Advertising In A World Full Of Human Trafficking: How Advertising And Human Trafficking Coincide, April M. Cherry

Honors Theses

As a young woman, I have been groomed to worry about the consequences of what I wear, what I say, and how I interact with men. My grandma is constantly sending me emails with new information on sexual assault or kidnapping cases around the area in which I live. I see articles about human trafficking schemes on my news feed almost weekly. As a young woman, I am conditioned to be on guard at all times because the dangers of being abducted or attacked, specifically trafficked, are portrayed to be more likely than they truly are. Why is this? Why …

The Effects Of The Relationship Between Racism And The Environment On Personal Health, Hannah M. Batsche Dec 2018

The Effects Of The Relationship Between Racism And The Environment On Personal Health, Hannah M. Batsche

Honors Theses

Substantial research evidence suggests that racial and ethnic minority groups living in America do not have the same access and opportunities for maximized health as their white counterparts. Factors of the environment, termed social determinates of health, explain this phenomenon. There are five social determinates of health which are influenced by racism: education, economic stability, neighborhood and built environment, health and healthcare, and social and community context. Research has been conducted in various populations on how the relationship between racism and the five social determinants of health negatively affect the health of individuals. However, little research has been conducted in …

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Background: Menstrual exile, also known as Chhaupadi, is a tradition of “untouchability” in far-western Nepal. Forbidden from touching other people and objects, women and girls are required to live away from the community, typically in a livestock shed, during menstruation. We assessed the lived experiences of Chhaupadi among Nepalese adolescent girls in the far-western Achham district of Nepal, observed the safety and sanitation of their living spaces during Chhaupadi, and assessed the perceptions of local adult stakeholders towards the practice of Chhaupadi. Methods: We collected data from 107 adolescent girls using a self-administered survey in two local schools in Achham. …

Addressing Issues Relating To Food Deserts Through Empowerment; A Community Garden Design Proposal For The Glencrest Neighborhood Of Fort Worth, Texas, Steven Nunez

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The high rate of population growth in urban areas over the past century has contributed to the creation of food deserts, which are areas characterized by the lack of access to affordable fresh and healthy foods. Food deserts, also known as low-access communities, are believed to be linked to food insecurity and diet related health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that approximately 23.5 million Americans live in food deserts, often occurring in historically disadvantaged neighborhoods (USDA, 2009). Introducing full-service grocery stores to these areas is frequently promoted as the …

When Care Becomes Futile: Perspectives Of Acute Care Medical-Surgical Nurses, Angela Mulcahy

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Caring for patients at end-of-life is a difficult patient assignment for a nurse. Possessing the knowledge, skills, and means to communicate with and advocate for patients is key to providing quality care. A concept analysis of death literacy identified one specific challenge for nurses, futile care. Futile care has been linked to increased patient suffering, increased health care costs, use of scarce resources, and moral distress. Futile care exists in the medical-surgical acute care setting, but the concept has not been explored within this population. More knowledge from bedside nurses was needed to explore the concept and identify ways to …

Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users Quality Of Life: Is Response Shift Supported?, Casey Faigle

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

The use of home invasive mechanical ventilation (HIMV) has risen over the past ten years due to improved health outcomes, transitioning more complex care to the home, and evidence supports the benefits of this therapy. In order to plan care for this population, it is important to understand issues that affect an individual’s quality of life (QoL). Previous research provided mixed results, limited guidance of factors that affect QoL, and lacked a theoretical framework that lends questions to validity.

The first manuscript, Home Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Users’ Quality of Life: A Review of Literature, provides a literature review of available …

A Multicase Study Exploring Women’S Narratives Of Infertility: Implications For Counselors, Staci L. Born, Christin L. Carotta, Kristine Ramsay-Seaner

The Qualitative Report

Infertility affects 6.7 million women in the United States (Chandra, Copen, & Stephen, 2013). Women’s experiences with infertility are not only influenced by biological health factors, but also by social, cultural, and personal variables. Given the prevalence and complexity of infertility, additional research is needed to further examine the nuances of women’s experiences. The purpose of this multicase study, as informed by four individual cases, was to explore how women construct their infertility narratives. Review of reflective journals found five common elements: (1) Emotional Rollercoaster, (2) Mind-Body (Dis)Connection, (3) Secret Identity, (4) Supportive vs. Constrained Communication Patterns, and (5) Fatalistic- …

Testing The Structural Invariance Of Affective Commitment On Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior Across Clan And Hierarchy Organizational Culture Types, Julia A. Fulmore

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) is concerned with employees’ engagement in unethical conduct for the benefit of the organization that is immoral and/or illegal. Research findings on motivators of UPB show some contradictory findings that need to be resolved. Considering the empirical findings that clan culture discourages unethical behavior while hierarchy culture encourages unethical behavior along with the contradicting empirical findings between affective commitment and UPB based on samples with different cultures, this study sought to empirically assess the contradictory findings in the literature by testing the structural invariance of affective organizational commitment on UPB based on the two organizational of …

Sense - Recommendation System Based On Affective Interpretations Of Social Media Posts: A Proposed User Interface Design, Zheng Zhang

Theses

It is now easier and cheaper for people to get involved in technology, and most people are obtaining or receiving tons of information nowadays, such as recommendations. Different recommendations are filled with our devices like smartphones, tablets or even wearable devices. However, most searches and recommendation systems fail to take into consideration the emotional context related to a user’s input and action, and as a consequence, people can hardly receive personalized, emotion-related, user-based recommendations. Though people are given various choices about lives based on searches and saved data, those recommendations can hardly improve the stress and difficulties of accomplishing daily …

Change In Brain Volume And Cortical Thickness After Behavioral And Surgical Weight Loss Intervention, Cara Bohon, Allan Geliebter

Lander College of Arts and Sciences Publications and Research

Obesity is associated with reduced cortical thickness and brain volume, which may be related to poor nutrition. Given that brain atrophy in anorexia nervosa recovers with nutritional improvements and weight gain, it is worth examining how brain structure changes at the other end of the weight spectrum with weight loss. Thus, this study aimed to examine change in cortical thickness and brain volume in 47 patients with severe obesity who participated in no treatment, behavioral weight loss, or bariatric surgery. T1-weighted MRI scans were conducted pre-treatment and approximately four months later. Measures of cortical thickness, gray matter volume, and white …

Defining And Regulating Cryptocurrency: Fake Internet Money Or Legitimate Medium Of Exchange?, Susan Alkadri

Duke Law & Technology Review

Digitalization makes almost everything quicker, sleeker, and more efficient. Many argue cryptocurrency is the future of money and payment transfers. This paper explores how the unique nature of cryptocurrencies creates barriers to a strict application of traditional regulatory strategies. Indeed, state and federal regulators remain uncertain if and how they can regulate this cutting-edge technology. Cryptocurrency businesses face difficulty navigating the unclear regulatory landscape, and consumers frequently fall prey to misinformation. To reconcile these concerns, this paper asserts cryptocurrency functions as “currency” or “money” and should be treated as such for regulatory purposes. It also proposes each state implement a …

Instructional Materials For Stac 139 Course, Jesse Welsh

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects

Every semester, nearly 150 undergraduate and graduate students enroll in STAC 139 courses at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. This course, initially aimed to inspire physical activity and wellness in BYU students interested in running, has evolved and matured in its objectives as new instructors have made alterations to the course in both structure, content, and execution as they have worked within loose-fitting parameters.

This evolution has brought with it a tension between the objectives of the STAC 139 instructors and the legacy elements of the course provided to them from the STAC organization. Recognizing this tension, the project …

Surveying Research On The Teaching And Learning Of Conceptual Understanding Of Fraction Arithmetic, Sabreen Abedrabo Dec 2018

Surveying Research On The Teaching And Learning Of Conceptual Understanding Of Fraction Arithmetic, Sabreen Abedrabo

Honors Capstones

In the US, fractions are often taught in an incoherent way and fraction operations are taught without meaning. Reform efforts continue to try to improve this situation and many rich tools have been developed for teaching fraction computation with meaning. In particular, students need to be able to think of fractions as quantities and understand how operations like multiplication and division relate those quantities. To think about these operations coherently, students must be able to think of fractions themselves as units of which other fractions can be formed (e.g. 2/3 of 3/7). We will investigate which is known about student …

Relation Between Parents' Goals And Early Adolescents' Social Skills, Justin B. Arms

Honors Capstones

This project studied adolescent outcomes of different parent goals. Specifically, this project looks at whether parent centered goals and child centered goals are correlated with adolescent social skills. We broke down adolescent social skills into four different categories- assertion, cooperation, empathy, and self-control. Participants in the study were 78 7th graders and their primary caregiver (usually the child’s mother). Data was collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews conducted during home visits. The study failed to find significant correlations between parent centered goals and the outcome variables, as well as between child centered goals and the outcome variables. Because of this, …
