A Matched Pair Of Test Houses With Synthetic Occupants To Investigate Summertime Overheating, Ben M. Roberts, David Allinson, Kevin J. Lomas Jan 2018

A Matched Pair Of Test Houses With Synthetic Occupants To Investigate Summertime Overheating, Ben M. Roberts, David Allinson, Kevin J. Lomas

SDAR* Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research

Summertime overheating is increasingly prevalent in both new and existing UK dwellings. High internal temperatures can be dangerous to vulnerable occupants, disrupt sleep and cause thermal discomfort. The mitigation or exacerbation of overheating through simple occupant interventions like window opening and blind use needs better understanding if homes are to be comfortable and safe in summer without the use of air conditioning. This paper describes the adaptation of two adjoining, semi-detached houses to create a matched pair of test houses for full-scale, side-by-side summertime overheating experiments under real weather conditions. Synthetic occupancy was installed to allow dynamic remote control of …

The Spirituality Of Tour Guides And Their Impact On Visitors Experience At Sacred Sites, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin Jan 2018

The Spirituality Of Tour Guides And Their Impact On Visitors Experience At Sacred Sites, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin

Conference papers

It has been widely acknowledged that tour-guides play a vital role in the visitor experience, and significantly impact on the sort of experiences visitors get at sites visited (Cohen et al.,2002; Pizam & Riechel, 1996), and have been dubbed as key elements in the complex interaction between the visitor and the sites visited (Cohen-Hattab and Shoval 2015). Although there has been a proliferation of studies conducted with regards to the role of tour guides in visitor’s experience at cultural heritage tourism attractions, there is still very little exploration of the role of tour guides in the visitor experience management …

Misogyny Detection And Classification In English Tweets: The Experience Of The Itt Team, John Cardiff, Elena Shushkevich

Conference Papers

The problem of online misogyny and women-based offending has become increasingly widespread, and the automatic detection of such messages is an urgent priority. In this paper, we present an approach based on an ensemble of Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machines, and Naïve Bayes models for the detection of misogyny in texts extracted from the Twitter platform. Our method has been presented in the framework of the participation in the Automatic Misogyny Identification (AMI) Shared Task in the EVALITA 2018 evaluation campaign.

Programming: Predicting Student Success Early In Cs1. A Re-Validation And Replication Study, Keith Quille, Susan Bergin Jan 2018

Programming: Predicting Student Success Early In Cs1. A Re-Validation And Replication Study, Keith Quille, Susan Bergin

Articles

This paper describes a large, multi-institutional revalidation study conducted in the academic year 2015-16. Six hundred and ninetytwo students participated in this study, from 11 institutions (ten institutions in Ireland and one in Denmark). The primary goal was to validate and further develop an existing computational prediction model called Predict Student Success (PreSS). In doing so, this study addressed a call from the 2015 ITiCSE working group (the second "Grand Challenge"), to "systematically analyse and verify previous studies using data from multiple contexts to tease out tacit factors that contribute to previously observed outcomes". PreSS was developed and validated in …

On The Reliability, Validity And Sensitivity Of Three Mental Workload Assessment Techniques For The Evaluation Of Instructional Designs: A Case Study In A Third-Level Course, Luca Longo Jan 2018

On The Reliability, Validity And Sensitivity Of Three Mental Workload Assessment Techniques For The Evaluation Of Instructional Designs: A Case Study In A Third-Level Course, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) has been conceived for instructional designers eager to create instructional resources that are presented in a way that encourages the activities of the learners and optimise their performance, thus their learning. Although it has been researched for many years, it has been criticised because of its theoretical clarity and its methodological approach. In particular, one fundamental and open problem is the measurement of its cognitive load types and the measurement of the overall cognitive load of learners during learning tasks. This paper is aimed at investigating the reliability, validity and sensitivity of existing mental workload assessment …

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Social Constructivist Teaching Approach, Based On Trigger Questions, Through Measures Of Mental Workload And Efficiency, Federico Gobbo, Luca Longo, Declan O'Sullivan, Giuliano Orru Jan 2018

An Investigation Of The Impact Of A Social Constructivist Teaching Approach, Based On Trigger Questions, Through Measures Of Mental Workload And Efficiency, Federico Gobbo, Luca Longo, Declan O'Sullivan, Giuliano Orru

Conference papers

Social constructivism is grounded on the construction of information with a focus on collaborative learning through social interactions. However, it tends to ignore the human mental architecture, pillar of cognitivism. A characteristic of cognitivism is that instructional designs built upon it are generally explicit, contrarily to constructivism. This position paper proposes a novel learning task that is aimed at combining both the approaches through the use of trigger questions in a collaborative activity executed after a traditional delivery of instructions. To evaluate this new task, a metric of efficiency based upon a measure of mental workload and a measure of …

A Comparison Of Classical Versus Deep Learning Techniques For Abusive Content Detection On Social Media Sites, Hao Che, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2018

A Comparison Of Classical Versus Deep Learning Techniques For Abusive Content Detection On Social Media Sites, Hao Che, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

The automated detection of abusive content on social media websites faces a variety of challenges including imbalanced training sets, the identification of an appropriate feature representation and the selection of optimal classifiers. Classifiers such as support vector machines (SVM), combined with bag of words or ngram feature representation, have traditionally dominated in text classification for decades. With the recent emergence of deep learning and word embeddings, an increasing number of researchers have started to focus on deep neural networks. In this paper, our aim is to explore cutting-edge techniques in automated abusive content detection. We use two deep learning approaches: …

Predicting Happiness - Comparison Of Supervised Machine Learning Techniques Performance On A Multiclass Classification Problem, Dorota Nieciecka Jan 2018

Predicting Happiness - Comparison Of Supervised Machine Learning Techniques Performance On A Multiclass Classification Problem, Dorota Nieciecka

Dissertations

In the modern world, especially in contemporary economies and politics, a population's subjective well-being is a frequent subject of the public debate. As comparisons of happiness levels in different countries are published, different circumstances and their effect on the value of the subjective well-being reported by people are also analysed. However, a significant amount of the research related to subjective well-being and its determinants is still based upon survey answers and employing conventional statistical methods providing details regarding correlations and causality between different factors and subjective well-being. Application of Supervised Machine Learning techniques for prediction of subjective well-being may provide …

A Demographic Analysis To Determine User Vulnerability Among Several Categories Of Phishing Attacks., Robert Griffin

Dissertations

Phishing attacks have been on a meteoric rise in the last number of years, with 2016 seeing a 65% increase. The attacks range from targeting individuals with personalised messages to spam attacks from bot accounts. With the chances of being targeted by a phishing attack increasing, it is important to identify who is most at risk in order to help alleviate this threat. The aim of this study is to examine members from several demographics and their vulnerability to three types of phishing using data collected from a survey (n = 198). The survey tested the participant’s ability to recognise …

Applying A Universal Design Approach To Empower Children With Multiple Impairments In Assistive Technology Assessment, Trish Mackeogh, Karola Dillenburg, John Donovan

Research and Innovation - Other

Rapid developments in technology, coinciding with the shift in educational ideology towards the inclusion of children with multiple disabilities, has led to increased calls for a Universal Design (UD) approach to promoting, user-friendly, proactive, transparent, and accessible environments and to the importance of Assistive Technology (AT) applications. For children with disabilities, technologies provide opportunities for greater and more flexible access to activities then traditional interfaces if applied and matched successfully. Relatively high abandonment rates of assistive technology have been documented, often due to a lack of user involvement in the assessment process. The field of Universal Design is showing that …

Joint Religiosity And Married Couples’ Sexual Satisfaction, Jeffrey P. Dew, Jeremy E. Uecker, Brian J. Willoughby

Faculty Publications

Although many studies have examined the association between religion and sexuality, the majority of these studies have focused on non marital sex. Unfortunately, despite the fact that a satisfying sexual relationship plays a critical role in married couples' relationship quality and stability, the associations between religiosity and marital sexual satisfaction are not well understood. Thus, to examine the association between religiosity and couples' reports of married sexual satisfaction, the authors of this study used dyadic data from a nationally representative sample of married couples (N = 1,368) between the ages of 18 and 45. They used both joint and …

Participants in this study were 226 high school students. The students were from schools in the mid-west. Goal orientation, parental communication style, and autonomy support emerged as factors, which significantly explained variance in student academic achievement. The demographic variables of school, ethnicity, and grade …

Information Availability And Congeniality, Selective Exposure, And Reinforcement Effect, Kunto Adi Wibowo Jan 2018

Information Availability And Congeniality, Selective Exposure, And Reinforcement Effect, Kunto Adi Wibowo

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study examined the effect of information availability on selective exposure and the effect of selective exposure on attitude reinforcement through emotional arousal. Cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias theories were utilized as framework to answer the effect of information availability. For the attitude reinforcement through emotional arousal, cognitive dissonance, selective exposure, and affective intelligent theories were employed. This study employed a novel approach by utilizing different proportions of congenial and uncongenial information as experimental conditions, high congenial, high uncongenial, and control conditions, to test the effects of information availability on selective exposure.

Results demonstrated that information availability affects selective exposure …

A Defense Of Epistemic Invariantism And Intellectualism, Lucas Lockard Jan 2018

A Defense Of Epistemic Invariantism And Intellectualism, Lucas Lockard

Wayne State University Dissertations

The traditional view of knowledge includes two plausible claims. The first claim is that the truth-conditions required to know some proposition p do not vary. So, for any two subjects who have the same epistemic position regarding p, either both know that p or both do not know that p. An implication of this invariantist position is that any difference in knowledge will be explained by a difference in their epistemic position. The second claim is that only epistemic or ‘truth-conducive’ reasons are relevant to considerations of knowledge. This intellectualist position has recently come under attack from those who argue …

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle Jan 2018

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle

Papers

A universal approach to strategy formulation in higher education implies one that is fit for the many and complex contingencies faced by that institution. Reviews of current form of strategising indicate that the present approach to strategic management falls short of meeting that criterion. The paper suggests that this deficiency might be addressed by adopting a much more fluid perception of the university as an organisation and devising a form of strategic management that that takes greater account of the paradoxical nature of the institution and the environment in which it operates. It argues that deficiencies in the present form …

Designing The Transition To Higher Education For Students From Under-Represented Groups, Trevor Vaugh, Martha Brandes, Gemma Lynch, Olivia Mcneill, Alyssa Brigham

Papers

Universities are increasingly seeking to open access routes and identify ways of encouraging under-represented groups to consider higher education as an option. This cohort of students often have distinct challenges associated with disability, maturity and socioeconomic disadvantage. Maynooth University, through the Maynooth University access programme (MAP) and the Launchpad Orientation Programme (Launchpad), has proven successful in supporting these groups, helping them transition into and through higher education. Unfortunately the challenges associated with under-represented groups can lead to increased, often unarticulated difficulties, resulting in greater reliance on services and higher dropout rates compared to the average student. We discuss here a …

Role Of Breastfeeding Duration, Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy, And Dna-Methylation For The Risk Of Eczema, Nandini Mukherjee Jan 2018

Role Of Breastfeeding Duration, Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy, And Dna-Methylation For The Risk Of Eczema, Nandini Mukherjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Prior studies linking breastfeeding duration and maternal gestational smoking, respectively, to offspring eczema report contradictory findings. However, it is not known whether maternal gestational smoking and breastfeeding duration can jointly influence eczema and whether these exposures mediate their effect on eczema via DNA Methylation (DNA-M) of CpG (cytosine-phosphate-guanine) sites. With data from the Isle of Wight (IOW) birth cohort, UK, we first evaluated the combined effect of maternal gestational smoking and breastfeeding duration on eczema at ages 1-to-2 (n=980), 4 (n=902), 10 (n=966), and 18 years (n=929) using Generalized estimating equations (GEE). We found a protective effect of longer duration …

Diagnosticity And Effects Of Haptic Cues In Service Contexts, Subhash Jha Jan 2018

Diagnosticity And Effects Of Haptic Cues In Service Contexts, Subhash Jha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While prior research has shown that haptic stimuli may influence many aspects of consumer behavior, the role of haptic cues in service context has not been explored. In two essays, this dissertation fills this void and finds that a simple haptic cue can positively influence perceptions and behavior in servicescape. Essay 1 examines the importance of haptic cues in shaping service quality perceptions. Through four studies - in the context of a bank, an airline, a restaurant and a health club - it extends understanding by examining the impact of different types of cues (e.g., hardness, weight, and texture) on …
