The Relationship Between Alcohol Beverage Types And Violence, Aleksandra J. Snowden Nov 2018

The Relationship Between Alcohol Beverage Types And Violence, Aleksandra J. Snowden

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

There is substantial evidence of an ecological association between off-premise alcohol outlets and violence. We know less, however, about how specific beverage types that are sold in the outlets might explain the difference in violence rates across different alcohol outlets. Data on alcohol beverage types were collected for all off-premise alcohol outlets in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, using a systematic social observation instrument. Spatially lagged regression models were estimated to determine whether the variation in alcohol beverage types is related to robbery density net of important neighborhood predictors of crime rates. Availability of all alcohol beverage types (beer, wine, spirits, premixed, single …

Enhancing Meaning-Making In Research Through Sensory Engagement With Material Objects, Susan Cox, Marilys Guillemin Nov 2018

Enhancing Meaning-Making In Research Through Sensory Engagement With Material Objects, Susan Cox, Marilys Guillemin

The Qualitative Report

There has been increasing awareness and interest in the role of the senses in qualitative research. We build on this work by focusing on the use of material objects in research. Using material objects in qualitative research, particularly those selected by research participants, offers a different kind of engagement that can add richness and complexity to the knowledge generated. Material objects can either be participant-selected or researcher-selected, each having its own benefits and challenges. Using examples, we explore how participants sensorially engage with these objects, using visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile means. This engagement with material objects, particularly those that …

Risk Factor And High-Risk Place Variations Across Different Robbery Targets In Denver, Colorado, Nathan T. Connealy, Eric L. Piza

Publications and Research

Purpose

Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) has been effectively used to spatially diagnose risk for crimes such as robbery, aggravated assault, and gun violence. An important contribution is to consider how risk differs across individual crimes and different target types. This study tests four different robbery target types in unique models to examine the potential for variation across significant risk factors and high-risk locations.

Methods

Using the online diagnostic software RTMDx, individual robbery models were run for four robbery target types in Denver, Colorado: commercial (businesses), carjacking (driver/vehicle), residential (home/dwelling), and street (pedestrians). A conjunctive analysis of case configurations was also …

Security Mechanisms On Web-Based Exams In Introductory Statistics Community College Courses, Yelena Feinman Nov 2018

Security Mechanisms On Web-Based Exams In Introductory Statistics Community College Courses, Yelena Feinman

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The credibility of unsupervised online exams is an ongoing concern in higher education. Proctoring, in the form of physical or remote supervision, has been the main mechanism for maintaining academic integrity. However, both forms of proctoring are expensive and inconvenient. Several researchers have examined security mechanisms as a substitute for proctoring and obtained mixed results. This article describes a quasi-experimental study, the main goal of which was to examine the effectiveness of nonbiometric security mechanisms. The security mechanisms were selected based on the taxonomy of cheating reduction techniques rooted in the fraud triangle theory. The security mechanisms were considered effective …

Investigating Time During Residential Program Until Transition For Adjudicated Youth: A Mixed Methods Study Using Event History Analysis With Follow-Up Interviews, Emily Carol Lott Nov 2018

Investigating Time During Residential Program Until Transition For Adjudicated Youth: A Mixed Methods Study Using Event History Analysis With Follow-Up Interviews, Emily Carol Lott

Dissertations and Theses

Residential placement is considered the most severe sanction for adjudicated youth, yet there is little consensus on best practices and interventions in residential settings. Demographic trends in the juvenile justice system further exacerbate challenges in studying residential placements. Disparities among minority youth, diverging state definitions of juvenile sex offenses, discrepancies in recidivism measures, and variations in local and state juvenile courts have contributed to a convoluted system that has struggled to identify the meaning of "success" in residential settings.

Building on theories of engagement in residential care and program theory of change, this mixed methods study explores how various components …

Development And Cost-Effectiveness Of A Malnutrition Screening Program In A Skilled Nursing Setting, Emily Salas-Groves Nov 2018

Development And Cost-Effectiveness Of A Malnutrition Screening Program In A Skilled Nursing Setting, Emily Salas-Groves

Master's Theses

Malnutrition increases the cost of healthcare and is commonly unrecognized and untreated. These facts are especially true for healthcare settings that provide care to the elderly. Research emphasizes the need for malnutrition prevention in extended care facilities such as skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) so that patients receive timely and appropriate intervention(s).

The purpose of this study was to retroactively screen SNF patients using four alternative malnutrition screening tools and to compare results to those from the facility screening tool. A second purpose was to estimate differences in potential Medicare reimbursement based on the number of patients identified at risk for …

The Effects Of Pair Budget Goal Difficulty And Pair Identity On Decision-Making And Performance, Chaoping Li Nov 2018

The Effects Of Pair Budget Goal Difficulty And Pair Identity On Decision-Making And Performance, Chaoping Li

Doctoral Dissertations

Mixed incentive compensation structures have been widely studied in the accounting literature (e.g., Tian et al. 2017; Dekker et al. 2012, Rothenberg 2011; Hwang et al. 2009). However, the findings in the literature as to the effectiveness of mixed incentives are not consistent. The inconsistency in the mixed incentives literature may be due to the various levels of social dilemma embedded in the research setting of the studies. Therefore, I experimentally investigated two factors that may reduce the embedded social dilemma issue and improve the effectiveness of mixed incentive compensation. In this study, student participants were assigned to pairs to …

Assessing The Adequacy Of The Rate Based System Of Enteral Nutrition Infusion In The Icu Of A Community Hospital, Callie Betman Nov 2018

Assessing The Adequacy Of The Rate Based System Of Enteral Nutrition Infusion In The Icu Of A Community Hospital, Callie Betman

Master's Theses

The rate based system for delivering enteral nutrition has been found to result in an average delivery of 60-65% of estimated energy and protein needs in ICU patients. Interruptions in tube feedings for surgery, intolerances, and turning/bathing cause underfeeding as the rate based system does not allow the rate to be adjusted for any lost volume. At Northwest Hospital, protocol is to calculate the hourly tube feeding rate over 20 hours, and run over 24 hours, in order to adjust for an expected 4 hours of interruptions per day; however, the effectiveness of this protocol has not been studied. The …

Understanding Why Students Take Industry-Based Credentialing Examinations: Instrument Development And Pilot Study, Jennifer H. Lawrence Nov 2018

Understanding Why Students Take Industry-Based Credentialing Examinations: Instrument Development And Pilot Study, Jennifer H. Lawrence

Doctoral Dissertations

Educational credentialing is complicated for students with the addition of industry-based credentialing (IBC) in traditional academic and career and technical fields (Bahr, 2015; Lumina Foundation, 2015; Xu & Ran, 2015). Human Capital Theory and Cognitive Engagement Theory framed this study which looked at IBC training from the student point of view (Grisham, 2013; Saldana, 2016; Walters, 2004). The body of literature on credential training is sparse and largely focused on institutional policy rather than student perception and participation (Bahr, 2015; Xu & Ran, 2015). There is evidence that salaries are positively correlated with IBCs and studies show that employers pay …

Current And Potential Uses Of Green Roofs On Hospitals, Arjun Viray Nov 2018

Current And Potential Uses Of Green Roofs On Hospitals, Arjun Viray

University Honors Theses

Plants and planted landscapes have been recognized for their therapeutic benefits. Hospitals are increasingly adopting therapeutic landscapes like healing gardens, horticultural therapy gardens, and memory gardens. Despite this increase in the installation of healing landscapes in hospitals, the research on the therapeutic benefits of green roofs in hospital settings is limited. The primary objective of this project is to understand the current and potential uses of hospital green roofs and associated motivations for their installation. We have documented 105 hospitals nationwide which have green roofs. Of the 105 hospitals, 76 were general care. We found that 63 hospitals have accessible …

What Are We Teaching Abroad? Faculty Goals For Short-Term Study Abroad Courses, Elizabeth Niehaus, Ashley Wegener Nov 2018

What Are We Teaching Abroad? Faculty Goals For Short-Term Study Abroad Courses, Elizabeth Niehaus, Ashley Wegener

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Based on survey data from over 400 faculty members who taught short-term study abroad courses, the purpose of this study was to identify the types of goals that faculty members have in teaching short-term study abroad courses and the relationship between faculty background characteristics (i.e., race, gender, discipline, and prior experience) and their teaching goals. By further understanding the goals that these faculty members have for their study abroad programs, we are better able to assess how these programs may or may not be meeting overall internationalization goals and then to use this information to assist faculty members and higher …

Language Counts: Early Language Mediates The Relationship Between Parent Education And Children's Math Ability, Emily Slusser, Andrew Ribner, Anna Shusterman Nov 2018

Language Counts: Early Language Mediates The Relationship Between Parent Education And Children's Math Ability, Emily Slusser, Andrew Ribner, Anna Shusterman

Faculty Publications

Children's early math skills have been hailed as a powerful predictor of academic success. Disparities in socioeconomic context, however, also have dramatic consequences on children's learning. It is therefore critical to investigate both of these distinct contributors in order to better understand the early foundations of children's academic outcomes. This study tests an integrated model of children's developing math ability so as to (1) identify the specific skills and abilities most clearly linked to early math achievement and (2) measure the influence of children's socioeconomic context on each of these skills. We first evaluated the early vocabulary, number word knowledge …

Setting Sights On Campus Safety: The Possibility Of Firearms On Campus And Campus Violence Prevention, Casey Graham Brown Nov 2018

Setting Sights On Campus Safety: The Possibility Of Firearms On Campus And Campus Violence Prevention, Casey Graham Brown

School Leadership Review

PK-12 school leaders spend a sizeable amount of time discussing, facilitating, and contemplating school safety and security. University administrators do as well, although their discussion and contemplation in some states has been scattered with controversies of allowing weapons on university campuses. School administrators seek to keep weapons out; many university administrators do also, although the legislatures of multiple states have allowed their presence on university campuses.

The Relationship Between Principal Leadership Behaviors And School Climate, Ivan Velasco, Stacey L. Edmonson Nov 2018

The Relationship Between Principal Leadership Behaviors And School Climate, Ivan Velasco, Stacey L. Edmonson

School Leadership Review

The No Child Left Behind Act (2001) revised the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 by making substantial modifications in the major federal programs that support schools‘ efforts to educate all children (U.S. Department of Education, Office of the Deputy Secretary, 2004). Since the inception of this law, demand for greater accountability for student achievement from politicians and legislators has increased exponentially (Carnoy, Elmore, & Siskin, 2003). Strict accountability measures, developed and implemented with limited if any consent or involvement of educators, were imposed on students, teachers, schools, and school districts (Waite, Boone, & NcGgee, 2001). The increased emphasis …

Dreams: Gateway To The Godhead, Tina Berardi Nov 2018

Dreams: Gateway To The Godhead, Tina Berardi

Denison Journal of Religion

In Hinduism, there is the fundamental belief that there is a greater connectivity than a physical one between the universe and the individual. That belief comes down to the discourse within the Upanishads that the Self (the Atman) is the same as the Universe (Brahman). However, there is the noise of the physical world that keeps the body separate from the universe. There are four states of being; waking, dreaming, dreamless sleep, and the transcendent state. In order to reach the transcendent state, or turiya, one must pass through each state of being. Interpreting dreams is the first step, and …

Animal-Assisted Interventions For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Survey Of French Facilities, Claire Philippe-Peyroutet, Marine Grandgeorge

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Our survey of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) offered by French intervention facilities aimed to examine and describe the range of AAI for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children. We invited 2,302 facilities to reply to an online questionnaire. The responses to our survey (n = 386) revealed that animals were used extensively as a complementary intervention. Most AAI sessions were in groups. Various animal species (especially horses and dogs) and facility staff members as well as external collaborators were involved. Numerous benefits (e.g., enhanced well-being, self-esteem, and socialization) were reported. Facilities face difficulties in connection with AAI including finances, staffing, and …

The average number (x¯) of animals hoarded per case was 76 (x˜ = 43). Small mammals were hoarded in …

Roger Ebert Vs. John Doe: An Examination Of The Difference In Media Reviews, Meredith Mullins Nov 2018

Roger Ebert Vs. John Doe: An Examination Of The Difference In Media Reviews, Meredith Mullins

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The purpose of this research is to examine the variation in critic and audience reviews of films and determine the cause of this variation. When reviewing a film, the ratings of critics and audience members often differ, regardless of whether they are positive or negative. This difference may arise from the unique role critics possess in this market as agents and the incentives they face. As agents of the film industry, critics have expert knowledge concerning films that audience members do not possess and therefore, they review films with a different evaluative framework than audience members. Critics may look at …

A Comparison Of Prescriber-Based Opioid Addiction Prevention Strategies: An Integrative Literature Review, Lida Ann Schenkier

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Background: Opioid addiction causes many preventable deaths across the United States. Many recommendations to prevent opioid addiction have been made, however, many recommendations have not been fully evaluated for efficacy. This has led to a gap in knowledge for providers and healthcare systems to make informed decisions on how to reduce opioid addiction.

Objectives: This study explores different prescriber-based opioid prevention strategies, providing an analysis and ranking for the strategies that most effectively reduce opioid abuse and exposure. Additionally, the analysis provides recommendations for future research.

Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted to investigate three opioid abuse prevention strategies: …
