Comparison Of Face-To-Face And Synchronous Web-Based Training In Motivational Interviewing For Health And Human Service Professionals: Does Training Method Matter?, Amanda Elizabeth Fairweather Jan 2018

Comparison Of Face-To-Face And Synchronous Web-Based Training In Motivational Interviewing For Health And Human Service Professionals: Does Training Method Matter?, Amanda Elizabeth Fairweather

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered technique that builds intrinsic motivation for behavior change that healthcare professionals can acquire to provide better care for their clients. Currently, MI training is done face-to-face; however, to make training more accessible, online training needs to be evaluated. Eighteen human and health service professionals were randomized and participated in fourteen hours of either a face-to-face or online synchronous MI training. To distinguish skill level and proficiency between the groups participants completed an audio recording with another participant and was coded using Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) 4.2.1. There was statistical significance (p=0.045) in the …

Focus On The Child: Preventing The Intergenerational Transmission Of Eating Disorders And Dieting Behavior, Elizabeth Claydon Jan 2018

Focus On The Child: Preventing The Intergenerational Transmission Of Eating Disorders And Dieting Behavior, Elizabeth Claydon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of research exploring individuals' recall of parental dieting behavior, engagement in "fat talk", or criticism of weight or eating behavior in childhood. This dearth of literature exists in both community samples and in clinical populations of eating disorder patients. There is also limited information on women with a history of eating disorders and their pregnancy experience or anticipation of their pregnancy experience. This dissertation focuses on the aforementioned areas in order to develop the research literature further to understand whether parental feedback (such as parental comments or parental dieting) is associated with health outcomes such …

The Relationship Of Injury And Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation In Firefighters, Shelby Nicole Conard Jan 2018

The Relationship Of Injury And Cardiorespiratory Fitness And Effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation In Firefighters, Shelby Nicole Conard

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

Quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an essential component in cardiac arrest survival. Research indicates that a first responder’s performance is generally inadequate due to many factors including fatigue or distractions. One factor that has not been studied is prior musculoskeletal injuries. This study aims to determine if a correlation exists between firefighter’s CPR performance, fatigue, and prior musculoskeletal injuries. Twenty-nine urban firefighters participated. Researchers were supplied with basic demographics and a self-reported musculoskeletal injury history through secondary injury questionnaires. Participants performed five rounds of single-rescuer CPR followed by a graded exercise test (GXT), then another set of five rounds of …

Patient Reported Outcomes In A Physically Active Population, Christopher Ryan Peroutka Jan 2018

Patient Reported Outcomes In A Physically Active Population, Christopher Ryan Peroutka

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science

OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of patient-reported outcome measures in the physically active and to determine whether a relationship exists between general health-related quality of life and specific outcome measures. Instruments used were the DPA, the SF-36, the QuickDASH, and the ASES. METHODS: 42 NCAA Division I athletes completed outcome measures three separate times. Repeated-measures ANOVA was performed and bivariate Pearson correlations were calculated. Additionally, test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change were assessed. Significance was set at α ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: Significant relationships were found between the DPA and several subscales of the SF-36. Participation in physical activity did not …

A Lion Or A Shoe: 17-Month-Olds Observing Vs. Acting On An Object In An Object Individuation Task, Savanna Elizabeth Jean Westrom Jellison Jan 2018

A Lion Or A Shoe: 17-Month-Olds Observing Vs. Acting On An Object In An Object Individuation Task, Savanna Elizabeth Jean Westrom Jellison

Human Development and Family Science

Object individuation, the ability to distinguish an object that is currently perceived from one that was previously perceived, is an important cognitive ability used in everyday life. In the current study, we assessed the influence of self-action on infants’ ability to individuate objects. Using a manual search task, we tested eighteen 17- to 18-month-old infants’ ability to individuate objects. Infants either observed as an experimenter hid an object in a covered bucket or they hid the object themselves. The rationale was that if infants perceived the retrieved object as a distinct object from the one hidden, they would continue searching …

An Assessment Of Stone Weapon Tip Standardization During The Clovis-Folsom Transition In The Western United States, B. Buchanan, B. Andrews, Michael J. O'Brien, M. I. Eren Jan 2018

An Assessment Of Stone Weapon Tip Standardization During The Clovis-Folsom Transition In The Western United States, B. Buchanan, B. Andrews, Michael J. O'Brien, M. I. Eren

History Faculty Publications (Archived)

It has long been assumed that Folsom points are more standardized than Clovis points, although an adequate test of this proposition has yet to be undertaken. Here, we address that deficiency by using data from a sample of Folsom and Clovis points recovered from sites across the western United States. We used geometric morphometric techniques to capture point shape and then conducted statistical analyses of variability associated with Clovis and Folsom point bases and blades. Our results demonstrate that Folsom bases and blades are less variable than those on earlier Clovis points, indicating an increase in point standardization during the …

Sports Logistics Outsourcing: A Conceptual And Qualitative Study In The Equine Industry, Stephen E. Genchev, Gordon Gray, Stacia Wert-Gray Jan 2018

Sports Logistics Outsourcing: A Conceptual And Qualitative Study In The Equine Industry, Stephen E. Genchev, Gordon Gray, Stacia Wert-Gray

AMTP Proceedings 2018

The equine industry, despite its considerable impact on the economy, remains overlooked in contemporary supply chain research. The current paper aims at narrowing the gap along two directions: First, the equine industry supply chain is conceptualized, and its main participants and relationships involved are identified. Second, the complex nature of these relationships is illustrated within the context of a specific strategic decision, outsourcing. For years, outsourcing was considered a formal transaction-cost economics decision with little or no consideration for additional factors. This limiting perspective provides the stimulus for the current study’s use of a qualitative approach to get a better …

The content analysis also identified these specific crisis response strategies in the company’s 2015 through 2018 annual reports, press releases and letters to the company shareholders.

Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers Jan 2018

Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) and the Bem Sex Role Index (BSRI), this study addresses the potential impact of societally-created, gendered expectations on the satisfaction of emerging adults. Two hundred twenty-nine undergraduates at a large mid-Atlantic university participated in the study by completing an online survey assessing gender, identity, and a relationship with a close other of their choosing. Results replicate previous research using CTI, which suggests that identity gaps relating to gender are dissatisfying. Specifically, gaps at the personal-enacted, personal-relational, and the newly-created personal-personal levels were negatively related to participant satisfaction, and personal-relational gaps were negatively correlated with …

Understanding Why Women Stay: Examining Persistence Factors Of Women Majoring In Science And Technology Programs In Public Ethiopian Universities Using A Mixed Methods Design, Meseret Hailu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Amongst African nations, Ethiopia is a unique case in many respects. The country has the second largest population on the continent, is currently experiencing an economic boom, and is a relatively stable nation in the geopolitically volatile "Horn of Africa" region. In the past two decades, the higher education sector in Ethiopia has experienced rapid growth, as evidenced by an increase in both student enrollment and the number of universities. Amongst the various types of higher education institutions, public universities are especially important because they receive the greatest financial support from the Ministry of Education. Moreover, science and technology programs …

The Role Of The Gut Microbiota In Sustained Weight Loss Following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, Farnaz Fouladi Jan 2018

The Role Of The Gut Microbiota In Sustained Weight Loss Following Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, Farnaz Fouladi

Pharmacy

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgery is one of the most effective approaches for the treatment of severe obesity. Despite substantial weight loss following RYGB, a considerable proportion of patients experience weight regain or insufficient weight loss. The proposed research aimed to investigate the role of the gut microbiota in weight regain or suboptimal weight loss following RYGB. The gut microbiota composition in post-RYGB patients who experienced successful weight loss (SWL, n=6), post-RYGB patients who experienced poor weight loss (PWL, n=6), and non-surgical controls (NSC, n=6) who were age- and BMI-matched to the SWL group (NSC, n=6) were characterized through 16S …

An Assessment Of Psychological Distress And Resilience Among Nurse Practitioner Students, Carrie Nelson Jan 2018

An Assessment Of Psychological Distress And Resilience Among Nurse Practitioner Students, Carrie Nelson

Nursing

Medical doctors and medical students experience increased prevalence of depression, anxiety, suicidality, suicide, stress, and burnout when compared to the general public. Along with suffering from increased rates of psychosocial distress, medical students and medical doctors often do not seek medical help for their mental health symptoms and are left to suffer in silence. Nurse practitioner students face similar challenges as medical students, yet the literature has not explored the mental health status and needs of nurse practitioner students. Healthcare providers may feel unable to seek help for mental health conditions due to fear of losing their license or fear …

Retail Salesperson’S Influence On India’S Lonely Consumers, Cindy B. Rippé, Brent Smith, Alan J. Dubinsky

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Many consumers in India experience loneliness and social isolation. Some may resort to shopping for a social experience, attempting to mitigate or remedy their situation. Looking to this key emerging market, we investigate how emotional loneliness, social loneliness, and social isolation influence enjoyment of social interaction with an in-store salesperson (ESIS). We also consider whether adaptive selling and predisposition to comply with salesperson input (PCSI) influence consumers’ trust in salesperson, purchase intention, and retail patronage. We utilize partial least squares structural equation modeling with a sample of 303 Indian consumers. Additionally, we provide two importance-performance mapping analyses, which offer additional …

Internal Services Brand Orientation: Comparing The Perspectives Of Managers, Employees, And Customers, Ceren Ekebas-Turedi, Musa Pinar, Paul Trapp, Tulay Girard Jan 2018

Internal Services Brand Orientation: Comparing The Perspectives Of Managers, Employees, And Customers, Ceren Ekebas-Turedi, Musa Pinar, Paul Trapp, Tulay Girard

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Brand orientation plays an important role in creating competitive advantage. The success of a brand depends on the extent of the harmony between managerially advocated brand orientation, effective implementation of the brand orientation by staff, and appreciation of the brand orientation by customers. This requires brand orientation to be implemented during each touch point of the service delivery process, as the delivery of the brand is experienced by consumers in a process of co-creation with the service provider.

To have a successful brand orientation, it is necessary to examine the perceptions of management, contact personnel, and consumers to discover if …

The Role Of Consumer Self-Concept, Gary R. Holmes, Clinton Amos, Lixuan Zhang Jan 2018

The Role Of Consumer Self-Concept, Gary R. Holmes, Clinton Amos, Lixuan Zhang

AMTP Proceedings 2018

The growing shift to niche strategies has created a need for context specific research to address issues faced by today’s marketing manager and to determine whether longstanding consumer self-concept issues are pertinent in niche markets. Regarding the context of retailing and the ability of retailers to serve the desires of individual self-identities, streams of research regarding consumer self-concept, store image, service quality, loyalty, and share of wallet have been prominent in research. However, to the best of our knowledge, these concepts have not been concurrently empirically examined in a niche market context. This study addresses this gap by examining the …

Predicting Turnover Of Direct Sellers, Robert A. Peterson, Gerald Albaum, Victoria L. Crittenden Jan 2018

Predicting Turnover Of Direct Sellers, Robert A. Peterson, Gerald Albaum, Victoria L. Crittenden

AMTP Proceedings 2018

As an industry, direct selling is ubiquitous. An estimated 5.3 million people were direct sellers in the United States in 2016. Of those 5.3 million direct sellers, 4.5 million were part-time and 800,000 were full-time. Moreover, in 2016, direct selling generated an estimated US$35.54 billion in retail sales that, in turn, had a US$83.11 billion impact on the United States economy. In a broad sense, direct selling is simultaneously considered to be a distribution channel, an industry, and a business model. Traditional major modes of direct selling include person-to-person and party-plan selling at a home or in the workplace, with …

Modeling Job Stress Among Police Officers: Interplay Of Work Environment, Counseling Support, And Family Discussion With Co-Workers, Lily Chi-Fang Tsai, Claire Nolasco, Michael S. Vaughn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications (Archived)

Existing literature indicates that various factors affect police stress. This article uses data from the ‘Work and Family Services for Law Enforcement Personnel in the United States, 1995’ downloaded from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (‘ICPSR’) website. Respondents include 594 sworn police officers from 21 agencies in New York City. Using structural equation modeling, results indicate that sex, race, education, and tenure do not have a direct influence on total job stress, but have a direct impact on family discussion with co-workers, counseling support, and negative working environment. Rank has a direct impact on total job stress, …

A New In-Store Digital Landscape: Effect On Engagement, Innovativeness, And Unplanned Grocery Shopping Outcomes, Dale Cake, Vikas Agrawal, Douglas Johansen

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Digital technologies are having a profound effect on the path to purchase in a grocery retail environment. Secondary research data on shopping habits is used to analyze the relationship of consumer digital technology use, a consumer’s innovativeness, and consumer engagement with unplanned grocery shopping behavior within a grocery store environment. Findings indicate that all of three variables have a direct, significant effect on unplanned grocery shopping outcomes and that innovativeness has a direct effect on engagement. Future study will consider the impact of key market segments, shopping situations and digital technology types.

Growing Apart: Collectivism And Acculturation, Sean Sawicki, Sindy Chapa Jan 2018

Growing Apart: Collectivism And Acculturation, Sean Sawicki, Sindy Chapa

AMTP Proceedings 2018

Geert Hofstede’s cultural research serves as a guide to understanding how the different dimensions (collectivism/individualism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity/femininity, indulgence, and short-/long-term orientation) vary between cultures and ethnicities. However, little research exists to show the relationship that exists between acculturation and these dimensions—specifically, with collectivism. Because Hispanics rank exceptionally high with collectivism, this research aims to explore the relationship between acculturation of Hispanics and collectivism. Suggestions as it pertains to findings as well as future research are included.

Counterstories About Leadership: A Latina School Principal’S Experience From A Less Documented View In An Urban School Context, Elizabeth Murakami Ramalho, Frank Hernandez Jan 2018

Counterstories About Leadership: A Latina School Principal’S Experience From A Less Documented View In An Urban School Context, Elizabeth Murakami Ramalho, Frank Hernandez

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications (Archived)

Latina/o school leaders are receiving increasing visibility in research based on their representation in K-12 administrative ranks. However, even though they bring cultural knowledge in providing social and academic support to teachers, families, and especially students of color, their own experiences still reflect less documented histories and contributions because of challenges related to racial identity, racism, sexism, and other historically marginalizing emblems of identity, often invisible in the school leadership research and practice. This study highlights one Latina school leader in the National Latina/o Leadership Study and her experiences developing a professional and racial identity within urban school contexts. Employing …

Construction, Adaptation, And Preservation Of Earth Homes On The Northern Plains, Robert Kevin Kurtz Jan 2018

Construction, Adaptation, And Preservation Of Earth Homes On The Northern Plains, Robert Kevin Kurtz

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

The earth home, in its many varieties and styles, played an important role in the development of the American Great Plains during the mid-nineteenth century. However, the lack of further study into the material culture of these homes has allowed many of these homes to be misrepresented in the historical record as temporary shelters. Not all of the earth homes constructed during this period were temporary. Further study of the materials used, the locations in which they were built, and their construction methods suggest that many of these homes were built to last. The three case studies used in this …

“Read And Be Convinced”: The Image Of The Nonpartisan League In Its Creative Production, The Early Histories, And Wider Popular Culture, John Hest Jan 2018

“Read And Be Convinced”: The Image Of The Nonpartisan League In Its Creative Production, The Early Histories, And Wider Popular Culture, John Hest

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

In this thesis, I examine the image of the Nonpartisan League in several different contexts, arguing that the League carefully crafted their advocative political image and their opponents painted them as disloyal socialists. The Nonpartisan League was an agrarian radical political movement beginning in North Dakota in 1915, and both its proponents and opponents created powerful images of it. I first examine the creative output of two Leaguers, the poet Florence Borner and the cartoonist John Miller Baer. I then transition to four competing histories of the Nonpartisan League, published from 1920-21, by Herbert Gaston, Charles Edward Russell, William Langer, …

Katharina Schütz Zell: The Religious Vocation Of A Female Reformer In Sixteenth-Century Strasbourg, Samantha Howard Jan 2018

Katharina Schütz Zell: The Religious Vocation Of A Female Reformer In Sixteenth-Century Strasbourg, Samantha Howard

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

Katharina Schütz Zell lived in the free imperial city of Strasbourg during the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century. Commitment to a lifelong faith led Katharina to embrace early protestant beliefs: salvation by faith and grace, the sole authority of Scripture, and the priesthood of all believers. In 1524, she joined the reform movement and began sharing her beliefs. This study argues that Katharina Schütz Zell established herself as a reformer who served God through Christ with love and compassion. Katharina’s early writings convey her steadfast values of Christian living. In times of chaos and uncertainty, her unwavering faith provided …

Determining Women’S Innermost Social Support Relationships, Delrae Ruth Chivers Jan 2018

Determining Women’S Innermost Social Support Relationships, Delrae Ruth Chivers

Sociology and Anthropology

This thesis examined how single women over forty determine their innermost social support relationship. A qualitative study of personal in-depth interviews was conducted with twelve single women ranging in ages 41 to 95 living in a small community in the United States upper Midwest area. The data gathered from the interviews reveal what fosters these women’s close relationships, specifically, those borne out of common situations, shared interests, and/or similar experiences. The data disclose what it is in their relationships that matters to them, illuminating dimensions that sustain closeness. Important aspects of their relationships include affection and reverence for each other …

Building A Promise Neighborhood From The Inside Out: A Springfield, Ohio Experiment With Asset-Based Community Development, Eric Robert Smith Jan 2018

Building A Promise Neighborhood From The Inside Out: A Springfield, Ohio Experiment With Asset-Based Community Development, Eric Robert Smith

Sociology and Anthropology

This paper examines the impact of the Springfield Promise Neighborhood (SPN) initiative on the City of Springfield, Ohio. Launched in August, 2010, SPN adopted an asset-based and resident-driven strategy to transform vulnerable neighborhoods by ensuring the academic and social success of the youth within a defined geographic locality. SPN was conceived as an initiative that would eventually impact all of Springfield by engaging citizens and youth to envision and achieve a preferred future story. The early piloting of the model has taken place in partnership with Lincoln Elementary School and its attendance zone, which represents a 110-block area surrounding the …

Event, Death, And Poetry: The Death Of The Other In Derrida’S “Rams”, Harris B. Bechtol Jan 2018

Event, Death, And Poetry: The Death Of The Other In Derrida’S “Rams”, Harris B. Bechtol

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

Since Heidegger, at least, the theme of the event has become a focal point of current debate in continental philosophy. While scholars recognize the important contributions that Jacques Derrida has made to this debate, the significance of his considerations of the death of the other for his conception of the event has not yet been fully appreciated. This essay focuses on Derrida’s efforts to develop the notion of the event in reference to the death of the other through his engagement with Paul Celan in “Rams—Between Two Infinities, The Poem.” I argue that Derrida’s approach results in a three-fold contribution …

Health Risk Feedback: The Effects Of Ace Insight On Stress Reactivity, Heidi Anna Rued Jan 2018

Health Risk Feedback: The Effects Of Ace Insight On Stress Reactivity, Heidi Anna Rued

Psychology

Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has lasting repercussions throughout an individual’s lifetime. An adult with a history of childhood trauma is at increased risk for excessive stress reactivity, which exacerbates the development of chronic disease. It is important to investigate how this information can be used for adult trauma survivors. This study assessed the psychophysiological impacts of providing “ACE insight”. Participants completed questionnaires and were given false feedback that their childhood experiences put them at increased risk for excessive stress reactivity and the development of disease. Following ACE insight, participants underwent a speech stressor task during which cardiovascular reactivity …

On Distance Perception, Shanda Deleen Lauer Jan 2018

On Distance Perception, Shanda Deleen Lauer

Psychology

A crucial, but little studied, visual function involves estimating distance from the self to an object in the environment (absolute distance perception). This is a fundamental component in the creation of our perception of the 3D world and is likely to be affected by alcohol, and be a factor in drunk driving accidents. To better understand which visual cues observers use to determine distance, participants completed a series of psychophysical judgments under different viewing conditions. By controlling and isolating specific distance cues through a novel viewing apparatus, we were able to investigate which cues are used to accurately judge distance. …

Changing Dating Behavior Expectations By Using Judgmental Anchors To Induce Cognitive Dissonance, Anna Maruska Semanko Jan 2018

Changing Dating Behavior Expectations By Using Judgmental Anchors To Induce Cognitive Dissonance, Anna Maruska Semanko

Psychology

This study expanded upon literature separately examining numerical anchors and cognitive dissonance, by attempting to use numerical anchors to induce cognitive dissonance and change dating behavior expectations. The high numerical anchors had an effect on dating behavior expectations, such that the expectations assimilated in a healthier direction toward the anchor value. The dissonance manipulation resulted in higher levels of psychological discomfort, as measured by the scale created for this thesis. Further, an exploration of assessing magnitude of dissonance and an examination of the theoretical antecedents of dating behavior intentions was conducted. Overall, future dating behavior intentions for respect, trust, communication …

The Effects Of Reattribution Training And Behavioral Activation On Cognitive Vulnerabilities To Depression Among College Students, Samantha Kathleen Myhre

Psychology

Depression among adolescents and college students comes with significant negative impacts on multiple areas of functioning as well as burdens on society. It is important to understand what makes young people vulnerable to experiencing depression as well as how to prevent it. This study intended to compare cognitive and behavioral skills training to determine their effect on cognitive vulnerabilities to depression. Participants who have never been depressed were recruited based on high levels of cognitive vulnerabilities to depression. They were randomized to a cognitive condition, a behavioral condition, or a waitlist condition. Pre-, post-, and follow-up measures were collected including …
