Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman Nov 2018

Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman

Duke Law Journal

Three widely discussed explanations of the punitive carceral state are racism, harsh drug laws, and prosecutorial overreach. These three narratives, however, only partially explain how our correctional system expanded to its current overcrowded state. Neglected in our discussion of mass incarceration is our largely forgotten history of the long-term, wholesale institutionalization of the disabled. This form of mass detention, motivated by a continuing application of eugenics and persistent class-based discrimination, is an important part of our history of imprisonment, one that has shaped key contours of our current supersized correctional system. Only by fully exploring this forgotten narrative of long-term …

The purpose of this research is to explore unwed mothers’ perceptions about their own resilience in wider contexts and the facilitative factors that may be contributing to this. This study used an exploratory sequential design in which qualitative interview data were first collected to explore these …

A Theory Of Timing Effects In A Self-Organizing Model Of Sentence Processing, Garrett Smith Nov 2018

A Theory Of Timing Effects In A Self-Organizing Model Of Sentence Processing, Garrett Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

Many leading theories of human sentence processing assume that language compre- hension and production take place under the strict control of a symbolic grammar. For example, in sentence comprehension, reading or hearing a word triggers the application of a grammar rule that incorporates the word into the existing sentence structure so that the resulting structure is consistent with the all of the rules of the grammar. These theories have had wide success in explaining important timing effects, e.g., predicting speed-ups or slowdowns while reading a sentence. A number of phenomena have been identified, though, that challenge these grammar-controlled theories and …

Assessing Elizabeth Anscombe’S Theory Of Causality, Bill Bolin Nov 2018

Assessing Elizabeth Anscombe’S Theory Of Causality, Bill Bolin

Faculty Publications

The concept of causality has been investigated for millennia. Different approaches in assessing causality, such as determining purpose or determining sensible proof, make it difficult to compare the major theories and to rank them as best or most credible. This paper addresses the theories of Aristotle, Hume, and Mill before offering Anscombe’s theory of causation as the most effective one for those who believe a theory of causation should show some purpose. Anscombe’s theory tracks well with Aristotle’s teleological structure of causes, and her views on intention play a role in emphasizing motivation and purpose.

Efficient Exploration Of Many Variables And Interactions Using Regularized Regression, Tyson S. Barrett, Ginger Lockhart Nov 2018

Efficient Exploration Of Many Variables And Interactions Using Regularized Regression, Tyson S. Barrett, Ginger Lockhart

Psychology Faculty Publications

The prevention sciences often face several situations that can compromise the statistical power and validity of a study. Among these, research can (1) have data with many variables, sometimes with low sample sizes, (2) have highly correlated predictors, (3) have unclear theory or empirical evidence related to the research questions, and/or (4) have difficulty selecting the proper covariates in observational studies. Modeling in these situations is difficult—and at times impossible—with conventional methods. Fortunately, regularized regression—a machine learning technique—can aid in exploring datasets that are otherwise difficult to analyze, allowing researchers to draw insights from these data. Although many of these …

The Ad Hoc Federal Crime Of Terrorism: Why Congress Needs To Amend The Statute To Adequately Address Domestic Extremism, Nathan Carpenter

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that Congress should add such crimes to the list specified in the federal crime of terrorism statute and amend the statute’s intent requirement. This will allow the Department of Justice to more adequately use its resources to address the growing prevalence of hate groups, increase investigatory capabilities, and emphasize the threat posed by such groups. Part I explores the current federal crime of terrorism and analyzes how various terrorism-related cases are adjudicated. Part II introduces the prevailing threat of political extremists operating within the United States and shows that they should no longer be placed in …

Tactful Inattention: Erving Goffman, Privacy In The Digital Age, And The Virtue Of Averting One's Eyes, Elizabeth De Armond Nov 2018

Tactful Inattention: Erving Goffman, Privacy In The Digital Age, And The Virtue Of Averting One's Eyes, Elizabeth De Armond

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article suggests that we would benefit if we would protect privacy by sometimes requiring tactful inattention by potential users rather than total secrecy by the target. That is, some legal privacy protections should stop emphasizing secrecy and instead emphasize the appropriate uses of personally identifiable and often sensitive information by gelling tactful inattention into legal standards. Culturally, such an expansion may be difficult, as we tend to a “finders-keepers” attitude towards data. However, given technology’s ability to dissolve routine barriers, if we require others to leave some information out of some equations, we may be able to retain …

Colonized And Racist Indigenous Campus Tour, Robin Starr Minthorn, Christine A. Nelson

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof. Nov 2018

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The development of web search engines has provided an alternative for undergraduates to access the needed information for their research activities without utilising library resources, especially reference sources. This avenue created by web search engines is viewed by some as detrimental, as undergraduates now display apathy towards the use of reference sources, even though web search engines have their own limitations. Based on this, the main objective of this study was therefore to examine undergraduates’ preference between web search engines and reference sources for research activities. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the study population consisted of …

Ecological Systems, Complexity, And Student Achievement: Towards An Alternative Model Of Accountability In Education, Eileen S. Johnson Nov 2018

Ecological Systems, Complexity, And Student Achievement: Towards An Alternative Model Of Accountability In Education, Eileen S. Johnson

School Leadership Review

Within the field of education, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of context in understanding various aspects of education (Phillips & Burbules, 2000), and systems approaches to understanding change have become increasingly common. Yet, the simple linear algorithm implicit in current policy such as the Adequate Yearly Progress provision of No Child Left Behind (U.S. Department of Education, 2002) fails to take into account the complex and dynamic nature of education and represents an inappropriate oversimplification of educational outcomes and their measurement. This article postulates that the ecological systems model of Urie Bronfenbrenner represents a useful theoretical …
