Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: Comparison Between The Two Most Used Diagnostic Criteria, Enrique Gomez Pomar, Vanessa A. Concina, Aaron Samide, Philip M. Westgate, Henrietta S. Bada

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Objectives: To compare the Shennan's and the consensus definition of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) workshop and analyze specific risk factors associated with each definition.

Study design: Retrospective analysis of records of 274 infants admitted to a level IV intensive care unit. Infants were classified as having BPD or no BPD by both definitions. Differences in incidence and risk factors were analyzed. Statistical methods included descriptive statistics, comparative tests, and marginal logistic regression modeling.

Results: The estimated difference in prevalence was 32% [95% CI: (26%, 37%), (p < 0.0001)] between both criteria. The prevalence of BPD was 80% higher based on the NIH criteria [RR = 1.80; 95% CI: (1.58, 2.06)]. Infants with no BPD by the Shennan definition were breathing room air with or without positive or continuous pressure support and were most likely to be discharged home on oxygen [OR = 4.47, 95% CI: (1.20, 16.61), p = 0.03]. Communicating Information On Nature-Related Topics: Preferred Information Channels And Trust In Sources, Emily J. Wilkins, Holly M. Miller, Elizabeth Tilak, Rudy M. Schuster

Environment and Society Student Research

How information is communicated influences the public’s environmental perceptions and behaviors. Information channels and sources both play an important role in the dissemination of information. Trust in a source is often used as a proxy for whether a particular piece of information is credible. To determine preferences for information channels and trust in various sources for information on nature-related topics, a mail-out survey was sent to randomly selected U.S. addresses (n = 1,030). Diverse groups of people may have differing communication preferences. Therefore, we explored differences in channel preferences and trust by demographics using regression models. Overall, the most preferred …

An Evaluation Of Extended Producer Responsibility (Epr) As A Policy Option For Compostable Plastics In California, Amy Franz Dec 2018

An Evaluation Of Extended Producer Responsibility (Epr) As A Policy Option For Compostable Plastics In California, Amy Franz

Master's Projects and Capstones

This research project evaluates Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in California as a viable option to address the end-of-life management challenges identified for compostable plastics. The evaluation is done in three ways (1) review the main challenges identified for managing compostable plastics against the existing California EPR laws for mercury thermostats, agricultural pesticide containers, carpet, paint and mattresses to look for overlap in issues EPR has been used to address, (2) review compostable plastics in the context of the Product Selection Criteria used by California, (3) Look at the California Framework for setting up an EPR program to lay out what …

Marktplatz Zur Koordinierung Und Finanzierung Von Open Source Software, Georg J.P. Link, Malvika Rao, Don Marti, Andy Leak, Rich Bodo

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Geochronology is essential in the geosciences. It is used to resolve the durations and rates of earth processes, as well as test causative relationships among events. Such data are increasingly required to conduct cutting-edge, transformative, earth-science research. The growing need for geochronology is accompanied by strong demand to enhance the ability of labs to meet this pressure and to increase community awareness of how these data are produced and interpreted. For example, a 2015 National Science Foundation (NSF) report on opportunities and challenges for U.S. geochronology research noted: "While there has never been a time when users have had greater …

A Multi-Dimensional Framework For The Development Of Authentic Consumer Products, Per Kristav, Izabelle Bäckström, Axel Nordin, Anders Warell, Olaf Diegel

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

A common assumption in product value literature is that authenticity is what contemporary consumers value the most. However, as this paper illustrates, the meaning of authenticity is unclear and the term appears foreign to product development practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to explore in what ways product development professionals talk about product value in general and how this relates to authenticity. The analysis of the interviews reveals that product developers must embrace authenticity as a holistic framework if the phenomenon is to be constructive for companies within the product development industry. In line with the concept of authenticity …

Understory Community Assembly Following Wildfire In Boreal Forests: Shift From Stochasticity To Competitive Exclusion And Environmental Filtering, Bo Liu, Han Y. H. Chen, Jian Yang Dec 2018

Understory Community Assembly Following Wildfire In Boreal Forests: Shift From Stochasticity To Competitive Exclusion And Environmental Filtering, Bo Liu, Han Y. H. Chen, Jian Yang

Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Understory vegetation accounts for the majority of plant species diversity and serves as a driver of overstory succession and nutrient cycling in boreal forest ecosystems. However, investigations of the underlying assembly processes of understory vegetation associated with stand development following a wildfire disturbance are rare, particularly in Eurasian boreal forests. In this study, we measured the phylogenetic and functional diversity and trait dispersions of understory communities and tested how these patterns changed with stand age in the Great Xing'an Mountains of Northeastern China. Contrary to our expectation, we found that understory functional traits were phylogenetically convergent. We found that random …

Foreign Policy Of The Mughal Empire In India During The Reign Of Jalaluddin Akbar 1556-1605 Ad, Raqeeb Hassoun Aboudi, Saudi N/A, Mutaib Khalaf Jaber Al-Rishawi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The research handles the policy of the Mughal emperor Jalal Aldeen Akber with reference to the regional states. Mainly in the first section, it is to consider the Mughal-Safavid relationship which is a very old historical one due to the geographical location together with cultural and economic ties between India and Persian. In the second section, the relationship between Akber and Uzbek has been considered to indicate that the latter descended from the same ancestor (the Mughal), this relationship was cautiously considered due to the expansionist ambition of Uzbek, especially after appropriating Bedkhashan that was under the control of Mughal. …

Puritan Conflict With The Establishment In England And Migration To The Netherlands 1603-1620, Bassem Kassar Kazem, Mishal Mufreh Daher

After the Puritan ideas were spread mainly in English circles in the sixteenth century AD Especially during the reign of Elizabeth (1558-1603), and most of its followers in England became an independent church from the Archbishopric of Canterbury. In which they called for the cleansing of the Church of everything that has an impact on the Catholic Church, whether in faith or even in the form of religious rituals or ecclesiastical bodies Their ideas found their way among all strata of English society, and in small and medium-sized cities they had a wide influence, This led to a violent conflict …

Parallelism In One Of Hillary Clinton's Speeches: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Saleema Abdulzahra Almehmdawi Dec 2018

Parallelism In One Of Hillary Clinton's Speeches: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Saleema Abdulzahra Almehmdawi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Parallelism is a linguistic phenomenon. It refers to the use of the same pattern of words for two or more ideas having the same degree of importance arranged in successful lines and in a balanced manner, enabling the reader to understand the meaning or grasp the relationship between ideas. Stylistically, parallelism, with its different types, is used by politicians to persuade audience to sympathize with their views, and make their speech more memorable. This paper studies parallelism as a rhetorical device from a critical discourse perspective following van Dijk's (1993) socio-cognitive approach and his notion of Ideological Square (2006a). The …
