Game Play In Education: An Exploration Of The What, How, And Why, Carrin Lynn Blyth Nov 2018

Game Play In Education: An Exploration Of The What, How, And Why, Carrin Lynn Blyth

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This study explored whether teachers utilize games in the classroom, known as gamification and, if so, whether they used games according to game theory that exists in the field of gaming and game design. In higher education and secondary environments, educators report that problems exist as far as student behavior and engagement. Many students do not want to learn. The literature review conducted as part of this study indicated that when teachers gamified their classrooms few empirical investigations were conducted in the K-12 setting; another shortcoming was a lack of a uniform classification system for game elements among the literature, …

Cinematic Amnesia As Remembering: Coming Home (2014) And Red Amnesia (2014), Ying Bao Nov 2018

Cinematic Amnesia As Remembering: Coming Home (2014) And Red Amnesia (2014), Ying Bao

Department of World Languages Faculty Research

This article examines the trope of amnesia—the crisis of memory—in two recent Chinese-language films dealing with traumatic memories of the Cultural Revolution and its aftermath: Zhang Yimou’s Coming Home (Guilai, 2014) and Wang Xiaoshuai’s Red Amnesia (Chuangru zhe, 2014). Cinematic representation of real and symbolic amnesia, I argue, can be an affective way to overcome historical amnesia, both institutionalized by the Party-state and privatized by individuals. By exploring the dynamics between forgetting and remembering at both collective and individual levels, we can reach a deeper understanding of the profound impact of the Cultural Revolution and its present-day repercussions.

Phox2a and Phox2b are two homeodomain transcription factors playing a pivotal role in the development of noradrenergic neurons during the embryonic period. However, their expression and function in adulthood remain to be elucidated. Using human postmortem brain tissues, rat stress models and cultured cells, this study aimed to examine the alteration of Phox2a and Phox2b expression. The results show that Phox2a and Phox2b are normally expressed in the human locus coeruleus (LC) in adulthood. Furthermore, the levels of Phox2a protein and mRNA and protein levels of Phox2b were significantly elevated in the LC of brain donors that suffered from the …

The Performance Of Memorialization: Politics Of Memory And Memory-Making At The Arthur G. Dozier School For Boys, Kaniqua Robinson Nov 2018

The Performance Of Memorialization: Politics Of Memory And Memory-Making At The Arthur G. Dozier School For Boys, Kaniqua Robinson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My study examines how religion operates as a form of social control in the politics of memory and memory making in the case of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys (1900-2011), a state reform school in Marianna, Florida. Collective memory making is a dynamic process that reflects the social, economic, and political tensions of the present. It is a process most evident during circumstances of reconciliation following conflict, violence, or cases of turmoil resulting in death and in conflicting memories of the experience. Emergence of a dominant narrative about the tragedy or traumatizing event and subjugation of conflicting stories …

Problem-Based Learning In Professional Studies From The Physiotherapy Students’ Perspective, Hilkka Korpi, Liisa Peltokallio, Arja Piirainen

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The aim of the study was to investigate how physiotherapy students using a problem-based learning approach develop into experts during higher education, and answers the question: How do physiotherapy students at bachelor’s level understand the problem-based learning approach while learning to become professionals? PBL is examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of longitudinal data written by 15 voluntary students from two different higher education institutions and collected during 3.5 years. The main results on the new way of learning strengthen earlier conceptions of the importance of reflection in the learning process. The PBL method activates a reflection process by allowing …

Perceptions Of Shop Operators On Packaging Of Made-In-Ghana Products, Agnes Decardi-Nelson Dr, Adam Rahman

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The importance of packaging in the marketing of a product cannot be overemphasized. It raises the appeal of the product and becomes its silent salesman. Proper packaging is a less expensive means of advertisement and leads to a direct reduction in production cost and indirectly increases sales by attracting the final consumer. The use of packaging as a marketing and sales promotional tool has been very well developed in the advanced countries with developing countries such as Ghana lagging far behind. In Ghana, many products are poorly labelled and packaged. This paper seeks to ascertain the views of sellers/traders about …

Effectively combining multiple and complementary sources of information is becoming one of the most promising paths for increased accuracy and more detailed analysis in numerous applications. Neuroscience, business analytics, military intelligence, and sociology are among the areas that could significantly benefit from properly processing diverse data sources. However, traditional methods for combining multiple sources of information are based on slow or impractical methods that rely either on vast amounts of manual processing or on suboptimal representations of data. Moreover, most of the existing methods are not well suited for dealing with the increasing amount of human-generated data. We introduce an …

Using The Immediate Blood Pressure Benefits Of Exercise To Improve Exercise Adherence: A Pilot Study, Amanda Zaleski

Doctoral Dissertations

A single exercise session evokes blood pressure (BP) reductions that are immediate and persist for ≥24hr, termed postexercise hypotension (PEH). Self-monitoring of PEH may foster positive outcome expectations of exercise, and thus, enhance exercise adherence among adults with hypertension. PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of self-monitoring of exercise (EXERCISE) versus exercise plus PEH (EXERCISE+PEH) to improve exercise adherence and BP control among adults with hypertension. METHODS: Adults with high BP were randomized to EXERCISE (n=12) or EXERCISE+PEH (n=12). Subjects underwent supervised, moderate intensity aerobic exercise training for 40-50min/session, 3d/wk for 12wk and were encouraged to exercise unsupervised at home ≥30min/d, …

Haunted Hotel: Poop Version, Sierra Mackelprang Nov 2018

Haunted Hotel: Poop Version, Sierra Mackelprang

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

There once was a man driving on the highway home from a business trip. It was getting late and the man was getting really, really tired.

So he decided he would pull of and stay at the next hotel he came across. He drove down a dark dirt road and came open a very old hotel with no light on except for the bottom floor. He parked the car and walked up to the reception desk and rang the bell.

An old woman came from the back room and asked him,

“What do you want?” [insert raspy scary voice]

“I’m …

Overcoming Exposure To Complex Stressors: An Examination Of Protective Coping Mechanisms For Low-Income Urban African American Youth, Molly Cory Nov 2018

Overcoming Exposure To Complex Stressors: An Examination Of Protective Coping Mechanisms For Low-Income Urban African American Youth, Molly Cory

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Low-income urban African American youth experience multiple uncontrollable stressors (e.g. community violence) that may then impact the severity of controllable stressors (e.g. school stressors) and combine to produce negative life outcomes. In light of these negative outcomes, it is important to understand individual protective factors, and the coping response in particular. Past research has emphasized the advantages of primary control engagement coping, but recent evidence suggests that low-income urban African American youth facing complex and uncontrollable stressors may benefit more from disengagement strategies in response to uncontrollable stressors. Although it is expected this population would additionally benefit from applying engagement …

For this study 408 college-aged students (272 males & 136 females) participated in this study. College-aged students were surveyed regarding their interactions during their physical activity class. The survey contained Likert scale questions and open-ended questions, requiring the students to respond with written answers. Briefly, …

Analysis Of Environment-Marker Associations In American Chestnut, Markus Müller, C. Dana Nelson, Oliver Gailing Nov 2018

Analysis Of Environment-Marker Associations In American Chestnut, Markus Müller, C. Dana Nelson, Oliver Gailing

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

American chestnut (Castanea dentata Borkh.) was a dominant tree species in its native range in eastern North America until the accidentally introduced fungus Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr, that causes chestnut blight, led to a collapse of the species. Different approaches (e.g., genetic engineering or conventional breeding) are being used to fight against chestnut blight and to reintroduce the species with resistant planting stock. Because of large climatic differences within the distribution area of American chestnut, successful reintroduction of the species requires knowledge and consideration of local adaptation to the prevailing environmental conditions. Previous studies revealed clear patterns of genetic diversity …

An Exploration Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Self-Sufficiency Matrix Among Individuals And Families Currently Or At Risk Of Experiencing Homelessness, Camilla Cummings Nov 2018

An Exploration Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Self-Sufficiency Matrix Among Individuals And Families Currently Or At Risk Of Experiencing Homelessness, Camilla Cummings

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The homeless service sector has moved toward the implementation of assessment tools to better understand the support service needs of individuals and families. While a variety of assessment tools are available, their psychometric evidence base is limited. The Self-Sufficiency Matrix (SSM) is one assessment that holds promise with regard to its reliability, validity, and potential use as an instrument for triaging services. However, research examining the factor structure of the SSM has been inconsistent across samples. Moreover, it has never been tested among a broad population of both those currently experiencing and at-risk of experiencing homelessness, or examined unaccompanied adults …

Use Of Non-Technical Skills Training & Video Simulation To Improve Knowledge Among Nurse Anesthesia Trainees, Kathryn Walus Nov 2018

Use Of Non-Technical Skills Training & Video Simulation To Improve Knowledge Among Nurse Anesthesia Trainees, Kathryn Walus

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Background: The transition from didactic component to clinical practice is challenging for nurse anesthesia trainees. When faced with an airway crisis, successful management involves non-technical skills, which include recognition, decision-making, and prioritization. Limited data is available on the efficacy of instructional video on enhancing non-technical skills during airway crisis management among nurse anesthesia trainees.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of instructional video simulation on enhancing the nurse anesthesia trainee’s knowledge of recognition, decisionmaking, and prioritization during bronchospasm and laryngospasm airway crises. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design was used to investigate the effect …

A Comprehensive Reentry Policy For Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists With Substance Use Disorder, Thomas M. Nigro Nov 2018

A Comprehensive Reentry Policy For Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists With Substance Use Disorder, Thomas M. Nigro

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a common problem in anesthesia. While there are policies in place for practicing anesthetists, there are no known studies to date discussing reentry policies specific to the student registered nurse anesthesia (SRNA) population. The purpose of this research study was to describe key stakeholders’ knowledge and perspectives surrounding policies for reentry into academic programs for SRNAs in Illinois with SUD.

The theoretical framework used to drive this research was based off George L. Engel’s Biopsychosocial Theory. The theory examines the biological component of a person’s disease process, the psychological component, and the social component.

During …

Children’S Selective Trust Based On Previous Lying Behaviors, Natalie A. Mordini Nov 2018

Children’S Selective Trust Based On Previous Lying Behaviors, Natalie A. Mordini

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This study examined children’s nuanced understanding of prosocial liars and self-serving liars across the following three areas: children’s willingness to learn information from liars, their judgments of liars through their friend preferences, and their visual attention to liars. As children develop theory of mind skills, they learn they can manipulate other’s knowledge states by telling lies. They also evaluate lying based on whether the liar has self-serving or prosocial intentions, with the former judged more negatively and the latter judged more positively. Based on research findings indicating that children demonstrate selective trust in informants based on their previous accuracy or …

Latent Classes Of Exposure To Potentially Traumatic And Stressful Life Events In A Sample Of Young Predominantly Ethnic Minority Women, Alyssa Donovan Nov 2018

Latent Classes Of Exposure To Potentially Traumatic And Stressful Life Events In A Sample Of Young Predominantly Ethnic Minority Women, Alyssa Donovan

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Women are disproportionately affected by specific types of potentially traumatic and stressful life events that are strongly linked to PTSD and depressive symptoms (Tolin & Foa, 2006; U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). Yet, while many studies have investigated patterns of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and their associations with clinical outcomes, few have assessed PTE typologies with exclusively female samples (e.g., Cavanaugh et al., 2013). This study examined profiles of childhood and adulthood potentially traumatic and stressful life events in a predominantly ethnic minority, community sample of 191 young women. Using latent class analysis, we found four distinct profiles of exposure to …

Chronic Life Stress And Change In Stress Response Functioning In Urban Youth: The Role Of Social Support And Gender, Heather M. Marshall Nov 2018

Chronic Life Stress And Change In Stress Response Functioning In Urban Youth: The Role Of Social Support And Gender, Heather M. Marshall

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) has been established as a bio-marker of stress reactivity in acute stressor tasks. Much less research exists exploring whether sAA is bio-marker for chronic stress exposure, and therefore, allostatic load. Extant research is inconsistent with some evidence to support chronic stress exposure having an impact on sAA reactivity and diurnal levels of sAA, while other studies have failed to support this theory. Social support is regarded as a protective factor against stress, mental health, and physical health consequences. It has been suggested that gender may play a role in the utilization and benefits of social support networks. …
