Attention Market. The Concept And Challenges In A Merger Assessment, Krzysztof Kanton, Jarosław Łukawski, Szymon Murek

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The article focuses on the issue of ‘attention’ paid by consumers to internet and mobile apps content, which from the economic perspective is a resource that falls short. The authors analyze attention as a commodity and present the characteristics of the markets on which it is traded. The publication indicates the challenges faced by competition authorities in assessing concentrations between entities active on the attention market – the so-called attention brokers. In the latter part of the article, the authors analyze the methodology used by competition authorities to assess concentrations between the biggest modern attention brokers. Conclusions and postulates regarding …

BACKGROUND: Wrist-worn activity monitors are often used to monitor heart rate (HR) and energy expenditure (EE) in a variety of settings including more recently in medical applications. The use of real-time physiological signals to inform medical systems including drug delivery systems and decision support systems will depend on the accuracy of the signals being measured, including accuracy of HR and EE. Prior studies assessed accuracy of wearables only during steady-state aerobic exercise.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to validate the accuracy of both HR and EE for 2 common wrist-worn devices during a variety of dynamic activities that …

Myrmekite And Strain Weakening In Granitoid Mylonites, A Ceccato, L Menegon, G Pennacchioni, Lfg Morales Dec 2018

Myrmekite And Strain Weakening In Granitoid Mylonites, A Ceccato, L Menegon, G Pennacchioni, Lfg Morales

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

At mid-crustal conditions, deformation of feldspar is mainly accommodated by a combination of fracturing, dissolution–precipitation, and reaction-weakening mechanisms. In particular, K-feldspar is reaction-weakened by the formation of strain-induced myrmekite – a fine-grained symplectite of plagioclase and quartz. Here we use electron backscattered diffraction to (i) investigate the microstructure of a granodiorite mylonite, developed at ~ 450 °C during cooling of the Rieserferner pluton (Eastern Alps); and (ii) assess the microstructural processes and the weakening associated with myrmekite development. Our analysis shows that the crystallographic orientation of plagioclase in pristine myrmekite was controlled by that of the replaced K-feldspar. Myrmekite nucleation …

Virtual Reality (VR) is a new platform that provides the public with an immersive experience in a virtual space. With the development and promotion of VR hardware devices, virtual reality technology is applied in various industries such as the advertising of products, traveling, game, art, therapy, education and many others. Unlike media such as videos and pictures, VR applications allow users to interact with content instead of only watching. Beyond the novelty of the technology, for a meaningful immersive experience, VR interaction design and visual design must work together to place the user in a natural and comfortable state. The …

Will Competition Law Solve The Vendor Lock-In Problem In The B2b Software Sector?, Piotr Semeniuk Dec 2018

Will Competition Law Solve The Vendor Lock-In Problem In The B2b Software Sector?, Piotr Semeniuk

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

Competition law is increasingly being used (so far, mainly in the US) in order to prevent the vendor lock-in problem in the B2B software sector. International academia also calls for increased activities of competition authorities in addressing vendor lock-in problems. Some business practices and contractual clauses applied by vendors in their Polish IT contracts could also be classified as an anticompetitive practice (e.g. exclusivities, tying, bundling, loyalty rebates, refusals to grant a license or to grant access to information on interoperability). Competition law in the world of IT contracts can supply buyers or competitors with arguments to challenge some of …

Violation Of Data Protection Law As An Abuse Of A Dominant Position? The Bundeskartellamt’S Proceedings Against Facebook, Iga Małobęcka-Szwast Dec 2018

Violation Of Data Protection Law As An Abuse Of A Dominant Position? The Bundeskartellamt’S Proceedings Against Facebook, Iga Małobęcka-Szwast

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

The article attempts to assess the main assumptions of the proceedings initiated in March 2016 by the Bundeskartellamt, the German competition authority, against Facebook, and thus answer the question whether an infringement of data protection law may constitute an abuse of a dominant position under EU competition law. In the wider perspective, the proceedings conducted by the Bundeskartellamt also raise important questions regarding the relationship between competition law and data protection law, including data protection issues in competition law, as well as the competences of antitrust authorities to assess breaches of data protection law.

Widespread, Prolonged Microbial Limestone Deposition And Large, Rapid Sulfur Isotope Excursions: A New Perspective On The Early Triassic From The Western U.S., Brad M. Jeffrey Dec 2018

Widespread, Prolonged Microbial Limestone Deposition And Large, Rapid Sulfur Isotope Excursions: A New Perspective On The Early Triassic From The Western U.S., Brad M. Jeffrey

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Early Triassic records a ~5 My period of marine biological recovery following the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME, ~252 My). Global oceans were characterized by warm sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), widespread anoxia, and major perturbations to the carbon cycle, the collective result of repeated massive Siberian Traps eruptions and associated global climate feedbacks. Globally widespread microbial deposits (stromatolites, thrombolites) developed in shallow marine environments. Several marine isotope records (C, O, S, U) indicate repeated, large-magnitude shifts related to paleoceanographic events during the recovery of marine ecosystems following the EPME.

Chapter 1 describes and interprets a widespread (~400 km along strike) Smithian …

The epilepsies affect around 65 million people worldwide and have a substantial missing heritability component. We report a genome-wide mega-analysis involving 15,212 individuals with epilepsy and 29,677 controls, which reveals 16 genome-wide significant loci, of which 11 are novel. Using various prioritization criteria, we pinpoint the 21 most likely epilepsy genes at these loci, with the majority in genetic generalized epilepsies. These genes have diverse biological functions, including coding for ion-channel subunits, transcription factors and a vitamin-B6 metabolism enzyme. Converging evidence shows that the common variants associated with epilepsy play a role in epigenetic regulation of gene expression in the …

Embracing Intersectionality To Create A Collective Living Theory Of Practice, Sara B. Woolf, Nathalis Wamba Dec 2018

Embracing Intersectionality To Create A Collective Living Theory Of Practice, Sara B. Woolf, Nathalis Wamba

Publications and Research

In this paper, we describe pivotal experiences that have shaped our respective professional journeys when teaching action research. We situate these experiences in relation to how they have contributed to our collective living theory of practice. This discussion unfolded as we explored ways to improve our own practices and the practices of our students. We conclude that this and similar questions can only be authentically answered when we as practitioners and faculty in higher education settings are willing to interrogate the contexts within which we interact and the complex intersections between our own intentional practices and selves and our students’ …

Questioning Combatant’S Privilege In Unjust Wars, Harry Van Der Linden Dec 2018

Questioning Combatant’S Privilege In Unjust Wars, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Following international humanitarian law, soldiers who are authorized by their states to fight wars of aggression have a legal right to kill enemy soldiers, and (indirectly) even enemy civilians, as long as they respect such jus in bello norms as discrimination and proportionality. I criticize a variety of arguments in support of this “combatant’s privilege” of aggressor soldiers that maintain that these soldiers have a moral right to kill or are not culpable for their wrongful killing. I also contest some arguments in support of the view that even though soldiers executing wars of aggression may be morally liable for …

Upgrading Trend Of Machinery In China's Export Sophistication, Yue Liu Dec 2018

Upgrading Trend Of Machinery In China's Export Sophistication, Yue Liu

Honors Capstones

Previous studies have found that China is “special” in exporting highly sophisticated goods not comparable with its income level. In this article, we focus on whether China’s machinery is exceptional sophistication. We make use of a unique world machinery production dataset to access China’s upgrading trajectory in the global machinery industry. We use a special way to measure the machinery sophistication in different countries and in different categories. Contrary to existing trade studies, we find no evidence that China’s machinery production activities are more sophisticated than one would expect form its level of development.
