Personal Commitment Statements In Evaluating Continuing Education: Evolutionary Practice, Juan Bornman, Brenda Louw
Personal Commitment Statements In Evaluating Continuing Education: Evolutionary Practice, Juan Bornman, Brenda Louw
ETSU Faculty Works
The use of a Commitment-to-Change (CTC) statement to evaluate Continuing Education was investigated through a case study design. A CE event on communication disorders within the ICF-CY framework was evaluated by a Personal Commitment form and a follow-up survey. Results of a thematic analysis of statements and follow-up survey illustrate the important potential of this evolutionary approach.
Delphi Survey Of Maintenance Lithium Treatment In Older Adults With Bipolar Disorder: An Isbd Task Force Report, Martha Sajatovic
Delphi Survey Of Maintenance Lithium Treatment In Older Adults With Bipolar Disorder: An Isbd Task Force Report, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Objectives: Despite the growing numbers and proportion of older adults with bipolar disorder (OABD), there are very limited guidelines for the use of lithium with its double-edged potential for effectiveness and toxicity in this population. The primary aims of this Delphi survey were: (a) To determine the place of lithium among the preferred choices for maintenance treatment of OABD. (b) To provide detailed clinical guidelines for the safe and effective use of lithium in OABD. Methods: In the face of limited evidence, the Delphi survey method was used to achieve consensus by a group of 25 experts in OABD from …
Effects Of A Visual Artwork Intervention And Personal Progress Factors On Maternal Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among Black Women, Erika L. Gathron
Effects Of A Visual Artwork Intervention And Personal Progress Factors On Maternal Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among Black Women, Erika L. Gathron
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is the recommended guideline, and the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding is a top priority for both national and international health organizations. The benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and baby reduces the burden of health disparity and promotes long-term healthful outcomes. Continued rates of low breastfeeding among Black women has brought forth the need for a methodological paradigm shift that enables nurses and researchers to explore creative, evidence-based, culturally relevant and population-specific interventions to enhance breastfeeding among Black women. This dissertation is an exploration of the use of art images of …

Teacher Attitude And Self-Efficacy Differences Regarding English Language Learners And Disabled Learners., Miriam Carballo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There has been little research combining both groups of students who were English Language Learners (ELLs) and Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students in relation to teacher attitudes and self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to compare teacher attitudes and self-efficacy related to instructing either ELLs with or without disabilities in elementary schools
Teachers from six elementary schools in the XYZ Excellence School District participated in a 52-item comprehensive survey. Two questionnaires and the demographic form were combined to create one comprehensive questionnaire totaling 52 questions for the purposes of this study. Teachers were solicited to participate in the study …
The Impact Of Digital Marketing Decisions On Market Outcomes In Residential Real Estate, Denise Hunter Gravatt
The Impact Of Digital Marketing Decisions On Market Outcomes In Residential Real Estate, Denise Hunter Gravatt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the competitive and fast-paced industry of residential real estate, digital marketing strategies must effectively meet the information needs and demands of the industry’s three key stakeholders: buyers, sellers, and agents. Digital house hunting is the predominant search strategy for prospective homebuyers who scour the Internet looking for homes to purchase. Property sellers and real estate professionals, whose shared end-goal is to transact a successful sale, must discern which digital marketing choices are optimal for marketing for-sale properties online in the digital channels where buyers are searching.

Naturalizing Knowledge: The Project Of Evolutionary Epistemology, Dmitriy Cherchenko
Naturalizing Knowledge: The Project Of Evolutionary Epistemology, Dmitriy Cherchenko
University Honors Theses
Traditional epistemology deals with questions about the possible sources of knowledge, the conditions which make a belief an item of knowledge, and the extent to which we can know, as well as the nature of justification and what can make a belief justified for someone. Evolutionary epistemology (EE) breaks from TE to avoid its perceived shortcomings by both dismissing some traditional questions and emphasizing new, related questions that are more readily answerable given what we know about the biology and phylogenetic history of humans. The new questions assume that we are physical, naturally evolved beings and that cognition can be …
Breaking Binary Being In The Future Fiction Of Star Trek, Jeremiah D. Ackerman
Breaking Binary Being In The Future Fiction Of Star Trek, Jeremiah D. Ackerman
University Honors Theses
Understanding "gender" is more complicated than traditional views of the male sex equating to being a man, and female sex equating to being a woman. This gender binary coding does not accurately represent a large number of people who identify as agender (not of a gender), or gender-fluid (not having a fixed gender.) I am investigating to what extent Star Trek (which is a science fiction often accredited with the premise of representing humanity's more equitable future society) reproduces traditional gender roles or offers alternate gender identities. I look at literature from other scholars about gender performances in Star Trek …
Risk Communication In Lactation Consulting, Stephanie Elliott
Risk Communication In Lactation Consulting, Stephanie Elliott
University Honors Theses
Breastfeeding has well-established benefits for lifelong health, and public health initiatives have long concerned themselves with increasing breastfeeding rates. There is a debate within the lactation community about whether breastfeeding promotion should emphasize the benefits of breastfeeding or the risks of formula feeding. Benefit-based messaging is the established norm in both public health campaigns and interpersonal counseling by health professionals. Proponents of risk-based messaging point to breastfeeding as the biological norm and argue that formula feeding should always be situated against the norm of breastfeeding. In order to understand the philosophical underpinnings of risk-messaging, the efficacy of each method, and …
Socialsibs: Effects Of Hybrid Sibling-Mediated Intervention On Joint Attention For Children With Asd And Their Neurotypical Siblings, Kali E. Mccafferty
Socialsibs: Effects Of Hybrid Sibling-Mediated Intervention On Joint Attention For Children With Asd And Their Neurotypical Siblings, Kali E. Mccafferty
University Honors Theses
Joint attention (JA) is an individual’s ability to share attention on an object or event with another person. JA has been identified as a core deficit for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Prior research has begun to explore how social communication interventions can affect joint attention skills for school aged children with ASD. The study at hand aimed to expand upon this area of scholarship by examining the effects of a social communication intervention, SocialSibs, that combined two evidence-based methods: video modeling (VM); and sibling-mediation; within the framework of Pivotal Response Teaching (PRT). Nineteen sibling dyads underwent the ten-week …
Social Transmission Of Ethanol Preference In A Sign-Tracking Paradigm, Pat Severino
Social Transmission Of Ethanol Preference In A Sign-Tracking Paradigm, Pat Severino
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Observer/ Demonstrator Effect suggests that rats can socially obtain preferences for novel foods/drugs by interacting with experienced conspecifics. Sign-tracking is a paradigm which uses a conditioning procedure to evoke compulsive-like behaviors directed towards a tangible conditioned stimulus (CS) paired with a motivating unconditioned stimulus (US). The present study investigated the possibility that increased alcohol use results from the combination of socially transmitted cues and the kind of conditioning effect seen in sign-tracking procedures. Therefore, it was hypothesized that social exposure to an alcohol-experienced conspecific would summate with the conditioning experience and increase the sign-tracking of a bottle CS containing …
Socializing Public Space: Benches In The Urban Setting, Kelsey I. Sagrero
Socializing Public Space: Benches In The Urban Setting, Kelsey I. Sagrero
University Honors Theses
Outdoor public space is essential to a healthy city and society. A component of such spaces are areas for staying, where people can either watch the world go by or explicitly interact with others. However, recent bureaucratic trends target and remove seating areas, such as benches, in an attempt to remove loitering, houseless activity and crimes. This public life study tries to better understand how benches are used in the public urban setting, by observing how people interact with the design of the space itself and with one another in three different locations in downtown Portland, Oregon. It is hoped …
Understanding Self-Constitution, Winston Meier
Understanding Self-Constitution, Winston Meier
University Honors Theses
Contemporary analytic philosophers posit that selves are continuous mental entities by virtue of their ability to arrange their life’s episodes into a narrative. A self must connect diachronically to episodes in their remembered past or imagined future, and impose upon these episodes a structure that resembles a traditional story arc. Proponents of the ethical Narrativity thesis (ENT) argue that this exercise is not only necessary for continuity, but that it is vital for one to have meaning, agency and coherence in their lived experience. Galen Strawson, among others who reject the ENT, posit that one can lead a rewarding, structured …

Learning In The Margins: The Educational Experiences Of An African American Male With Disabilities, Aisha Holmes
Learning In The Margins: The Educational Experiences Of An African American Male With Disabilities, Aisha Holmes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
African American males with disabilities meet challenges in K-12 public education and higher education. Educational practices often focus on a deficit interpretation of the abilities of African American males with disabilities. Educational stakeholders who do not reflect their layered identities of race, gender, ability, and socioeconomic status often make educational decisions for this student population. The purpose of this study is to include in the educational conversations the voice of an African American male with disabilities who experienced K-12 public education and higher education. Using narrative inquiry and analyzed through the lens of DisCrit, findings from the study revealed two …

An Examination Of The Progressive And Regressive Factors That Business Owners Consider When Choosing Whether Or Not To Implement An Exit Strategy, David C. Pickard
An Examination Of The Progressive And Regressive Factors That Business Owners Consider When Choosing Whether Or Not To Implement An Exit Strategy, David C. Pickard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This purpose of this dissertation is to examine the progressive and regressive factors that affect a small business owner’s decision to implement an exit strategy. An exit strategy can be defined as an entrepreneur's strategic plan to sell his or her investment in a company he or she has controlling interest in. An exit strategy gives a business owner a way to reduce or eliminate his or her stake in the business and, if the business is successful, make a substantial profit. Exiting a business is a complicated process which includes among other things, the evaluation, preparation, marketing, and ultimate …
Vulnerability And Power: Exploring The Confluence Of Politics And Climate Change In Cortez, Florida, Justin P. Winn
Vulnerability And Power: Exploring The Confluence Of Politics And Climate Change In Cortez, Florida, Justin P. Winn
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes how politics shape vulnerability to climate change at the local level, based on an ethnography in Cortez, Florida. Focusing on a “traditional” commercial fishing village on the Florida Gulf Coast, my research indicates that such vulnerabilities are created at multiple scales of the nexus between governance and commerce. Moreover, a key finding is that, as a community closely linked to the health of local environments, the village in Cortez is largely organized to protect their commercial industry from regional economic overdevelopment; not in recognition of its role in contributing to global climate change, but because such overdevelopment …
Above And Within, Caitlin Cronin
Above And Within, Caitlin Cronin
B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)
Above and Within
Caitlin Cronin
I am composing delicate forms in expansive spaces. These forms are present and responsive, like human figures existing in an atmosphere. The spaces of my paintings are tangible and subjective, almost as if to question whether the subjects in the space are truly alone.
The subjects that I compose in the atmospheres I create conjure memories and feelings based on their color, texture, posture, age, or aesthetic. As the expansive spaces created surround these delicate forms, I seek to convey a feeling of solitude and mystery as the vulnerable beings are embraced by the space …

Connecting Response To Intervention And Grade Retention: Implications For School Leaders, Bret G. Range, Dorothy Jean Yocom
Connecting Response To Intervention And Grade Retention: Implications For School Leaders, Bret G. Range, Dorothy Jean Yocom
School Leadership Review
Within all classrooms of public schools, teachers greet general education students acknowledging broad differences in their learning readiness and social skills (Fuchs, Fuchs, & Compton, 2010; Martin, 2010). The needs of some students may be so diverse that educators find implementing differentiated instructional strategies with integrity extremely difficult. Many individually research-based strategies have been implemented to provide helpful instruction to all learners. This paper presents the concept of a merger between two of these strategies: Response to Intervention (RTI) and grade retention. As a result, the conceptual framework for this manuscript is anchored within the RTI and grade retention literatures, …

Leadership For The Long-Haul: The Impact Of Administrator Longevity On Student Achievement, W. Sean Kearney, Albert Valadez, Larry Garcia
School Leadership Review
The average turnover of the principal position at public schools in the state of Texas is 3 ½ years (Fuller, Young, & Shoho, 2010). This fact raises a number of important questions. Perhaps the most important of which is also the simplest – So what? Does principal turnover matter? What is the impact of high principal turnover? Does this leadership shuffle lead to lower test scores? This study was conducted in order to find out.

Effective Instructional Tools Or Costly Distractions: An Examination On The Effective Implementation Of Technology In The Classroom, Jonathon Archer, Alison Childs, Sharon Covaciu, Chad Deyoung
School Leadership Review
Technological advances have proliferated in the workplace, our daily lives, and even in the area of research. With each passing day different forms of technology are becoming increasingly available to people all around the world. The quick influx of technology has resulted in little time for technological professional development in the field of education. Although the majority of today’s youth have grown up in a technological world, the adults educating these students have little exposure and understanding of these new advances (Christensen & Knezek, 1999).
Scaffolding For Optimal Challenge In K–12 Problem-Based Learning, Nam Ju Kim, Brian R. Belland, Daryl Axelrod
Scaffolding For Optimal Challenge In K–12 Problem-Based Learning, Nam Ju Kim, Brian R. Belland, Daryl Axelrod
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Establishing optimal challenge enhances intrinsic motivation, interest, and the probability of success in the learning activity. In K–12 problem-based learning (PBL), students may struggle to address associated tasks that are beyond their current ability levels. This paper suggested learner-centered scaffolding systems (LSS) to improve K–12 students’ perception of optimal challenge by addressing their learning issues in PBL. LSS enhances students’ experience in autonomy and competence by providing multiple types of scaffolding in accordance with students’ different needs and difficulties in PBL. Students can control the nature and frequency of scaffolding by themselves according to their needs and ability, and it …
Dennis Littky, The Educational Activist: Can His Model Revamp The Public Educational System?, Dana Mitchell Barnes
Dennis Littky, The Educational Activist: Can His Model Revamp The Public Educational System?, Dana Mitchell Barnes
School Leadership Review
When an individual observes a classroom of today, he will see many elements that are recognizable to anyone who attended school during the last one hundred years, students working from textbooks, repetitive worksheets, and rows of desks holding students completing tasks directed by the teacher. Even though societal and technological advancements are increasing rapidly, our school system has stayed stagnant. What this means for students is the lack of individuality, teachers’ non acceptance of personal interests, lack of personal voice, and in many cases, a non relationship between teacher and student beyond the classroom assignment (Castleman & Littky, 2007).
