Health Care Improvement Initiative: Outcomes And Impact Of An Academic-Practice Partnership Between A Large Integrated Health System’S Nurse Scholars Academy And The University Of San Francisco School Of Nursing And Health Professions, Ryan Fuller

Master's Projects and Capstones

By December 2018, a large integrated health system’s Nurse Scholars Academy (NSA) will have financially-sponsored 64 registered nurses to return to school through a strategic academic-practice partnership program at the University of San Francisco (USF). Referred to as ‘Nurse Scholars,' health system employees elected to return-to-school through NSA. As a five-year initiative, NSA was at risk for not receiving additional funding beyond 2020 without a thorough outcomes analysis that articulated the outcomes to executive leadership.

This health system employs more than 23,000 registered nurses in Northern California (NCAL). The NSA is a region-wide effort to accelerate academic progression, leadership development, …

Reducing Inpatient Readmissions Through Early Follow-Up Appointment Planning: A Quality Improvement Project, Isabella Cuenco Dec 2018

Reducing Inpatient Readmissions Through Early Follow-Up Appointment Planning: A Quality Improvement Project, Isabella Cuenco

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: Inpatient readmissions have a highly negative impact on healthcare systems. Not only do these hospitalizations have a detrimental effect on patient outcomes they also are accompanied by a prohibitive financial burden to the hospitals.

Context: Follow-up appointment with a primary care provider after discharge has been demonstrated as a viable strategy to reduce the risk of readmissions.

Interventions: Create a volunteer program to schedule patient appointments with a primary care provider within seven days of discharge.

Measures and Results: Compare the number of patients that were discharged with a follow-up appointment after the intervention to before the intervention, and …

Improving The Staff Responsiveness By Bundling Care, Practicing Proactive Authentic Hourly Visits, And Using The Four P’S, Robert Vega Dec 2018

Improving The Staff Responsiveness By Bundling Care, Practicing Proactive Authentic Hourly Visits, And Using The Four P’S, Robert Vega

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

Problem

Staff responsiveness is an important Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Star Rating composite tool that hospitals monitor because it is consumer-driven information. The intent is that the HCAHPS composite promotes patient satisfaction, contributes to the prevention of harm, and can save millions of dollars (Danaf et al., 2017). On admission, the patient is orientated to their room, provided a nurse call light button to use, and told not to get out of bed alone and to wait for their nurse (Mitchell et al., 2014). On Three North, a gap exists in the delay it …

Music Education And Its Impact On L2 Learning, Johanna Nilsson Dec 2018

Music Education And Its Impact On L2 Learning, Johanna Nilsson

Master's Projects and Capstones

English Language Learners are disproportionately underrepresented in secondary music classes in the United States. They are systematically excluded due to overly restrictive schedules, high emphasis on test scores and academic remediation, real and perceived cost of participation, and the types of courses that are offered at most secondary schools. At the same time, musical intervention research has revealed that musical ability is linked to literacy, pronunciation, and vocabulary retention, all aspects of second language acquisition. By excluding English Language Learners from music education, we could be denying them a tool that could positively impact their language acquisition. However, most of …

Power In Plain Sight: Exploring The Class Privilege At In Curriculum At Wealthy High Schools, Miriam Gross Dec 2018

Power In Plain Sight: Exploring The Class Privilege At In Curriculum At Wealthy High Schools, Miriam Gross

Master's Projects and Capstones

While secondary education has moderately improved in its approach of racial and gender issues in the classroom, social class remains an undiscussed topic, especially in school communities serving students of the highest social classes where financial privilege often intersects with racial privilege. The lack of discussion of social class is considered against the role schooling is meant to play in creating good citizens and the different ways that is construed. Taking into account research into the identity formation of wealthy adolescents, the hidden curriculum in secondary schools that supports the current social order, and pedagogical practices that could be used …

Calls For Action: Exhibition Interactives As Method To Promote Civic Engagement In Community-Centered Museums, Angeera Khadka

Master's Projects and Capstones

This Capstone explores the potential for museums to be agents of social change in their communities through exhibition interactives that promote civic engagement. Derived from two linked movements of the progressive education pedagogy and the community-centered museum, these interactives allow museums to take an active role in their communities. Three recent case studies that encouraged and empowered their visitors to take action in their communities are analyzed. This analysis reveals key factors that enabled the three institutions to collaborate and co-create with community members to create these interactives. The implementation of such interactives presents the museum studies field …

Identification Of Perioperative Barriers To Enhanced Recovery After Surgery In Colorectal Surgical Populations, Leah Marshall Dec 2018

Identification Of Perioperative Barriers To Enhanced Recovery After Surgery In Colorectal Surgical Populations, Leah Marshall

Master's Projects and Capstones

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has evolved over the past 30 years through evidence-based interventions. Enhanced recovery after surgery uses a multidisciplinary and multimodal evidence-based approach to maximize patient recovery. Perianesthesia nurses are critical to its success and have an obligation to understand and participate in the process to optimize patient outcomes. Despite proving to decrease complications and duration of stay in colorectal surgery patients without following colorectal surgery, the implementation of ERAS in colorectal pathways have been met with barriers (Alawadi et al., 2015). Subramaniam & Horgan (2016) describe ERAS pathways as evidence-based interventions that eliminate dated practices based …

Homeward Bound: The Struggle Senior Dogs Face To Find Their Fur-Ever Homes, An Exhibition Proposal, Natalia Chavez Dec 2018

Homeward Bound: The Struggle Senior Dogs Face To Find Their Fur-Ever Homes, An Exhibition Proposal, Natalia Chavez

Master's Projects and Capstones

For this capstone project, I created a proposal for an exhibition centering around animal rights that focuses on the rights of senior dogs in United States animal shelters. Homeward Bound: The Struggle Senior Dogs Face to Find Their Fur-Ever Homes intends to raise awareness of the difficulties senior dogs face in being adopted from animal shelters, while promoting individuals to be active and engaged participants in actions to support the needs of senior shelter dogs.

Senior dogs have the highest probability of euthanasia in shelters.[1] Shelters and rescue organizations provide much needed assistance to senior dogs, supporting their …

Asian America And Empathy: Understanding The Chinese American Experience Through The Art Of Flo Oy Wong, Brienne Wong Dec 2018

Asian America And Empathy: Understanding The Chinese American Experience Through The Art Of Flo Oy Wong, Brienne Wong

Master's Projects and Capstones

This capstone examines how the work of Chinese American artist Flo Oy Wong could be an impetus for dialogue for creating empathy for the Asian American experience. The capstone briefly discusses Chinese American history as the Chinese are one of the earliest immigrant groups to the United States and Asian American art history which demonstrates the role of art for Asian Americans. It also describes the importance of empathy in society and how some museums today are trying to apply empathy to serve their communities. Within this framework, I discuss artist Flo Oy Wong whose ability to tell stories about …

Staff Retention Through Standardized Training Materials In Adult Primary Care Clinic, David Smith Dec 2018

Staff Retention Through Standardized Training Materials In Adult Primary Care Clinic, David Smith

Master's Projects and Capstones

As non-profits, community health clinics face a unique set of challenges. Primary amongst these is a shortage of financial resources. Staff turnover, including Registered Nurses (RNs) and Medical Assistants (MAs), can result in avoidable increased wage costs related to training of newly-hired RNs/MAs (clinical staff). Retention of experienced RNs/MAs can be directly correlated with job satisfaction, the obverse of which is job frustration. The intent of this RN/MA training and orientation project is to ameliorate frustration related to a lack of informational resources and clear competency expectations. Upon completion and implementation, project efficacy will be assessed via four longitudinal measures: …

Strain Rate Effects On Energy Dissipation During Hypervelocity Penetration Of Polymeric Materials, Michael Hunter Bowering Dec 2018

Strain Rate Effects On Energy Dissipation During Hypervelocity Penetration Of Polymeric Materials, Michael Hunter Bowering

Theses and Dissertations

Energy dissipation during penetration is an important consideration in materials selection for lightweight armoring to protect against hypervelocity impacts (HVIs). Impact-induced glass transition in polymeric materials has been observed to increase energy dissipation during penetration. Incorporating unconventional armor materials like polymers could improve performance in these types of applications. A series of HVIs was performed, with impact velocities over the range of 2-7 km/s, on samples of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene and poly(methyl methacrylate). A relationship between back face debris cloud velocity and impact velocity was developed for each material. Damage zone sizes were compared, offering insights into the effects …

Can You Hear Me? An Exploration Of Interracial Coupling Between African Americans And White Americans From The Perspective Of The Black Woman, Monica Branch Dec 2018

Can You Hear Me? An Exploration Of Interracial Coupling Between African Americans And White Americans From The Perspective Of The Black Woman, Monica Branch

Student Scholarship

black-white racial tension is a sociological agent that permeates almost all forms of implicit biases when it comes to this specific race relation. The perspective of the black woman remains a highly suppressed viewpoint in the conversation of interracial dating between black and white people. The history of black and white interaction serves as a critical social basis for the dynamic of this country culturally, politically and economically. Society projects the common discourse that the United States (and the rest of the word) lives in a “post-racial” society, and that color, specifically black people, are not seen, but regarded as …

Transient Seepage In A Variably Saturated Levee: Laboratory Testing, Field Monitoring And Numerical Modeling, Xavier Arnaldo Rivera-Hernandez Dec 2018

Transient Seepage In A Variably Saturated Levee: Laboratory Testing, Field Monitoring And Numerical Modeling, Xavier Arnaldo Rivera-Hernandez

Theses and Dissertations

Several hydraulic loadings impose earthen levees to time-dependent variably saturated seepage conditions. The main objective of this study is to improve the analysis of levees under transient seepage with the use of unsaturated soil mechanics. An extensive set of laboratory testing, field monitoring and numerical modeling are performed to analyze a silty sand setback levee located near Seattle, WA. In-situ data obtained from field monitoring are used to monitor suction and effective stress within the levee’s embankment and foundation over the past two years. Soil samples taken from the site are used to perform index, water retention, and unsaturated multi-stage …

Trapped In The Towers, Jaclyn Jeffrey-Wilensky Dec 2018

Trapped In The Towers, Jaclyn Jeffrey-Wilensky

New York City’s public housing, known as NYCHA, is a popular choice for disabled and elderly adults. 40% of NYCHA residents receive support from government programs intended to help older New Yorkers and New Yorkers with disabilities, and 32% of NYCHA households include an elderly person. Contrast that to New York City as a whole, where 11.2% of the population is disabled and 13% is elderly. For many disabled and elderly New Yorkers, NYCHA is one of precious few affordable options in an increasingly expensive city. But recent reporting suggests that NYCHA housing may be especially poorly suited for people …
