Bridging The Gap Of Age And Awkwardness: Improving Geriatric Sex Education, Anne Watson
Bridging The Gap Of Age And Awkwardness: Improving Geriatric Sex Education, Anne Watson
University Honors Program
Improving geriatric sex education is not a common thought for many Americans, but with a quickly growing population it may soon become a common topic for discussion. Discomfort, awkwardness, and lack of communication often keep health care providers and physicians from discussing sexual health with their elderly patients. These limitations are significantly impairing physicians and health care providers from educating their patients about their sexual health and addressing any concern the patient might have about their sexuality. Sexual health in geriatrics is a growing concern among many health care fields today as the elderly are participating in risky sexual behaviors …

The ‘Right’ Side Of Creativity: Creative Personality And Social Risk-Taking Predict Political Party Affiliation, V Tyagi, Y Hanoch, B Choma, Sl Denham
School of Psychology
Factors that predict political party affiliation are of particular importance in research due to the wider implications in politics and policy making. Extending this line of work, the idea that creativity predicts party affiliation was tested using 2 conceptualizations of creativity: creative personality and creative ideation. Participants (N = 406) based in the United States completed measures of creativity, socio-political attitudes, and domain specific risk-taking, and indicated their party affiliation. Results revealed a significant link between creative personality and political party affiliation. Furthermore, in addition to the socio-political attitudes, this link was explained, in part, by individuals’ social risk-taking. Specifically, …

Surviving Domestic Violence In An Indian-Australian Household: An Autoethnography Of Resilience, Amar Freya
Surviving Domestic Violence In An Indian-Australian Household: An Autoethnography Of Resilience, Amar Freya
The Qualitative Report
This study explores how my personal experiences with domestic violence in my family have shaped my identity and my current self as an Indian-Australian woman, teacher, and researcher. Domestic violence touches many children and their families and affects their sense of identity and belonging as individuals and in their social spaces. An autoethnographical method is used to investigate my experiences within a domestically violent family and how it has shaped my identity as an Indian-Australian woman. The study reveals various themes including three themes that were noted to be the most significant: patriarchy in Indian culture, resilience, identity and belonging. …
The Narrowing Of Academic Accounting: The Diminishing Range Of Doctoral Student Interest, Timothy J. Fogarty
The Narrowing Of Academic Accounting: The Diminishing Range Of Doctoral Student Interest, Timothy J. Fogarty
The North American Accounting Studies
Accounting doctoral education has been the subject of many conversations. Whether it supports the optimal development of the knowledge that we need in this discipline should be debated. For the most part, the content of that which is taught in these programs and what specific scholarly output they facilitate is generally considered to be outside the bounds of academic discussion. This paper questions such a boundary by studying the research interests of three cohorts of doctoral students in the midst of their career preparation. The empirical evidence assembled suggests that doctoral education in accounting has become much more narrow a …
Barriers To Mental Health Service Access At A Large Public University, Auburn Beebe
Barriers To Mental Health Service Access At A Large Public University, Auburn Beebe
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
College students are dealing with serious mental health issues and represent an important population to access when providing mental health services. Though most universities provide free mental health counseling services, many students are unaware or reluctant to use those services. Many factors contribute to this reluctance such as lack of knowledge about services and perceived stigma. Though many studies have shown that women are both diagnosed with anxiety and depression more often than men as well as seek mental health counseling more than men, few have identified the reasons for this disparity and examined the gender differences in collegiate men …

The Constituent Women Of Violence Against Women, Wilmer Morales, Jocelyn Martinez, Samantha Amaro
Violence Against Women conference
The Violence against Women Initiative is a very important framework in a time in which women need a platform to be able to discuss the problems and inequality they face in society. Throughout history women have been demonized, abuse, and treated unfairly, which has affected the way women respond to acts of violence. However, recent events have allowed women to gain the courage to stand against acts including verbal, physical, emotional, and psychological abuse. Society, in general, has to be educated and be made aware of how to respond and meticulously act during events that violate the rights of women, …

Lockett Symposium: Lockett As It Was, Is Now, And Ever Shall Should Be, Karen A. Steele
ConLawNOW
Lockett made clear what was constitutionally unacceptable in capital sentencing statutes (limiting the range of mitigating factors to be considered) while affirmatively heralding the significance and breadth of mitigating factors unique to the defendant that must be affirmatively and independently considered by jurors, courts and counsel; the inverse correlation between mitigating factors and disproportionate sentencing; and the interrelationship between mitigating factors and narrowing—all in an effort to provide a “meaningful basis for distinguishing the few cases in which the death penalty is imposed from the many cases in which it is not.” The threatened and actual use of “double-edged” aspects …
What About Students’ Experiences: (Re)Imagining Success Through Photovoice At A High-Achieving Urban “No-Excuses” Charter School, L. Trenton S. Marsh
What About Students’ Experiences: (Re)Imagining Success Through Photovoice At A High-Achieving Urban “No-Excuses” Charter School, L. Trenton S. Marsh
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
The article highlights the use of photovoice, a method that gives power to creators of images to capture experiences that are central to their life. Students verbal considerations of success in the context of the “no-excuses” school is included, as is a sample of students’ visual data about what success is outside of the “no-excuses” context. The study reveals the “no-excuses” orientation fosters an oppressive definition of success in the context of classrooms. However, the photovoice component reveals students are able to resist the limited view as four emergent findings reveal how students make meaning of success: (1) human connection; …
Settler Colonial Legacies: Indigenous Student Reflections On K-12 Social Studies Curriculum, Stephanie Masta
Settler Colonial Legacies: Indigenous Student Reflections On K-12 Social Studies Curriculum, Stephanie Masta
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
This article explores how Indigenous students make meaning of the dominant structure of settler colonialism within their K-12 academic experiences. I build on previous work done on settler colonial ideology by linking structural forms of settler colonial power to the lived experiences of Indigenous students, and using their voices to describe how pervasive settler colonial ideology is in practice. Through their descriptions of the curriculum narratives in K-12, the participants create a compelling image of the influence of settler colonialism in their educational experiences. Confronting settler colonial ideology is not just about providing a more accurate historical record of what …

Breaking The Silence: Discussions About Disability, Sex, & Gender Identity, Janet Sauer, Kirsten Bond, Cassidy Donahue, Molly Wolber, Hannah Hunter, Elizabeth Bellin, Katherine Deluga
Violence Against Women conference
Silence often accompanies topics about disability, sexuality, and gender identity. This panel of Lesley students, alumni, and faculty discuss the issue of silence involving social stigma and ignorance that can often lead to violence against people with disabilities. The panelists participated in an interdisciplinary course, Disability Studies, in which students chose to research these topics for their social action projects and papers. Panelists who see themselves as allies and/or self-identify as disabled share their research, personal experiences, and interviews with the audience to provide insights into some of the systematic exclusion of people with disabilities in these discussions, particularly in …

Sexual Violence Against Women In An Armed Conflict, Nowsheen Altaf Dar, Benish Mehraj
Violence Against Women conference
Documentation of life under militarization has mostly been done by “men writing about men.” The need to have a gendered perspective of conflict and war was only recently introduced in the academic discourse after the collective violence against the women of Bosnia and Rwanda in the 1990s was given the attention it deserved by the international media. In Kashmir, women are subjected to violence through physical, sexual, and mental harassments. The very nature of the conflict has pushed Kashmiri women to the wall, putting the burden of violence on their shoulders. Women face physical and sexual assault at checkpoints, during …
Introduction: Yeats And Mass Communications, David Dwan, Emilie Morin
Introduction: Yeats And Mass Communications, David Dwan, Emilie Morin
International Yeats Studies
W. B. Yeats’s pursuit of an audience led him into the world of mass media—a landscape populated first by newspapers and later by radios, which he learned to navigate with shrewdness and skill. The purpose of this special issue is to examine Yeats’s various ventures in mass communication. Enlisting a broad range of critical approaches, contributors to this volume show how the demands of print journalism and radio broadcasting informed Yeats’s poetics, his thinking about the social vocation of art, and his ideas about how literature might be best received and structured. The essays also examine the reception and legacies …

Parenting In Low-Income Context: Assessment Of A Psychosocial Group Intervention In Brazil, Mariana Juras, L. Costa
Parenting In Low-Income Context: Assessment Of A Psychosocial Group Intervention In Brazil, Mariana Juras, L. Costa
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
This article aims to evaluate the methodology of a psychosocial group intervention with low-income separated parents with small children in Brazil, which focused on the differentiation of marital and parental roles after the separation. This pilot study based on the research-action epistemology included mixed-methods of qualitative and quantitative instruments to collect data while providing the interventions to the participants. The intervention consisted in individual interviews followed by seven biweekly group sessions to address separation related issues. Besides these data, pre- and post-group questionnaires were also compared. Seven separated parents participated in the individual interviews, but only three participated on the group …
Importance Of Grandparents To Their Grandchildren, Stephen F. Duncan
Importance Of Grandparents To Their Grandchildren, Stephen F. Duncan
Forever Families
Research suggests that children find unique acceptance in their relationships with grandparents, which benefits them emotionally and mentally. Grandparents can be a major support during family disruptions. Sometimes they're playmates for their grandchildren. They're very often role models and mentors for younger generations. They are also historians -- teaching values, instilling ethnic heritage and passing on family traditions.

Separations, Connections, And Boundaries: Important Knowledge For Married Couples And Their Parents, Joseph Ransom, Stephen F. Duncan
Forever Families
The issues that are present in the preceding situations all stem from a common source: the lack of proper familial connections and boundaries. Religion and family science have both agreed on this issue. In Genesis 2:24, the Judeo-Christian religious tradition mentions that a man and woman must separate and establish themselves as a married couple. Wallerstein also states that a person must separate themselves from their family of origin and create a new identity as a married person.1 Neither of these sources indicates that one is to completely cut off the connection with their families of origin. On the …

Getting Involved With Your Nieces And Nephews, Kaitlin M. Miller, Stephen F. Duncan
Forever Families
We all have a family. Even if not all of us are married or have children, many of us have siblings who do have children. We can create relationships with our nieces and nephews to become close to them, and to help our brothers and sisters with family difficulties. The Family: A Proclamation to the World states that "Extended families should lend support when needed." Through the unique relationship that exists between aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews, there are many things that you can do to be a positive influence in your niece or nephew's life.

Forever Families
The Family: A Proclamation to the World calls upon extended family members to lend support to other family members when needed. Grandparents have a great opportunity to support their grandchildren, and in fact do much parenting of these children in their own right.

Diversity And Inclusion In The Science Classroom, Sowmya Anjur
Faculty Publications & Research
A Diversity, Epidemiology and social justice unit was incorporated into the Physiology and Disease curriculum in Fall 2016. Students discussed topics such as social and cultural influences on diversity thinking, and selective treatment in hospitals based on race. It was very noteworthy that students were united in their thinking regarding diversity and inclusion, despite the fact that they were from different backgrounds and diverse cultures. In 2017, additional discussions were held on equity in education. Students who were otherwise reserved were encouraged enough to express their views, and everyone appreciated the fact that they had been included.

Analysis Of Environment-Marker Associations In American Chestnut, Markus Müller, Charles Dana Nelson, Oliver Gailing
Analysis Of Environment-Marker Associations In American Chestnut, Markus Müller, Charles Dana Nelson, Oliver Gailing
Forest Health Research and Education Center Faculty Publications
American chestnut (Castanea dentata Borkh.) was a dominant tree species in its native range in eastern North America until the accidentally introduced fungus Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr, that causes chestnut blight, led to a collapse of the species. Different approaches (e.g., genetic engineering or conventional breeding) are being used to fight against chestnut blight and to reintroduce the species with resistant planting stock. Because of large climatic differences within the distribution area of American chestnut, successful reintroduction of the species requires knowledge and consideration of local adaptation to the prevailing environmental conditions. Previous studies revealed clear patterns of genetic …
Conditional Independence In A Binary Choice Experiment, Nathaniel Wilcox
Conditional Independence In A Binary Choice Experiment, Nathaniel Wilcox
ESI Working Papers
Experimental and behavioral economists, as well as psychologists, commonly assume conditional independence of choices when constructing likelihood functions for structural estimation. I test this assumption using data from a new experiment designed for this purpose. Within the limits of the experiment’s identifying restriction and designed power to detect deviations from conditional independence, conditional independence is not rejected. In naturally occurring data, concerns about violations of conditional independence are certainly proper and well-taken (for well-known reasons). However, when an experimenter employs contemporary state-of-the-art experimental mechanisms and designs, the current evidence suggests that conditional independence is an acceptable assumption for analyzing data …
