Attorney General Karl A. Racine is the first elected Attorney General of the District of Columbia. With his inauguration at the beginning of 2015, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) began an era of independence for the agency and accountability to District residents. As the chief legal officer for the District of Columbia, Attorney General Racine relies on his prior legal and leadership experience as a public defender and the first African-American managing partner of a top-100 US law firm, Venable LLP, to advise the Mayor and District agencies, defend the city in court and use the law to …

I was invited to deliver the September 2017 Dean's Lecture, on which this essay is based, in March of 2017, shortly after the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the 45th president of the United States. I had originally planned to present on one of my longstanding research areas, the intersections of contract law and critical race theory, but as the spring wore on, I began to feel an urgency about using my expertise to comment more directly on the increasingly overt but trenchant race, gender, sex, and class inequalities and conflicts that have plagued our nation for centuries.

Constitutionally Different: A Child’S Right To Substantive Due Process, Tiffani N. Darden
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
Kent v. United States required trial courts to conduct an individualized assessment before transferring a juvenile defendant to criminal jurisdiction. Several decades later, in Miller v. Alabama, the Supreme Court prohibited imposing life without parole sentences upon youth offenders without first conducting an individualized assessment. The latter holding also pronounced that juveniles are constitutionally different from adults, finding support in social science, developmental psychology and neuroscience advancements. This same body of adolescent behavioral research casts fundamental fairness concerns on a transferred youth’s ability to effectively participate in other parts of the justice process when removed to criminal court. Whereas …

Discourses Of Deception: (Re)Examining America's War On Drugs, Benjamin Steven Boyce
Discourses Of Deception: (Re)Examining America's War On Drugs, Benjamin Steven Boyce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
America's war on drugs is a failed experiment that has caused more damage than it will ever prevent. From its original design to its contemporary manifestations, the war on drugs is a conflict that remains firmly rooted in white supremacy. In contemporary Western societies, the rhetoric of both political leaders and mass-mediated narratives becomes the raw material of subjective reality. Since the war on drugs began nearly a century ago, the spectacle of mass media has been consistently utilized by white political elites as a vehicle of misinformation - as a well-oiled machine for spreading the false social narrative that …

Las Hijas De Violencia: Performance, The Street, And Online Discourse, Madison M. Snider
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores street harassment as a contentious practice in the rhetorical spaces of the street and social media posting through a case study of the performance group Las Hijas de Violencia. Through anarchistic direct action resistance tactics, the group confronted harassers in the streets of Mexico City and their recordings launched global media interest which led to viral online sharing. Widespread sharing of their performance led to the creation of public discursive space, through comments sections, which was utilized to measure attitudes toward street harassment and feminist direct action protest. Contextualized in a growing call for an end to …
Smart Baby Monitors: The Modern Nanny Or A Home Invader, Sarah Ensenat
Smart Baby Monitors: The Modern Nanny Or A Home Invader, Sarah Ensenat
Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology
Smart baby monitors exist to help parents protect and watch over their children. The smart baby monitors act as a second set of eyes when parents cannot be in the same room as their children. Low-tech hackers take advantage of gaps in the security of smart baby monitors. A hacker violates a consumer’s privacy by gaining access to private information, viewing the home and its occupants, and even speaking to children through the monitor.
This comment advocates for stricter security legislation for smart baby monitors. Without new legislation, manufacturers of smart baby monitors do not apply or invest in the …
Localised Differences In The Conception Of Cultural And Economic Security: Examining The Multiculturalism Hypothesis In Singapore, Eugene Teng, Chan-Hoong Leong
Localised Differences In The Conception Of Cultural And Economic Security: Examining The Multiculturalism Hypothesis In Singapore, Eugene Teng, Chan-Hoong Leong
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
This study examines the multiculturalism hypothesis (Berry, Kalin, & Taylor, 1977) in Singapore, a multi-racial nation steeped in Asian-Confucian culture, in an attempt to distil the underlying constructs of cultural and economic security. Using a nationally representative sample of 924 native-born Singapore citizens, we examined whether national pride, family ties and economic optimism mitigated the effect of realistic and symbolic threat on attitude toward number of immigrants. The results showed that, paradoxically, stronger family ties predicted less acceptance of immigrants but buffered against perceived realistic threat. More economic optimism predicted more acceptance of immigrants but also made one more sensitive …

Grassroots Relief: Informal And Community-Based Response To Extreme Weather Events From Occupy Sandy To The Cajun Navy, Gordon Douglas, Eric Klinenberg, Liz Koslov
Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning
This study examines the role that local grassroots efforts play in disaster response and recovery. Drawing on findings from an ongoing research project on the experience of Hurricane Sandy in New York City since 2012 as well as new data from more recent hurricanes and other events, we show how volunteers, community-based organizations, and activist groups often play an important role in both immediate response and longer-term recovery efforts. Many communities hit hard by Sandy and other disasters were significantly aided by locally organized and 'informal' responses, often from groups that initially had nothing to do with emergency preparedness (community …
