Triggers, Protectors, And Predictors In Episodic Migraine., Michael J. Marmura
Triggers, Protectors, And Predictors In Episodic Migraine., Michael J. Marmura
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A wide variety of triggers prompt attacks in episodic migraine. Although experimental triggers such as glyceryl trinitrate reliably produce migraine, natural triggers are much less predictable and vary in importance between individuals. This review describes the most common triggers in episodic migraine and provides strategies for managing them in clinical practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple migraine attack triggers have been established based on patient surveys, diary studies, and clinical trials. Stress, menstrual cycle changes, weather changes, sleep disturbances, alcohol, and other foods are among the most common factors mentioned. Clinical studies have verified that fasting, premenstrual periods in …
An Exploratory Case Study On The Impacts Of Functional Fitness On Physical Functioning, Instrumental Activities Of Daily Living And Quality Of Life For Adults With Physical Disabilities, Brooke Beidler
All Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the specific case of participating in a functional fitness program for adults with physical disabilities. Although there is a growing body of literature concerning the importance of physical exercise for individuals with disabilities, little to no research has been completed specifically concerning the utilization of functional fitness. This study defines functional fitness as a physical exercise program, and explores the phenomenon of impacts to functioning for the participants who were involved. Through the means of case study methodology, this study assessed the impacts of functional fitness participation on physical functioning, instrumental activities …
Effects Of Performance Pressure On Response Inhibition Performance, Daniel N. Endres
Effects Of Performance Pressure On Response Inhibition Performance, Daniel N. Endres
All Theses
Previous research suggests that psychological pressure tends to exert detrimental effects on action-oriented cognitive tasks. However, the effect of psychological pressure on inhibitory cognitive processes has been relatively overlooked. Consequently, the goal of this study was to examine the effect of psychological pressure on response inhibition performance. Participants (N = 125) were assigned to either a time pressure condition or control condition, and then completed the Stop Signal Task, which tests response inhibition. Outcome variables of interest were stop accuracy, stop signal reaction time, and post error slowing. The results from the study indicated that time pressure significantly impaired stop …

IN THE CURRENT ERA of the #MeToo movement and prominent sexual assault disclosures, these types of crimes are finally receiving the attention they deserve. Our society is acknowledging what research has been telling us for years about the high incidence of sexual violence in the United States. According to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, more than 36% of women have experienced contact sexual violence in their lifetime and 19% have experienced attempted or completed rape. Men also report high rates of sexual violence; more than 17% have experienced some form of contact sexual violence in …
Money And Happiness For College Students, Robin Leonard
Money And Happiness For College Students, Robin Leonard
Honors Theses
This study was designed to expand the field of positive psychology and to investigate the relationship between money and happiness in college students. “Money” was further defined as financial satisfaction, and “happiness” was further defined as overall satisfaction with life for the purposes of the study. Existing psychological research demonstrates that many factors influence overall satisfaction with life, including face consciousness, perceived material wealth, goal setting, motivation orientation, cultural value, and the wealth of one’s home nation. However, less research has been conducted on the effects of finances on happiness. The research that does exist focuses on a specific range …
Implementation Of Music In A Simulated Unmanned Aircraft System (Uas) Monitoring Task To Alleviate The Vigilance Decrement, Maria Chaparro
Implementation Of Music In A Simulated Unmanned Aircraft System (Uas) Monitoring Task To Alleviate The Vigilance Decrement, Maria Chaparro
Theses and Dissertations
The vigilance decrement is a thoroughly researched phenomenon in psychological literature and has been identified in many monotonous tasks. Although the phenomenon has been recorded for approximately 80 years, no universal repair, or theory to account for its onset, has been identified. Jobs requiring monotonous task performance have been increasing as time has elapsed, in part due to the rise in automation. Furthermore, much of the vigilance literature does not address modern, more complex tasks, such as the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) monitoring task. A potential method that has been proposed to combat the vigilance decrement is the inclusion of …
Exploring Person-Organization Fit And Gender Bias In The Hiring Process Of Engineering Firms: Is Selection Impacted?, Vicky W. Knerly
Exploring Person-Organization Fit And Gender Bias In The Hiring Process Of Engineering Firms: Is Selection Impacted?, Vicky W. Knerly
Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to discover whether intentionally considering person-organization (P-O) fit during the selection process of workforce planning is impacted by gender bias on the part of the hiring manager. Utilizing a comparative case study of hiring managers and employees of small, for-profit engineering firms, the study attempted to discover whether firms that specifically screen applicants for fit with the organization also exhibit gender bias in their selection decisions and whether this differs from firms that do not necessarily hire or rigorously screen for fit with the organization. The theoretical framework for the study follows the Attraction-Selection-Attrition (ASA) framework first …
Understanding Department Of Defense Employee Perceptions Of Performance Appraisals: Making A Connection Between Performance Appraisals And Motivation, Kenneth Dewayne Welch
Understanding Department Of Defense Employee Perceptions Of Performance Appraisals: Making A Connection Between Performance Appraisals And Motivation, Kenneth Dewayne Welch
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine employee perceptions of performance appraisals in the Department of Defense (DoD) and to examine potential connections between the performance appraisal process, employee motivation and ultimately turnover intent. There is a paucity of qualitative, interview-based research focused on DoD employee perceptions of DoD performance appraisal processes and potential impacts on their motivation and turnover intent. The research study findings revealed a potential gap between the DoD performance appraisal process as outlined in DoD regulatory guidance and the lived experiences of the performance appraisal process by DoD employees. The study did not find significant …
Barriers To Mentoring Women Of Color For Corporate Leadership: Implications For Organizations, Donna Marie Smith
Barriers To Mentoring Women Of Color For Corporate Leadership: Implications For Organizations, Donna Marie Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Mentoring as a human capital development initiative is critical to leadership development for organizational sustainment. Previous research has identified that barriers to mentoring relationships for women of color in organizations exist, confirmed by the finding that a factor in barriers to corporate promotion for women is a lack of mentoring. This dissertation explores the implications that barriers to workplace mentoring relationships may have for organizations from the perspective of women of color. Findings suggest that barriers to mentoring relationships experienced and perceived by women of color have evolved in presentation or diminished since those found by previous research. This research …
Are We Safe Yet? Re-Evaluation Of The Performance Diagnostic Checklist-Safety (Pdc-Safety), Nelmar Jacinto Cruz
Are We Safe Yet? Re-Evaluation Of The Performance Diagnostic Checklist-Safety (Pdc-Safety), Nelmar Jacinto Cruz
Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the utility of the Performance Diagnostic Checklist- Safety (PDC-Safety) (Martinez-Onstott, Wilder, & Sigurdsson, 2016) by comparing the effectiveness of a PDC-Safety indicated intervention with a PDC-Safety nonindicated intervention. The interventions targeted participants’ hand washing behavior at a clinic serving children with intellectual disabilities. Failure to wash hands at appropriate times could pose health risks to both behavior technicians and clients, so efforts should be made to increase the likelihood of hand washing. The results of the PDC-Safety suggested that the antecedents and information domain was most problematic. First, a non-indicated intervention, which included access to additional materials …

An Examination Of The Degree Of Self-Knowledge Across Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, And Millennials, Jenna Marie Manelli
An Examination Of The Degree Of Self-Knowledge Across Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, And Millennials, Jenna Marie Manelli
Theses and Dissertations
Generations and their differences, as well as the construct of self-knowledge, have been studied at length due to their potential predictive power over an individual’s behaviors. This research proposes to build upon these constructs by blending them together in order to see the differences that exist on various personality dimensions, as well as on self-knowledge, between the Baby Boomer, Generation X, and Millennial generations. In order to test these hypotheses, archival data were used. Participants in the archival data set were grouped based on their generation depending on the year of their birth. The federal government, specifically the U.S. Census …
On Affect: Function And Phenomenology, Andreas Elpidorou
On Affect: Function And Phenomenology, Andreas Elpidorou
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This paper explores the nature of emotions by considering what appear to be two differing, perhaps even conflicting, approaches to affectivity—an evolutionary functional account, on the one hand, and a phenomenological view, on the other. The paper argues for the centrality of the notion of function in both approaches, articulates key differences between them, and attempts to understand how such differences can be overcome.

What Influences Whether Family Forest Owners Participate In Outreach Campaigns?, Brett J. Butler, Sarah M. Butler, Kelley Dennings, Tricia Gorby Knoot
Journal of Extension
We used an experimental design to analyze factors affecting participation rates for family forest owner outreach campaigns. Through logistic regression, we assessed the participation rates as a function of campaign and landowner attributes. Participation rates ranged from 3% to 14%. Owners offered a publication were on average 4.3 times more likely to participate than those offered a forester visit. Owners with a college degree were on average 1.5 times more likely to participate than those with lower levels of formal education. Extension and other outreach professionals can use knowledge of these factors to design more effective outreach campaigns.

The Investment Risk Tolerance Assessment: A Resource For Extension Educators, Abed Rabbani, Barbara O'Neill, Frances Lawrence, John Grable
Journal of Extension
This article provides a brief review of investment risk tolerance, clarifications of terms used to describe risk attitudes, and a description of an online tool, the Investment Risk Tolerance Assessment (IRTA). The IRTA is a research-based tool that provides a score indicating a personalized analysis of a user's willingness to take financial risk. Extension educators can add value to the lives of their clientele by providing assistance in assessing risk tolerance in a valid and reliable manner. For this reason, the IRTA should be a useful addition to Extension educators' toolboxes.

The Modifier Model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suggests that phenotypic variability within ASD is rooted in modifier processes, such as the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and behavioral activation system (BAS). Among a sample of 53 adolescents with ASD, this study examined associations between (a) self-reported BIS/BAS and frontal and parietal alpha electroencephalogram asymmetry and whether these indices related to (b) ASD severity (via the Autism Quotient), and/or (c) co-occurring anxiety and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (via Youth Self Report and Child Behavior Checklist). Findings showed that alpha asymmetry was associated with self-reported BAS scores, such that greater BAS was related …

Data were obtained from 40 students, in Grades 7 or 8, who were enrolled in a male gender choir at one of the five participating middle schools. Most participants enrolled in choir because they thought choir was fun, and they were good singers. Most participants did not think that choir was “better” when the genders were separated. …
Critical Pedagogy And The Ethics Of Care: How Values Affect The Classroom Dynamic, Colby D. Reed
Critical Pedagogy And The Ethics Of Care: How Values Affect The Classroom Dynamic, Colby D. Reed
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis centers on the benefits of Paulo Freire’s critical and liberatory pedagogy for introductory composition classes when used as an ethical and moral template as opposed to a sociological ideology. Using care ethics as a lens, chapter one begins by addressing current difficulties and criticisms present in the discussion of care ethics and the pedagogy as the models for composition classes and then applying the ethics of critical and liberatory pedagogy to these issues. Chapter two builds on that by exploring what ethical and moral elements are present in Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and how they relate to …
The Impact Of Black Lives Matter Movement Publicity On Juror Decision Making, Emily R. Nerness
The Impact Of Black Lives Matter Movement Publicity On Juror Decision Making, Emily R. Nerness
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Others have investigated separately whether general pretrial publicity (PTP) or racial salience have an impact on juror decision making, but no one has explored a potential connection between the two. With information about the Black lives matter (BLM) movement recurring in the media, the question arises of whether news about the BLM movement can increase racial salience, thereby influencing juror decision making. The present research addressed whether 1) exposing participants to pro-BLM or negative-BLM news articles would influence verdicts and guilt ratings when compared to a control group, 2) whether this PTP effect would be different for Black versus White …
How God Writes History: A Gramscian Analysis Of Religion And Nature In The Writings, Life, And Legacy Of John Muir, Daniel R. Jones
How God Writes History: A Gramscian Analysis Of Religion And Nature In The Writings, Life, And Legacy Of John Muir, Daniel R. Jones
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Representations of John Muir, America’s most famous environmentalist, and religion have been highly variegated. A mythological figure of American environmental politics, Muir and his legacy have been an ideological apparatus for presidents, environmentalists, and naturalists performing acts of identification for themselves and their country. Furthermore, religion and environmental scholars have often used Muir as a case study for what they call “nature religion.” Lost in this myth-making labor are the politics of sacred spaces and national discourse. Italian political theorist Antonio Gramsci developed the concept of common sense and the intellectual, which this thesis uses to analyze John Muir’s poetics …

The main objective of this research is to discover which rhetorical functions were used in the Master´s thesis writing written by eight (8) American and eight (8) Spanish postgraduates in their na-tive language. A computerized tex-tual analysis of the rhetorical func-tion of citation was used to study this phenomenon (Petrić, 2007). The results obtained from the re-search showed that the different cultural conventions in the thesis writing indicate that when com-pared with native Spanish writers, the American writers of English use the highest number of cita-tions, and write a relatively longer Introduction and Conclusion parts. On the other hand, the …

A Data Synthesis Of Melodic Intonation Therapy, Jacqueline Ulfers
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Baby Boomers, one of the largest (modern) generations, made of 76 million people, is entering the prime age to suffer a stroke, which often leads to aphasia. Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT)is a current rehabilitation strategy for aphasia. Determining whether MIT is an effective and efficient treatment is vital because millions are at risk to suffer a stroke and effective rehabilitation strategies must be established. This honors thesis was a systematic review of previous studies written on melodic intonation therapy. The articles reviewed were chosen based on criteria including age of the patient, type of stroke, and immediacy of therapy. …
Cultural Naturalism And The Market God, David Timothy Denenny
Cultural Naturalism And The Market God, David Timothy Denenny
Theses
This work employs John Dewey's cultural naturalism to explore how and why the orthodox economic tradition functions as a religious faith.Scholars such as the theologian Harvey Cox and others now view orthodox economic practice as a religion. Other scholars such as Max Weber, Alasdair MacIntyre, and numerous others view modern economic practice as exemplifying a particular ethic. The focus in this work is placed upon the destructive consequences of practicing the Market faith. This work argues that much of contemporary economic practice maintains a view of science that is incompatible with the kind of naturalism found in Classical American Pragmatism. …
