Teams, Kyle Ronkartz, Ronald Dick, Christopher Atwater, Robert Baker, Craig Esherick

AMTP Proceedings 2018

“NBA teams use a variety of marketing techniques to try to increase game attendance.” (Dick and Turner 2007) Past studies have been done on comparisons of marketing techniques in different seasons (Dick and Sack, 2003), and the comparison of value between fans and marketing directors (Dick and Turner, 2007). Thus, this study is focused on comparing the difference in the value of marketing strategies between “small” market and “large” market teams in the NBA. This study will give us a better understanding on the difference in marketing techniques for “small” market teams compared to the “large” market teams.
