Striking A Balance: An Exploration Of Staff-Camper Relationship Formation, Rachel Rubin, Matthew Hagler, Samantha Burton, Jean Rhodes
Striking A Balance: An Exploration Of Staff-Camper Relationship Formation, Rachel Rubin, Matthew Hagler, Samantha Burton, Jean Rhodes
Journal of Youth Development
Previous research highlights a range of positive developmental outcomes associated with attending summer camp. Close staff-camper relationships likely contribute to positive development, but little is known about how these bonds are formed. The current study utilized constructivist thematic analysis of interviews with campers (n = 8) and staff members (n = 7) at an overnight summer camp to examine the factors and processes that promote or inhibit close staff-camper relationship formation. The main themes identified were striking a balance, level of experience, and relationship-promoting behaviors. Staff members experience apparent paradoxes in their roles (e.g., relating to campers while also exerting …

Testfordep: An R Package For Modern Distribution-Free Tests And Visualization Tools For Independence, Jeffrey C. Miecznikowski, En-Shuo Hsu, Yanhua Chen, Albert Vexler
The R Journal
This article introduces testforDEP, a portmanteau R package implementing for the first time several modern tests and visualization tools for independence between two variables. While classical tests for independence are in the base R packages, there have been several recently developed tests for independence that are not available in R. This new package combines the classical tests including Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient method, Kendall’s τ rank correlation coefficient method and Spearman’s ρ rank correlation coefficient method with modern tests consisting of an empirical likelihood based test, a density-based empirical likelihood ratio test, Kallenberg data-driven test, maximal information coefficient …

Snowboot: Bootstrap Methods For Network Inference, Yuzhou Chen, Yulia R. Gel, Vyacheslav Lyubchich, Kusha Nezafati
The R Journal
Complex networks are used to describe a broad range of disparate social systems and natural phenomena, from power grids to customer segmentation to human brain connectome. Challenges of parametric model specification and validation inspire a search for more data-driven and flexible nonparametric approaches for inference of complex networks. In this paper we discuss methodology and R implementation of two bootstrap procedures on random networks, that is, patchwork bootstrap of Thompson et al. (2016) and Gel et al. (2017) and vertex bootstrap of Snijders and Borgatti (1999). To our knowledge, the new R package snowboot is the first implementation of the …

Shinyitemanalysis For Teaching Psychometrics And To Enforce Routine Analysis Of Educational Tests, Patrícia Martinková, Adéla Drabinová
The R Journal
This work introduces ShinyItemAnalysis, an R package and an online shiny application for psychometric analysis of educational tests and items. ShinyItemAnalysis covers a broad range of psychometric methods and offers data examples, model equations, parameter estimates, interpretation of results, together with a selected R code, and is therefore suitable for teaching psychometric concepts with R. Furthermore, the application aspires to be an easy-to-use tool for analysis of educational tests by allowing the users to upload and analyze their own data and to automatically generate analysis reports in PDF or HTML. We argue that psychometric analysis should be a routine …
Networktoolbox: Methods And Measures For Brain, Cognitive, And Psychometric Network Analysis In R, Alexander P. Christensen
Networktoolbox: Methods And Measures For Brain, Cognitive, And Psychometric Network Analysis In R, Alexander P. Christensen
The R Journal
This article introduces the NetworkToolbox package for R. Network analysis offers an intuitive perspective on complex phenomena via models depicted by nodes (variables) and edges (correlations). The ability of networks to model complexity has made them the standard approach for modeling the intricate interactions in the brain. Similarly, networks have become an increasingly attractive model for studying the complexity of psychological and psychopathological phenomena. NetworkToolbox aims to provide researchers with state-of-the-art methods and measures for estimating and analyzing brain, cognitive, and psychometric networks. In this article, I introduce NetworkToolbox and provide a tutorial for applying some the package’s functions to …
The Politeness Package: Detecting Politeness In Natural Language, Michael Yeomans, Alejandro Kantor, Dustin Tingley
The Politeness Package: Detecting Politeness In Natural Language, Michael Yeomans, Alejandro Kantor, Dustin Tingley
The R Journal
This package provides tools to extract politeness markers in English natural language. It also allows researchers to easily visualize and quantify politeness between groups of documents. This package combines and extends prior research on the linguistic markers of politeness (Brown and Levinson, 1987; Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil et al., 2013; Voigt et al., 2017). We demonstrate two applications for detecting politeness in natural language during consequential social interactions— distributive negotiations, and speed dating.

A systematic search was conducted across eight databases using the keywords: “measure*, scale*, father* or paternal*, and involve*. A final sample of 17 studies were identified for a systematic review. A total of eleven (five child-reported and six father-reported) father involvement scales were used in the studies. Guided by a heuristic contextual model of father involvement, secondary data from Waves 5 and 9 of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study were analyzed to assess the effects of father involvement (mother and father report of father involvement) at five years of age on children’s internalizing, externalizing, and delinquency behaviors and …
Behavioral And Local Field Potential Changes In The Thalamus And Anterior Cingulate Cortex Of Behaving Rats Experiencing Post Herpetic Neuralgia, Jennifer Strand
Behavioral And Local Field Potential Changes In The Thalamus And Anterior Cingulate Cortex Of Behaving Rats Experiencing Post Herpetic Neuralgia, Jennifer Strand
Psychology Theses - Archive
Post herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is experienced as burning pain in the facial region, caused by nerve damage from the herpes zoster virus. The pain often becomes chronic and debilitating. Investigations into the pain pathway become vital. Pain itself is multidimensional, consisting of both the sensory and affective experiences. One of the primary brain substrates for transmitting sensory signals in the facial muscles is through ventral posterior medial thalamus (VPM). Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been shown to be vital in the affective experience of pain, so investigating both of these areas in freely behaving animals can provide important information. Local …

Caffeine is one of the most popular substances when it comes to athletic performance enhancement and has been used for many years. The effects of caffeine on the human body has been studied thoroughly and shows that it does has …
Evaluating The Impact Of Age And Time On Sensory And Affective Levels Of Pain Processing, Maxine Kaylen Geltmeier
Evaluating The Impact Of Age And Time On Sensory And Affective Levels Of Pain Processing, Maxine Kaylen Geltmeier
Psychology Theses - Archive
The relationship between pain and age has been studied for decades. However, research has produced conflicting results for pain thresholds and pain affect in clinical assessments. Likewise, pre-clinical research is conflicting and sparse, limiting the extent of any overarching conclusions. Despite conflicting results on directionality (higher thresholds verses lower thresholds), pain sensitivity and pain affect seem to change with age. Two major arguments have surfaced to explain these differences. The first is, the aging process can lead to changes in peripheral pain signals of pain pathways. The second is, higher order processes that evaluate pain information change with age. For …
Motivators Of Prostitution Desistance, Shawn Nicole Guy
Motivators Of Prostitution Desistance, Shawn Nicole Guy
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
The intent of this thesis was to determine the factors that lead to desistance from street prostitution in the form of motivators and how to shape recommendations to courts, social services, and policy-makers based off of identified themes. Additionally, various theories are discussed, supporting the presence of identified motivators and themes, that could be used by interventionsists as guiding principles when working on strategies for prostitution desistance modifications. Without isolating and stratifying motivators and themes, prostitutes who desire to desist may not receive appropiate treatments and interventions and may continue to recidivate with prostitution-related criminal charges. Statements obtained through qualitative …

The Error Theory Of Contract, Matthew A. Seligman
The Error Theory Of Contract, Matthew A. Seligman
Maryland Law Review
Many people have false beliefs about contract doctrine. That pervasive phenomenon has profound practical, theoretical, and normative implications that neither courts nor scholars have recognized. This Article will make three contributions to fill that gap. First, it will establish just how widespread the phenomenon is among non-lawyers. After synthesizing the existing evidence of false beliefs about contract law, it will contribute a new empirical study showing that between one-third and one-half of people falsely believe specific performance rather than damages is the remedy for breach.
The Article will then argue that people’s false beliefs about contract doctrine pose a fundamental …
Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez
Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez
Philosophy
Reactive theories of responsibility see moral accountability as grounded on the capacity for feeling reactive-attitudes. I respond to a recent argument gaining ground in this tradition that excludes psychopaths from accountability. The argument relies on what Paul Russell has called the 'subjectivity requirement'. On this view, the capacity to feel and direct reactive-attitudes at oneself is a necessary condition for responsibility. I argue that even if moral attitudes like guilt are impossible for psychopaths to deploy, that psychopaths, especially the "successful" and "secondary" subtypes of psychopathy, can satisfy the subjectivity requirement with regard to shame. I appeal to evidence that …

An Ethnographic Study On The Relationship Between Andragogy And Perceived Ability Of Hybrid And Virtual Employees To Live Corporate Values, Laura Van Iseghem
Dissertations
As several businesses and organizations push to be profitable and successful, many lack efforts in enforcing and maintaining an effective vision and mission as part of the business strategy. This qualitative, ethnographic study aimed to identify the relationship, if any, between andragogy, an adult learning theory, and the perceived ability of the study company’s hybrid and virtual employees to live the seven corporate core values (trust, humility, embracing change, passion, positive attitude, teamwork and honesty and integrity) based on Knowles’ (1973, 1995) six assumptions of the characteristics of the adult learner and the eight process elements (theoretical framework) by which …

Addressing Cultural Diversity In Early Childhood Classes: What Are Teachers Competencies?, Prezy Emanuel Ramadhani
Master of Education
Addressing cultural diversity (CD) has become an issue of discussion worldwide particularly in early childhood care and education institutions, on how practitioners address the learning needs of children from a diverse cultural background (DCB) in their classrooms. In Tanzania particularly in Korogwe town, like another different part of the world, early childhood classes are populated with children from the DCB. Yet, little is on documents on how practitioners address the LNC from the DCB. The purpose of this study was to investigate the competences of early childhood practitioners (ECPs) in addressing the LNC from the DCB. The study adopted a …
