V2karst V1.1: A Parsimonious Large-Scale Integrated Vegetation–Recharge Model To Simulate The Impact Of Climate And Land Cover Change In Karst Regions, Fanny Sarrazin, Andreas Hartmann, Francesca Pianosi, Rafeal Rosolem, Thorsten Wagener Dec 2018

V2karst V1.1: A Parsimonious Large-Scale Integrated Vegetation–Recharge Model To Simulate The Impact Of Climate And Land Cover Change In Karst Regions, Fanny Sarrazin, Andreas Hartmann, Francesca Pianosi, Rafeal Rosolem, Thorsten Wagener

KIP Articles

Karst aquifers are an important source of drinking water in many regions of the world. Karst areas are highly permeable and produce large amounts of groundwater recharge, while surface runoff is often negligible. As a result, recharge in these systems may have a different sensitivity to climate and land cover changes than in other less permeable systems. However, little is known about the combined impact of climate and land cover changes in karst areas at large scales. In particular, the representation of land cover, and its controls on evapotranspiration, has been very limited in previous karst hydrological models. In this …

Searching For Identity: Connecting Students To Young Adult Literature In The Classroom Through Language, Samantha Correia Dec 2018

Searching For Identity: Connecting Students To Young Adult Literature In The Classroom Through Language, Samantha Correia

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Young adult literature largely influences the cultures and the lives of young people; often these popular young adult novels become well-known as they are made into movies and are in high demand. These novels are not just for young adults; these texts can be read at any age and have accessible themes that many people can relate to. However, in this research, young adult literature will be discussed in terms of how these novels affect children, mostly from ages ten to eighteen, as many of the characters in these texts are a similar age to them. Young adult literature (YA …

Psychological And Demographic Differences Of Bdsm Practitioners, Sabrina Jefferson Dec 2018

Psychological And Demographic Differences Of Bdsm Practitioners, Sabrina Jefferson

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study was to gain more information about demographic and psychological differences between the bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism (BDSM) population and the general population. BDSM has become more prominent in the knowledge of the general population with the notoriety of E.L. James’ book series 50 Shades of Grey, but even with the new prominence of BDSM in American households, there is a lack of knowledge about BDSM practitioners among psychotherapists. In this study, data was gathered from a sample of BDSM practitioners and a general population sample on a variety of demographic and psychological variables. Independent samples …

Marriage In Victorian England, Cheryl Ann Mcdonnell Dec 2018

Marriage In Victorian England, Cheryl Ann Mcdonnell

Honors Program Theses and Projects

When most people consider the lives of women in the Victorian age in Great Britain, a period which covers the years of Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901, they have a pretty rigid idea of what women were like in that era. Most see Victorian women as stifled and restricted, happy in their domestic role, both before and after their marriage. This stereotype is not accurate in reality to the women of the Victorian era. In this essay, I plan to explore what the reality of daily life was for Victorian women. More specifically I plan to examine what …

Investigating Multiple Streams Of Consciousness: Using Descriptive Experience Sampling To Explore Internally And Externally Directed Streams Of Thought, Charles Fernyhough, Ben Alderson-Day, Russel T. Hurlburt, Simone Kühn

Psychology Faculty Research

Research into resting-state cognition has often struggled with the challenge of assessing inner experience in the resting state. We employed Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES), a method aimed at generating detailed and high-fidelity descriptions of experience, to investigate how experience in the resting state can vary between internal, external, and multiple simultaneous streams. Using a large body of experiential and brain activation data acquired from five DES participants, independent raters classified sampled moments of experience according to whether they were internally directed, externally directed, or contained elements of both at the same time. In line with existing models, comparison of internal …

Viola Davis And Barriers In Film, Jasmine Floyd

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

This research examines the ways in which children of impoverished families and communities are put at a disadvantage due to the the correlation between poverty and social exclusion, analyzing several African-American children who grew up below the poverty line. Social exclusion in poor communities and neighborhoods is so hindering to a person’s development that they are not able to improve their life circumstances and raise themselves out of poverty. The second part of the research looks at the history of racial inequality in film as well as the marginalization of women of color in the entertainment industry today. Viola Davis, …

Effects Of Cold Storage On Nondiapausing Eggs Of The Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Ryan W. Geisert, Dalton C. Ludwick, Bruce E. Hibbard Dec 2018

Effects Of Cold Storage On Nondiapausing Eggs Of The Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Ryan W. Geisert, Dalton C. Ludwick, Bruce E. Hibbard

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, became much easier to research with the development of a nondiapausing rootworm strain. In the event that the eggs cannot be used immediately researchers have been known to delay egg hatch by storing the eggs at low temperatures. It is not well known how this technique could affect egg hatch or larval development, which could alter the results of an experiment. To test for this nondiapausing eggs of the western corn rootworm were stored at low temperatures to test for potential negative effects on hatch and larval development. Eggs were stored in either …

Muslim Women In The Diaspora: Shaping Lives And Negotiating Their Marriages, Enaya Othman Dec 2018

Muslim Women In The Diaspora: Shaping Lives And Negotiating Their Marriages, Enaya Othman

Arabic Languages and Literatures

This chapter uses Muslim communities in greater Milwaukee region in Wisconsin, United States as a case study to examine marriage negotiation among Palestinian women. I argue that Muslim women increasingly play a vital role in making changes to their gender roles and enhancing their marriage choices. Intermarriage outside their ethnic and national groups, increase in marriage age, and the rate of unmarried women become visible phenomena among second-generation Muslim. The decreasing number of suitable potential spouses drove Palestinian-American women to look outside their national and ethnic group for marriage partners. This made them prioritize their universal, religious identity as Muslims …

N. Lake Tahoe Protection Dist. V. Bd. Of Admin., 134 Nev. Adv. Op. 93 (Dec. 6, 2018) (En Banc), Hannah Nelson

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Court determined that NRS 616B.578(4) does not require an employer to know the precise medical terminology for an employee’s permanent physical impairment before the subsequent injury. However, the statute requires that an employee’s preexisting permanent physical impairment be fairly and reasonably observed from a written record and the impairment must amount to at least 6% whole person impairment.

User Attitudes About Duo Two-Factor Authentication At Byu, Jonathan Dutson Dec 2018

User Attitudes About Duo Two-Factor Authentication At Byu, Jonathan Dutson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Simple password-based authentication provides insufficient protection against increasingly common incidents of online identity theft and data loss. Although two-factor authentication (2FA) provides users with increased protection against attackers, users have mixed feelings about the usability of 2FA. We surveyed the students, faculty, and staff of Brigham Young University (BYU) to measure user sentiment about DUO Security, the 2FA system adopted by BYU in 2017. We find that most users consider DUO to be annoying, and about half of those surveyed expressed a preference for authentication without using a second-factor. About half of all participants reported at least one instance of …

The Future Of The #Metoo Movement, Lauren M. Clohessy Dec 2018

The Future Of The #Metoo Movement, Lauren M. Clohessy

Honors Capstones

The current era of the Me Too movement started in 2016 when Alyssa Milano tweeted out a concept: for her Twitter followers to tweet using #MeToo if they were victims of sexual misconduct. The actual Me Too movement started over ten years ago with Tarana Burke, who founded the movement to advocate for young, black women who were victims of sexual misconduct. The two movements merged into one and is now the social media movement society knows today. With Me Too came a large amount of backlash, similar to any other social media movement, but the amount of backlash depends …

Peninsula Medical School

Proper temporal and spatial activation of stem cells relies on highly coordinated cell signaling. The primary cilium is the sensory organelle that is responsible for transmitting extracellular signals into a cell. Primary cilium size, architecture, and assembly-disassembly dynamics are under rigid cell cycle-dependent control. Using mouse incisor tooth epithelia as a model, we show that ciliary dynamics in stem cells require the proper functions of a cholesterol-binding membrane glycoprotein, Prominin-1 (Prom1/CD133), which controls sequential recruitment of ciliary membrane components, histone deacetylase, and transcription factors. Nuclear translocation of Prom1 and these molecules is particularly evident in transit amplifying cells, the immediate …

Effective Teaching Methods For Elementary Students With Add/Adhd, Jane Bensen

Honors Theses

This paper first describes ADHD, or attention deficit/hyperactive disorder, then discusses the effects on students with ADD/ADHD when elements of choice (specifically alternate seating and book choice) and strength-based strategies are used in the classroom. Research is conducted as a literature review through peer-reviewed articles on ERIC educational database. The literature shows that incorporating choice in the classroom, including offering alternative seating, is a beneficial practice for students with ADD/ADHD. Additionally, strengthbased strategies are a beneficial way to highlight and work with traits that students with ADD/ADHD possess in the classroom in a positive way. Some of which include incorporating …
