This article discusses few of the processes involved for the creation of a maritime data bank.
Surviving Domestic Violence And Navigating The Academy: An Autoethnography, Robert L. Hill
Surviving Domestic Violence And Navigating The Academy: An Autoethnography, Robert L. Hill
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This autoethnography takes a critical view of my experiences surviving domestic violence while navigating the university’s resources to support survivors as well as my academic life. I turn to Spade’s (2015) critical trans politics in order to complicate the notion of higher education structures as neutral and to question who benefits from existing domestic violence survivor support programs and procedures. Guided by Nash’s (2004) guidelines for scholarly personal narrative, I tell my story of surviving in five parts, beginning with initial conversations and continuing with processes of surviving, leaving home, mandatory reporting, and (not) learning. Throughout the narrative, I analyze …

The Detection Of Hazardous Materials Using Genetically Engineered Bacteria, Daniel Wynn
Open Access Dissertations
The development of technology that can be used to quickly and reliably assay a wide variety of matrices for the presence of specific small molecules has long been a high priority for scientists. These methods are valuable tools that see use in many fields, including biomedicine and environmental analysis. Although many contemporary technologies exist, their use is, for the most part, limited by their expense, required instrumentation, and long assay times. In an effort to address these limitations, many examples of biotechnology have been produced and this interest in biosensors continues. Herein, a number of projects to develop new bioanalytical …
Rebellion And Change On The Road, Natalie Rude
Rebellion And Change On The Road, Natalie Rude
English Department: Traveling American Modernism (ENG 366, Fall 2018)
This article talks about rebellion, which has always been a prominent piece of American history, but it has always been associated with world changing events. Rebellion is an action that is anything, regardless of size, that is out of the ordinary that results in personal change while on the road. Unfortunately, Rebellion on the road is gendered, meaning that while men can rebel and change wherever they wish, women can only rebel on the road, and all the personal changes women make disappear as soon as they leave the road. This is largely due to the social spaces constructed by …

Social Media And Self-Esteem: The Relationship Between Social Media And Self-Esteem, Jody Don Barker
Student Theses and Dissertations
With social media being a prominent platform in the days of sharing information over the internet, it can affect one’s self-esteem if not careful. The current study examines the relationship of social media usage and self-esteem. From the 218 participants surveyed, results show that social media does have some influence on a person’s self-esteem. A person with a high self-esteem is more likely to use social media for finding entertaining content, promote products/services, and talk about their accomplishments, while a person with a low self-esteem will use it to not feel alone, but they do not post selfies. A Speech Recognition Noise Analysis Using A Biological Neural Network, Logan Matthew Walters
A Speech Recognition Noise Analysis Using A Biological Neural Network, Logan Matthew Walters
Student Theses and Dissertations
Typically, modern Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) engines are developed using artificial neural networks (ANN) that utilize probabilistic and stochastic models for analyzing data and computing outputs. As such, limitations are seen with this structure of implementation due to the volume of data required for accuracy and scalability. Resultantly, different software solutions are being considered to improve the accuracy of ASR engines in these unique cases where commonly used models fall short. The presented research illustrates the potential of a biological neural network (BNN) if implemented as an ASR engine. Theoretical comparisons are made between the efficiency of a BNN and …

School counselors gave reactions to the original anti-bullying video, which developed into several themes (i.e. isolation, emotional impact, insufficient technology, etc.). These themes provide insight into the current issue on …
Examining The Varied Impacts Of Economic Globalization: A Comparative Analysis Of Four American States, Marina Smoske
Examining The Varied Impacts Of Economic Globalization: A Comparative Analysis Of Four American States, Marina Smoske
Honors Program Theses and Projects
As a subject of extensive scholarship and a potent political buzzword, globalization is a deeply polarizing concept that inspires conflicting views about its effects. In the United States, popular debate often describes globalization as having uniformly positive or negative impacts on the country’s economic health. This line of reasoning is employed particularly with respect to shifts in the labor market and its implications on Americans’ economic prosperity. This reasoning, however, is not a theoretically sound or an empirically useful way to describe and understand the economic impact of globalization, for it implies that a complex, multifaceted phenomenon produces uniform results …

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a serious concern, that requires close monitoring and facilitation of self-management skills and strategies, as well as development of a sense of self-efficacy, in patients with this chronic disease. The development of nurse-led Diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs, combined with a multidisciplinary approach to care and management, is a safe and effective means of helping patients with uncontrolled T2DM to cultivate positive health behaviors, prevent long-term disability and effectively control blood sugars.
A DSME program like this was developed and implemented at Mercy Midtown Family Practice, for patients with a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of …
Writing To Heal: Viewing Teacher Identity Through The Lens Of Autoethnography, Erin Parke
Writing To Heal: Viewing Teacher Identity Through The Lens Of Autoethnography, Erin Parke
The Qualitative Report
This autoethnographic work explores my experience with illness (specifically anti-N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis), recovery, and career change all in the span of a few months. Through reflexive interviews and a first-person narrative, I analyzed the shifting nature of my identity, specifically my teacher identity as I moved from struggling teacher, to patient, and back to teacher again. I also analyzed how the act of writing, and writing the narrative of this autoethnography, assisted in the healing process. My story shows that in moving from pre-illness to post-illness, I shifted from a strict, content-based teacher to a constructivist facilitator with …

Making The Invisible Visible: Affordances And Hindrances Of Using Tangible Objects In Identity Research, Amber Simpson
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the role of tangible objects (i.e., rings) in understanding individual’s STEM identity, which in this study is defined as an interdisciplinary belief that an individual has about her or himself regarding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The rings allowed participants to position themselves within STEM disciplines and to further illustrate and narrate this position through the various ring sizes, and for some, the spatial arrangement of the rings. However, the use of the rings seemed to limit participants to describing who they are within STEM in the moment, as well as not …
