Morality In An Apocalypse: A Character Analysis Using Kant And Maslow, Madison Smith
Morality In An Apocalypse: A Character Analysis Using Kant And Maslow, Madison Smith
Perpetua: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at UAH
This article addresses how the relationship between morality and humanity evolves upon the disintegration of societal constraints due to the apocalypse in Station Eleven and The Road through the critical analysis of both novels. It examines the characters’ different behaviors spanning their normal personality to their threatened survival state. These mannerisms are scrutinized in respect to Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative, specifically the universal and humanity formulations, as criterion to judge the characters’ moral boundaries in comparison to pre-collapse values. Furthermore, Abraham Maslow’s theory of self-actualization is employed as an additional means to evaluate the ethical principles of the characters under …

Community Navigation As A Field Of Practice: Reframing Service Delivery To Meet The Needs Of Communities’ Marginalized Populations, Joby Schaffer, M. Julie Patiño, P. Barclay Jones, Ladawn Sullivan
The Foundation Review
Community navigators help individuals and families access local services and assistance through a combination of referrals and interpersonal support. The Denver Foundation launched the Basic Human Needs Navigator Learning Community in February 2014 to help navigators working with local organizations and community members practicing navigation independently improve their practice and identify similarities and differences in their approaches.
This article discusses the multiyear, peer-learning project, including the general lessons the foundation learned about both navigation and the use of a learning-community approach to reach its field-building goals.
Reports from participating organizations and community members over four years suggest the efficacy of …

The Decline In U.S. Air Traffic Controllers: A Qualitative Exploration Of Current African American Air Traffic Controller Perspectives On Diversity Recruitment In Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Schools, Wycliffe L. Walcott Jr.
Education Doctoral
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Air Traffic Control Specialists (ATCS) workforce has been in steady decline since 2012. The declining number of federal ATCS threatens a $1.5 trillion aviation economy in the United States. The results of fewer controllers are increased delays and cancelled flights (National Air Traffic Controllers Association [NATCA], 2018). Additionally, the controller workforce is predominantly White male (Carey, 2014). Diversity amongst ATCS is another troubling trend for the FAA (McCartin, 2011). According to Outtz and Hanges (2013), an underrepresentation of minorities, including women, exists among the candidates who were hired successfully in the FAA ATCS centralized hiring …

Why Do They Stay? The Experiences And Perceptions Of Traditional Age Male College Students That Influence Persistence Beyond The First Year In College, Elizabeth A. Lambert
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of traditional age male college students that influence their persistence beyond the first year in college. This qualitative study uses Moustakas’ (1994) approach to transcendental or psychological phenomenology. The researcher collected data at two different small, private, 4-year liberal arts institutions situated in New York State. Semi-structured interviews were utilized as the primary source of data collection to capture the experiences and perceptions of traditional age (19 years old) male undergraduates, midway through their second year of college and enrolled full-time. This study uses Schlossberg’s (1981) transition theory …
Employee Soft Skills And Organizational Culture: An Exploratory Case Study, Eliyahu Lotzar
Employee Soft Skills And Organizational Culture: An Exploratory Case Study, Eliyahu Lotzar
Education Doctoral
Students seek higher education to obtain better employment. While employers value soft skills at least as much as academic knowledge, the soft skills literature is without consensus as to which of the many soft skills or employability skills employers value most, making it challenging for colleges to provide effective soft skills education. To organize employers’ many different soft skill preferences, this study explores organizational culture as a conceptual framework. Specifically, the case study explores values and characteristics common to one organization’s culture, to the soft skills that its executives and managers prefer their employees to possess, to employee beliefs regarding …
A Qualitative Exploration Of The Factors That Led Hispanic/Latina Middle School Students To Select A Stem High School Education In New York City, Maria Lopez
Education Doctoral
There is a significant gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers as well as in the STEM workforce that continues to expand, ultimately impacting the global economy. In response to this crisis, this qualitative study sought to identify the factors that led Hispanic/Latina middle school students to select a STEM high school education. For this study, a purposeful sample of twenty-five ninth-grade Hispanic/Latina students participated from two designated STEM private high schools located in a densely populated Hispanic/Latino area in the Bronx. Participants anonymously responded to The Middle to High School STEM Experience questionnaire (see Appendix A …

Broad Autism Phenotypic Traits And The Relationship To Sexual Orientation And Sexual Behavior, Lydia R. Qualls, Kathrin Hartmann, James F. Paulson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Individuals with higher levels of the broad autism phenotype (BAP) have some symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Like individuals with ASD, people with higher-BAP may have fewer sexual experiences and may experience more same-sex attraction. This study measured BAP traits, sexual experiences, and sexual orientation in typically developing (TD) individuals to see if patterns of sexual behavior and sexual orientation in higher-BAP resemble those in ASD. Although BAP characteristics did not predict sexual experiences, one BAP measure significantly predicted sexual orientation, β = 0.22, t = 2.72, p = .007, controlling for demographic variables (R2 change = …

Paraprofessional Counselors' Perceptions Of Storybooks To Facilitate Children's Communication Following Parental Suicide, Lindsay Jacalyn Regehr
Theses and Dissertations
A parent's death it is one of the most stressful and traumatic events in a child's life (Guldin et al., 2015; Worden, 1996, 2008). In particular, when bereavement is linked to a parent's suicide, children face unique challenges and are more vulnerable to potentially negative outcomes (Brent, Melhem, Donohoe, & Walker, 2009; Haine, Ayers, Sandler, & Wolchik, 2008; Pitman, Osborn, King, & Erlangsen, 2014; Young et al., 2012). Although many factors influence children's recovery following a parent's suicide, the surviving parent's emotional stability and emotional availability to support their children are of critical importance. Additionally, negative outcomes are often linked …
Assessing Rice Consumers’ Preferences And Willingness To Pay In Haiti, Cleeford Pavilus
Assessing Rice Consumers’ Preferences And Willingness To Pay In Haiti, Cleeford Pavilus
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the last 30 years, rice has become the number one food staple in Haiti, and rice imports have outpaced domestic production to supply the country’s increasing rice demand. Policy makers support the claim that increasing local rice supply will not only reduce the dependency on imported rice but also upheave the national economy. However, there is a lack of information on Haitian consumers’ preferences for rice to aid the development of the local rice supply chain. This research aims to bridge that gap by assessing Haitian consumer preferences and willingness to pay for selected rice quality characteristics. The results …

Producing The Self-Regulating Subject: Liberal Protection In Indonesia’S Migration Infrastructure, Andy Scott Chang
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Labour protection has become a dominant agenda in global migration governance, particularly for sending countries whose diasporic citizens are denied political rights in host states. Despite having limited authority to arbitrate extraterritorial disputes, sending countries like Indonesia have deployed novel techniques of statecraft to improve migrant protection. Through the prism of the professional competence exam and pre-departure orientation seminar, this article investigates the Indonesian state's regulatory practices that focus on migrant conduct. Although outbound domestic workers are subject to a prolonged process of skill formation, other Indonesian contract workers pursue emigration upon acquiring basic legal knowledge without undergoing accreditation. While …

Structural Model Of Child Routines And Self-Regulation In Relation To Parenting And Externalizing Behavior Problems In Young Children, Lovina R. Bater
Structural Model Of Child Routines And Self-Regulation In Relation To Parenting And Externalizing Behavior Problems In Young Children, Lovina R. Bater
Dissertations
The relationship between parenting practices and externalizing behavior problems in preschool children is well established; however, the mechanisms that explain this relationship are less understood. It is suggested that the structure and predictability created by child routines allow children the opportunity to become aware of and learn to regulate their behaviors accordingly, yet only a couple of studies have examined this relationship. Therefore, this study examined competing models (i.e., direct, indirect, and serial mediation models) to help determine which model captures the relationship between the variables of interest. It was hypothesized that each model would have good model fit but …

The present study investigated the unique association between five types of childhood abuse and neglect and 18 lower-order dimensions of personality pathology, and using latent classes analysis (LCA) explored patterns of childhood abuse or neglect experiences. Further differences across latent classes on personality pathology traits, personality disorder symptom count and a diagnosis of personality disorder were examined. Participants were 178 adolescents and young adults (12–22 years; M = 16.02, 65.7% girls; 83% Axis I/II disorder) from the Netherlands referred for mental health services. Emotional abuse was uniquely associated with 11 personality pathology traits; sexual and physical were associated with three …
On The Exactitude Of Big Data: La Bêtise And Artificial Intelligence, Noel Fitzpatrick, John D. Kelleher
On The Exactitude Of Big Data: La Bêtise And Artificial Intelligence, Noel Fitzpatrick, John D. Kelleher
Articles
This article revisits the question of ‘la bêtise’ or stupidity in the era of Artificial Intelligence driven by Big Data, it extends on the questions posed by Gille Deleuze and more recently by Bernard Stiegler. However, the framework for revisiting the question of la bêtise will be through the lens of contemporary computer science, in particular the development of data science as a mode of analysis, sometimes, misinterpreted as a mode of intelligence. In particular, this article will argue that with the advent of forms of hype (sometimes referred to as the hype cycle) in relation to big data and …

Summer Camp As A Force For 21st Century Learning: Exploring Divergent Thinking And Activity Selection In A Residential Camp Setting, Myles Lynch, C. Boyd Hegarty, Nate Trauntvein, Jonathan Plucker
Journal of Youth Development
This study investigated change in divergent thinking (DT), an indicator of creative potential, at 2 gender- specific residential summer camps. Additionally, this study examined whether the change in DT varied by gender and by the type of activities campers self-select. Quantitative methods, using a quasi- experimental design was used in order to understand differences in camper scores. A total of 189 youth, 100 girls, 89 boys, between the ages of 9 and 14 years participated in the current study. Participants were administered a modified version of Guilford's (1967) alternate uses task, a measure of DT, in which respondents were asked …

When handled effectively, conflict provides opportunities to strengthen relationships and assist youth in developing peaceful conflict resolution skills. Sport participation is one context in which youth develop skills and encounter conflict. The purpose of this study was to develop an applied model that addresses conflict resolution in sport-based youth development programs. Using qualitative interviewing, a community-engaged approach guided the selection of participants and data analysis. We used the models of restorative practice and Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) through sports to guide our study. Following interviews with a variety of community partners, we found that the values of sport …

Assessing Multicultural Parenting Values And Practices In Prevention Programs For Latino Youth, Ghaffar Ali Hurtado, Julie Fife, Maria Svetaz, Michele Allen
Journal of Youth Development
As communities become increasingly diverse, it is important to consider how cultural navigation interacts with adolescent development. We examined immigrant parenting values and practices to promote healthy development when developing Padres Informados/Jóvenes Preparados (Padres). Three focus groups were conducted with Latino immigrant parents (n = 27). Parents strove to foster a strong Latino identity to protect their children from detrimental preconceived notions about Latinos in the broader American culture. They conveyed a Latino identity by speaking Spanish and teaching the values of respect and familism. Parents expressed tremendous stress in parenting while navigating difficult policies, socioeconomic conditions, and unfamiliar systems. …

Heart And Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, Jill Baker-Tingey, Pamela Powell, Crystal Powell
Journal of Youth Development
Children exposed to domestic violence (DV) inadvertently learn behaviors that make them more likely to become victims and/or perpetrators later in life unless they learn skills to address childhood trauma. This article discusses how two rural community needs assessments identified that DV prevention was a high-priority issue, the effects of DV on youth mental and physical health, and the resulting Heart and Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, a Cooperative Extension program designed to strengthen family relationships and break the cycle of violence. Implications for practice include helping youth build healthy relationships, incorporating DV awareness training in staff/volunteer professional development, collaborating …
