Effecting Change In Their Community: The Pilsen Neighbors Community Council And Teresa Fraga, 1970-1990, Benjamin E. Skipor
Honors Capstones
The purpose of my research was to find how the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) and Teresa Fraga were able to affect change within the Pilsen neighborhood located in the near Southwest Side of Chicago. This paper outlines the issues that the PNCC worked to correct and the methods that they used. This research is primary source driven. Most documents were accessed through the Community Archives located at University of DePaul Library. Additional materials were found from the Chicago Tribune. The research resulted in an outline of the groups most successful methods: making the community aware and invested in solving …

Anticorrosion Behavior Of Deposited Magnetite On Galvanized Steel In Saline Water Using Rf-Magnetron Sputtering, Nafeesa J. Kadhim, Ahlam M. Farhan, Harith I. Jaafer
Baghdad Science Journal
Thin films of Magnetite have been deposited on Galvanized Steel (G-S) alloy using RF-reactive magnetron sputtering technique and protection efficiency of the corrosion of G-S. A Three-Electrodes Cell was used in saline water (3.5 % NaCl) solution at different temperatures (298, 308, 318 and 328K) using potentiostatic techniques with. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and fitting impedance data via Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) were applied to G-S alloy with Fe3O4 and tested in 3.5 % NaCl solution at 298K.Results taken from Nyquist and Bode plots were analyzed using software provided with the instrument. The results obtained show that the rate of …

Climate Change Adaptation Strategies And Approaches For Outdoor Recreation, Daniel O'Toole, Leslie A. Brandt, Maria K. Janowiak, Danielle Shannon, Patricia Leopold, Stephen D. Handler, Et Al.
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Climate change will alter opportunities and demand for outdoor recreation through altered winter weather conditions and season length, climate-driven changes in user preferences, and damage to recreational infrastructure, among other factors. To ensure that outdoor recreation remains sustainable in the face of these challenges, natural resource managers may need to adapt their recreation management. One of the major challenges of adapting recreation to climate change is translating broad concepts into specific, tangible actions. Using a combination of in-depth interviews of recreational managers and a review of peer-reviewed literature and government reports, we developed a synthesis of impacts, strategies, and approaches, …

Disparity Does Not Mean Bias: Making Sense Of Observed Racial Disparities In Fatal Officer-Involved Shootings With Multiple Benchmarks, Brandon Tregle, Justin Nix, Geoffrey P. Alpert
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Racial disparities in officer-involved shootings have dominated the national discourse recently. Unfortunately, we have yet to identify an appropriate benchmark, or at-risk population, to put these observed racial disparities into context. In this article, we use seven benchmarks—based on population data from the US Census, police-citizen interaction data from the Police-Public Contact Survey, and arrest data from the Uniform Crime Report—to compare OIS fatality rates for black and white citizens from 2015 to 2017. Using population, police-citizen interactions, or total arrests as a benchmark, we observe that black citizens appear more likely than white citizens to be fatally shot by …

Hispanic Ethnicity And Poison-Related Outcomes, Florida 2010-2015, Wendy Blair Stephan
Open Access Dissertations
Poisoning is the leading cause of injury death in the United States, with most fatal poisonings resulting from drug overdoses in adults. Much remains unknown about epidemiologic factors at the county level that might affect population risk for poison-related outcomes. Hispanic individuals consistently have lower death and hospitalizations rates from poisoning, so it was hypothesized that having a larger proportion of Hispanic residents, might, in effect, “protect” a county from high rates of poisoning. This ecological, longitudinal study examined Hispanic concentration at the county-level in Florida and the incidence of poison death, nonfatal hospitalizations from poisoning, and calls to poison …

Sex Offender Perceptions: Investigating Social Supports As Buffers To The Consequences Of Megan's Law, Melissa D. Colson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify supports and whether supports perceived as helpful lessen negative experiences with job difficulty, housing difficulty, vigilantism, and isolation. Additionally, registrants' perceptions of hopelessness and sex offender registration and community notification laws (SORN) as a public safety measure were examined to determine whether more helpful supports positively impacted their attitudes. Another aspect of this study explored differences with males and females since females have rarely been examined. Narratives were compiled to further describe offender experiences and perceptions. This study used a survey to collect data on sex offenders, including offender demographics and victim …

Victimization Of The Homeless: Public Perceptions, Public Policies, And Implications For Social Work Practice, Marion M. Turner, Simon P. Funge, Wesley J. Gabbard
Journal of Social Work in the Global Community
Homeless individuals are particularly vulnerable to victimization, sometimes resulting in fatalities. Theories of victimization prove useful to understanding the risks inherent in being homeless as well as the public’s perception of the homeless population. Problematically, public policy that criminalizes this population may exacerbate the victimization of this group. Municipalities have turned to law enforcement and the criminal justice system to respond to people living in public spaces. Programs that ensure adequate income, affordable housing, and supportive services to prevent homelessness and address the needs of those who are homeless are essential. In addition, increased law enforcement training and the implementation …

Nondestructive Assessment Of Wood Members In A Viewing Tower In Potawatomi State Park, Door County, Wisconsin, Us, Robert Ross, Xiping Wang, C. Adam Senalik
College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications
The State of Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is responsible for operating one of the largest state park systems in the United States. Potawatomi State Park, located on the Door County peninsula, consists of about 1,200 acres of flat to gently rolling upland terrain bordered by steep slopes and rugged limestone cliffs along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. A 75-ft observation tower sits atop a 150-ft bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, was asked to conduct an assessment of the main support timbers of the tower. This report summarizes the results obtained from the inspection and assessment. …
Public And Private Spending On Justice In Canada, Lisa Moore, Mitchell Perlmutter, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Public And Private Spending On Justice In Canada, Lisa Moore, Mitchell Perlmutter, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Canadian Forum on Civil Justice
As a ubiquitous aspect of everyday life, it should come as little surprise that legal problems have a tremendous cumulative cost on society. Assessing the cost of civil, family and criminal justice problems in Canada is a complex and multifaceted undertaking, owing in part to the number of agencies involved in the administration of justice, the various types of justice system expenses, and the intangible and ‘knock on’ costs that often result from experiencing legal problems. Further, costs can be examined in monetary, temporal, personal, physical health, mental health and other terms. The monetary costs are of course the most …
